The song is about seemingly unattainable love. You have a crush on someone who probably barely knows you exist and you voiced it and now it's the talk of the town. 'Chrissie Hynde shared the inspiration for the song during a performance on the BBC Songwriters Circle program in 1999: "I had in mind this kid who used to stand outside the soundchecks on our first tour... I never spoke to him. I remember that the last time I saw him I just left him standing in the snow, I never had anything to say to him. I saw that! Imagine being that guy feeling like a loser because she blew you off and all these years later finding out she wrote this masterpiece for you? Beautiful story, especially the way she told it.
I have finally found the right word to describe her voice. For years I have struggled because "sexy" wasn't QUITE right. I would call it sultry. Many, many, many years ago I got to meet Bono after a U2 concert in Hollywood, Florida. We started talking about The Who and then for some reason the Pretenders were mentioned during our conversation. He told me at the very end of the U2 song "Pride In The Name of Love", that is Chrissie Hynde singing the "oh oh oh oh....oh oh oh oh...." part.
I had the good fortune to see The Pretenders with the original line up between albums 1 & 2. Best live concert I ever saw. Chrissie Hynde has an amazing voice.
Drummer Martin Chambers and Chrissie have an amazing musical bond...they get the best out of each other for 45 yrs. They are each other's muses, in my opinion.
I was so fortunate to see the Pretenders, after they released their 2nd album. Me and my friends had seats in the 8th row. The Pretenders rocked. Eddie Van Halen came out on their encore. His guitar couldn't be heard, they brought him a 2nd guitar, it it wasn't working, Chrissie Hynde, then just took her guitar off and handed it to Eddie, and they just rocked to "You really got me." Such a great concert, and memory.. Love the way you to react to the music and bands, so many of us grew up on.
I'm jealous. I never had the opportunity to see them in concert. I have lived/worked all over the country, but they always seemed to be performing "somewhere else". I think the reason Lex reacts so strongly to music is that she has a rare (but well known and documented) condition where she quite literally SEES sounds. Different notes and vibes evoke different colors for her. That's why sometimes you will hear her telling him that the song is yellow, red, black, etc. She's not using a metaphor. It's literally "how she sees it". In some ways (as a musician) I envy her that. Talk about being even more fully immersed in the song...

This original band The Pretenders was awesome. Chrissie Hynde was amazing. This song Talk of the Town was released in 1980. Honeyman-Scott died at his girlfriends apartment two days after the band released Farndom after repeated drug episodes, Honeyman-Scott died of heart failure due to cocaine intolerance. He was only 25. Then about a year later Farndom was found drowned by his wife in his bathtub from an overdose of heroin. He was only 30. So Sad. Great musicians succumbing once again to drugs.
Love Chrissie Hynde. She was on an episode of Friends where Phoebe is replaced by her at the coffee shop. At the end, Phoebe teaches her to play Smelly Cat. 😂😹
“But it’s hard to live by the rules , I never could, and still never do” One of my favourite lines in rock music. The way she sings it, still moves me.
I WOULD suggest, "The Wait" which is FAB but I can just see Brad saying, "What is she talking about? Who is she waiting for, is someone waiting for her? I don't understand anything she's saying!" Which is cool because I don't think anybody got it either when we 1st heard it! Still, it's a BANGER though! "Talk of The Town" was an MTV staple, arguably the best tune from the 2nd studio album. I think its simply about her longing to be with someone, vocalizing it to others, but not the guy himself, and then wondering, as the years pass, if things could ever be.
My brother's friend's mom was one of our lunch ladies. For a time, we got free lunch and I would wait to the end and go through the line. She would load me up w/ everything that was left, and when I got the checkout she would tell the lady there "He's good, let him go!" and the cashier lady didn't know what to say. LOL Those were the days.
