- Welcome to Day 3 of Quiltmas 2023!! Quiltmas is a collaboration with 12 UA-cam quilters from around the world. This year, we exchanged a fat quarter of Xmas fabric and were challenged to make a Christmas-themed project.
For my contribution, I designed this quick and easy-to-make lap-sized Christmas quilt with the most amazing cuddly fleece backing, and you can win it!

I love the quilt .. I will be making one for sure .. just maybe a different technique with same outcome .. I am confused about your "notion" .. it looks like quite a few others are also .. maybe you could reply to all of us who didn't get it or have one of the other quilters mention it on their videos .. wouldn't be fair to miss out on a chance to win one of the quilts because it wasn't clear what your secret notion was .. anyway, thanks for the video, it was most entertaining
Thank you, I think you could make this in a few different ways with strips and different layouts to make something really fun.
I thought my notion was really obvious but seems I was being clear as mad when I re-watched it :-) The notion was masking/painters tape. Good luck with the competition.

Where did you get your binding tool, I am from Independence Missouri and Colorado, yet I have never seen 1 like it?

Okay. Believe me. I have carefully studied the very obvious hints in your video that point out an object that is your secret word. Is it an embroidery hoop, a magnifying glass, or a thread cutter of some sort I have never seen before. I sew and quilt every day, and I have actively sewn for the past 60 years. Sadly, I do not know your secret word. Perhaps you could make it a little MORE obvious by doppelganger it for me. 😊😂😅 I love that you described all your errors and frustrations. We can all relate.
Tom your quilt is adorable and so is your accent, just the most adorable. I bet butter just melts when stand to close.

Oh my gosh, Tom! I absolutely love this quilt and the three-step-zigzag you used. I´m hoping you´ll do a ¨This Is How You Quilt It¨ video demonstrating it. It´s perfect! I´m so glad no teddy bears were harmed during the making of this quilt. And a very Merry Christmas to you!

Hi Tom, Ithink you need to pack those lil mischievous elves back up to Santa 😅 It looks like they got smart and gave yo. This quilt came out fabulously! I readout like yr at you showcased the fabrics. Instead of chopping them up they are highlighted. Bravo!! Great call on bit quilting thru them as well. And the green boarder.. Wowzers, it really is a fantabulous ( fantastically fabulous) frame. Almost as if it was made just for this quilt. Don'tcha just love it when that happens 🤩Merry Christmas to you. Thank you, Tom, for showing all the different fabrics. Your quilt is beautiful! I love it. Glad you took those darn Christmas elves to school! The quilting is the perfect choice. Is that a quilt stitch on computerized maching or is it a technique? The stripey binding is perfect! Can’t wait to see it completely done.
Thanks for the love and for joining in Quiltmas. The stitch is computerised but you could probably doing this manually with quilting technique, might take a while.
First time watching you, loved it…you quilt is awesome…❤️…love the stitching, I just have a basic machine, what machine are you using that does that stitch or do you just do it yourself with a quilting motion???
Thank you so much for watching! It's a Bernina 770QE but I think most machines have it. I have a basic machine as well and it's right next to the normal zigzag on the dial. Hope that helps!
Thanks for your video, I looked for the article you said you friend showed the 3 step zigzag and I cant find it. Will you share the name?
It wasn't the zigzag he was sharing. It was a Xmas quilt pattern; look at the Xmas Quilt Edition #131 (the one with the free binding tool) for Merry and Bright by Augusto Garcia on page 35
I sure wish you would say what your item is. I watched this multiple times and blew up that spot. Is it masking tape or the thing behind it?
It's masking/painters tape. We weren't supposed to say what it was, it was meant to be shown on screen. Sorry if it wasn't clear enough.

I believe the tape in the video is Diagonal Seam Tape. It is in Tom's list of favourite quilting products.
It's actually masking/paintes tape. I thought I had made it quite obvious, but looking at it again it wasn't as obvious as I thought :-)

I am loving this quiltmas project. I am discovering quilters and content creators that I never knew. I think your fabric submission was so gorgeous! I see no issue using that beauty and I agree that it goes well with it not being the traditional red, green, or gold. I hate to admit that I laughed at your pain in the process because I have been there and it stinks, so I completely understand you running off to the cupboard for a cry. Your project turned out nice. I think your quilt turned out to be a story of friendship and sheer determination. Your choice of the quilting stitch brings the fabrics into focus. I love your choice of the white background fabric to make your fabric blocks come front and center and into focus. At first, I thought the roll of tape was being placed behind you by the elves as a bit of mirth and merriment. Now I know it was you putting the roll of tape on the desk as part of the contest. I so appreciate your honesty. I'm pattern dyslexic so I often do things backwards. It's like sew....rip...repeat. The quilt is beautiful. I love that people are using decorative stitches for quilting. It makes it so much more fun.

I am quite used to things going wrong. My favourite quilting thing to do is sew blocks upside down. My Quiltmas announcement video backdrop has a upside down block LOL Oh well :-)
Toss the cuddle fabric in the dryer and it all goes into the filter that takes a few seconds to clean off

Thanks for your response. I have only been piecing blocks and hand tying and not machine quilting but have seen other creators using tape to guide their quilting designs. Anxious to see complete reveal. I will try your layout idea with my extra holiday fabric pieces.

Wonderful way to use a great bunch of different fabrics - love the outcome! Also, thank you for the quilting elf story - it sounds like some of mine have gone on holiday to visit you, so this is my chance to sew without having to unpick seams! Definitely going to try that 3 step zigzag, it looks great!
Sew happy to meet you, love the process and the quilt. Had to laugh when you talked about "hoovering", I had the same experience the first time I used that fleece, learned a lot from it.

I love your layout of the fabrics the sashing color as well as the red backing fabric. A beautiful quilt to cuddle up with! I have made a few small quilted items, but never a big one as I was not sure of how to do the actual quilting. Love how you used the simple stitches to quilt with.

Hello, first time watching your videos. I am sorry to say my eyesight is not good and I really don't know what your secret item is. All the other videos I have watched so far say a secret word and then tell you the secret word. I wish this video would have done the same thing.
One thing I do when sewing (quilts and everything else) is that I put the pins in with the point going towards the seam to be sewn. It normally helps me to make sure the pieces get sewn correctly.
It's one of my favorite stitches I use for attaching bindings on quilts.
