  • Many Protestants can't understand how Catholics believe what they believe about Mary. Over and over again, the Marian beliefs taught in Roman Catholicism are challenged and ridiculed as "unbiblical" "idolatrous", and "heretical". How do converts overcome these objections? In this video, former Protestant Pastor Keith Nester explains how he overcame his problems with what Catholics believe about Mary. you can remain protestant . But honor Mary. because JESUS like when we honor his "chosen one" . Just like we honor a pastor, priest, but even more for her mother, she has suffered alot during the live of JESUS, people was mocking JESUS saying he is a son of carpenter denied that he is the Messiah, same with her mother. There is some books revealing the details of the HOLY FAMILY. Look it up. But also remember as human , we will never know the full "thruth" even PAUL said "when once prophetise once prophetise partially".

My grandmother introduced me to Mama Mary when I was around 10.Every month of May we do the rosary everyday with other kids in the small chapel until I was the one teaching kids to pray it.I dont understand things yet at those times but looking back now all I can say is that She brought me to love Jesus more,I learned to also make a diary dedicated to God telling Him about what my day was and how I feel.My life wasnt that easy nor too hard but those years looking back I was blessed with a good family despite financial struggles, opportunities coming to me without noticing it and with that I can say is she never really take away that right to our Lord.Growing up I forgot all about the rosary due to lifes constant pressures yet I always carry one with me wherever I go.It is like my protection and my guide. In this dark times of my life it came to my mind about the rosary,I carry it with me yet never say it for so many years nor write to the Lord like I use to before.I committed so many sins that it feels like He dont deserve a daughter like me anymore but He loves me and I know He only wants me to be the person He wants me to be.So now I wanted to start praying the rosary again hoping to change my life and follow His will.Anything impossible to us is possible to Him.

Jesus called some people "brothers" who accompanied Mary which doesn't have to mean they were literally His brothers. They might have been cousins or simply members of the same community. Anyway, Jesus called every believer a brother. Protestants have a tendency to jump into conclusions without reading deeper into verses, which they call overinterpretation and heresy.

The Blessed Mother was a big prt of my first believing the Church’s teachings to be true. First learning she is the new Eve, a thought that never occurred to me, but once presented, was so natural and necessary it made me wonder how I had never yhought of it before. I then began to learn all I could, and the more I learned, the more sure I was of how good and right it was to have a Mother in her. Praying the Rosary daily transformed my life so very much, erasing all fear of demons and drawinf me closer to closer to Jesus, through His Mother. How awesome and mighty is our God, to do so much through so humble a person.

I am a Catholic Christian believer, I spent most of my Christian life even as a Catholic having a very powerful relationship with Jesus but not really giving Mary any emotional time except for the odd prayer I would offer her.
Then one day it hit me, Woman behold thy son, son behold thy mother, I wrote this just as Kevin spoke about it.
This is very powerful, Jesus tells his beloved disciple John to take his mother to be his mother.
When I realised this I wept and thanked Jesus Christ for giving me his own beloved mother to me and all of us.
Mary is very powerful in removing sin from our lives and trust me I should know.
Thank you Jesus for your own mother to becoming John’s mother which in turn Mary became my mother also.
Thanks Keith for your videos and your sharing of your testimony of our blessed mother Mary.

Thank you for this beautiful sharing on the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. In some discussions with protestants I realised that their problem is rather affectiv and ideological, not really rational: they usually ask you: where is that in the Bible? And if you show it to them, usually they do not accept it, they quote another biblical text which according to them is opposed to that. It is like what St. Paul says about the jews, whose eyes are blinded by a veil, which does not allow them to recognise Jesus in the prophets. Thus the Jews will quote many texts of the OT to counter the divinity of Jesus Christ. As for me, which most helped me regarding to Mary is the parallelism Adam/Jesus, Eve/Mary. If we are able to perceive Mary as the New Eve in the Bible, besides Jesus, the New Adam, all the marian dogmas will make sense. And we may perceive that when Jesus call her Woman in Cana and at the Cross; but still, we will only perceive it when we allow the Holy Spirit to take away the veil of incredulity from our interior eyes. If we do not, some times He blazes before our eyes and "knocks" us down to earth, as He did to St. Paul (through Jesus) and to Alfonse of Ratisbone (through Mary).

I was just confirmed a Catholic yesterday (Pentecost Sunday 2023). The Church accepted my Protestant baptism, which happened almost 49 years ago when I was a kid. I love God's Word, and have been studying Scripture since I could read...but I was never exposed to many of the teachings of the Church Fathers (though I did know some things about Church history, and I did read some of St. Augustine as a Protestant). Even as a Protestant, I was thinking about the Lord's redeeming blood, and it occurred to me that, in a way, Mary's blood was also shed on the cross. Didn't a sword pierce her heart, as well, as Simeon had prophesied? Only a few people followed Jesus all the way to the foot of the cross, and His mother was one of them. She shared in His sufferings in a way that no one else can even imagine. So, I am not surprised that she is so highly honored in the Catholic faith. It is just to do so.

As someone who has one foot in the Protestant world and the other one in exploring Catholicism, your content is so encouraging and helpful. I don't have any close relationships with Catholics to really be on this journey with me. I prayed my first rosary on Monday with a little help from a pamphlet and your rosary stream. I've been reading and listening to content about Mary for months. I still have mixed feelings about it all. But I did honestly admit to myself this week that I want it all to be true. At that point, I felt like maybe I should get out of my books and my head, so to speak, and try a more tangible, personal approach. Anyhow, I didn't mean to write an essay lol. Just wanted to express thanks.

Here's why Mary had to be sinless. Luke 1:28 28 "And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women." The KJV says, "Highly Favored" instead of "Full of Grace" Jerome translated Kecharitomene in the Vulgate as "Gratia Plena". which translates as "Full of Grace". Here's what dr. Bob Sungenis a Catholic apologist wrote about the KJV translation of Luke 1:28. "It was the Protestant translations that began to change the traditional translation. Whereas the Douay-Rheims had “hail, full of grace,” the KJV, which was modeled after the Douay-Rheims but came eight years after the first Douay translation, changed the words to “hail, highly favored one,” to eliminate even the implication that Mary was immaculately conceived.". This is why I will never read a Protestant Bible. They use "Highly favored one" instead of "Full of grace" to circumvent the Immaculate Conception. They don't make their theology conform to Scripture, they make Scripture conform to their theology.
Most Protestants hold to the notion that Mary was a sinner. They have a serious logical problem with that notion. If Mary not only was a sinner but more specifically a mortal sinner while Jesus was in her womb and there is no reason to assume that she didn't sin while Jesus was in her womb based on their own reasoning. When we sin we are slaves to Satan. If Mary sinned while Jesus was in her womb that would have meant that Jesus had the blood of a slave of Satan coursing through His veins. If Mary mortally sinned while Jesus was in her womb which is also a reasonable assumption based on Protestant thought Mary would have not only been cut off from God's Grace which would have contradicted Gabriel's greeting to her "Kecharitomene" but she would have been an enemy of God. Even with the bad KJV translation of "Highly favored one" she would have not been highly favored as she now was an enemy of God due to committing a "Sin that leads to death" while she had God himself in her womb. This alone would have rendered Gabriel's greeting to her at best schizophrenic and at worse a lie. This is the natural implication of calling Mary a sinner. She had no exemption based on Protestant thought while Jesus was in her womb. Now if Mary committed a sin that leads to death otherwise known as a mortal sin and died before Jesus died on the Cross for her, He would have had to sentence his own mother to hell for all eternity. This is the logical conclusion of Protestant thought.
When we mortally sin which is "sin that leads to death" 1 John 5:16. We are spiritually dead. We are cut of from God's grace and are now enemies of God deserving of eternal hell for each and every mortal sin committed. without the Sacrament of Reconciliation that's exactly where we are headed. If Protestant's think they have a way out of post Baptismal mortal sin by believing that simply confessing to Jesus directly means the guilt of the sin that leads to death is removed because Jesus remitted all sin for all time through the cross and can continue sinning based on that erroneous assumption deceive themselves. They are absolutely on the hook for each and every mortal sin committed. Hebrews 10:25-28 "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God." This is one of many, many reasons that I would never be a Protestant. They have no way of removing the punishment due tor post Baptismal mortal sin. They will have to stand before God almighty and face the full consequences for each and every mortal sin committed. I am not perfect enough to be a Protestant. I need the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

One other thing which has convinced me that Catholicism is true... is this profound sense of RATIONALITY to it all. Reason, Truth, Love, Peace, Joy, Holiness... all of these things (which are really one thing, the spirit of God) when they come.... they are RATIONAL. Just like when Christ cured the possessed man in the graveyard. When the people came to see what had happened, they found Christ sitting with the man who formerly was completely out of his mind, now sitting in his completely right and RATIONAL mind.
When I understood the Holy Mother, it was REASON (i.e. God's spirit) which led me here. It's just a much higher form of Reason than I can describe with words.

Everyone’s stories bring me to tears because I experienced my own call back. Suffice it to say - I asked for help and the help were little nudges. I can’t recall if a Hail Mary was a trigger early on but I do know as soon as I began to pray the Hail Mary that the pill did get stronger. And as I begged for guidance and forgiveness the pull back to Mass and making my first confession and truly taking part in the holy Eucharist and I knew I was home. Now the adult confirmation process starts.

The Apostolic Church presented a straightforward, realistic, and very human picture of Mary. Saintly, but not extraordinarily so, when compared to those having walked alongside Jesus throughout His ministry.
In John, Mary is mentioned in the inglorious request she made of Jesus at a wedding. His brothers clearly disbelieve Him. And Jesus tells John that she may be his responsibility at the darkest of times, during and following His crucifixion. Hence, the spiritual sword Jesus had explicitly mentioned bringing into the world through His ministry had divided even His own household.
For example, in Matthew 10:34-36 we read Jesus saying: "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person's enemies will be those of his own household."
Thus, as a new spiritual family called the Church was emerging amidst such conflicts, Jesus compassionately spoke to an immediate concern. However, from the beginning, Mary held and would have no special status or role....
Matthew 12:46-50: "While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”
Luke 11:27-28: "As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and blessed are the breasts that nursed You. But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
Acts 1:12-14: "Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James. They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers."
Notice that in the above list of earliest Disciples, Mary was mentioned only after the women who regularly followed Jesus and just before His previously unbelieving brothers.
Therefore, it doesn't appear as though Mary was ever considered or presented as an extraordinary role model or guide when compared to any of Jesus's closest followers. Nor does she appear otherwise in writings from the earliest Fathers of the Church.
Nevertheless, if anyone can provide explicit Scriptural statements demonstrating the contrary position, please do so. As someone having been on a long spiritual journey, I am committed to finding Truth. And, apart from such revelation, all pertinent evidence suggests that worldly sentiment led to abstract eisegesis and over reaching in theological discourse. From these forces a grand and glossy but ultimately unwarranted and undesirable tradition has arisen within Christ's Holy Church.
Indeed, the first demon Jesus ever encountered was in a synagogue. That is, amidst the devout liturgical gatherings of God's own people. And the "Divine Mother" and "Queen of Heaven" motifs were commonplace in demonic ancient religion, including within Biblically and theologically compromised Israel itself (Jer. 44).
Moreover, prior to medieval Christian claims in regards to the Apostles, the Pharisees had already developed dogma based an alleged oral tradition having passed down alongside Scripture from Moses. A principle condemned by none other than Jesus: "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition!"
Hence, all such historical realities clearly and intentionally warn us of the very subtle, yet powerful, ways in which "doctrines of demons" have been and can be introduced as if delivered by a Moses or the Apostles themselves.
Finally, let's hear from recognized authorities on the matter of Scripture vs developing Church Traditions in matters of theology....
Clement of Alexandria (d. ca. 216) said, “But those who are ready to toil in the most excellent pursuits, will not desist from the search after truth, till they get the information from the Scriptures themselves” (Stromata 7:16).
Hippolytus of Rome (d. 235) said, “There is, brethren, one God, the knowledge of whom we gain from the Holy Scriptures and no other source” (Against the Heresy of One Noetus 9).
St. Athanasius (d. 375) said, “The Holy Scriptures, given by inspiration of God, are of themselves sufficient toward the discovery of truth. (Orat. adv. Gent., ad cap.) “The holy Scripture is of all things most sufficient for us” (To the Bishops of Egypt 1:4)." "The Catholic Christians will neither speak nor endure to hear anything in religion that is a stranger to Scripture; it being an evil heart of immodesty to speak those things which are not written,” (Exhort. ad Monachas). “Vainly then do they run about with the pretext that they have demanded Councils for the faith’s sake; for divine Scripture is sufficient above all things; but if a Council be needed on the point, there are the proceedings of the Fathers, for the Nicene Bishops did not neglect this matter, but stated the doctrine so exactly, that persons reading their words honestly, cannot but be reminded by them of the religion towards Christ announced in divine Scripture.” (De Synodis, 6).
St. Cyril of Jerusalem (d. 386) said, "We ought not to deliver even the most casual remark without the Holy Scriptures: nor be drawn aside by mere probabilities and the artifices of argument. Do not then believe me because I tell thee these things, unless thou receive from the Holy Scriptures the proof of what is set forth: for this salvation, which is of our faith, is not by ingenious reasonings, but by proof from the Holy Scriptures...Let us then speak nothing concerning the Holy Ghost but what is written; and if anything be not written, let us not busy ourselves about it. The Holy Ghost Himself spoke the Scriptures; He has also spoken concerning Himself as much as He pleased, or as much as we could receive. Be those things therefore spoken, which He has said; for whatsoever He has not said, we dare not say" (Catechetical Lectures, 4.17ff).
St. Gregory of Nyssa (d. 394) said, "What then is our reply? We do not think that it is right to make their prevailing custom the law and rule of sound doctrine. For if custom is to avail for proof of soundness, we too, surely, may advance our prevailing custom; and if they reject this, we are surely not bound to follow theirs. Let the inspired Scripture, then, be our umpire, and the vote of truth will surely be given to those whose dogmas are found to agree with the Divine words (Dogmatic Treatises, Book 12. On the Trinity, To Eustathius).
St. Ambrose (d. 396) said, “How can we use those things which we do not find in the Holy Scriptures?” (Ambr. Offic., 1:23).
St. Augustine (d. 430) said, "For the reasonings of any men whatsoever, even though they be [true Christians], and of high reputation, are not to be treated by us in the same way as the canonical Scriptures are treated. We are at liberty, without doing any violence to the respect which these men deserve, to condemn and reject anything in their writings, if perchance we shall find that they have entertained opinions differing from that which others or we ourselves have, by the divine help, discovered to be the truth. I deal thus with the writings of others, and I wish my intelligent readers to deal thus with mine (Letters, 148.15).

The Holy Mother Mary is how I came to Catholicism. I have NO problem with her.
I am in RCIA, and now that the wine is being offered again and for the first time I am exposed to seeing it offered - and it’s not served in individual cups (like I was used to) and I do not see myself drinking from a cup shared by others.
Not sure what to do with these feelings now.

Protestants forget that the Bible also says “there is more than is written here” so axiomatically that means NOT everything can be gleaned about Gods word by the Bible ALONE. A simple verse that means the 600,000 words of the KJV Protestant Bible, the 800,000 words of the Catholic Bible and the 1,000,000 words of the Orthodox Bibles still do NOT encompass it all. So both Protestants AND Muslims looking to find fault with certain things because they don’t exist in a specific phrasing doesn’t mean it is wrong …”there is more than is written here”

I think I would describe myself as conservative Lutheran. I believe that Christians should have reverence for Mary. After all, she was blessed to give birth to Christ, and had to suffer through His death. But calling her "mother of God" is never going to sit well with me. Who came first? God or Mary?
Should we respect Mary and revere her as a blessed woman who was given the immaculate conception? Absolutely. Should we contemplate her life and sacrifices just as we contemplate the life and sacrifices of Jesus? Absolutely. Should we pray to a dead human being and call them the mother of God? Now I'm not in agreement.

The protestants call out Catholics for insisting that salvation is achieved with faith and works.
They argue that faith alone is sufficient and cite Ephesians 2:8-10.
If you read the whole chapter, or even the whole bible, there is no mention of the words "faith ALONE" or "grace Alone". The protestants keep adding the word alone to fit their narrative.
In the case of the rosary, its a different deceit they use- they ignore the the word 'vain'.
The scripture reads "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions,"
"Hail Mary..Full of grace.." were the words coming out of the angel Gabriel, they're not vain (even if the protestants think so).
"Our Father in heaven..." Jesus Himself taught those words- they're not vain (even if the protestants think so).
"Glory be to the Father...to the Son, to the Holy Spirit..."they're not vain (even if the protestants think so).

Mary is the best friend Jesus ever had: she brought Him into the world and stuck with Him throughout His life to the bitter end and beyond. She isn't Divinity. Some folks might think that she is-the way some folks throughout the years seem to put her on a pedestal-but she's only the best of the best of of Jesus' followers. That's why we Catholics honor her: she didn't have Original Sin. She was a virgin and agreed to conceive and give birth to Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit (a tremendous mystery) and she was taken to heaven "after her earthly life was finished." Not by her own power, but by the Blessed Trinity's. Our Catholic Church honors her like no other Saint.

Protestants think Mary should be recognized just at Christmas but she should be recognized everyday. She deserves all love respect and honor. The best answer against Sola Scriptura is "Where in the bible does it say what books belong in the bible"?

    • @dodleymortune4312
      @dodleymortune4312 Місяць тому +5

The main idea of sola scriptura is not that no tradition is allowed, it is that no tradition can go against an explicit teaching of the Bible, because the written word is the most sure testimony handed down by the apostles. Therefore, everything should be tester by the scriptures. Even apostle Paul himself called the berean noble because they were searching in the scriptures if what he said to them is true.
You can have tradition, but do not make it at the same level than the word of God. This is a simple logic doctrine that the Bible tell itself. Do not had to the word or remove to the word of God.

    • @ironnick1356
      @ironnick1356 23 дні тому +1

Firstly, that’s not an answer, it’s a question.
Second, the question defies logic; the authors of the stories that were gathered together to create “the bible”, had no idea that they were going to made into that single book we have and enjoy today.
Lastly, if they all actually knew that one day, thousands of years from their time, that they’d eventually have their writings considered for a canon of official books, they would ALL have said that theirs should be added.

All of the disciples of Jesus ran away from Him during His Passion, but there was one disciple that didn’t abandon Him - the disciple John. But in this scene John was not alone in that journey, in fact he could have not done it by himself being present at the foot of the cross. He was with our Blessed Mother. If you look at the accounts in the garden, when all the disciples ran away, John too ran away, but he went straight to the Blessed Mother. and because of her, he was able to see Jesus and stayed close to him in His passion, all the way to the crucifixion. Why? Because he stayed close to our Blessed Mother! The other disciples ran away - they all went on their way, but John.
There were two people that took Mary into their own home. First was of course Saint Joseph, the other was Saint John. But notice in the first scene, the Angel told Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary into his own home. Likewise with John, where he took Mary into his own home. If the Angel told Saint Joseph “not to be afraid” to take Mary into his own home, then why couldn’t we do the same????? If Jesus, the 2nd Person of the Blessed Trinity, submitted Himself to the care of Mary, completely dependent on Her for 9 months in her womb, and then for the next 30 years became obedient to her, why can’t we? Our Blessed Lord is the epitome of that humility.... and we are only imitating Jesus as Saint Louis De Montfort said in his book True Devotion to Mary.

When you made this video I was agnostic. But in the summer of 2020 (when I was 41 years old) a close friend friend from high school took his life. I hadn’t seen him in maybe 18 years, but it broke my heart. It was, in short, absolutely devastating. After a few weeks of immense hurt, I literally woke-up one morning, and Mary was just “there”, in my mind. I had no visions of her, no verbal messages... but she was just there, every moment, for months. I am a mother and my two little boys at the time were 4 and 1 - I started to “feel” everything from Jesus’ life from Mary’s perspective. My heart just kept breaking and hurting for her. Every day I cried. I eventually met with a Deacon at our local Catholic Church, he assured me that “everything Mary does is to bring you to her son”. My sons were Baptized a month after this all started and I signed up for RCIA. About three months after Mary came to me (converted me!), I woke up one morning (again, it was this suddenly) - and Our Blessed Mother has succeeded to bring me to the feet of her son on the cross. I love our Blessed Mother so much - without her I don’t know if I ever would have given my life to Jesus. And Jesus has changed me in just about every way. The Archangel Gabriel said it: “Hail, full of grace”.

Hi Keith, I, too, converted to Catholicism this past April 2019 after being a protestant for 15+ years. Mary was a big obstacle for me as well until I started doing my research and reading the bible in its historical context - which is SO important because if we look at scripture through the lens of that time, we will understand that back in that time, the queens of the kingdoms were not the wives of the kings, the queens were the mothers of the kings. Jesus is the King of Kings - which makes Mary our blessed Mother and - yes- our Heavenly Queen 🤗❤
Also, in that time, when the husband died, the responsibility to care for the mother would be passed onto the oldest son. If the oldest son died, the responsibility would then pass on to the 2nd oldest son and so on. It would have been unheard of and even a disgrace to give one's own mother away to someone else if she had another son who could care for her.
At the time of Jesus' death, St. Joseph had already passed, and since our blessed Mother had no other children, Jesus tells us all "Behold your mother." Jesus didn't say "John" he said "to the disciple he loved." Jesus loves all of his disciples. Therefore, who should look upon Mary as his mother? All of us who are beloved disciples of Christ.
Keep up the great work, Keith! Praying for you!

In the monarchy of King David, as well as in other ancient kingdoms of the Near East, the mother of the ruling king held an important office in the royal court and played a key part in the process of dynastic succession. In fact, the king’s mother ruled as queen, not his wife. The great pre-eminence of the king’s mother may seem odd from our modern Western perspective, in which we think of a queen as being the wife of a king. However, recall that most ancient Near-Eastern kings practiced polygamy. King Solomon had seven hundred wives (1 Kgs. 11:3)-imagine the chaos in the royal court if all seven hundred were awarded the queenship! But since each king had only one mother, one can see the practical wisdom in bestowing the queenship upon her.
A number of Old Testament passages reflect the important role of the queen mother in the Davidic kingdom. For example, almost every time the narrative of 1 and 2 Kings introduces a new monarch in Judah, it mentions the king’s mother as well, showing the mother’s intimate involvement in her royal son’s reign. Similarly, the queen mother is listed among the members of the royal court whom king Jehoiachin surrendered to the king of Babylon in 2 Kings 24:12.
Her royal office is also described by the prophet Jeremiah, who tells how the queen mother possessed a throne and a crown, symbolic of her position of authority in the kingdom: "Say to the king and the queen mother: ‘Take a lowly seat, for your beautiful crown has come down from your head. . . . Lift up your eyes and see those who come from the north. Where is the flock that was given you, your beautiful flock?’” (Jer. 13:18, 20). It is significant that God directed this oracle about the upcoming fall of Judah to both the king and his mother. Addressing both king and queen mother, Jeremiah portrays her as sharing in her son’s rule over the kingdom.
Probably the clearest example of the queen mother’s role is that of Bathsheba, wife of David and mother of Solomon. Scholars have noted the excellence of Bathsheba’s position in the kingdom once she became queen mother during Solomon’s rule. Compare the humble attitude of Bathsheba as spouse of King David (1 Kgs. 1:16-17, 31) with her majestic dignity as mother of the next king, Solomon (1 Kgs. 2:19-20). As spouse of the king, Bathsheba bows with her face to the ground and does obeisance to her husband, David, upon entering his royal chamber. In striking contrast, after her son Solomon assumed the throne and she became queen mother, Bathsheba receives a glorious reception upon meeting with her royal son: So Bathsheba went to King Solomon, to speak to him on behalf of Adonijah. And the king rose to meet her, and bowed down to her; then he sat on his throne and had a seat brought for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right. Then she said, ‘I have one small request to make of you; do not refuse me.’ And the king said to her, ‘Make your request, my mother; for I will not refuse you’” (1 Kgs. 2:19-20).
This account reveals the sovereign prerogatives of the queen mother. Note how the king rises and bows as she enters. Bathsheba’s seat at the king’s right hand has the greatest significance. In the Bible, the right hand is the place of ultimate honor. This is seen in particular in the messianic Psalm 110 (“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool”). In fact, many New Testament passages refer to the right-hand imagery of Psalm 110 to show Christ’s divinity and his reign with the Father over the whole universe (e.g., Hebrews 1:13). Thus, the queen mother sitting at the king’s right hand symbolizes her sharing in the king’s royal authority and illustrates how she holds the most important position in the kingdom, second only to the king, etc.

This passage regarding Bathsheba also shows how the queen mother served as an advocate for the people, carrying petitions to the king. In 1 Kings 2:17, Adonijah asks Bathsheba to take a petition for him to King Solomon. He says to her: “Pray ask King Solomon-he will not refuse you-to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife” (1 Kgs. 2:17). It is clear that Adonijah recognizes the queen mother’s position of influence over the king, so he confidently turns to Bathsheba as an intercessor for his request.
A few Old Testament prophecies incorporate the queen mother tradition when telling of the future Messiah. One example is Isaiah 7:14, which originated during a time of dynastic crisis in Judah when Syria and Israel were threatening Jerusalem and plotting to overthrow King Ahaz. God offers Ahaz a sign that the kingdom will continue: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel” (Isa. 7:13-14).
On one level, this passage points to the next king (Hezekiah) as a pledge that the Davidic dynasty will continue despite the threats of invading armies. At the same time, the royal son who is to be named “Emmanuel” points to the future messianic king (cf., Isa. 9:6-7, 11:1-2). This is why the New Testament says Jesus fulfills this prophecy from Isaiah (Matt. 1:23).
For our purposes we should note how this prophecy links the mother to her royal son. Since the oracle is addressed specifically to the Davidic household and concerns the continuation of the dynasty, the young woman bearing forth the royal son would be understood as a queen mother. This has implications for our understanding of Mary. Since the mother of the king always ruled as queen mother, we should expect to find the mother of the messianic king playing the role of the true queen mother in the everlasting Kingdom of God.
With this Old Testament background, we can now more clearly see how the New Testament portrays Mary in light of the queen mother tradition.
The Gospel of Matthew has often been called the “Gospel of the Kingdom.” Matthew emphasizes that Jesus is “the Son of David,” who is the true King of the Jews establishing the “Kingdom of Kingdom of Heaven.” With all this kingly imagery, it should not be surprising to find queen mother themes as well.
Right away, Matthew shows explicitly how the infant Jesus is the “Emmanuel” child as prophesied in Isaiah 7:14 (Matt. 1:23). As we saw above, this prophecy links the royal messianic child with his queen mother. Further, Matthew singles out the intimate relationship between the mother and her royal son by using the phrase “the child and his mother” five times in the first two chapters, recalling the close association between queen mother and royal son as described in the Books of Kings. Just as the queen mother was constantly mentioned alongside the Judean kings in 1 and 2 Kings, so Mary is frequently mentioned alongside her royal son, Jesus, in Matthew’s infancy narrative (Matt. 1:18; 2:11, 13, 14, 20, 21).
We find Mary portrayed against the background of Davidic kingdom motifs in Luke’s Gospel as well, especially in his accounts of the Annunciation and Visitation. First, the angel Gabriel is said to appear to a virgin betrothed to a man “of the house of David” (1:27). Then the angel tells Mary, “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called Son of the most high.

      Continued...part 3.
and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:31-33).
Hear the strong Davidic overtones describing Mary and her royal son: a woman from the house of David giving birth to a son who will be the new king whose reign will never end. With echoes from the queen mother tradition of the Davidic kingdom and the mother-son prophecy of Isaiah 7:14, we can conclude that Mary is being given the vocation of queen mother.
Mary’s royal office is made even more explicit in Luke’s account of the Visitation. Elizabeth greets Mary with the title “the mother of my Lord” (Luke 1:43). This title is charged with great queenly significance. In the royal court language of the ancient NearEast, the title “Mother of my Lord” was used to address the queen mother of the reigning king (who himself was addressed as “my Lord”; cf., 2 Sam. 24:21). Thus with this title Elizabeth is recognizing the great dignity of Mary’s role as the royal mother of the king, Jesus.
Finally, Mary’s queenship can be seen in the great vision described in Revelation 12: “And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; she was with child and she cried out in her pangs of birth, in anguish for delivery” (Rev. 12:1-2). Who is this newborn child? He is described as the messianic king exercising his dominion. In verse 5, the author of Revelation chose the messianic Psalm 2 to describe how this child will “rule all the nations with a rod of iron” (Rev. 12:5, Ps. 2:9). This royal son is taken up to heaven to sit on a throne (Rev. 12:5), and he ushers in the kingdom of God by defeating the devil: “Now the kingdom of our God has come, for the accuser has been throne down” (12:10). Certainly, this newborn child is the royal Messiah, King Jesus.
In this light it is clear who this woman is who gave birth to the messiah: It is Mary. Some people have interpreted this woman in Revelation 12 as merely a symbol either for the Old Testament people of Israel or for the New Testament Church and therefore have concluded that the woman cannot be an individual (i.e., Mary). However, this “either-or” proposition is foreign to the biblical worldview, in which individuals often symbolically represent collective groups. For instance, Adam represented all humanity (Rom. 5:19), and Jacob stood for all of Israel (Ps. 44:4). Given this biblical notion called “corporate personality,” the woman in Revelation 12 should be understood as both an individual (Mary) and a symbol for the people of God.
But for our purposes, once we see that this woman is Mary, the mother of Jesus, it is important to note how she is portrayed as queen in this passage. Her royal office is hinted at by the imagery of the sun, moon, and twelve stars, which recalls the Old Testament story of Joseph’s dream in which the sun, moon, and stars bow down before him, symbolizing his future authority (Gen. 37:9-11). Her queenship is made even clearer by the crown of twelve stars on her head. Just like the queen mother in Jeremiah 13:18, here Mary is wearing a crown, symbolizing her royal office in the kingdom of heaven. In sum, Revelation 12 portrays Mary as the new queen mother in the Kingdom of God, sharing in her son’s rule over the universe.
We have seen how the Old Testament queen mother tradition serves as an important background for understanding Mary’s royal office. Indeed, the New Testament portrays Mary as the queen mother par excellence. Thus, prayers, hymns, and art giving honor to Mary’s queenship are most fitting biblical responses for Christians. In honoring her as queen mother we do not take anything away from Christ’s glory, but rather we exalt him even more by recognizing the great work he has done in her and through her. Understanding Mary as queen mother sheds light on her important intercessory role in the Christian life. Just like the queen mother of the Davidic kingdom, Mary serves as advocate for the people in the Kingdom of God today. Thus, we should approach our queen mother with confidence, knowing that she carries our petitions to her royal son and that he responds to her as Solomon did to Bathsheba: “I will never refuse you.”

PERPETUAL VIRGINITY OF MARY “It is written (Ezekiel 44, 2): ‘This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall pass through it. Because the Lord the God of Israel hath entered in by it…’ What means this closed gate in the house of the Lord, except that Mary is to be ever inviolate? What does it mean that ‘no man shall pass through it,’ save that Joseph shall not know her? And what is this - ‘The Lord alone enters in and goeth out by it,’ except that the Holy Ghost shall impregnate her, and that the Lord of Angels shall be born of her? And what means this - ‘It shall be shut for evermore,’ but that Mary is a Virgin before His birth, a Virgin in His birth, and a Virgin after His birth.” - Saint Augustine (ca AD 430)
“Who is this gate (Ezekiel 44:1-4), if not Mary? Is it not closed because she is a virgin? Mary is the gate through which Christ entered this world, when He was brought forth in the virginal birth and the manner of His birth did not break the seals of virginity.” - Saint Ambrose of Milan (ca AD 390)
JESUS IS THE ONLY SON OF MARY. if James was his true blood brother, (or Jude or Joses or Simon) Jesus could have easily said to ‘John, bring my mother to James, since he is her child.’ That would be very easy for him to say. There was no evidence at hand that James had gone to Egypt. He still lived close by. The commandment to honor their father and mother were known by both Jews and Christians, and Jesus knew that James was a Jew. He would not break a commandment by taking his mother from him and give him to somebody not blood related to her, just because at the very moment at the cross, he was not there. Also, Jesus would appear to James and certainly knew that James would turn to Christ (1 Cor. 15:7) and become a believer very shortly after. If James was his blood brother, that could not be the reason, because Jesus would know that he would become a believer. The same Jesus who told Peter ahead of time that despite his protestations that Peter would deny him three times (Jn. 13:38) and would also tell him how Peter would die professing his faith in him (Jn 21:18), surely would know that only a little while later James would turn to him. That couldn’t be the reason that Jesus would give Mary to John.
Another important question is, where are the blood brothers and sisters after Jesus died? Let us say that all these alleged brothers and sisters refused to be around their dying brother, while their mother Mary was right at the cross, as the modern Protestant contends. How likely is that? But, let us say that they all thought he was a blasphemer or something and that is why they left their own mother to be by herself. Surely after his death, we’d have some indication of brothers and sisters tending to his body, wouldn’t we? We get 4 gospels, but the highlight of who visits the tombs, and gives spices are Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus and the various Marys. Even if these blood brothers were disbelievers in Jesus, why would absolutely no blood brothers and sisters at least tend to his grave in some fashion? I would hold that was the case, because there were none.
YOU REALLY HAVE COMPREHENSION PROBLEM NO COMMON SENSE........CHRIST one human, and one divine-hypostatically unified, or joined together without admixture in the one divine person of Christ, they were teaching Christ to be two persons with a mere moral union. The Council fathers understood this could never be affirmed by Christians. The Bible declares to us: “… in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Colossians 2:9). And, “… in him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible…” (Colossians 1:16) whole matter is inescapable: If Jesus Christ is one, eternal and unchangeable divine person-God-and Mary is his mother-then Mary is the Mother of that one, eternal and unchangeable person-God. THEREFORE MARY IS THE MOTHER OF GOD

God Bless you Keith!! What beautiful truths you have shared with the world. I used to have a prideful intellectual objection to belief in the Immaculate Conception of Mary. That is until I prayed for our Blessed Mother's intercession for a job, a place to live and a reasonably priced car, three immediate needs I was fairly desperate for at one point in my life. I had not prayed the rosary in years, but I picked up those beads. All three needs were fulfilled within a week of each other, and all within a week of the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Pow! My intellectual objection vanished, my trust in her intercession became profound and my relationship with her has continued to grow throughouit my life, and she has continued to request of her Son and provide miracle after miracle for me and my family. She is indeed our mother as well and brings us to her Son. I cannot encourage my Christian brothers and sisters enough to trust in her intercession and develop a relationship with her as she will increase your relationship with God Himself. Remember, if it were not for Mary's YES to God to be His human cooperator, there would be no Incarnation. No Mary, no Jesus. This is why we respect Mary so highly. Finally, Mary continues to draw the world to her Son through her appearances throughout the ages. She is the Matriarch of her son's church, protecting it, preserving its truths and keeping it on the path to the New Jerusalem. It is because of her that the powers of the netherworld will not prevail against it. She is the new Eve whose foot crushes the head of the serpent. Amen!
