'In The Hall of The Mountain king' is actually a musical piece from the 1867 five-act play 'Peer Gynt,' by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen. Both it and another famous instrumental piece from the same play 'Morning' (which you will also instantly recognise as soon as you hear it) were composed by Edvard Grieg. But yeah, Voiceplay and Elizabeth KILLED this!
“What note was that?!” It was a C#1 sub. And Geoff hit the majority of the F#1’s (first low note) in chest voice. 😮 Also, you’re one of the first reactors that has noticed the masks and correctly connected them to Nightmare Before Christmas, specifically their Kidnap the Sandy Claws video.
I just binge watched a lot of your reactions to Voiceplay and your commentary is always leveled and intelligent, but I love how you keep every little reaction. You are expressive and it makes the whole thing very enjoyable. Have to admit, your face every time Geoff comes in at the beginning with a bomb is one of the best part of your reactions! Keep reacting man, your humor is def needed in the reactors world!
Love watching you enjoy their shenanigans. Only VoicePlay would think about taking a classical piece like this, turning it inside out and upside down and adding all the insanity. Cesar is so mischievous - you just know he is up to no good. It’s so funny how they all want to prank Layne. At the end, just before he deploys his carrot bomb, his movements are so crazed. Eli is a bit terrifying in this. And Elizabeth! What a terrific counterpoint to Geoff’s crazy low bum bum bums!
Great reaction as usual. This is their best. My favorite. I listen to it alot. Especially when I'm laying down resting. Loop on. Headphones on high. And yes. She's closed. It is a whole different experience. You should listen to the 2 in the credits talking about merchandise. They are hilarious too. Liz is a very sweet lady. I've talked to her in both Facebook and the premiere. She said she's the "Underworld Goddess" 😄 . She even hashtaged herself as that on here lol Voiceplay has used her in a couple past videos as voiceover when they have super high notes. So we've heard her but not seen her until now. Ok. I've rambled enough. Time to put lay down and listen to this on repeat. Later Dave😁
The Norwegian composer Grieg wrote the original orchestral music for part of his Peer Gynt Suite - definitely genius. This is a great mix of fun plus excellent vocals and musicality. Enjoyed the reaction.
They had the masks of Lock, Stock and Barrel for the Nightmare before Christmas. You also hear her on the Frozen II medley and The Greatest Showman video. And of course the Just Sing video.
Henrik Ibsen's 1867 play Peer Gynt. This is where this music from. I had to geek out and look this up. Geoff hit another B0 according to QoFyReacts. This is Layne's arrangement so he worked in the magic carrot at the end. This is at PattyCake Productions and Tony made Layne cut down real trees and drag them into the studio. Love that they used the masks from Kidnap The Sandy Claws.
You got it!! The melody is repetitive and builds throughout the piece and they played with the tempo, and style of each segment to make this one a real treat for the ears, although apparently, they were all playing tricks on poor Layne during the video! Happy (upcoming) October Birthday, from another October celebrant!! Libra or Scorpio? Either way, we have the bestest month of the year to be born in!! As always, you gave a well thought out review of their efforts, and I appreciate the thought you put into all your reactions, which are becoming more analyses of late. BTW, you may have heard Elizabeth as an off camera additional voice on "Slushy", VP's Frozen II Medley. She has done high notes for a few of their videos and contributed to "Just Sing" as well!! 🕷🕸🎃🎉
All the various things getting tossed into the pot and changing what it does. Love Layne's carrot and burpboxing. So much fun done with one of my favorite melodies of all time.
Geoff said that a couple days after filming he ran into their makeup artist Rick. Rick said Geoff's looked like a little kid designed his.... Let's see. Let's give him a long chin, yellow hair, and horns. Fur all over his body with blue skin and horns and but nose.
Great reaction as always, was looking forward to this! So glad we got to see Elizabeth featured, she has such an amazing voice. Layne really went the extra mile for this, he even cut down the trees and dragged them in and they add so much to the set.
Thank you for another great reaction to Voice Play. Take notice how the original symphony orchestra music & Voice Play mimicks the music as it goes from fast to slow. It is an original repetitive piece of music & Voice Play made it fun. Take notice that they all have horns in this one. Nobody does Halloween scarry better than Voice Play. They are total geniuses. I bet Eli & Geoff could sing opera.
Great reaction as always, Dave!! Geoff definitely had a wonderful bass line in this, but you and I definitely have “bass ears.” Some pretty amazing vocals were coming out of everybody else in this as well. Eli sounds almost operatic in spots, and I think that’s Cesar’s Sméagol/Gollum voice around the credits. And then we get so much from Layne as well, LOTS of vocals, as well as incredible vocal percussion. Then stack in Liz-some of those notes sound very Queen of the Night to me, and in character voice! I’m glad they’re still going all out for videos-I was a little worried they might be pulling back a bit because they’re back to doing live gigs.
I absolutely love how many different kinds of music you react to. I may have found you because of your anime rap reactions, but I subscribed when I saw that you also reacted to people like VoicePlay and Jonathan Young. Keep up the amazing work, Dave.
VoicePlay have a Halloween one in the making currently and Geoff has an absolute belter nearly ready., patrons got to see the early release version. You will love it. I don't know yet what VP is doing yet.
It's only mid september; their halloween stuff is their most popular. I'm hoping/semi-expecting that we'll see another one from VP, probably arranged by Geoff since this one was Layne's, AND one from Geoff's personal channel. Fingers crossed. (Not counting the minis, VP released 4 full performances last year between 9/17 & 10/15, so 2 this year isn't too much to hope for.)
Hey, me too! Fall is my favorite and my birthday is in October! I have a Halloween theme every year and I'll never get tired of it! We decorate all out on the first of the month so we can enjoy it! Also, fall means football so it's like all good stuff for us October babies! 😜😂
Yeah, In the Hall of the Mountain King is one of those pieces that absolutely everyone has heard and will recognize as familiar, even though most of them don't know the title. It's the "nope, never heard of it [first six notes] Oh THAT song, why didn't you say so" effect. Others include Morning Mood, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Rondo Alla Turca, Blue Danube, Claire de Lune, Barber of Seville, Short Round's Theme, Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra, Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld, Habanera from Carmen, Copland's version of Simple Gifts, Piano Sonata No. 2 in b flat minor op. 35 movement 3, Mozart's Symphony No. 40, the choral theme with the title lyrics from the end of Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 12 and Sonata Op. 28 No. 15, the seventh movement from Bach's orchestral suite No. 2 in b minor (wow, I wonder why nobody remembers the names of these), the prelude to the Partita No. 3 in E, Hungarian Dance No. 5 in f sharp minor, Schickele's Unbegun Symphony (particularly the fourth movement), and that one piece by Strauss. Honorable mention to Londonderry Air, which everybody knows under the various titles that belong to various sets of lyrics that have been sung to it. Also Hoe-Down from the Rodeo suite, which an entire generation knows under the title of an advertising campaign that used it.
I love your reaction and I love VOICEPLAY. They are by far my favorite acapella group. Coz your reactions are so cool and so enthusiastic, so refresing, and funny, you have a new subscriber from Martinique (a french caraibean island) Sorry for my bad english !!!
Its easily recognizable theme has helped it attain iconic status in popular culture, where it has been arranged by many artists (see Grieg's music in popular culture). The English translation of the name is not literal. Dovre is a mountainous region in Norway, and "gubbe" translates into (old) man or husband.
can i say how much i am getting sonic the hedgehog sega game vibes when geoff is pouring in his contents from the box, that hit like a blast from the past
All the masks in the woods, ARE the masks from their cover of Kidnap the Sandy Claws.......did you get Spike Jones and the City Slicker vibes, near the end of the piece.....>^^< You HAVE heard Elizabeth before, and if you look closely during their cover of Just Sing.......she appears there too.
The lyrics should be "This song just keeps speeding up Speeding up, Speeding up. This song just keeps speeding up Until we all fall down." Try it - it works
Slay him! The Christian man's son has seduced the fairest maid of the Mountain King! A troll-imp:May I hack him on the fingers? Another troll-imp: May I tug him by the hair? A troll-maiden:Hu, hey, let me bite him in the haunches! A troll-witch with a ladle: Shall he be boiled into soup and broth? Another troll-witch, with a butcher knife: Shall he roast on a spit or be browned in a stewpan? The Mountain King:Ice water to your blood!

Hahaha You definitely have the pipes for one! Great job!
I agree with Dave you should be in opera
I thought maybe I had seen you (Elizabeth) in the Just Sing video. Had to go back and rewatch that, and sure enough!!!! Great job.
@@jeraldbennett9289 I believe she was the soprano bgv in the Frozen 2 medley as well
I thought you wee an opera singer too

The makeup reminds me of that movie Legend. This was wonderfully entertaining.

Only Voiceplay would take an entirely instrumental piece and do it as a comedy acapella.

Layne loves the carrot thing joke. He has it in several videos.
There was an interesting video put out yesterday about the history of the carrot. It's hilarious
Huldra Draco is a VP Patreon member with a YT channel. She just posted a video about Layne and carrots. Funny stuff.
