The princess of punk. A legend. She married Fred “Sonic” Smith of the MC5. Had 2 kids and moved to Michigan. Fred passed away. Raised her two kids and moved back to NY. She’s been touring around the world. She published a couple of books. A wonderful person loved by so many musicians and fans.
Good band to check out ilve - MC5 performing in 1970 such as Kick Out the Jams. That's punk roots from 5 years before even Gloria. Prime Patti Smith: Dancing Barefoot.
Respectively, you have SO SO undersold Patti. As for the couple of books (now 4), her memoir Just Kids won the National Book Award. Everyone should read Just Kids. She was married to Robert Mapplethorpe prior to Fred Smith, and Mapplethorpe was also a pioneer. (OR did you deliberately omit that)
Actually, this is a "sort of" cover. It merges the song "Gloria" by Van Morrison and Patti's own poem "Oath", turning it into something unique. By the way, this is the album that inspired Michael Stipe (from R.E.M.) to become a poet/performer.
Patti Smith is the Mother of Punk Rock, and Amber picked up on The Doors influence. In her autobiography, *Just Kids* she tells the story of seeing The Doors (the definitive, Live version of Roadhouse Blues was recorded at that show) and Morrison’s poetry inspired her to set her poetry to music like he did. And the rest is music history (herstory?). Gloria is a cover of a song by Them w/ Van Morrison (no relation to Jim! 😂); and The Doors also do a great cover of Gloria.
Poet, Punk, Songsmith - NYC Underground Heartbeat, Rebel. Love this woman. ALSO: Anyone old enough to remember Gilda Radner's impression of Patti on Saturday Night Live?
This woman is a hero of mine. Such a beautiful, empathetic soul. A wonderful mother, wife, friend, poet, artist. And she rocks hard! This is a master class in dynamic performance.
Patti Smith is an amazing artist ~ if you have the time look into her history. Smith is a recipient of the 2022 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize. Released in 1975, SMITH'S FIRST RECORDING, HORSES, WAS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL RECORDING REGISTRY AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS IN 2009 BY THE NATIONAL RECORDING PRESERVATION BOARD.
Glad you liked this one. The band started when Patti Smith was going to read her poetry in a cafe or something and her friend Lenny Kaye offered to bring his guitar to accompany her. The photo was taken by her friend Robert Mapplethorpe. You mentioned The Doors. Patti Smith and Jim Morrison are both poets and The Doors did their own take on this song. You should check out the original by Them too.
Dancing Barefoot by PS is a must. Not surprisingly she is a great writer. I enjoyed her first two books immensely. So used to listening to the version by The Doors. This was a treat.
I discovered Patti Smith backwards through artists recording her music like "Dancing Barefoot" by U2. I also remember her as a regular on David Letterman." This particular album cover is the one I remember most. I remember this song from Van Morrison.
@@kbusby4824Dude, “Gloria” was written by Van Morrison when he was the lead singer for the 60’s group THEM. It’s one of those quintessential 60’s tunes.
The American Punk Priestess, a member of the late 70s CBGBs punk scene. She's really a poet first, very much lived life as a devoted artist. She wrote a book called Just Kids about her life in NYC in the 70s, it won a National Book Award for Non-Fiction, it's seriously fantastic and I highly recommend it. She's an excellent writer. Definitely, the next Patti Smith song I advise you react to is Dancing Barefoot. One of my all-time favorite songs and def fave Patti tune.
Yeah, “Dancing Barefoot” is yet another great cover of hers.. great Bruce Springsteen tunes. My favorite cover of hers is The Byrds tune “So Ya Wanna Be A Rock n’ Roll Star”.
It might be hard to believe listening to this tune that Patti Smith would later write one of the sweetest child lullabies ever done by a popular musician. "The Jackson Song" from her 1988 Dream of Life will have Amber all emotional I bet.
Thx y’all! I’m Patreon Terry. I’m on my friends phone cuz mine died but I had to comment! I was in the Navy in the late 70s when on liberty in Copenhagen at Big Daddy’s. None of my buddies knew who Patty Smith was but I sure did! When her band was on break she came up to our table and leaned onto our table and said “who wants to dance?” Of course I said “Me!” And we danced! Love n peace!
I’m turning 65 in two days and I have been in more posh pits at Patti Smith concerts than for anybody else. A living legend. Gloria always one of the highlights of her earlier year concerts. Nothing like being with hundreds or thousands of other fans simultaneously bopping to rhythmic music and her delivery. She had a special gift of bringing you into her music and world, and almost trance-like (but not in a bad way) leading you. Her concerts were some of the most interactive, energetic and fun I have ever attended. Have brought a number of skeptics to get concerts and they all became concerts!
Yes!!! I was 19 when I bought her album Horses. I can remember the record store, the sales clerk, and the way the sky looked that day. She, and Tom Waits, were my fabulous finds in the music world in that brief shining period of my life.
Michael Stipe, the lead singer of R.E.M. said when he was young he listened to an album by Patti Smith over and over, wanted to sing like her, and she became his idol. He eventually met her, they are close friends, and she sings with R.E.M. on one of their songs "E-bow the Letter." They do a lot of work together for global environmental improvement.
You guys are Great! React to the original 1964 version of "Gloria" by The group "Them" with lead singer Van Morrison, (Proto Punk) Also, react to "Here Comes The Night" by Them and Van Morrison.
Patti Smith had another great hit at the late 80s People have the Power ...and I recall exactly when they play it on the radio, I got chills... love all your reactions..hugs to you and the family..
40+ years after first hearing Patti and watching her perform on Saturday Night Live, the closest thing to punk in 1970s Oklahoma, I drug my wife to the Anthem in DC to see her live. She did this one live of course. She’s still the First Lady of punk! And still a great live act!
Back in 1975, when punk rock barely existed even in New York, this transplanted Chicago native had been hitting the clubs of the Big Apple reciting her poetry, wih guitarist Lenny Kaye and pianist Richard Sohl providing accompaniment. Then the charging rhythm section of bassist Ivan Kral and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty (who left Blondie to join Patti) was added, and the result was "Horses", one of the most orignal-sounding debut albums rock ever produced. It was a perfect summation of pop (ie. the band's deconstructed version of "Gloria", not to mention Kaye's other passion- archiving 60s garage rock, resulting in his compiling "Nuggets", one of the first, and most influential. post-British Invasion, pre-psychedelic compilation albums) and the avant-garde art world ("Horses" was produced by fomer Velvet Underground member John Cale, and the stark, gorgeous cover photo was taken by influential photgrapher Robert Mapplethorpe, Smith's one-time roommate- and sometime boyfriend). Listening to the layered build-up of this song still gives me chills.
“Free Money” is a great Patti tune- she actually wrote that one. “Dancing Barefoot” is a great song Bruce Springsteen gave to her.. but she didn’t write it, she just sang his song.
This album is a classic. The title track Horses is stunning and Redondo Beach has such a great story to it. Also, if you love Patti, it may be a good time to go back around and check out more Sinead O’Conner. I’d highly recommend her amazing song “Troy”. You’ll be blown away!
Not to be that person, but they need to look for the track on UA-cam titled "Land" (with "Horses" as part of its subtitle). You're absolutely right, it's stunning and a pure work of art! ❤
Always been a big fan of Patti Smith, she has several books out, her autobiography M Train is a great read. I grew up loving poetry and literature as she did, and her tales of working in old book shops in NY while starting her musical career and working with so many of the iconic early punk rocker's at CBGB's is amazing.
Artsy for sure! One of the things that makes Patti Smith different from most pop / rock musicians is that she was originally a poet who took on music after being more of a spoken word poetry performer. She always loved rock music, especially of the early '60s, pre-Beatles. And as she has said, in the early '70s she had ideas about how rock music should evolve next, and though she could help move it along. So she got a guitarist friend to start jamming with her poetry, and things developed from there. If you do another Patti Smith song I'd recommend "Land: Horses / Land Of A Thousand Dances / La Mer (De)" from her biggest album, "Horses." It's extra long, but it fully showcases Smith's raw creativity. And raw creativity is one of the main ingredients of what became Punk Rock.
I didn't appreciate Patti Smith until I saw her perform at Lollapalooza in Chicago. She was fantastic...one of the most memorable live performances that I have ever seen. I saw her perform again with her son a few years ago. She's fantastic. LOVE her!

Jay&Amber, for female Friday: Jackie DeShannon - "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" or "What the World Needs Now Is Love"!! ! She’s one of the early singer-songwriters.
I second that, and yes, very under rated ( to use an over used phrase ). From early sixties and very influential. She wrote " Bette Davis Eyes " that Kim Carnes had a huge hit with. I believe Jay and Amber reacted to that.
She was and is a poet and writer. One of most iconic opening line on any album. Her guitarist Lenny Kaye also was the guy that compiled the Nuggets compilation that so many punk bands loved and were influenced by. Kind of random aside, she wrote a beautiful remembrance in the New Yorker of Sam Shepard, her friend, actor, playwright, after he died; I just read it the other day, so was thinking of it here.
Patti Smith is such a cool artistic soul. Have to hear "People Have the Power" ... And Amber check out her National Book Award winner "Just Kids" about starting out in NY in the 70s... and her poetry. Patti is a gift.

Patti Smith is a powerful performer, poet, and writer. Yet she remains both a humble and a positive person after suffering personal losses and years in the very tough music industry. I highly recommend other songs by her and her band, "Dancing Barefoot" and especially "Frederick". "Frederick" was written about her love for her husband, guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith a few years before he tragically passed away.
The Doors have a great version of Gloria, you'd love it! Gloria is an original song by Van Morrison which many artists have covered. The Doors is probably the most famous cover of it, but this one is great. It's got the punk spin on it while The Doors' version of course sounds like them.
The Doors version is great, but as for popularity, the 1965 cover by the Shadows of Knight hit #10 on the Billboard charts I dig Van's remake of GLORIA with John Lee Hooker on his "Too Long in Exile" album
Some of accolades include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and being listed as #47 on Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Artists of all time.
You should check out her song from the 80s, People Have the Power. You can also play a couple more from solo Debbie Harry - french kissin’ (in the u.s.a.), backfired.
The first part of the song was by her highness queen of punk herself, the second one by Van Morrison made famous by 60s garage blues/punk outfit The Shadows of Knight - you HAVE to try out their adrenaline kicking version (as well as other songs by them). Patti was first of all a poet and second a musician (like Leonard Cohen) but worked together with different artists as well, like Blue Oyster Cult (their guitarist appeared on this album)
One of the great all time songs, interpretations - with her poetry at the start. when i first heard this it changed my life. The whole album, Horses is a masterpiece. Where it all started. Great you guys enjoyed this. Good doors pick up that was one of her favourite bands.
She lived part of her youth near my hometown. Saw her live a few times. Once was opening for Neil Young and what an amazing show it was. Her book “Just Kids” is an interesting great read about her time in NYC when she first started out on the scene
I have been asking for months. I don't know why they're doing so many repeats when there are so many great artists they haven't explored, but maybe not enough of us have asked?

This was her first release, and this is the first song on the album. First words, "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine." In my book the best words opening and album, and career.
Love some Patti Smith! Funny story, 1979 I was in the Air Force stationed in England ….. here album Wave dropped and I took a picture of the cover and sent it to my Mom saying I found my soulmate….she was not amused…. 😂
Yeah, another legend, you guys are bouncing into a bunch of them lately! Do her Because the Night, studio original plus she does a fantastic live version at the Concerts for the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame back in 2009 with Bruce Springsteen and U2, just an epic gig. Mick Jagger then comes out and does an electric Gimme Shelter with U2 and Fergie on backing vocals opposite Mick, another incredible performance you really should see. Wow! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
Never heard this song by Patti Smith. Her two biggest hits were "People have the power", which is a great upbeat danceable song and "Because the night", a great rocker she wrote with Bruce Springsteen. Hope you can review those sometime. You guys are the best. Thanks for such great videos and for your excellent critique of all this music. God bless.
I was thirteen the year this album came out. Since then Patti Smith has been my punk queen! The Gloria part, is Van Morrisons song from 1965. Patti Smith make it so much better!
Patti rules...She is the last of great beat poets. Her word assaults are unmatched, and this her debut, is regarded as one the most important rock albums of the 70s. Check out Birdland, Kimberly, and Horses from this album. She was a wild performer onstage as well, easily a contender with Iggy Pop and Jim Morrison.
Great job by Patti Smith on this cover of a song originally released by Them featuring the one and only Van Morrison on vocals!! Give it a try sometime!!
48 years since I bought the album Horses never having heard about Patti Smith. First number on side 1: GLORIA. Incredible! And it's still powerfull as back then.
Oh be still my heart, ❤❤❤my hero Ms Patti Smith, singer , award winning author , songwriter, artist, mother, poet, activist extraordinaire. I'm so thrilled that you did her. She was part of the original NYC punk CBGB scene. I'm glad you liked her. First Iggy and now Patti ... she is incredible. HORSES -RADIO ETHiOPIA-WAVE-EASTER.......all CLASSIC albums. In my humble opinion, she is the very definition of an artist, in everyway. The album cover is by famous photographer Roger Maplethorpe. Patti won a National Book award for her memoir of her relationship with Roger. ("Just Kids"). ASK THE ANGELS and PUMPING MY HEART are 2 other great rocking songs. But I love everything she does (not just all her music). In case you couldn't tell, I am a HUGE fan. ......she is an amazing woman!!!
Oh, she has that artistic sense. I just saw her (9/16) at the Anthem in DC. It was not your traditional concert. It was an experience, a protest, Woodstock, a love in, some poetry, folk songs, a religious experience, covers, rock songs, conversations with the audience, and a lot of cussing. For a woman who is 76, she can rock hard and it's clear she lives with her foot on the gas. Very creative. Try Dancing Barefoot next.
Her memoirs are a beautifully written chronicle of her life and times. Start with Just Kids for the early years and her deep friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorp. Punk Poet.
Smith is a legend. Rock star in the style of Chrissie Hynde. She was on the New York downtown art scene, very close to iconic photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Early 70's was a time of Great art and experimentation. Grateful for having come of age at this moment in time. Did a lot of performances with Lou Reed.
She's been a favorite of mine since this came out in 79. Thanks so much for not getting caught up in all the swooning over the "Jesus died" part of this. There is an element that can't get beyond that to appreciate her work.
One of my all time favorite songs and singers...please do Dancing Barefoot and Beneath the Southern Cross....she is such an amazing influential singer/poet/author
In around 1996-97, a friend and I went to see Neil Young and Crazy Horse at the Irvine Amphitheater. When I got the tickets I didn’t realize that Patti Smith was going to be on the ticket too. They had an opening band that I had never heard of, but I always try to give them a chance. I thought the guitarist had potential, but the band wasn’t that good. Patti Smith came out next, and when the guitarist hit the first chord, it was so perfect that it was easy to tell that there was musical genius on the stage! And the hour long show was incredible! I thought, who would want to come out and play after them. Of course, Neil Young is one musician who can easily do it. Neil spent the next 2-1/2 hours jumping up and down, jamming on his electric guitar, beaming with great joy. He loves rocking hard with Crazy Horse. What a great night, two shows with genius musicians. She was a fixture at CBGBs, a birth place of several punk bands. The Ramones and Talking Heads came out of there. I think you would love her 1975 debut album “Horses.” And her 2000 album “Gung Ho” is another great one. But, really, you can pick up any of her albums and have great music.

Love Patti Smith! People Have the Power is a song we all need to listen to these days!
The Doors version is great, but as for popularity, the 1965 cover by the Shadows of Knight hit #10 on the Billboard charts
I dig Van's remake of GLORIA with John Lee Hooker on his "Too Long in Exile" album
😂 This is ok for it’s “punkiness”, but check out The Doors and every other bands version of this cover song instead.. 🙄
Patti needs way more credit then she gets!!!
Love this song
Love Patti. Her books are wonderfully inspiring too. Such a character.
Patti Smith --Horses
"Dancing Barefoot" and "Frederick" should both be next in your Patti Smith reaction lineup.
i absolutely lover her!!!!!!!!!!!! simply brilliant! what a poet!
Patti gives us the freedom to be ourselves….it probably makes us more……poetry can do that when it comes from the heart.
I bought this album when it came out decades ago and played the hell out of it.. ..So good.
Best version of this well covered tune. Patti makes this her own!Try reacting to the tunes Frederic,Dancing Barefoot, and People Have The Power
She lived part of her youth near my hometown. Saw her live a few times. Once was opening for Neil Young and what an amazing show it was. Her book “Just Kids” is an interesting great read about her time in NYC when she first started out on the scene
Pleeeease do Joan Armatrading for female Fri!!!
they will LOVE "Love And Affection" and "Show Some Emotion" by Joan!!!!
I have been asking for months. I don't know why they're doing so many repeats when there are so many great artists they haven't explored, but maybe not enough of us have asked?
@@surlechapeauAnd also Down to Zero… there are so many awesome and diverse choices in Joan’s catalogue, it calls for a rabbit hole dive! Ahh but we’ll settle for just one for now… any one. C’mon guys!💕
@@ecnoto Yes!! diverse from the soft "Willow" on up to the rockin' "Drop The Pilot"!!!
@@surlechapeau ohh myyy yessss!! Love me some JOAN💕💕
In the early 70s I worked at WB records and got to know Patti. A true multi talented artist and a really nice person.
This was her first release, and this is the first song on the album. First words, "Jesus died for somebody's sins, but not mine." In my book the best words opening and album, and career.
That line really catches your attention and draws you in to listen closely. Genius.
Love this tune. Way back she was on SNL and I bought that album, Horses, the next day. An all time great. She 's also a great writer.
Patti Smith is extraordinary! The Gloria Album is one of the best albums ever. If I could have only 1 album for the rest of my life, it would be this!
Now you should react to the original version of this by Them (lead by Van Morrison).
Yasss I love this song
People Have the Power with Choir Choir.
Play her "People Have The Power" song. Inspiring and uplifting. The kind of song we all need to hear right now.
Patti is, above all, a poet!
If you had to pick one song to represent a genre, this defines rock n roll.
Love some Patti Smith! Funny story, 1979 I was in the Air Force stationed in England ….. here album Wave dropped and I took a picture of the cover and sent it to my Mom saying I found my soulmate….she was not amused…. 😂
She does a good cover of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. Banjo, that's all I'm going to say.
What an absolutely insane cover. Brilliant.
God bless.
Jay and Amber have reacted to "Because the Night". That's the other Patti Smith song they were talking about. The video is up on their channel.
He wrote it, and gave it to her.
Okay so I found y'all about 3 hours ago with Meatloaf Paradise by the Dashboard lights and now I've fallen down the rabbit hole and can't stop.
This whole album is pure art, from the cover to the content. This is a deep dive record
Saw her do this live about 15 years ago - totally euphoric experience
FYI ... produced by John Cale of The Velvet Underground.
48 years since I bought the album Horses never having heard about Patti Smith. First number on side 1: GLORIA. Incredible! And it's still powerfull as back then.
Patti Smith was a poet, first. Music was a means to present her poetry to audiences
The best American import to the UK. Seen her live in Manchester a few years ago absolutely brilliant
Man, I love Patti. I got to meet her a couple of times and she's even cooler than I had hoped.
Her memoirs are a beautifully written chronicle of her life and times. Start with Just Kids for the early years and her deep friendship with photographer Robert Mapplethorp. Punk Poet.
Smith is a legend. Rock star in the style of Chrissie Hynde.
She was on the New York downtown art scene, very close to iconic photographer
Robert Mapplethorpe.
Early 70's was a time of Great
art and experimentation. Grateful for having come of age at this moment in time.
Did a lot of performances with
Lou Reed.
My favorite poet of all time
She's been a favorite of mine since this came out in 79. Thanks so much for not getting caught up in all the swooning over the "Jesus died" part of this. There is an element that can't get beyond that to appreciate her work.
The song is from her album Horses from 75
@@jameswiglesworth5004 if I'm old enough to recall it coming out, I'm certainly old enough to be allowed to be fuzzy on some of the details. 😵💫
One of my all time favorite songs and singers...please do Dancing Barefoot and Beneath the Southern Cross....she is such an amazing influential singer/poet/author
Proud to live in Rockaway Beach NY. So does Patti!😊
Patti Smith - The Legendary Punk Rock Poet!
first time I've been reacting along with you. I've never heard this before. thank you.
Because The Night Is another great song by Patti - more mainstream so it was a big hit back in the day
