At their absolute primes, Askren vs Khabib would've been extremely competitive, that tells you something.
@olidouze8022 Yeah he would've kept his aura and legacy as an undefeated fighter had he stayed retired but maybe money was more important, he took the chance at competing with the best in the UFC and he came short, big time.
@ap4702 Lima, Aoki and Koreshkov were solid fighters. Had he entered into the UFC earlier he was likely he would have seen a few losses but he would've still seen a lot success, easily one of the best grapplers in the WW division.

Ben Askren's Career is really anything but embarrassing or failed. His MMA record sits at 19-2-0 and he has multiple medals, including several golds, in different official wrestling competitions. He is set for life and has a beautiful wife and kids. Given that 90% of the population would never want to even set their foot in the ring I would say that is a pretty impressive career.
Meh only medal that matters when you're that good is the 3 Olympic ones. 1 in particular. believe when i say he would trade them all for just one Olympic one.
I never heard of Askren until the Paul fight. My initial reaction was "this guys an idiot". But my curiosity led me to do some research on him. This man really has won at life, as a fighter and family man. Yeah he had two embarassing losses but he's so humble about everything he does. There's not enough of that anymore
Um.... He was never humble in mma. Never. That's why he got dogged so bad. He was cocky as fk with a big mouth, calling out and making fun of everyone. And he had a coward fighting style. He was quickly and ruthlessly found out in the UFC. And what do you know ? Getting smashed finally humbled that big mouth. Funny how that happens.
@@JaemanEdwards what does a "coward fighting style" mean? he won 19 matches, all within the scope of the rules. I don't see what's cowardly about that. And is losses? you'd have to be a real loser to not be able to beat up an old man who needs a hip replacement, so I'm not gonna hold them against him...
I don't associate the Paul fight with his career, that boxing and it wasn't a surprise to many what the outcome would be. He seemed happy with the payday and you could tell by his body being worse than normal.

Underrated? lol?? He is extremely overrated like what? He was considered to be one of the best welterweights on the planet, and the dude can't strike :)) and i don't mean just punch, nah, the dude CANNOT punch, kick, knee or eblow. I can head down my street and find 10 random dudes that can strike better than Askren and they never took any martial arts lessons. It seems deplorable and completely pathetic and unacceptable to me to do a sport for 10+ years and not practice like half of it =))) Askren is the most overrated fighter in History and your comment is trash, he also wiped his arse with his name and legacy for 500k when he accepted the Paul fight, only a fool would have not seen the outcome considering Ben's childish, laughable and sad striking. What he did prove when joining the UFC was that Bellator and OneFC has sub par competition, and sub par competition that cannot wrestle for sheit which is why Ben managed to be champ in both of these companies, but got destroyed once he faced the more well rounded fighters in the UFC. Besides Israel Adesanya being in a division with pretty much no grappling threats which is why him as a striker managed to get the belt, but other than him there is currently no UFC champ that is not well rounded, Ben was and will never be close to UFC champ caliber because he is missing half of the skillset for this sport, and it's extremely laughable to me that people would ever consider him "one of the greats", nah, he just proved MMA is full with dumbass strikers that also practice only half the sport :))
I hope Ben Askren watches this. He deserves to know that many people admire and respect him for what he has done in the sport. Not all of us mma fans judge fighters at their worst. It says a lot when even Jorge expressed a desire to train with Ben after Colby beat him up but acknowledged it was impossible because of the way he acted after winning.
Many more bum losers who haven't and will never accomplish 1/1000 of what Ben has, who don't have 1/1000 the money Ben does, who don't have a loving family and self respecf. Yah, I'm sure the opinion of those who "laugh" at him are a huge bother to him😂

@FinbarrOSleibhin Embarrassing. Exactly what I would expect out of an Askren fan. The B leagues are all better than the UFC. Just like in the NBA. Everyone knows the real test is the Euro league. If you can win there you are basically the next Jordan.
In a sport full of arseholes, Ben remained a man of perspective and credibility. Nobody wants to play as him on UFC 4, but I'm sure he's more at peace in himself than Conor.
It's funny how a good part of the most admired MMA fighters are horrible human beings; McGregor, Khabib, Khamzat, Jon Jones...if they weren't in the UFC, everybody would hate them.
I knew very little about him. I just assumed he was a loser, I never knew he had such an accomplished wrestling /fighting career. I had no idea. This video opened my eyes. Thank you.
Honestly, I don’t care if Lawler was “out” or not. Fighting 50% mental and based on fight IQ. If Lawler wasn’t smart enough to not let his arm go completely limp while in a submission. That’s on him and that’s a loss, more mentally than physically.
Except you can see he has a thumbs up the entire time he was in no danger anyone who understands bjj knows that was a face crank at best there’s no such thing as going out from that its nonsense that people keep perpetuating lies
This is really inspiring. Askren was spot on about people projecting their own fears of being in a similar situation like getting knocked out. I know I felt that way after the Flying Knee. Yet, I also remember he did an interview 2 days later on Monday after that fight. That alone showed who Askren really was as a man. Everything he said actually inspired me. Made me realize that even if I'm embarrassed on a big stage, Life still goes on. Great video!
Ben Askren shows a lot of heart fronting after his losses. But he can say all he wants. His career will always be remembered for those meme knockouts. And he brought it all on himself. Big mouths always end up getting shut.

As far as the Lawler fight, that bulldog choke is very dangerous. Anyone who has fully been in that will tell you how it feels. Especially when a machine like Ben Askren has it. I am with Herb.
I agree I don’t ever think it warranted a rematch, everyone and their mum thought Robbie went out, and more than likely he did, just muddies the water when he stands back up
The only desire for the rematch came from people who believed the outcome was unfair because Ben "deserved" to get demolished. Haters. It revealed Dana's true colors, as well. He used his position of power to get rid of a fighter he had no use for to profit from punishing one he didn't like in his personal gladiatorial arena. He's totally right that Dana's a scumbag and the only thing I think was understated in the video is how much this whole saga backs that up. There's no way Dana wasn't aware of Ben's health issues. He was buying a lamb for slaughter and threw a fit when it skipped the first scheduled execution.
People train all their lives to resist attacks and when they see the ultimate choke defense they often scoff. Sure you can get lucky with your defense or you can simply go limp. There's no point choking you when you die so they eventually let go.
I respect for him getting out there and trying. He fought and competed in the UFC. A lot of critics and people laughing have likely never been in an MMA fight. As you've said, he's also got other endeavors outside of fighting. He probably got a good bag from boxing Jake Paul and is comfortably retired and able to provide for himself and his family. That's a bigger win in my book. None of us can defeat Father Time and the gradual breakdown of bodies.

I've never been a fan of Askren's antics in the UFC, but I always admired how he was able to stay composed even after devastating losses. You learn a lot about character and the importance of mindset by watching how elite fighters respond to losses. The Rousey's of the world are crushed by them and are never the same again. Others learn from them and put them in the proper context within the greater scheme of life. This was a great documentary. Keep em coming! Sub'd.

Was he a failure though? He spent his prime in another promotion, had one fluke win, one fluke loss, then his body fell apart, it’s just kind of unfortunate
Well made y'all! I'm a fellow Missourian but never really found Ben's story until he was retiring from mma. Incredible, it is unfortunate so many are so quick to judge and cling to negativity.
Grew up in Missouri as well. Now in Idaho. My son is in martial arts and started wrestling this year in first grade along with playing hockey. Gotta keep 'em busy!
I feel like Ben Askren and Dominick Cruz both had similar careers in the sense that they had so much time wasted. Cruz due to injuries, and Askren due to his issues with Dana White delaying his entry into the UFC. In my opinion, Askren entered the UFC 4 years too late to be a true contender for the title. It would’ve been really interesting to have seen him enter the UFC much earlier than he did
The problem with UFC fans is that there are literally multiple journeymen who are referred to as ‘legends’. It makes the whole sport look bargain basement. Jake Paul has beaten 3 UFC ‘legends’… so far! 😂
Ben has been a legend for a long time. As a wrestler, i was familiar with him already. His decade-long unbeaten atreak was something else. Many mma fans exposed themselves by not even knowing how good Ben was in his prime
lmfao stop the cap, ben has never been considered a legend by anyone except for rogan and his followers. anyone who watched pride knows askren just doesnt compare.... look at Askrens resume, its a fucking joke. you really think askren would have the same career against guys like anderson silva, nogueira or sakuraba???? anyone who says ben is anywhere close to a legend has exposed themselves for being severely ignorant and unknowledgeable in MMA. Rogan did not do you guys a favor with that.
Most people who do train some type of martial art and watch MMA don’t train wrestling, stand up arts are just more popular. More adults do BJJ than wrestling because wrestling is something you need to get into in high school. I don’t think fans “exposed” themselves
@anon2427 He was undefeated for a decade. A lot of the fans I interact with are clueless about most things. Maybe they should follow wrestling a little more then. And I started wrestling at 9. Not to get into high school. Goofy comment
I think Ben deserves respect not despite his late career, but specifically for how he conducted his later career. The man didn't let pride come between him and getting a few more big big old bags of money before retiring for good, and was secure enough and able to take ut as good as he dished it out so well that he is not haunted by any of it, and returned to coach wrestling with an extra couple million dollars for his lack of insecurity!
He also could’ve easily made excuses. He could’ve very validly posted about his hip physical therapy and upcoming surgeries but he didn’t. Askren never gave any excuse other than he wasn’t the better fighter that day. Even after being ridiculed, even by his opponents, he never stooped low enough to take away for what he agreed to.
Thank you for properly setting up the Masvidal knee. It happened in 6 seconds but there was a lifetime of effort behind it, and it made a journeyman a star in front of everyone. It's as good as it gets. Among the greatest strikes in UFC history
I do love me some street Jesus. And if you don't think a street fighter has odd strikes I dunno what to tell ya. MAYBE don't go for a double leg takedown telegraphed to heck and back either. Askren is one of the best, and I'm glad he's got to relax and stay at home. He seems like a genuinely good guy.
Oh come on. A flying knee does not take a lifetime of training or effort. He thought he'd try and pull off a cheeky stunt and caught him off guard. I for one thought fk all of it.

One knee to the face and people forget his wrestling career, and his time Bellator? I never got all the hate he received.
The Askren wrestling academy is churning out national and international champions. He has plenty to be proud of and his work is going to sustain the athletic landscape for future generations.
its ok to be wrong about something that doesnt change your life at all. wrestling and MMA in America at least are two peas in a pod. ATT built Bo Nickal his own gym so they could have a relationship with Penn State
Not gonna lie from a wrestlers pov I felt bad for Askren and wanted the best for him in the ufc. Back when I started wrestling in 7th grade my wrestling coach would show us Ben Askren’s old matches from high school and NCAA and a few of his MMA fights and that planted the seed for my style when I first started. I would always look for scrambles in situations, cheap tilts and eventually got so good at awareness and body control I started doing what we call “Funk & Junk” which was heavily inspired by Askren at a very fast pace in matches. Thinking back to it all now from middle school-college all my success in wrestling was all thanks to him his style of wrestling inspired me so much and it led me through a great wrestling career.

Unforunately life isn't fair and we often don't dictate our own legacy. If Ben Askren hadn't gone in so low maybe it might've changed the outcome of both. There was so much trash talking whoever wont that fight's career was over. One thing is for sure Askren was right Masvidal didn't care about Lawler's legacy. The Askren fight didn't hurt it.
I would love to see something about how he was an undefeated world champion beating killers at Bellator and ONE FC for like 20 years then retiring undefeated.
Honestly I always thought it was sad that the ufc really had the audacity to trade Demetrius Johnson for this clown, but I didn’t realize that he was as accomplished of a fighter as he was in other promotions that ultimately led to the trade. That’s impressive to go to the Olympics then become a multi promotion champ.
That arm going down was a sure sign of Lawler being out. You couldn't explain it either way. If Herb hadn't stopped it, how would that have ended? Masvidal got lucky, and would have lost had he not landed that knee. Askren's run in the UFC was unfortunate. It shouldn't define his life or career. He's still awesome.
Amazing commentary at the end 10/10 video. I too thought Askren was a joke but look at what he achieved and what he has, I realise I was so wrong. I respect Askren now, life is bigger than always chasing a specific goal.

GSP was too good for Askren. Love Askren, but that's my opinion. His wrestling was good enough to prevent the takedowns or get back to his feet. And on the feet wasn't even a fair fight.

Hey Ben.

It seems deplorable and completely pathetic and unacceptable to me to do a sport for 10+ years and not practice like half of it =)))
Askren is the most overrated fighter in History and your comment is trash, he also wiped his arse with his name and legacy for 500k when he accepted the Paul fight, only a fool would have not seen the outcome considering Ben's childish, laughable and sad striking.

All my years bein choked and ive never seen someone defend a choke by goin limp, tough luck for robbie 🤷🏾♂️
Going limp is not a good defense

@@JaemanEdwardsyou’re hating on him under every comment, why are you so obsessed with ben askren?
@@anon2427 You're the one who's obsessed with him. White knighting for ole "Hands of Death" How embarrassing. Who's your other fave ? Bilal ? 😂
@@JaemanEdwards where did I white knight for him? Bellend Muhammed is boring af and somewhat cringey as well
Here In Wisconsin, Ben teaches AWA, which is an elite wrestling club for kids at any age. I have only been taught by him once with some other kids too. Every once in a while, I'll see him at local tournaments. Currently, I prefer Nazars Wrestling Acadamy, but in the end, being able to see and embrace with Ben Askren is a cool experience.
This might be one of the best videos you have made and I have a lot more respect for Ben askren after this. Thank you for homage to his career 🙏
Superb documentary as always, I think you did Ben a great service here and its a shame more people don't know the full story.
Many thanks!
No matter what ppl will say lets not forget this man got up there and did what 99% of man only ""think"" they can do to those opponents . and did won many of his fights.
“Karate doesn’t work on me” is such a wildly outrageous thing to say
Name 1 karate fighter who beat him? We will wait...
I didn't understand this man for years.
Thanks for this documentary, he's so much cooler than I figured!
Wow ... I'm not a UFC fan but these videos are great. It really shows you how a good host can make anything interesting.
Thanks for watching my friend I really appreciate it
It's never too late to start watching
I hope Ben sees this video.. he really deserves to know many of the hardcore fans know what he was in his prime
He seen it I showed it to him after the video of Robbie and jake pounding his head thanks chap.
@@retro2485it never ceases to amaze me how many ppl are ruthless in mocking with mma fighters.. the guts and self confidence it takes to get into the octagon and fight in front of a crowd and god knows how many at home is unfathomable to me.. when they get knocked out to a cheering crowd they have to stand up and take it like a professional and its ALL on them.. not a team sport like soccer where u share the loss with other ppl.. I'm not saying they arent fair game for criticism but i just dont get how u can not appreciate how much they put on the line
@@heybri I understand where you coming from lad. I was just shit talking ben is definitely that dude he went undefeated in 2 organizations. Also he was out of his prime with a lot of bad injuries when he made it to the ufc. I bet on him to win against Jorge 200 dollars against my friend so I’m still salty about it😅
@retro2485 ohh see now u got me.feeling bad lol.. your good buddy. If I bet on ben in that fight I'd be salty still too lol..
Specialists like he was, are so fun. A one-trick that no one could stop in his prime. People HAD to get better at what he was elite, in order to counter him. No one really beat him grappling.
He is a real fighter and a real champ. Always enjoyed his attitude. Legend
One of my favorite fighters. This man was a true fighter
Quoting from Hermes Trismegistos in a fight video is insane my man. This was poetry, subed instantly. Hats off
one thing i admire about him is that he always made weight and showed up to his fights no matter what. There are too many people always missing weight or dropping out of fights and even the champions are guilty of this.
Askren is tough as shit. Watching that Lawler fight live I legit thought Ben was dead when he got slammed on his head and neck. Then the ground and pound after was ferocious. Fucking nutty toughness
To take full bloodied shots from a monster puncher like robbie lawler then to submit him is quite a thing. Those shots were brutal.
This was a great vid. I look at Ben completely differently
Wow, what a great video. Honestly one of the best UA-camr made Documentaries I have seen
This was fantastic.
Ben Askrin is a great human being and I'm glad you took the time to showcase it.
#cope.... he was a failure ... he won on some b rate program fighting soup cans.... or excuse me "Pulling the Narmagamedof" laying on soup cans with an embarrassing name caliber on his fight lineage over time. He sucks.
@@JaneDoe-sv1mk A good way of gutting all of your credibility is starting a comment with "#cope" you're a joke lol
It's a shame Ben didn't a glorious moment in his last fight so that people's last memory, of this objectively very effective and accomplished mma fighter, wasn't him eating knee cap. I'm glad he's the happy go lucky type of guy, so that he's not a tragic story now... just seems to be a happy wrestling coach getting on with his life, which is the epitome of non-failure in itself; to be happy when your career is over.
The Askren fight didn't hurt it.
very well done videos, editing, music, narration. congrats
Didnt think i’d be able to sit through this video 45 mins when starting it, but i did. Great video, production, and narration.
I would love to see something about how he was an undefeated world champion beating killers at Bellator and ONE FC for like 20 years then retiring undefeated.
(I have been saying this ^ for a years). Thank you, You're a gentleman and a scholar.
Appreciate you my man, you know it was my duty to do it!
@@GalactusOGGet off your knees already.
This is my second video from
This channel and I’m quite impressed with the quality, *new sub*
I just watched your Rousey video before this one, and the way Ben and Ronda respond after fights is polar opposites lol
Men and Women are polar opposites basically
Amazing commentary at the end 10/10 video. I too thought Askren was a joke but look at what he achieved and what he has, I realise I was so wrong. I respect Askren now, life is bigger than always chasing a specific goal.
Prime Ben would have dominated UFC. What happened to him is exactly what happens to every legend that comes back and tries to fight the best guys. Even George only came back to fight a 1 eyed old man then ran away gain. He knew what the guys would do to him now.
GSP was too good for Askren. Love Askren, but that's my opinion. His wrestling was good enough to prevent the takedowns or get back to his feet. And on the feet wasn't even a fair fight.
Khabib would have been a more interesting fight, especially early on when khabib's standup wasn't as good as it became.
@@salvadorpalma8173 George got submitted and KOd in his Prime years then retired after getting battered by Johnny Hendrix.
@@GalactusOG😂 Ben Askren wouldn't have dominated shit. There's a reason why all the best fighters are in the UFC. The standard at One Championship and Bellator is that bad. He was your classic Chael Sonnen. Big Mouth wrestler who couldn't really fight.
@@JaemanEdwards UFC fighters get smoked all the time by fighters from other promotions. Since the beginning to this day.
@@GalactusOG, 😂😂😂
I don't consider him a failure at all. He did well in his career. Like most fighters, he met his match. He had a great career.
thats the first long form video ive ever watched where i didnt zone out, didnt check the time, didnt check how far i was, just completely engaged. bro you have a real talent for this. incredible job on the video
Ben had an amazing overall career. He was an absolutely elite & accomplished wrestler in his prime.
LOL
Thank you for this video. Your quality of work and research is perfect. A lot of people don’t know but Ben is a legend in Missouri where he wrestled. I really wish people understood his career better. It makes me happy knowing that you undoubtedly changed someone’s perspective on Ben Askren.
People hate wrestlers. Nothing but crotch sniffers who can't really fight.
I appreciate that! Thank you so much 🙏
Dope documentary, askren was boring af but he was tough and kept his word
Soon as I seen he was an Olympic caliber wrestler I immediately changed my opinion of Askren. Good for him
Well done!!! Great video!!! You have a new fan! Excellent, excellent job!!
When he lost to Masividal, everyone trashed Askren. It made it seem that Askren was a major jerk and Masividal was some hero and a cool guy. Years, later, interviews, actions in real life, the exact opposite is true.
What a character and what an inspiration Ben Askren is, he truly has a beautiful mind. Thank you Mixed Martial Academic for your excellent work here.
Ben’s always ben one of my favorite fighters, a lot of people called him boring but he became world class with pretty much just folk style wrestling, and took fairly little damage doin it
Last 5 fights I think he took 1 punch in ONE, I believe that is the stat someone correct me if I’m wrong
@@MixedMartialAcademic people can call him boring all they want but there’s a reason guys like him and maia have all their braincells 🤷🏾♂️
@@justincarter1217crotch sniffer spotted. People hate wrestlers.

People like you help to remind us of what was it really was all about for Ben. For what it's worth Ben help to bring a lot more eyes to the sport. In a pro wrestling point of view, Ben put Jorge over. Unintentionally speaking. But he was fun to watch while he was in the UFC. I don't think less of him. He's a champion. Can't take that away.
I loved this video.
You did such a great job. I learned so much about Ben Askren, and now have a deep respect for his character.
I hope that he doesn't take any more fights with scumbag UA-camrs.
I hope that he just enjoys his life, with his wife and children. Those are the treasures that matter in life.
There have been many, so called champs in MMA who are horrible human beings. I'd say that Ben might just be the winner after all.
