Michael: there are so many reasons I became a lifetime member to your Guitargate channel. 100% agree and he's just a step above anything and anyone else, it's absolutely ridiculous in the best way humanly possible. Been saying for years that Johnny Hiland is by far the most underrated, and least spoken about guitar players that I can think of. He's phenomenal, crazy licks, and the scary part is he's still getting better.
Really glad to see you cover Johnny Hiland. Saw him with Sammy Hagar some years ago and had no idea who he was at the time. Needless to say after hearing him I was in complete awe. It is no overstatement to say he is one of the best in the world.
I have just found out about him. I play harmonica (46 years and wall full-time by age 20) but I listen to drummers, bass, guitar, horn players too. I love Danny Gatton and that must be what led to this gentleman. Also, little factoid, I had a Swing Dance, Jazz, Blues, R&B Band for 10 years and for about 5 of that our guitar player had played with for a period with Sammy Hagar, I belier it was in the 70's, maybe 80's.

Two of my favorites are Celtic Country and Opus D’Funk from his 2004 self titled debut. The dude’s playing is out of this world...completely mind blowing!!! His story is incredibly inspirational as well...keep shining Johnny!!
Honestly one of the best electric guitar players I've heard. Like you mentioned, his band is phenomenal. The kit that drummer has is so simple but he just makes it work beautifully using his open hi hat as a crash. Another thing that makes the greats the greats is the restraint. It's not only about the notes you play it's also about the ones you don't.

Phenomenal artist to highlight. So much fun to watch! It brings comfort knowing there's guys/bands (yes rhythm section too!) that exist and humanity isn't completely subjected to mainstream manufactured, 'formulaic songs'.
I remember first hearing him probably 15 or more years ago when he first hit the scene and my socks were instantly blown off. He made me decide to try to learn to play some country type stuff which I never really succeeded at but it was certainly life-changing in terms of my playing. It got me more interested in this type of hybrid picking style and led me to discover the older geniuses like Brent Mason, Roy Clark, and Albert Lee.

Johnny is the best player and person in music I’ve known. He’s obviously a beast of a player, but super gracious with his time. As one of his students, he has shown me some gems about how to organize the fretboard and forget useless information that is of no use in playing over anything. The remaining magic is just HIM. He downplays it whenever we meet, but reality is reality. He is a real person who happens to be perhaps the greatest in the world at his craft. He is a gem. A true gem…
I remember about 20 years ago you could usually find him at Guitar Center in the evenings in Berry Hill just hanging out in the acoustic room with his wife just hanging out and talking about/playing guitars...he is seriously one of the sweetest guys you'll ever meet! I'm love seeing him here on your channel this morning, Johnny is looking great these days
Thanks Michael, great, great work as always. Johnny always reminds me of the big brother we all wish we had, what a great human being. Speed, accuracy, technique, coloring and theory without compare, but what is the most amazing to me is the way he gets in and out, and his ability to ALWAYS hit the marks, with perfect time. He could have half the ability he has, yet with his ability to hit his marks so cleanly, he would still be an all-time great musician. Maybe it is the connection of disabilities, but Johnny reminds me of Django Rheinhardt, obviously not style wise, something about their compositions, and I can only hope one day he finds his Stephan Grappelli (not instrument but long-term musical foil). Having loved and played guitar for 4 centuries, and will until the end, having the chance to talk or play or learn with Johnny would be awesome, but i got to say for me personally, being Christian, I would love to go to his church with him on Sunday, get breakfast, and go fishing with Johnny, now that would be memorable beyond compare.

I have been scrolling the comments surprised not to hear the poster or commenters mention Danny Gatton, yes! I believe I have seen an interview with Johnny Highland in an interview mention Danny Gatton though. I keep 2 Danny Gatton CD's in my player for road trips to jam along with.....I am a harmonica player (46 years and was full-time by age 20, starting in Bluegrass bands, then Honky-Tonk, Then a swing dance/Jazz/Blues band 10 years, then Austin for 7) and my fav is "Relentless" with Joey DeFrancesco.
Danny was his hero…you should review Danny Gatton either the Gallaghers session or Sleepwalk or get adventurous and review Crosscut saw…no video but the guitar solo is one of the greatest. Of all time!
Michael…when you play your e minor pentatonic lick on high e and b strings…you’re soooo close to SWYBRYD picking… Incredible stuff JH..love the country with plenty of distortion.
I completely feel ya about that drummer & bassist. I got about 20 seconds in to this video, and had these three concurrent thoughts 1) _Johhny is a GAWWT dang monster on guitar!_ 2) _Who the HELL is that drummer? Man he is driving this whole jam!_ 3) _Who the HELL is that bass player? He is so UP on that drummer's kick and snare, it's ridiculous!_ I have always loved the trio format. You got nothing to hide behind, and if you have a great band with you, you can literally go up onstage and improvise entire songs live, and people will think it's rehearsed note for note. Drummer & bassist are doing that a lot here, and Johnny ain't EVEN missing one kick or one accent. Just great 3 piece playing, thanks so much for posting this, Michael!
I agree with all the accolades for Johnny Hiland. 100% Ferocious. Wolverine would have trouble keeping up. Michael, how fortunate to have taken class with John. Can't wait to see your talk with the man.

Love your live stream with Johnny Hiland!!
I saw Johny play up close at a NAMM booth a few years ago. Just an incredible talent. Really nice guy.
TJ Armstrong is the bassist. Phenomenal player and super nice guy. He was one of the first guys I met when I moved to Nashville!
Wow there’s a lot of Danny Gatton in his playing. Sounds incredible.
Too many people forget about Danny. Absolute monster of a player.
Yes, definitely a lot of Danny Gatton here!
I’m a GIT 88, ATL. Jimmy Herring was my instructor. My friend Blake recorded a lot of Hiland in old hickory outside of Nashville.
Hey dude yeah!!
Michael…when you play your e minor pentatonic lick on high e and b strings…you’re soooo close to SWYBRYD picking…
Incredible stuff JH..love the country with plenty of distortion.
Johnny is a beast of a player and a really nice person.
I completely feel ya about that drummer & bassist. I got about 20 seconds in to this video, and had these three concurrent thoughts
1) _Johhny is a GAWWT dang monster on guitar!_
2) _Who the HELL is that drummer? Man he is driving this whole jam!_
3) _Who the HELL is that bass player? He is so UP on that drummer's kick and snare, it's ridiculous!_
I have always loved the trio format.
Johnny Hiland is how I fall asleep at night dreaming of playing 1/2 of what he does every night. Cleanest player walking, My favorite.
wow I'm lost for words, I have played guitar for 55 years never heard anything like it, has to be top guitarist I've ever heard 😊😊
I agree with all the accolades for Johnny Hiland. 100% Ferocious. Wolverine would have trouble keeping up.
Michael, how fortunate to have taken class with John. Can't wait to see your talk with the man.
Your reaction when the Great Man goes into full-on EVH mode at minute 13 made my day Michael.. Good on you.
For some reason gives me a very "Ten Years After " vibe . . .
Reminiscent of The Hellecasters....worthy of a review= Will Ray, John Jorgenson and Jerry Donahue. A big part of the early 90's for me.
I learned of Johnny hiland about two years ago, great player , hard act to follow! He's a top tier player and will be playing forever, whether it's for five people or 5,000
I agree with u hiland is a freak on guitar a true master, definitely one of the best
Wow Thanks Mike Following him on Spotify now!!!!!
I have seen Johnny live at NAMM. So good!
You’re hilarious!! “What did I telll youuuuuuu” *face in hands* “what did I say in the beginning” 😂
Sweet baby jesus, I think all the greats showed up. If you closed your eyes you would think SRV, EVH, Tom Morrilo, Eric Johnson, Hendrix and maybe Joe Satriani were all on stage with a big 'ol jam session. DAMN!!!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thank you for the kind words
Thanks for this. I love Hiland. Is the interview posted yet? I have been looking for new vids with him and so happy to see that he is well. What a precious human being.
Yes! Link is in the description
Love Johnny and love your analysis.
He's a badass
I grew up listening to the Hank III albums so when I saw him shredding a Kiesel on YT it sounded very familiar. Dude IS awesome...and he will endorse anything. 😅
I love when he puts in some pedal steel licks and bends
this guy is the best . love it !!
Agree these guys with him are monsters along with one master guitar playin dude
