Loved your video. My Dad was the Director of the NC Agronomic Division (where you send the soil tests.. the building is named after him). He grew the NC Agronomic Division from +/- 1968 til the mid 1990s, and was adamant about keeping soil tests free to NC citizens. Many a cuss word was used to persuade the Director of NC Agriculture Dept (Jim Graham) and legislators of the NC Legislature to maintain that status. I'm glad to see that you you used the services.
Jason, The last time I did a soil test, the university extension service sent me back a ton of paperwork. The wording was abbreviations of stuff in the soil, it was all Greek to me, I added cow manure and the garden grew happily ever after.
Thanks for showing us how to do a soil test! I always thought doing one would be complicated! You guys work so hard! Hope all your creations sell at the conference and the "farm Life" is a success for you and your family!
"I'm Jason from Sow the Land and today I am doing something I've never done before..." without fail, the project is educational, well done and fun. Thanks!
Best kept secret in every state is the Cooperative Extension Service at the land grant Universities. Lots of free research-based information and services available :) Usually an office in every county.
It’s so cool to see homesteading & your woodworking (and I’m sure Lorraine’s apothecary line, too) going so well, keeping you busy 😊. That’s fantastic! Couldn’t happen to nicer people.
Loved that colour scheme when you were in the tunnel. Don't know if it was planned that way, but all the more beautiful if not. Sad that Art and Bri have mold in their house. Could you ask your subscribers to help them out? Please?
I know I need to get soil analysis done on 4 separate areas on my property but I've been dragging my feet on getting them done. I'm glad I "tuned in" on this vlog as a reminder. Thank you!
We take apart General Dollar hula hoops for hoops. Some don't last too many seasons in the 100+ degree days we have. So far 30 days in a row over 30, but it's Texas and that's how it is. Anyhoo, these work for us in a pinch. Joy Giles
Hey Jason had my soil tested last year, added some nutrients. Best year of hay for cattle , great corn crop, Green beans galore. Tomatoes were great this year. So testing does pay off. Good luck ! 🍀
It is a good idea to have your soil tested, especially if it is free. You can buy the kits at home Depot but I think they're about fifty bucks. I'm going to check and see if Alabama does the free testing also. Thanks for the information, Jimmy
I have looked into some new things for next spring. At least three require a certain ph level. I'll check with the local extension office for a kit. Great information! Thank you, Jason
I’d say that if you stop by a garden/ plant store near by you can pick up a self garden test kit. I did that a couple of years ago here in East Tennessee and it tested for nitrogen potassium and phosphate. I’m sure the test kit through the stat ag extension is more detailed but if you wanted to do a quick test on your own it’s available. Really enjoy your channel.
Yes right here in Brooklyn NY l am making compost in messy, weedy wild backyard for coming Spring, although i have pots in front of house with greens mostly wild & a few veggies & flowers. BTW how about a trip to your Asheville business so we can see what other projects are in your life.
I wonder why they ask you to mix up different parts of your garden in one lot? Surely different parts of the garden have their own eco environment and possibly different PH? So interesting how they ask you to do it.
There would actually be little variation in a space that small. That is why they have you grab multiple samples and mix them so that you get an "average" sample because if you need to make amendments you will do the same thing to the entire area.
Thanks for sharing. Your soil sample looks great. Thanks for using the Ag Extension, you are helping your larger state community that way. Looking forward to the results.
Hate to say it because it's going to cost me when I finally order. But basic economics, Supply and Demand bell curve. If you can not produce fast enough because there is a demand for your gorgeous works of art at the price you are asking. Your prices may be to low. You might raise your prices a bit. Make sure you are valuing your time and skills.
Ok Jason, couple of questions, Firstly how did Bernice get her name, you always call out to her and Secondly where did you get that stencil from that you use to put Sow the Land on all your gear?
Not sure what to look for online to get a soil test for our area . Would you tell me more . Thank you Gail. My husband thinks we don't need one but we are not growing anything in some of our garden . We have a lot of sand even though we have been composting for several years.
Tommy Toes, LOLOL, I luv it. I will never be able to look at or think of Cherry Tomatoes or Mini-Tomatoes the same way. They will forever be known as Tommy Toes. LOLOL! I'm going to start calling them that at my local grocery store & to my friends. I'm going to see if it catches on up here in Ontario, Canada. Maybe you should look at Trade Marking the name before someone else does. It's a great Marketing handle, that's for sure, to get kids to eat their Tommy Toes (veggies), making it more fun. Hmm? Soil taken from different areas (garden & non-Garden) then mixed together, IMO, will not give a true soil test reading. IMO, testing the area for growing veggies s/b separate from, lets say fruit trees, or grasses to feed animals, as each type of product requires some sort of specific nutrient. Also, the veggie garden area will show a healthier soil condition bcos of the composting. Perhaps, since the soil test is Free during off growing times, you should get multiple pkgs, to send out soil samples of all the different areas you grow different things in, including your forest area. Something to think about if you want a more accurate soil reading for what is growing in that patch. IMO.
My plants just seem to suck. So I did the test. Off the charts on my minerals. PH 6.2. Nitrogen needed 3lb for every 100 sq ft. Said my plot was perfect...so why do my plants suck :(
Hi.... Jason and Lorraine, thank you for sharing your video homestead chicken farmer garden 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 🐔🐓🐥🌱🎥👍👍👍

Some people buy the 'home' test kits. I always send MINE out to the local Ag Ext. CHEAP! (That's why we pay taxes)....JMHO...~Eli..

Visually, your soil looks great. Beautiful garden and lovely TommyToes 🤪. What great harvests you’ve had this year.

Congrats on the views big dog!!
Use schedule 40 piping and rebar. Lasts a long time.

WTG! I hope you don't need much of anything to amend your soil because it's healthy.
Best wishes on all your dreams

Cool video brother
Have the ducks discovered the creek yet?
not yet
I will do a soil test after I move
That way I may be able to grow better food for my family.

"We're not leaf farmers." Lololol
Doesn't your local branch of Dept. of Agriculture do those tests for you?
not sure
I wonder if a hula hoop would work too.
👏👏👏👍👍👍
Love me some TOmmy TOes!
Oh look, hula hoop parts!
It’s not a Sow the Land video without someone saying hi to Bernese. 😂 (please forgive me if I spelled it wrong)
It feels like waiting for a gift in the mail can't stand it
mAYBE YOUR SOIL WILL BE FULL OF LOTS OF MINERALS LIKE... GOLD & SILVER TOO! LOL! HA!
