I met Windham and Rotundo right around this time, in Tampa. Barry, like he said, was supposed to wear an eyepatch, but he wasn't. Then i see him on TV with the eyepatch on! He broke kayfabe and a young man's heart.
I loved Windham and Rotunda and I remember them switching Barry Windham with Dan Spivey and it wasn't the same and I was a kid probably 10? This would explain the ridiculous gimmick when he returned but he was great in WCW and was used perfectly!! Rotunda at times was great in WCW but luckily he got a great gimmick from WWE.
Varsity Club Rotunda was his peak for sure. He really was a great heel and a great TV Champ when the title still meant something. A good Top 5 guy during 1988-1989 when he also won the tag-titles with Dr. Death.
Yeah, he definitely made his mark as IRS...but I feel Mike Rotunda as himself, particularly during the Varsity Club years, were great...I feel he's really underrated...plus he was a legit shooter
A bit of wrestler brain here. He and Rotunda had been off the entire month of September, then were on the road for just under 2 weeks before that Boston show.
@@mr.timebombman2230 OMG thankyou - I have always know him as Mike Rotundo ... but can't find anything but Rotunda on the internet. Thought I was having my own Mandela Effect moment!

@@paulaburden9596 I'm a big Barry fan as well, I just found it funny that he kept calling Mike Rotunda, Mike Rotundo, considering Rotundo named his kid after Barry!
I vividly remember this period. Mid 85 - early 86 I was becoming a dedicated wrestling fan picking my favorites and Windham was an instant favorite. I was a huge Rock n Roll Express fan and the US Express kinda represented a wwe version of them only with bigger guys. Out of the two Windham shined just a little more than Rotunda. So when BW disappeared abruptly (from a kid's perspective) and Spivey came in, I didn't like it at all. I recognized Spivey though as Starship Eagle from NWA Jim Crockett Promotions. Next thing I know BW is showing up on TBS JCP. So it looked like a trade or something at the time 😄😄😄. Hearing this story fills in the gaps and makes a lot of sense.
Loved them both during the Gordon solie days in Florida. My favorite was rotundo as IRS. He'd yell at the crowd you didn't pay your taxes, and they would shout back I DID PAY MY TAXES. Lol
Cornette said in Mid South and Crockett they were working 6 or 7 nights a week and doing double shots on Sundays and driving everywhere. i honestly dont know why more guy didnt snap
@ericdravenX00X Good thing you're not a commercial fisherman... Try 8 months, 7 days a week, 15 hour days... These dudes be living out their dreams, while some of us, had to do what we had to do, to make the best for ourselves..!! (And those we loved)
Kids back then actually thought Dan Spivey was Barry Windham. It was adults telling kids that Windham changed his name to Danny Spivey to wrestle in the WWF. Funny how Windham mentions cloning him with Spivey at the end of the video. I knew they were not the same wrestler and I was a kid back then. NWA/WCW were Flair and the four Horsemen. Dedicated fans but 2nd fiddle to WWF back then. I think Vince knew the WCW/NWA wrestlers were just as good and sometimes even better than WWF wrestlers.
Greed, you can't travel and work that many days straight like that. It was the days when the boss didn't care as long as the money kept rolling in. Next comes drugs, then comes death. Some survived awhile. Vicious very painful cycle where money isn't the only or most important thing that matters. If McMahon is crazy enough to work guys that many days straight he certainly is crazy enough to do or try to do anything.
i remember being sad when he left wwf. spivey and rotundo weren't any good. i was in 6th grade and I had a tshirt made with barry windhams name on it because they didn't have shirts. sure I looked like a dork when I wore it but it wasn't that bad because brian and craig had fake hulkamania shirts that we all made fun of.
I've never understood why Vince didn't give each wrestler 2 or 3 days off a week so they could go home. If I was their boss they'd definitely get that time off. I wouldn't want my wrestlers upset and hating their job. I wouldnt care about the money as much. I imagine money was still pouring in.
Don’t know if everyone has experienced burnout but if you have then you can empathize. Had a job decades ago when it felt like I was there 99% of the time.
When I don't want to see another human being that's when I know I'm burnt out. I Can't even imagine what these guys went through. But at the same time once you get going it's almost hard to stop and you're just on autopilot the entire time.
Barry should've been a single champ in the WWF I.C Champ & Heavyweight Champ and why he could go move for move with cruiserweights then go against the big guys , same for NWA , WCW he should've always had a belt or wrestling for one and he had the most talent , to be one of the all time greats where we go he was better then Flair , he was he was better then Hogan he was it the only difference is Flair , Hogan put wrestling first in their life over family and all things personal.
That's such a shame cause The US Express was my favorite tag team as a kid. These guys were so damn over like the tag version of Hogan with the patriotism, etc...Then they had the team return but Dany Spivey with the blonde hair as Rutonda's partner. But even as a kid I knew Spivey was a huge downgrade.
To be fair, Mike got a pretty decent push when he came back as IRS. When Barry came back as “The Widowmaker”, he was undefeated for his entire stint which means Vince probably had big plans for him before leaving again.
I really don't think people give Windham enough credit for his in-ring work. Any younger fans should look his 80s matches, for his size he was like a cat.
Would have made a good champion after the WWF steroid scandal, athletic natural athlete who could work, but Bret Hart fom got the spot and the rest is history.
Great performer.....When he came back to the WWF as the Widowmaker, Vince for some reason sabotaged it.....Hogan/Windham would have been awesome. But Vince screwed it.
Vince worked them like dogs. No health care, no pension, no revenue sharing. The McMahon family ends up as billionaires. Why don’t these guys see the benefits of the NFL or Major League Baseball. The wrestlers need a union.

Spivey is no clone of Windham
Mike is a brave man to be walking around downtown Baltimore at night in the mid-1980's...

Rotunda got over big time as IRS.
Seems everyone backstage referred to Brute-I as "Dizzy Hogan".
What about when Billy Jack Haynes having a heart attack on a plane and Vince was mad because he couldn't work?
Now did that actually happen, or did Haynes say it happened, because those are two different things.

This interview is from 2002. So over 20 years ago, Barry looks a lot different now.
Sounds like they weren't communicating with each other.
I didn't even know who Barry Windham was till AFTER he left WWF and worked for the Florida territory teaming with his brother Kendall and Lex Luger.
So that's what happened. I was wondering why they lost the straps, so suddenly, I mean they were super over.
"I bought a new Porsche" = what could possibly go wrong with that?!
Ask Magnum TA, unfortunately. 😢
I didn't think he could fit in a Porsche
