EXTRA TIME Not sure about why people are being so negative about Merino - won the most duels in all of Europe last year (huge tick for Arteta obviously) and just because a player has been playing in Spain for a side other than Real Madrid or Barcelona doesn't mean they can't be a brilliant player - would think Arsenal fans of all would know this best when the last time we plucked out a midfielder from La Liga in their late 20's who was on the periphery of the Spanish squad we ended up with Santi Cazorla, and we all know how brilliant he was. The Spanish league is so technical and produces lots and lots of great midfielders who would thrive in the premier league - but a lot of them are just happy making millions in their country of birth with great weather and food rather than trying to branch across to the Premier League. I don't think us English fans realise that a lot of people in other countries really don't care about being "Premier League proven" which is why some never make the move young and have happy careers staying in Spain. Anyway interested to know both your thoughts on this as every time I've seen him play he's looked very good.

We didnt need a runner like walker, trent sitting back making long passes we desperately needed but Southgate would never drop the older players like maguire, walker or kane etc even pickford. Glad maguire was injured for selection because we got to see how good guehi was who imo was our best defender all tournament. Would have been better with konsa/guehi CB with trent RB and stones in CDM next to rice and rice could have gone further forward a little like what mainoo was doing but he would also have the positional awareness to drop deeper when needed. The lineup was doomed from the start and then not dropped under performing players. Surrounded saka with foden and walker was completely inhibiting saka in every way, stones was the only city player who did well in the tournament.
Charles, to continue the Merino discussion, my opinion is he will be in a rotation with Partey and/or Jorginho to keep fresh legs and limit the chances for knocks and injuries.

I'm sure Lee would happily step in even though it might turn out to be temporary, as the experience would be invaluable, he would get a preview of what it's like to step up to that level, and if he wins us the Nations League (which we got relegated in under Southgate) and gets us promoted back to League A again, then he would certainly make a name for himself and make himself a top candidate for the longer term position. Promoting the U21 manager to the first team worked for Spain, maybe it will work for us. Lee also knows many if not all of the younger players and likely managed several too.
A club always keen to sign injured players like Tierney in the hopes to strike a good deal is Fiorentina, though after Torreira I doubt the two clubs even speak anymore. On Southgate’s replacement, the crowd-pleasing option seems to be Klopp but Klopp’s teams need time to bond. If you look at the first matches of Liverpool every season, they don’t always do too well, including a 7-0 defeat. What a national team coach does not have is precisely time, because you only train a few days during International breaks and you often rotate players depending on fitness and availability. You need someone more impactful, in my opinion. Klopp would look great on paper and he’s a fantastic motivator, but a national team is a different beast (and you’ve had proofs aplenty: the likes of Capello, Eriksson, etc)

Merino would improve the squad options. Deeper squad, more rotations. Don’t think he’d start but great to have on the bench.

If you look at the first matches of Liverpool every season, they don’t always do too well, including a 7-0 defeat. What a national team coach does not have is precisely time, because you only train a few days during International breaks and you often rotate players depending on fitness and availability. You need someone more impactful, in my opinion. Klopp would look great on paper and he’s a fantastic motivator, but a national team is a different beast (and you’ve had proofs aplenty: the likes of Capello, Eriksson, etc)

I, for one, would find it difficult to stomach even with the exceptional strides the team has made over the past 2 seasons. I guess my question is, does Arsenal need to win a major trophy this season?
For me, a Merino would be a floor raiser on the likes of an Elneny etc. A player I could see being used more than the likes of an Elneny.
For the money, improved squad player, but they we will not get much back in resale in a few years' time.
El neny didn't even play. He was only here last year because of an injury & the club giving him a pity contract.

Keep Tierney on a pay as you play contract, Keep ESR, why buy a dud like Merino, when we already have Vieira. As Edu always sells too cheaply, sell Vieira, why strengthen a rival?

Tierney needs to go back to celtic even if it means we pay half his wages on a loan. They'll take him back plus we won't have to pay 25% of any transfer fee to them should they offer a low ball transfer figure.
