Where Does the Bible Say "Pray to Mary?"

  • This question is often leveled at Catholics and Orthodox Christians by those who feel that the practice of asking the saints for intercessory prayer is not biblical. In this video, former protestant pastor and Catholic convert Keith Nester explores this topic and makes the case that this practice is indeed biblical.

James 5:16 , Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed, scripture is speaking to people who are alive to pray for each other not praying to dead people, our father is the prayer that christ jesus gave us , Matthew 6:9 , one mediator 1 Timothy 2: 5, one advocate 1 John: 1. The Godhead alone is omniscient, only God can hear prayers, any prayer directed to anyone but God, is prayers to idols , as for revelation 12, it's not mary its Israel, mary of Catholicism is not mary of scripture, God's word, mary was a sinner like all mankind, Roman 3:23, mary died like us all because of sin , Roman's 6 : 23 , jesus never elevated mary, that's man made teachings, she is the mother of jesus, not God who is eternal, all blasphemous teachings against the one true God, christ is the only mediator, the only way to the Father , the sinless lamb of God, only one who could do what no one through history could do was to live a sinless life and give his life as a ransom to the Father for sinners, catholic teachings do not line up with scripture, so only one can be right God's infallible and inerrant word stands alone as truth .

Hey Melanie, of course I will do. A bit of background, I was raised Catholic and during my teen years, I really moved away from my believes. Life seemed fine and went on to college and grad school. During grad school, I met my, now wife, who is a devoted catholic. I even said to her to not expect me to go to church with her. Obviously, since I love her so much, I would go with her to Church almost every Sunday, but I was just sitting there, not really immersed in Mass. Fast forward a few years, during the pandemic, my wife asked me to pray the Rosary everyday to consagrate our new born with the immaculate heart of Mary. During the prayer, my 2 month old daughter started laughing and I started smelling flowers. It was beautiful. That was my first encountered but I didn’t make much of it. A year after, we were praying the Rosary again because my wife wanted me to. We put some flowers in Holy Water and prayed. I went to sleep and I dreamed of the Virgin Mary. She said to me: don’t worry Diego, all will be okay. The day after, I had scheduled a follow up upper endoscopy just to make sure I didn’t have any pre-cancerous condition from my severe acid reflux. The endoscopy came clean and I just couldn’t believe it. Like if nothing happened. I called the doctor to tell her that the results were a mistake, and she said no that it was what she had seen. I was perplexed. At this point, I started believing a bit more again. The last encounter happened just 2 weeks after when my wife and I went to Mexico City. We went to the Basicila of Guadalupe and when I saw the Virgin’s image, it felt like she told me: Diego, you’ve been looking for answers for many years now and nothing has worked. Go back to the Lord as He is the answer to all your problems. I must say that my marriage has been difficult mostly because of our families and I was falling in depression because I just didn’t know what else to try. This time, I heard the Virgin and actually did what she said to me. I started praying more. I grabbed the Bible and started reading more. My life has changed a lot since then. If it wasn’t for our blessed mother, I’d just be another sheep stray. But she brought me back to the Lord and I can say that things have improved in my life. When things don’t go my way, I don’t blame the Lord anymore but my own free will since that’s when issues start happening.

I have a Catholic Bible, I appreciate the Catholic canon for the extra books it has such as the wonderful Book of Sirach, or Ecclesiasticus. I do not embrace their church or heretical teachings. Calling a man Holy Father goes directly against what Jesus Christ taught. Do not pray using vain repetitions. These teachings are taught in the Sermon on the Mount. Praying to statues is idolatry, graven images as the Bible calls it.
"And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it." - Luke 11:27-28
Someone says to Jesus that Mary is blessed and he immediately corrects them and says blessed instead are those who keep the Word of God.
"And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" - Luke 2:48-49
Mary says Joseph and her have been looking for Him and he immediately corrects her and says the God is His Father and not Joseph.
Anyway I hope you pursue biblical truth, and no matter where you go please make sure you compare your preacher's teachings with what is in the Word of God. God bless you 🙏

Hey mate :) Does the Catholic Church teach, that praying to statues is okay?
Jesus himself prayed in the garden of Getsemania 3x the same words. This was not vain repetition. So why would praying things repeatedly (like for a example the rosary) be vain.
As for Luke 11: Jesus says that those are blessed who keep his word. Mary kept always his word. That is why she is blessed (and not (only) because she is his mother.
Paul calls Abraham in Romans Chapter 6 his father several times. So it seems to me that the verses you are referring to have a slight different meaning, haven’t they?

After I prayed The Rosary a few times, I began to feel what better human person to have intercede for me ,to Our Lord, than His mother?!! I have a question though: catholics say that they're not worshipping, just talking, asking for help, etc. . However, I have seen many also bow to the statue of Mary during those prayers. Like get on their, knees before a mary statue to say a whole rosary(even though repetative prayers are put down in the Bible). Yes, you may say that bowing is not worship, but when John bowed to the angel and when I think Peter was bowed too, why did they stop it immediately? Both the angel and Peter clearly said to stop because they are just servants of the Lord. Why is that considered different now? Wouldn't that still be worship since it's the same action?
Second, since prayer to saints is said to be talking/asking to the ones who aren't on earth anymore, why is it that Saul was punished for trying to talk to Samuel? (1 samuel 28). Yes, he used a medium, but he just wanted help from a godly, holy man, right? While we don't use mediums to pray to the saints, couldn't it be considered a form of self-mediumship since we are connecting, talking, and asking for help to a person who's no longer alive on earth? Yes, we're not actively summoning them physically but isn't that still technically the same thing? We can get dreams and manifestations of Mary, isn't that sort of like how mediums can hear what the "dead" are saying? It is a manifestation of some kind or another.

If you are bowing before someone as an act of worship and that is your intent, well then your intent is worship. If you are bowing as a sign of respect like people do before royalty and your intent is to demonstrate your respect for their appointment it's just that and physical display and nothing more. We are just demonstrating our respect for the appointment of Mary. Don't worry so much it can paralyze you. It's has done that to me before. It's not healthy. The rosary is just another tool or physical act to help make a spiritual difference. Mt wife has a vivid imagination and when she becomes angst or upset or overwhelmed by something she will recite the rosary to give her mind a positive healthy thing to do rather than let it go on a rampage. Don't over think this stuff too much. Ask your questions and accept the answers. I was previously protestant and there was so much fear and intimidation in the way to think. I like most people was wooed by the peace of the Mass, especially orthodoxy. Here's is what helped me...the fact is any congregation of any faith in the world is going to have fake believers in the pews and genuine, and it might even change moment to moment...what matters to God is what is in your heart.

I am born and raised orthodox. And it wasn't until adulthood that I realized we had to pray to Mary. I really appreciate how you say that you want to answer people's sincere questions. I am struggling with this sooo terribly. I never prayed to anyone but God. Never thought about it. Grew reading the bible. Grew up constantly seeking God. Then after 20 years in an atheist country I came back to my orthodox country where I have been basically told that if I don't pray to Mary I am disrespecting God. I am disobeying God. And I am suspicious to all for not praying to Mary and the saints, but especially Mary. Can anyone please please please help. As I can't do this. I met a man just today. An older man, who randomly struck a conversation with me saying he believes in Mary. I pressed him about Jesus, but he kept refusing to acknowledge Jesus, and said that Mary healed him a number of times and that he just believes in Mary. Now, I know you say we aren't praying to her we are asking for her intercession. But the akathists, the paraclises, if they aren't worship, if their wording isn't meant to create confusion, then I don't understand what worship is then. If it smells like a dog, and barks like a dog and looks like a dog. Why are you calling it not a dog? This is what I struggle with the most. Because if ever I nerd help form the church, I am given only one solution. Go home and pray to Mary. That's that. How is this not worship? Which one of you has time to devout 1.5hrs (which is how long the paraclises takes to read) to Mary? And then where do you fit prayer to God?? Where is your relationship with God? Why aren't we allowed a relationship with God? Aren't we meant to be one of the saints? Each of us? Who are supposed to love God with all our heart and all our might? Will Mary stand besides each of us in the day of judgement when our lives are weighed and cover for us?? How is this anything to do with what the Bible teaches? How? I sincerely want to repent and be told I am wrong if I am wrong. But I sincerely cant see the truth of this. Please help.

As Keith was mentionning the *saints are alive in Heaven, can receive our prayers/requests and take them to God* , he cited scripture to back this up. Do you accept that?

As Catholics, the holy bible teach us, only the human body dies but our soul (spiritual body) still lives (temporal) until the day on final judgement. When our body dies, our souls will then get a temporal judgement. We either go to heaven, hell or purification (purgatory). Our dead bodies can't hear but our souls can. In that sense all our prayers and intentions can be heard and ask the angels and saints including Mary for the intercession of our prayers to God. But we can also pray and worship directly to God. And worship deserve only to God. We can only show respect for Mary but not worship her. That's why in the Holy Rosary we say Mother Mary ... pray for us.And not Mother Mary... I pray to you or worship you. We ask our Mother Mary's help to pray to God so that our intentions will be heard. Just imagine how Mary played an important role when Jesus did the first miracle on the wedding at Cana. Even Jesus told her that the time has not come for Him to do so but He did it anyway because of her insistence and his love and respect to her Mother. That's how influential she is.

If there’s anyone who should be in heaven, it should be David.
Yet, the Bible tells us that he has not ascended into heaven.
John 5:28-29 tells us that the dead are in their graves when Yahshua will return:
“Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are IN THE GRAVES shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation” (John 5:28-29).

He was kind to women who were decent but was cruel to women that were sleazy. Quebec was the most Catholic part of North America for two hundred years. Yet women in Quebec could not vote in provincial elections until 1942. The men in Quebec prayed to Mary but treated their own women as second class citizens. Protestants in the USA treated their own women better than Catholic men in Quebec.

On this date, The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, I will in a few minutes pray the rosary and add you in my petitions for Mary Our Mother to intercede for you and your ministry. I lost my mother on December 13, and although I have prayed daily to God the Father and Jesus to receive her into their kingdom, I'm still praying the rosary daily asking the Virgin Mary to intercede for her. It is a great consolation to have a human mother chosen by God to give birth to a Divine Son to die for our sins. She knows all about it, and I trust in her who knows suffering. How many times has she come down to tell us to pray? Yet we don't listen. Thank you for your devotion to the rosary. Your brother in Christ, Juan (from PR)

You do know that Jesus and Mary were both alive, breathing and could communicate. Bad news my friend, those in the grave cannot hear nor speak.
The question Jesus asks His mother isn’t rude, either. It may sound rude in the KJV: “What have I to do with thee?” (John 2:4), but it was a common idiom. In the Greek, Jesus’ question is “Ti emoi kai soi?” The phrase was used to ask of the connection between two people. The question could be translated as “What business do we have with each other?” Or, in less formal terms, “What does this have to do with me?” (ESV) or “Why do you involve me?” (NIV). Again, Jesus is expressing the fact that He is independent of His mother; as eager as Mary was to see Jesus do a miracle, she had no right to determine the time or the manner in which Jesus publicly revealed His glory. Jesus makes His point gently and without being rude, however.
Jesus concludes His statement to Mary with, “My hour has not yet come.” The reference to His “hour” or “time” (NET) means that Jesus was constantly working from a divine timetable. So, He wasn’t going to reveal His power sooner than God the Father intended (see John 5:30). One of the points Jesus made in His temptation in the desert was that there is such a thing as doing the right thing for the wrong reasons (Matthew 4:1-10). That is, it would be wrong to perform a miracle if the time and place are not according to God’s will.

Also the Caananite woman who asked Jesus for a miracle but Jesus said no because it wasn't the time for the gentiles, but Lord Jesus was moved by her faith he ended up performing a miracle for her even though it wasn't the time for gentiles. So should we ask her to pray for us too? 🤔
      Matthew 15:21-28
The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him. “Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”
27 “Yes it is, Lord,” she said. “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.”
28 Then Jesus said to her, “Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed at that moment.

Christ calls to his father as being God and Jesus says, “before Abraham was, I Am” showing us that he is in union, a person of the holy trinity, with God the Father, since at the burning bush, God the Father told Moses he was “I Am.” It’s totally possible for perfection to exist in 3 different persons, because it is a holy trinity, because they make up the single one God, and it isn’t impossible for God to be perfect in 3 persons, if it was impossible, then he wouldn’t be God because nothing is impossible for God and Jesus Christ himself said that he is God throughout the Gospel, as I mentioned. Jesus said He will build His church on Peter, and give Peter the keys to the kingdom of heaven and whatever Peter holds bound on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever Peter hold loosed on earth will be loosed in heaven. Jesus started a church. The word Catholic was first used in the 1st century because it was the universal church. Jesus also stated that the gates of hell would never prevail against His church. He promised to be always with it. No need to start another church because Jesus church would never fall. I wish if you had read the Bible once in your life, you would have never said this kind of nonsense.
Did you see what Jesus replied when Mary came for a request when wine was finished?
      John 2:4 -
      4. *“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.”*
(Please read carefully - Woman, why do you involve me?, did Jesus really need Mary's interference?)
Another verse when Mary and her sons wanted to meet Jesus when he was preaching to the crowd, look what Jesus said -
      Matthew 12:47-50 -
      47. Someone told him, *“Your mother and brothers are standing outside,* wanting to speak to you.” 48. He replied to him, *“Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49. Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”*
(Did you see - someone told Jesus "Your mother and brothers standing outside"
Do you still wanted to called Mary a vergin?
What was Jesus replied - Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?
Do you still need a mediator between God and Jesus? May God open your eyes.)
Please read the Holy Bible; you don't need any other explanations to know God. The Bible is the only Holy Book given to us that leads us to God.
A few verses I will post it here for your reference. -
      1 Timothy 2:5-6
*5. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, 6. who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.*
      1 Corinthians 3:4-8
      4. When one of you says, “I am a follower of Paul,” and another says, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you acting just like people of the world? 5. After all, who is Apollos? Who is Paul? We are only God’s servants through whom you believed the Good News. Each of us did the work the Lord gave us. *6. I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.* 7. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. 8. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.
      Matthew 24:35
*35. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.*
      I hope this makes sense.
      God bless you 😊

Hey, thank you for clearing it up for those who are confused about it. As a born Catholic, I always receive questions from my friends who are either Christian or Anglican that "Oh you're catholic so you pray to Mary and not Jesus? You guys don't believe in Jesus and worship Mary." And I was like, "No..?" Because in my experiences with the Roman Catholic church masses, people can come in and also see that we do not pray directly to Mother Mary, we pray to Jesus Christ and read passages in the Bible all the time. Even when I do my personal prayers, I pray to Jesus Christ all the time. The only time we pray for intercession with Mother Mary is the Holy Rosary prayer, where yes, as you mentioned we pray the 'Our Father' prayer a lot in it as well as 'Glory Be' prayer together. I don't exactly know the reason why we do intercessions with Mother Mary as well, but I was taught that praying the Holy Rosary is a weapon against sin. When we pray it, it's praying for redemption of sin not just for us but for all the sinners in the world as well. I find it personally a very humbling act of praise and worship, and like you said in this video, we don't exactly pray to the saints as well. In the Holy Rosary prayer sessions that I went to for years, at the end of the prayer we will ask the Saints, Mother Mary and Michael the Archangel to pray for us after meditating on the 5 mysteries (There is 4 sets of it, it's changing depending on the day you pray, the mysteries are all events of Jesus' journey in the Bible). I see it as it is, it's like asking your church community to pray for you because prayer is powerful when its in a group. I believe it is what you said that we're asking those that are in heaven now with God to pray for us because they are near God, literally in heaven where God is. The more prayers the better to fight off sin and build His kingdom.

Not the same thing AT ALL -- Lazarus and the Rich Man were both physically dead and their living Spirits in Sheol -- Lazarus was in a pleasant place called Abraham's Bosom where the Spirits of believers went to wait for Jesus to die on the cross and come to Sheol to set them free* (1Peter 3:18-20, 1Peter 4:5-6) -- *and the Jewish Rich Man was in the fiery torment of Hell for unbelievers -- these two compartments in Sheol could see each other and the Spirits could commune with each other* (Luke 16:22-26. *But Jesus set the Believers in Abraham's Bosom free -- they resurrected with Jesus 2000 years ago* -- Matthew 27:52-53 -- *Jesus being FIRST Fruit of that resurrection* -- 1Corinth 15:20.
*NOW the living Spirits of Believers go directly to Heaven when they physically die* -- Phil 1:23-24, 2Corinth 5:6-8, etc -- *and once in Heaven, the Believers are only focused on praising and worshiping GOD/Jesus* -- see Revelation 5:9-13, Rev 7:9-12 -- *they are not aware of the horrors and suffering on earth* -- Revelation 21:4 -- *so praying/asking assistance of them is a waste of time.*
*GOD/Jesus have told you* (a physically alive Believer) *to pray/ask assistance ONLY FROM THEM* -- John 14:13-14, Matthew 6:7-9, Isaiah 8:19, etc -- *GOD has FORBIDDEN His people to ever pray/ask assistance from the living Spirits of physically dead Saints/Believers -- that is the satanic work of witches and mediums -- LOOK at what God did to Saul for asking assistance of the living Spirit of physically dead Saint Samuel in 1Samuel **28:15** and 1Chron **10:15* -- please know that the OT is our example (1Corinth 10:11)

When they say, You just need to pray to Jesus, he doesn't need anyone else's help and I say, you are correct, but he did have 12 dudes with him that he gave different task to do along the way....why is that?? During the apparitions in Akita (Japan- 1973-1981), recognized by the Church, our Mother Mary told Sister Agnes that the only weapons that will remain for us will be the Rosary and the Sign left by her son (the Holy Cross). She asked us to pray for the pope, bishops and priests. Please continue to pray and do not allow yourself to be stripped of your only weapons against evil.

Like every mother the connection between mother and child continues despite the cutting of the cord at birth and continues even after death. When a child suffers so does the mother. Therefore Mary also suffered the passion through the her sun and his triumph over death was also hers. We need to stop the separation of mother from child because the two are indeed connected. Also the first miracle of the wedding at Cana was through the intercession of Mary. The immaculate heart of Mary is forever connected in communion with the Sacred heart of Jesus. God bless all of you.

Thank you, Keith. There has been so much history lost, along with the understanding. Thank you for so much clarity. The Fourth Commandment says to honor your Father and Mother. The Rosary teaches the exceptional times in Jesus' life and was easy to share. Many were illiterate and Bibles were not in print, so the Rosary became an important teaching tool through the mysteries. The French language has so many names for love so that it is clear. Our love of Mary is not worship, but love as to a mother and her beautiful example for our lives.

The best analogy I've heard about why it is good to pray to (ask for help from) the saints is imagine life as a marathon race. The saints have finished the race, but rather than bask in the glory owed to victors, they're running back down the course to help and encourage the rest of us to finish strong. I like this vision because any true Christian should want to see everyone overcome their trials here on earth and get to heaven. Yet we all struggle, we all fall, and just knowing that there are people who have gone through the same struggles as us that are now in heaven cheering us on to get back up and keep going, I find that very encouraging.

@@sammygomes7381 Asking someone to pray for you and praying directly to them are vastly different things. (Hebrews 12:1) (Revelation 5:8) and the verses about being required to pray for each-other and the fact that there is power in the prayers of the righteous, make it undeniable that invoking the prayers of the Saints TO God is not unbiblical, as a matter of fact saying we can’t request prayers from saints is not biblical.
When it comes to Mary, Catholics believe in divine grace. Grace is supernatural gift from God that allows us to have increased resistance towards temptation and sin, and to be forgiven and born again. Salvation is achieved via the divine redemptive grace Christ gave us freely even though we did not deserve it, however, if one does not cooperate with the grace (which means not loving God, having faith in him, confessing Jesus, and being in willing disobedience to what we were commanded to do) we can lose the fruits of the gift of salvation. (1 Corinthians 6:9). Since Mary was called FULL of grace and she was chosen to be the vessel of Christ. It stands to reason she was always going to have this role and received an abundance of grace in order to avoid personal sin and original sin, to be a fitting tabernacle for the Lord to physically dwell in. So her prayers would be exceedingly righteous and helpful, that’s why we ask her to pray for us.
