    I'm doing KonMari method now. It's good to hear your perspective because Kondo is a little too straight-forward with her process. People like me are sentimental, and it's hard to know your intuition at first. Thanks for sharing your journey. I know I can do it! :)

    I love that other people are starting to cleanse their lives of unnecessary junk. I get rid of things on a regular basis. I'm basically the opposite of a hoarder. Having too many things gives me anxiety. I rarely form attachments to things, but I'm curious to see if that'll change with my first baby on the way lol

    I took all my papers (about 60 years worth) and scanned them, then saved them on a flash drive. Nothing to do with joy. I kept what was essential (British Driver's Licence Green Card. German citizenship. South African ID. That's it. Life is much lighter now. :)

    Like you, I'm very attached to my paper stuff from my old journals and musings on scraps of paper to my old worksheets from elementary. I found Marie Kondo's book in the middle of my decluttering process (therefore my order of decluttering is not in the order in which she suggested), so i had everything out on my floor from clothing to books to komono (it was a nightmare). As of right now, the sentimental papers I've weeded out are chilling in a box for me to further sort through later. The things that I did find the courage to let go and recycle are probably happier now because they are going to serve another purpose, and I'm much happier as well :) Thank you for sharing your journey with us! I can't wait for the other videos in your tidying series♥

    I love this book and did the same thing on Monday for my clothes. I don't have much clutter already, but I had two garbage bags of donations and three bags of garbage. Now, I have to tackle papers though. ^^ The cool thing about KonMari's method is that it can be applied to everything...even computer organization, which is what I'm struggling with now.

    Books and papers was the largest category for me. I went to art school. Watching myself grow as an artist was encouraging experience. I nearly kept everything.

    I'm going through tech right now. I have a huge amount of old tech: cords, drives, power adaptors, etc. When I say I have a huge amount, I'm not kidding. I was actually getting physically ill when I began gathering the items. However, I've managed to sort enough to realize that I can do this although it might take a long time.

    • @lavendaire
      @lavendaire  9 років тому +2

      Evangeline Brown I have so much old tech too! It seems like such a waste to discard because they're functioning, but just old/obselete. Like old cords for old cellphones and old digital cameras. Make sure to e-recycle!

    i think books and papers would be the hardest for me. I have a TON of books well into the hundreds and i write my own novels so i have many journals and notebooks will character designs, scenes written out etc. im not sure if ill be able to part with them.

      Kayla Watson You don’t have to throw them if you love them. no matter how many journals you have, you do not want to have the mindset that you have to minimize and or throw or donate a lot of things, because you just have to get rid of those that doesn’t spark joy and keep the stuff that makes you happy so everyday you’re happier

    • @Edriely
      @Edriely 5 років тому +2

      Yeah, if I were to try and attempt the KonMari method the books and papers category would be the one that would be trimmed down the least. I have a ton of books and I have a really hard time getting rid of any whether I liked the book or not. There’s always been a small part of me that thinks getting rid of a book even by donating it is going to hurt its feelings or something. Same is true with stuffed animals.

    I tried it out with my clothes and it was amazing. I'm very happy with the results of it and I am interested in decluttering the rest of my things this way. I have started sorting through my jewelry and I've been shocked to discover that I wear a lot of earrings, a few specific necklaces, a few pins, and like no bracelets. I will occasionally wear ones that I'm sentimental about or that go with my outfit, but I realized that I've never really been a bracelet person. Also, a few years ago, my mom bought me a little jewelry dresser to store my jewelry in. I don't like it. It closes everything off, the doors on the sides don't work very well and I feel like I'm holding onto a bunch of stuff I don't want. I honestly want to finish sorting through my jewelry and just get rid of it entirely, because I have limited furniture space in my room anyway. Hmm...lots to consider.

    Hi girl, I've been watching your videos. I am currently halfway the Marie Kondo book. In the mean time, I haven't really started the method yet, BUT I am trying to apply it in a small way here and there where I can before I actually start the big clean-up. Right now I am discarding things when I run into them (i.e. when I am ironing clothes I will throw them out when they don't spark joy). Right now I feel like I have so much "stuff" around me that I don't even need....

    I'm currently looking through my books and sorting those out, it seems I've bought more books that I felt were 'interesting' on their own.
    Instead of being interesting for *me* specifically. Like a book with terrifying Cinderella-dolls. I was so thunderstruck by their scaryness (it was a common book) that I went and bought them, curiously staring in those empty eyes, until it freaked me out and I put the book down.
    Now I've decided those books need to go. I don't enjoy looking at them, they're scary, I've taken a picture of them and goodbye, off to some weirdo that collects scary books.

    I've been watching ur vids about "tydeing" and as u said books/papers were easier than clothes I've to ask _ Can I start by that item, without "disarange" the process?

    • @lapanthanim
      @lapanthanim 8 років тому +4

      +cristina diaz (skinny) Since Lavendaire hasn't gotten to this yet, maybe I'll chime in. Kondo explains in the book that the reason for the order she gives is because with clothes it's easier to start developing your sense for which items spark joy and which don't. I'm guessing she's probably right this is universal.
      If you find you can't part with something but you're not sure if it sparks joy, Kondo suggests considering whether you're holding on to sentimental links to the past, or (unconsciously) acting on fears of the future. If so, you make your peace and "thank" the item for whatever purpose it served (including feelings it evoked in you, lessons that owning it taught you, etc.) before letting it go. If not, then what I did is picture myself wearing the item, what I'd wear it with, when I'd wear it, where I'd wear it, etc. Is there something else I could easily (or would rather) replace it with? Asking myself those questions and running through that kind of visualization in my mind made the process easier and easier.
      On top of that, something cool happened: There were some items of clothing I almost discarded because I wasn't sure. I almost never saw these items, and not using an item is usually a criterion for discarding. But in my case it was simply a case of "out of sight, out of mind." In fact it turns out there can be a sense of "obligation" to throw perfectly well-loved things out too, and that's not what this method is about. After deciding to keep these items, I've noticed I wear them lots and appreciate them much more than I did before! Without a doubt I've developed greater appreciation for all of my current wardrobe thanks to this method.

    "If you have a lot of unread books or books you hang onto in the belief you’ll reread them one day, Kondo recommends getting rid of them.
    She says that as a result of practicing the KonMari method herself, she owns no more than 30 books. Kondo personally considers that number ideal."

    These are the sentiments and lifestyle of someone who isn't any kind of voracious reader. At all. If you love to read, if you are seeking to live a life of the mind, avoid her suggestions and leave the tidying up to people who obviously have different interests and lifestyle values than the typical book lover.

    but what about when you have kids? Not everyone can afford to buy all the books again for kids. I do understand the "one day I'll loss weight and fit this again" thing, but what about the "in a few years this would save me a ton of money" thing, like with children's books. I guess in that case it's your own judgement? I love minimalism but it does not seem to work for a family with kids that are growing and changing rapidly.
