Abandoned 70s Toyota Forklift | Will It Lift Again?

  • Ike has had this old Toyota forklift for years, and it’s been sitting abandoned behind one of his houses for at least 8 years. It ran when parked (but needed maintenance). We need a forklift for our new shop, so Ike brought over the old Toyota gas forklift and we get it running and put it back in service!

    Forklift tech here, looks to be a Toyota 3fgpu10. Parts will be hard to come by as Toyota marks up older parts an insane percentage. Best bet would be an aftermarket supplier using the above model # or using the carburetor to source a kit. I can help more with better pictures and parts sourcing, as the company I work for is a Toyota dealer.

    Forklift is a great addition. I love that it's the classic Toyota lasts forever forklift. They had to take the zinc out of the oil because it plugs catalytic converters along with lead. But for off-road and race applications it's great for flat tablet cams

    Build a platform or shelf around the inside perimeter of your new shop. Make it big enough and high enough to put all your small projects on. Since you have a forklift now you can lift them up out of the way. Would help create more floor space

    Once Junkyard Diggs is through that property of cars, Isaac should invite them out with their camper for a few weeks to get a bunch of his cars running+driving so he can start moving them. Isaac we all see you trying hard on your channel, but they'd be able to knock out a bunch of cars in a short timeframe of all the cars with little problems you don't have time for. I'm sure they'd do it for free just for the content on their own channel 😂

    Zinc additives in oil tend to ruin catalytic converters over time. Safe, of course, to use in older machines like this and pre-cat cars.

    • @Ratkill9000
      @Ratkill9000 2 роки тому +2

      Not always the case. Zinc is used in high mileage engine oils to help.

    • @c0c0asauce
      @c0c0asauce 2 роки тому +2

      @@Ratkill9000 The active ingredient is phosphorus and that is added through a component called ZDDP (Zinc dialkyldithiophosphate.) For products that meet the ILSAC GF-5 specification, the phosphorus levels for the oil must be less than 800 ppm phosphorus. The ILSAC level for phosphorus has been reduced to protect the catalytic converter and other emission protection equipment.
      I usually use a ZDDP additive in my first starts and in older style engines with solid tappet/lifter setups. Apparently the additive is illegal in some places. I bet those places do strict emissions testing and have very high rates of catalytic converter theft.

    Put an LPG carb on that lift so you can use it inside!
    As for fork extensions, some C channel works nicely, but keep in mind that with longer forks lift capacity is essentially reduced. Be careful with that.
    And since this one can not side-track like that three wheel piggyback one, get a mower front axle and make a steerable dolly out of it if you plan on moving more long stuffs (boards, pipes, metal stock) with it. The dolly won't have the same capacity as the lift, but at least you will be able to move stuff with it instead of doing that whole 'dog with a long stick' maneuver.

    I've been meaning to tell you guys for a while now to look into Brad Pen oil. It's specifically formulated for flat tappet cams, as it has high levels of ZDDP. I run it in all my air cooled VW builds and I've never had an issue with a flat or prematurely worn cam.

    one thing i know is that thse forklifts use a toyota car engine mightn be industrial adapted (like a chaindrive for the cam stuff like that )

    A good fleet oil for you guys would be Rotella 15w-40 diesel oil. It has enough ZDDP in it to protect all your flat tappet engines. If you want a synthetic, or a better flow rate when cold, you can use Rotella T6 5w-40. Both are great oil and better than a modern SM/SN/SP+ZDDP additive, imo. The SBC in your old truck will love either, as well. You could run this oil in pretty much everything you guys have.
    Both can also be used with wet clutches, too. So, motorcycles/atv's.👍

I had made my own compound before using heavy grease and some grit from the shop bench grinder. I didn't have any heavy grease that day, so I tried using STP. It would NOT work! Any time a particle of grit got pinched while in the STP solution, the grit pushed out of the space, leaving only STP between the two surfaces! Try it, its truly amazing!

    At the very least, measure up and replace the lift chains. Common fail point if not regularly lubricated. And since it sat out in weather for “8 years” it’s an easy insurance policy to add on your lift. Congrats on getting it running though. As for parts, TVH has millions of them. The website will probably advertise Total Source, but no worries. I’ve dealt with them for 9 years and they do pretty good on availability on parts. I too would upgrade tires to solid rubber pneumatic, but unfortunately you’ll probably have to have them pressed on the rims, so keep that in mind. Keep up the good work fellas. 👍🏻

    Can wait to see what this year brings. Congratulations on how far you guys have come. Don’t forget to take that forklift on the cars and cameras Grand Prix. Will it be faster than the kubota?

    Seeing as it runs on pump gas you might consider converting it to propane. It's safer to use indoors that way. You might consider pallor racks to store the bigger toys. Think of them like shelves for the projects.

    You got a winch. That’s a huge upgrade. I consider it a requirement now for picking up dead equipment.

    HNY to you guys too! Tell Chas. he's using up all his newbie slack; we want to see the baby pictures we know he has! That is his viewer task for the New Year! Can't offer much help beyond it's "some 70". Toyota has a strong dealer network down here in Dallas and on the West Coast- or, BION, call a Kubota parts counter- one here is awesome! But you will need the model number! Oh, and that carb may not be original- just about any automotive carb matched to the displacement will work. Oh, and flush out the tank and the strainer/sock on the fuel pick up- your outside pump was pulling pretty good to empty it, but when you put new fuel in you stirred up the grick in the bottom of the tank. I'm from Texas and Louisiana- and I think Charles will know what grick is, cuz it's the same stuff down here! FR

    Just so you know. ..forklifts like to sink when your outside even though you have pneumatic tires on it ..it's an outside truck..when it rains out ..it'll sink..just a few drops of 90 weight on the lift chains..check your hydraulic oil..it may be creamy color ..change it ..as far as part's..check your local forklift shops ..if they don't have parts ..they will know somewhere to check..
    Good luck..👍👍👍

      I work at a fork lift dealership, and the techs prefer WD-40 on the chains. WD doesn’t get grimy from collecting dust and dirt like heavier oils and grease. Prevents chain wear in the long run.

    Hey guys you should add some gauges in another video with a big tachometer as one also maybe a wet small shot of nos with a carb adapter plate and a second fuel pump would be cool 😎 for fun
