Agreed! I feel themsame about Terry Taylor. He was a great talent in AWA and UWF. Putting that Red Rooster gimmick on him ruined his wrestling career 😊
@@josereyes1148 This is the same point I was going to make upon reading this initial comment just now. If Vince McMahon couldn't tell himself that he had a huge hand in creating a character, then you had ZERO CHANCE of getting over in the fed
Since they didn't have their looks right away maybe they could have created a storyline so that Bradshaw and Barry team up. Give them a few matches between the two that ends in a draw. Then at some point in a solo feud, Bradshaw would be attacked and Windham would come save him. Then he would propose to go after the guys that attacked him. Then Bradshaw would say in honor of your dad, we should be the Black Jacks. But I liked when eventually Windham turned on him and joined the NWA group with Cornette.
The matches with Bradshaw and Tony Anthony were at the August 19th 1996 Raw taping. That means management had the New Blackjacks idea 6 whole months before they used it. Why such a long wait? That was Windham's first night working for them on this run too, so it would mean that The Stalker gimmick was always going to be temporary and replaced by New Blackjack Barry Windham.
Barry Windham gets The New BlackJacks booked in All Japan Pro Wrestling " Real World Tag League 1997 " 11/15/1997- 12/5/1997. 12/26/1997 ( WWF House Shows ) Chicago ( Rosemont), Illinois: Rosemont Horizon: New Age Outlaws ( Road Dog & Billy Gunn -WWF World Tag Team Champions ) defeated The New BlackJacks ( Barry Windham & Justin ( John ) Bradshaw (WWF return match since AJPW tour )
The story of them having to dye their hair black late on a Saturday night is great, this shoot is really fun to listen to 😂. Crazy to think that there's only 5 years between Barry's debut as a Blackjack and this interview, it's like they are two entirely different guys.
Same!!! He was definitely at his absolute best at that moment in time. Underrated and under-appreciated as him FINALLY being the NWA Heavyweight Champion.
as a kid, i'm sure anyone who watched new blackjacks were bored by them. i know i was. i still bought their action figures, but jakks figured were awesome, i bought all of them. the monster ring was sweet too lol
It's weird hearing an interview from so long ago describe something from longer ago. What I mean is that this interview was from 2002 and the blackjacks were done in 1997. So this was only 5 years after but probably felt like a long time ago. Now this interview is 22 years later and 27 years since the blackjacks were a thing. It just makes time feel crazy. I can't explain it.
I was always a Windham fan but I hated the New Blackjacks. That gimmick was dated. But a cowboy gimmick together would have been better than Smoking Gunns
Ditto. I think Barry had some serious family stuff going on at that time and had to split. To me, Barry was as good as anyone I've ever seen wrestle. Had it been important to him, he would have been one of the best ever. It just wasn't end all be all for him. He wanted to make an excellent living and have fun.
That's amazing. I don't recall the New Blackjacks at all, but those were two excellent choices to fill those shoes. Would have loved to see what Barry & Bradshaw could have done with that given the proper circumstances.
I think there’s such a thing as OVER-gimmicking someone. Sometimes Vince would go TOO far/cartoonish with gimmicks, and it would end up being a detriment, as far as guys getting over. The New Blackjacks were a flop. But in my mind, I can imagine Barry Windham & John Layfield AS THEMSELVES, doing really well as a tag team. 🤷🏻♂️
I never liked the idea of the New Blackjacks. It was a retro tag team from a different era and it lacked originality. The "New" any retread tag team does not work. I would have preferred Barry Windham to tag up with Bradshaw under a new tag team name and an original gimmick and create their own identity.

I could listen to Barry for hours. Great story teller.
Barry Windham was the best back in the day just miss his style so much!
Barry , one of the greatest talents in pro wrestling
Barry Windham was WWE producer in 2007 - 2008 Released by WWE by the end of 2008.
From being Blackjack Mulligan Jr to Blackjack Windham
Life comes at you fast
That was one tag team, i was hoping would have made a go of it. I liked the original black Jack's.
Vince McMahon would've been **way** smarter to just let Barry be Barry. Great storyteller if he's being himself.

Isn't it weird? In 2002, the black jacks probably felt old and awhile ago. But here we are now and it's been 27 years.
When Barry Windham is the small one, its a strange world.
he’s just given up an inch and 40-50 lbs.
