Thank you Rick for reminding us that golf should be fun and we get too uptight about our scores. Just enjoy the moments of exercise, friends, and a good beer on the 19th hole!
Rick, your sheer passion, and love for all things golf: The modern stuff, but also the history, and just the game and everything it can do for you is so much fun to watch, it's contagious. Please keep doing what you do. Awesome.
Nicely done Rick, great to see a smile on the face after another failed up and down ! Sometimes we take our fine sport far too seriously and just savouring the moment of being outside with some fresh air and firendly company is good enough. Anything else is a bonus.
There is something about videos where you go and buy second hand clubs at a cheaper price and go play with them. Awesome video as always, Rick! Cannot wait for the new content!
Seeing good players like you still able to make birdie and par with clubs this ancient is a nice reminder that new expensive clubs aren’t gonna fix my problems
I love this video! When I got into golf last year, I bought a set of Walter Hagen Matrix irons from 1972, bladed, and a Pinseeker driver from 1993, and I hit 130 on my first round. The whole set cost me $50. I had the time of my life! Now I shoot about 92 with my mizuno MP-25’s and Cobra F9 speedback driver in less than a year. That set cost about $800. Crap clubs can be so much fun when you just go out and play! Without those clubs, cheap as they were, I wouldn’t be such an enthusiast. Nothing beats just being outside!
Absolutely right on, I just picked golf back up after not playing for over twenty years( put 3 children through college), I played when I was young with some clubs somebody tossed out, no matter what the score , it is a lot of fun, and I enjoy Ricks videos and i pick up some tips just watching him, he is a excellent golf ambassador.
We've got a low-cost course like that around here, $10 for 9 holes, par 3 on all of them, lots of hills, trees, a creek, a river, and a pond. Absolutely beautiful, especially in fall. It's the only course I've played on. I just started last year, and I'm not ready for Whistling Straits or Blackwolf Run just yet. Maybe after I take some lessons and have a few pints.
Rick this was one of my favourite videos of yours. You genuinely looked to be enjoying yourself which was great to see and we always love your budget stuff!
juneau, alaska, here. 9-holes, par-3 out in the wetlands. unbelievably--unbelievably magnificant views. lose your shots in a salmon spawning creek. i've played all over, but i'm so happy to have my rustic 9-hole home course!
The video I needed to see. I've been trying to justify joining a country club but I can't see myself spending almost $15 k per year potentially logging 100 rounds. My other option is a 9 hole course which would only cost me $3.5 k to log 100 rounds. Yes,more crowded, waiting involved and slower play. Yes, it's about having a good time. Thanks Rick
HI Rick!! So glad we got a chance to meet you while we were on our Tour-de-force golf trip!! Sorry we missed you in St. Andrews, but was an absolute pleasure getting to say hi and chat for a few minutes up at Cruden Bay. Keep up the great work, and next time you are in Pennsylvania looking for a great course - let me know.
This course reminds me of a super fun local course that used to be open around me. 9 holes, double greens and 10usd for 9 holes. Courses like this are awesome for the new golfer to get a feel for the game without breaking the bank
Those irons remind me of the first set i ever bought, second hand First Flight golden eagles for $45. They were great clubs except catching one thin on a cold day.Great video Rick👍
Hey Rick, since the lockdown me and my 2 younger brothers have started playing golf! Your videos have been nothing but phenomenal for us from the club tips to the shot tips! You’ve been a huge bell to us all! These videos are brilliant! Thank yoh so Much because they have helped us a lot! All the best
It’s got to be said, I loved seeing Shiels laughing while playing, talking about having a good time. So many players get so worked up during a round and forget that it is just a game. The whole point is to get out and have a good time.
This was such a great video. That's the one thing I love about golf, is that it doesn't need to be insanely expensive. It's such a great sport that you can have fun no matter what. There's a bunch of little gem courses around where I live, and they stand up to other well maintained courses. All you need is passion and a love for the sport, and anythings possible. Keep up the amazing work Rick!
Visiting Scotland this May, playing three 'low budget' courses: Kinghorn, Eden Course (St Andrews links), Anster. Will be great fun without breaking the bank. In fact, the total of the greenfees for our foursome is only slightly more than 1 round for 1 player at Kingsbarns...😅
One of my fav videos , and just shows the joy of the game and getting out there. The help to my mental health can not be in put into pound notes and that should always be promoted. We only see the 'elite' side to the game , like football, grass roots should always be the way forward.
I started playing golf at about aged 30 and wasn’t sure if it was for me so picked up a full set of Wilson pro staff clubs with bag and trimmings with donnay woods for £1.04!! Unbelievable! Golf is as expensive as you make it but I’d still rather out on the course than doing gardening or housework! 😂⛳️
The funny thing about your channel is I don’t even play golf. I enjoy watching you break all the rules of golf. I believe that you could play golf with 2 clubs, no bag, in a random field with a coffee cup as a hole and you would still have fun.
My wife and I were in Scotland on a DIY golf trip and drew out the ballot to play St. Andrews and loved it. However, we scouted around playing various "unknown" courses and one that we loved that was across the bay was Kilspindie. Loved it! Thanks, Rick. Now, go play Kilspindie.
Probably one of my favorite videos of yours. I think a lot of people fail to realize for most of us, we won’t be scratch golfers or play at a high caliber skill level. Nice seeing pros and great players playing more for fun than anything and just having a good time like the rest of us. Looking forward to break 75 coming back. I’m currently on the hunt to break 80 this year. No luck so far, but have played some of my best golf so far this year so there’s still hope.
What more can you love? Playing at St. Andrews, beautiful weather, classic links wind, cheap equipment and price, awesome attitude and ya get to top it all off with a Guinness at the end. Always appreciate your upbeat and well-mannered attitude, Rick. Reminds me not to take the game too seriously and to just appreciate the moment and take everything in. Any day on the links is a blessing. Top-notch and cheers to another banger, mate! 🍻
Took up golf as a student in St. Andrews, stocked up on pre-owned clubs and started with the Balgove. Good memories!! Cost £35 for student annual membership on the Balgove and the strath 18 hole course next to it, unreal value
THESE ARE MY FAVORITE VIDEOS SHIELSY BABY!!! 😊 THE TRUE GOLF, THE HUMBLE GOLF, THE GOLF WITH THE BEST SMILES AND NICE PINT IN THE CLUBHOUSE. 😊😊 KIND REGARDS BEN FROM N.Z
Rick, watching this, I feel like you came to my tiny, little dump of a town and played my favorite course, all par 3's with a few 4's mixed in. Perfect! Your videos have enthralled my love of golf. Thank you!!!
Great video. Love that you really go out of your way to highlight that the game of gold if for EVERYONE! Finally getting my wife into it and I could not be more excited!
We had a 9 hole course like this near where I went to college. It was a dollar a hole for students after 4pm. Eight of us would play there once a week. So much fun.
Something about those neon golf balls just feels right! I've always played with used crappy balls, but this year finally bought a dozen brand new neon red balls. First day out I hit two into the woods, took a quick peek in and found them in like 5 seconds each time due to the color. Haven't lost one yet in 18 holes. Fingers crossed they last awhile.
You actually look human playing on this course(in the conditions that you had) with clubs that aren’t even yours! I’m humbled seeing you play and have a good laugh about it all. Much respect to you sir!👊🏽
What a beautiful course mate and a lovely Guinness to finish the day.I never play to score I just love to play and if a birdie comes my way I am very happy :)
LOVE this video, this guy has tons of fun just playing golf. Every non-golfer that watch this video wil start playing just the have the same fun as Rick.
Thanks Rick! Your video is perfect timing for me. After being away from the game for 37 years I recently bought some used clubs and today will be my first day on the golf course.
As a beginner in the sport I would agree that it can be quite expensive but because of the equipment more than anything, I stay just down the road from St Andrews in fife and there are a few courses that I enjoy practicing at that are very cheap for a round of gold, sometimes a tenner for a 18 holes.
7:19 great technique you showed once and now do show again unintendedly: how to strike first the ball, then the ground. great. always learning when watching your videos. thanks a lot, Rick! 👍
Hey Rick, I do love cheap golf, and I think you do too. Always fun to play the big courses but always a challenge and fun to play what I call the cow pastures, even though that course looked great.
I remember the course fondly. My lad won the HSBC Wee Wonders playing there. He was 7 years old and shot 26 and 28 with 30 mile an hour winds. He played in the finals all 6 years he was eligible - always great fun.
@Rick you should do a "This vs That", "Side by Side", "These vs. Those" segment when you play with bargin clubs AND also with your regular clubs. One-shot each per hole. It would be a great comparison. Great content as always, great to see you playing golf again now that the weather is appropriate.
Raw video Rick clubs and course that you have never played on or with before. Totally out of comfort zone. Enjoyed watching. Like you said sometimes the score doesn’t matter. If you are having a great game with your mates enjoy it. Well done.
Great video Rick! There are those rounds where it really is about having a good time and not worrying about the score. Playing a round at St. Andrews for less than £65 all in, including equipment is crazy!
Great video Rick, reminding us all that you don't have to take our sport to seriously. For those in the south, try a round at Stapleford Abbot's, 18 hole championship course, under new owners now £18.00, used to be £35 I believe. Don't bother in the winter, doesn't drain well, but in the summer or drier months should be fantastic.
On of the greatest Videos you ever Made! Ideal, weither, Golf course, equipment and your smile the hole round makes it unique and and also me a bis, neverending smile in my Face. Thx for the happiness i got of the Video! !! :-))))
Hey Rick those Henry Cotton irons are the same as the ones I learned to play with as a teenager. We had 2-10 iron and my brother and me used to split them odds and evens. Like you say they were difficult to hit and I put my consistent ball striking down to using them as i learned to play.
Great video, never knew about that wee course in St Andrews. More memorabilia for the Jigger Inn to display. I'm sure some of the overseas subscribers that are coming over to the Open this year will pop in to see them.
You should try the one I go to. Wolds Way, Sherburn, North Yorkshire. £5 for 18 holes (9 holes twice) with free club hire. It is literally an honesty box. The greens are annoying at this time of year as we aren't getting much rain. It's As a beginner, it's all I can ask for really. I have always wondered how a pro would do on there as some of the greens are very tough in terms of hills and most fairways have almost no forgiveness as out of bounds is just to the side of them.
LOADS of videos filmed and coming!!!!
Let’s go!!!
Yes please. More videos :)
You should make a video most expensive golf course and most expensive clubs
This is how I golf every game thanks for the videos
Rick, come play a round with me before my wedding in October!

there have been times I couldn't have made it 2 holes 🥺
Need 10 balls to be on the safe side

lol I was thinking the same thing! I would be picking up a few more especially with those irons lol.
Those 3 balls are usually good enough for the first 2 or so holes...
Thank you Rick for reminding us that golf should be fun and we get too uptight about our scores. Just enjoy the moments of exercise, friends, and a good beer on the 19th hole!
beautifully said

Thanks so much Lucas for the nice comment 🙌
The Balgove course is one of the reasons I fell in love with golf - great memories playing there with my Dad and Grandpa when I was a kid!

Think of it as getting even more value for money for that £8 green fee - more golf strokes played!
@@craftsmanwoodturner that's what I say when I'm playing rubbish, at least I'm getting more golf for my money 😂
Rick's best shot of the entire round is when he tossed the scorecard at the Pub! Perfect!

well you just gave yourself a good business idea...
Yeah, people want crazy prices for used gear on gumtree. New price, unless it's vintage. I got a decent old set for $50 from a garage sale by luck.
Hopefully one that doesn't mug you off for £50.
Those clubs he got are destined for the dump.
