- Welcome to this follow up video about my TASCAM DR-05X. One of the reasons I originally bought this, and one of the things I couldn’t get to work, was using an external microphone with it. Well, now I know why I couldn’t get that to work and I know how to get it to work. If you are experiencing similar problems, watch this vide, it may just help!

Thank you for the video. You were not the last person on Earth to find out about that little adaptor .... Apparently I was.
Thank you again. Your helpfulness is only matched by your fashion sense. 😂
Glad I could help!
You are amazing! It was annoying that a "technician" recommended two products that don't actually work together... I wouldn't have worked this out without this video.
I am glad it helped, it really is a great little recorder.
Thank you for this video. This helps a lot! Cheers from Romania!
Thank you for watching and glad it helped!
Salut Cristi! Sper ca esti bine!
Thanks! Hard to believe their own website manual doesn't specify if it's TRS (3 pole) or TRRS (4 pole)...so TRS mic it is! Thanks again!
historically all audio gear has been trs jack connectors, trrs is for stereo cell phones.
the one with 4 pins are called TRRS type where they have two sound channels, one audio and one ground, but for tascam you need 3 pin, which has one ground and two for audio.
GOD BLESS YOU SIR!!!! I have the same lavalier mic and was having the same problem! Thank you!!!!!
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the video. It took me a while to find someone that verified which connector exactly works with the DR-05x.
I liked the close up and concise video.
Thanks for watching! Glad it helped.
Thank you, I have literally just collected my Tascam DR-05X and rushed out to by a lavalier mic ( the only one they had @ 50Euros) and when I was testing it, same as yours nothing, the only negative is that my mic did not come with the adapter, so now I am trying to hunt for an adapter.
So close yet so far

If you look for a 4 to 3 pin adapter that is what you need, I believe they are available on Amazon.
Gump - ura damn genius!!! Outstanding, Private Gump!!! My technical ineptitude would likely not have figured this out for some time - if ever LOL Many thanks, much success and God bless. 🙏
Thanks for the help. Solved a headscratcher for me. Now we can record better intro's for the episodes.
Much appreciated.
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Hi Ken, thanks for this video. I hit upon the same problem just today after receiving my TASCAM DR-05X and I tried a RODE Smartlav Mic. Adapter now ordered.
Glad I could help!
Wow.... I feel SUPER SILLY now! Haha I was doing the exact same thing you were doing until I saw your video. I had exactly what I needed and it was right under my nose the entire time. Apparently I have some learning to do. THANK YOU!
I am just glad it is helping, when I was doing the video I was thinking that I hoped I wasn't the only person that didn't know this!
Thank you my friend...Love the shirt
Thanks for watching! :)
I've been pulling my hair out for the last hour and a half, trying different settings to get my lav mic to work! I just ordered an adapter, so we'll see how it goes. Thanks!
Nice video, that solve my problem! Thank you! Cheers from Brazil!
Thank you so much! I was wondering why my Lav mic had another plug that seemed to be the same size. I wasted an entire video because I thought it was recording and wasn't Haha! Thanks agian! Have a wonderful new years!
Glad this helped 🙂
@@CanadianRetroThings Sure did! Keep up the good work!
sound ! fixed my problem 2 thank you
Glad it helped!
Thank you, you solved my problem! All the best from the UK.
Glad it helped!
Good to know ... Nice one .... if people watch and comment at least it's good for motivation.
Good one 👍👍👍
You rock! I was on the point of throwing it in my garden.
Wow awesome video, at least you took the time to try and find out what the issue actually was.
Thanks! I am just happy that I am able to do everything I wanted to with this recorder now! I can't imagine not having it now :)
thanks! i have to order the other cable. I had no idea about the 2 stripe vs 3 stripe
I'm happy it helped.
Good job and thanks for sharing, your audio sounds a lot clearer with that device.
Thanks! And it's easier to transfer over to my editing software, so, extra bonus!
You are a F-ing legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!............... thank you!
Happy to help! :)
Thank you 😊
Thanks 😊That's a helpful tip👍
It has made this recorder 10 times more useful for me! Thanks for watching :)
Thank you so much for this video it helped me so much!
Nice thanks !!!!
Thank you very much! I had the same problem. You are amazing.
Glad it helped!
saved me - genius
Mate that's amazing, you fixed my problems
Glad it helped!
Hello the video is very intersting i am french and i did not understand everything Can we connect the TASCAM with a celle phone and camcorder ? Thanks you
I have not tried it with a cellphone or camcorder but I do hook it up to my computer using the USB mini jack on the side to be used as my microphone for streaming and voice over stuff.
Thank you!
Your welcome! :)
Perfecto 👌 ya encontré la solución al problema! Muchas gracias amigo
Life saving. Thank you!!
Glad it helped!
Sounds much cleaner. Nice work!
Thanks! And its much easier to use :)
@@CanadianRetroThings Yep...gotta watch those tips, rings and sleeves.
do you know how I can record my dj mix through my mixer? I don't get any signal through the aux.....
I believe there is a setting in the menu for powered input or no power. If it is on the wrong setting it causes problems. That might help?
Hi how are you?, I have the same external mic, adapter and recorder. You know why it doesnt work in my recorder?... The adapter and mic works in other devices and the mic entrance recorder works as well with other cables but not with the powerdewise.
I am not sure, check the settings for powered mic, if that is on it may prevent it from working
Hi, when you use external mic, does the recorder record only from external mic? Becouse Tascam DR-05 model record both, and from external mic and from recorder mices and no possible turn off microphones who is installed in recorder. (i dont know whay they do that, becouse its more noises)
LIFE SAVER!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Glad it helped!
wow man thanks!
I just bought it and was quite disapointed it didn'T work with my deity v.lav...
Thanks for watching!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! YOU SAVED MY LIFE TODAY! Hehehe
Glad I could help!
+ for the DR-05 - make sure that the MIC POWER is set to ON as well, otherwise it won't work.
I haven't played around with that setting so did not know that, thanks!
You are a life saver, thank you.
I'm glad I could help!
Can I connect the dr-05x to my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7. It's Android.
I have never connected it to anything but my computer (and have never used a Galaxy Tab 7), it connects over USB and works great as a microphone for Zoom calls, voice over etc. but I have no idea about the Galaxy, sorry.
So the only question left is...
Will it CoCo?
I was unable to use the external input to record the CoCos cassette output with this device... Probably an impedance mismatch. 🤓
I have not tried it on my CoCo, I can't believe I never thought of trying it on my CoCo....
@@CanadianRetroThings if you can transfer WAV files to it, you should at least be able to load from it, but I had no luck saving to it.
The Zoom H4N works great, although serious overkill and more expensive.
@@CanadianRetroThingsturns out if you add a 300 ohm resistor across the mic input (CoCo CasOut) you _can_ in fact save and load software with the Color Computer! 🎉
@@CoCoNutBob Good to know, I will have to try that, thanks!
I have a microphone with two rings, but still no sound after I try to play the audio back. Any suggestions? I’m wondering if I need a software update.
Check the settings, make sure the mic settings are right. Powered/not powered etc.
@@CanadianRetroThings Thank You bro. I had to go into the settings. I’m going to follow you now.
Thanks dude👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Yeah I am looking for a 4 to 3 or TRRS to TRS 🙄👍
So what are you using to record audio for the majority of your video? (Mic and software etc)
For most recording I use a middle of the road lapel mic (It's a few years old, the name is worn off but I remember it fell in the middle of the price range for what was available). For software I am using Power Director which has minimal audio editing capabilities but works well enough (I plan on upgrading soon). For streaming or voice over I use the TASCAM directly as an input device.
link to the adapter, no idea what its called?
The adapter came with a set of microphones I bought. It is called a 4 to 3 pin adapter.
Thanks for this helpful video! I have a question. I want to use TASCAM DR-05x to record phone calls (for podcasts). How can I do that? :)
Unfortunately that is something I know nothing about, possibly you could plug a splitter into the phone and have one line as headphone/mic and the other into the audio in on the TASCAM?
I'm thinking just use a speaker phone and record as usual. But your probably talking of a smart phone. I want to do pretty much the same as you but with a Samsung Galaxy 7 Tab. It runs on Android.
I saw a review of the TASCAM DR-05 (without the X) and it had the issue of recording using the external mic and the integrated mics at the same time and there was nothing you could do about this. Does this model do the same thing?
No, when you plug an external mic in the built in are shut off.
I’m finding mine records on external internal mic at the same time. Very annoying
@@generalriddlez I have never had that problem with mine.
can i connect tow microphone together?
If you use a splitter on the Mic In port and run two microphones to it it will work but the microphones will be recorded together on one file.
I thought mine was not working. Turns out I did not push the male n female end on the adapter hard enough to connect. After that, worked.
It is a great little unit, I use it almost daily now :)
Saved my life
Glad I could help 😀
could you a shotgun boom mic to to the ext mic and if so what connector?
The connector is a 3.5mm jack, an adapter for the boom mic should work all though I have never tried so cannot say for sure.
@@CanadianRetroThings my goal is to use this Tascam with a directional shotgun mic in a parabolic dish , So i can boost its range , my outcome is to listen and record at the same time.
@@shaunmcshea8534 I currently use mine as a portable recorder with a lapel mic and I plug it in to my computer to use the built in mics for voice over and live broadcasting.
good that it was a simple thing. Tho I guess you mightve spent a lot on various microphones for that.
Luckily I didn't buy any new microphones, I had planned to but hadn't gotten around to it yet!
@CanadianRetroThings Perhaps you can help. I want to use a XLR mic with my Tascam DR-05. I was told to get a SES-TR-153 cable but that isn't working either. Any suggestions?
Sorry, I've never used one of those mics and am unfamiliar with them. My best guess would be to check in the TASCAM menu that Mic Power is on? (assuming the XLR mic requires power, if it is self powered Mic Power should be off)
@@CanadianRetroThings thank you for your assistance. Best wishes
So is that connection a stereo or mono connection? What I would like to try is playing back some of my jam recordings on cassette and running that into my dr-05x in order to get the songs in wav files, there are a lot of cassette to mp3 recorders but none that record to wav
The Mic/Ext IN is a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack so as long as you have a stereo cable connecting it, it should record in stereo.
@@CanadianRetroThings ok thanks for the quick reply I’ll try it out
If you're serious about recording your music, you should consider a Zoom H4N... It's a virtual four channel recording studio in a box not much bigger than this one.
Will the built in mics at the same time the external is going ?
No, when you plug in an external mic it disables the built in mics.
@@CanadianRetroThings dam was hoping to use the external for voice and the stereo for guitar.
@@thedrunkenfish5855 You could use a split cable and 2 Mics but then vocals and guitar would be mixed on the same stereo channels, I am assuming you were hoping to record 2 separate stereo tracks.
Can i use it with an Arimic dual microphone? The Arimic dual hasn't it's own battery.
I have not used that brand with it, but the mic I use also does not have a battery. There is a setting in the menu for powered or non powered mics.
@@CanadianRetroThings Thank you sir!
saluto dalla italia ottimo video
Thanks for watching 😀
We’re you getting a fluttering noise in the background with the 3 ring cable?
With the lapel mic I was getting nothing but a buzz and my desk mic I was getting some audio but it sounded, at full volume, like I was talking into a glass about 10 feet away.
@@CanadianRetroThings I connected the Rode videomic NTG and out the 3 ring TRSS cable into the Tascam. Awful!!! You think it will be rectified by swapping it to a 2 ring TRS jack?
@@TheGrumpyExplorer The TASCAM, as far as I know, is designed to work with the 2 ring jack. The 3 ring jack is for plugging directly into things like phone jacks which are both input and output (headphones and mics)
do you have mic power on or off?
The mic I am using here does not have a power switch so it is always on.
@@CanadianRetroThings I was meaning do you have microphone power set up in the tascam. In recording settings there is option for power microphone or not. Can you please check that for me. Cheers.
@@BlazeOnMoto The Mic Power is set to On in the Record Settings.
@@CanadianRetroThings thanks!
At least say what the adapters called wtf
The adapter used is a 3.5mm 4 pole to 3 pole adapter
its a trs to trrs adapter, most audio devices use trs and most phones use trrs
