Just found this video. I'm 10 wks post dominant side total shoulder. Found your other posts pre-op. I guess I didn't look hard enough. Recommended them to my surgeon. Your videos are extremely well done and helpful. I live alone so being able to finally groom my hair without asking friends for shampoo help is greatly appreciated. Bless you.
Thank you so much! My wife is having shoulder surgery and has been trying to teach me how to put her hair in a pony tail. Apparently, I rip it out by the roots, she's screaming and we both were ending up frustrated. This is awesome!
This is so true ! I was trying to teach my husband to put my hair in a pony tail: he has two left hands and can’t grip my hair together and we both ended up being mad at each other. He has no clue! I have to ask my neighbor to help me . Very frustrating ! Now I will try to do it myself.
Home health nurse here and I'll be having non-dominant and then dominant shoulder replacement. I watched all your videos and you really did a nice job with these - just wanted to say thank you!!!
An old male with long hair and shoulder reconstruction tomorrow. My sons have taught the offenders that ripping my arm from my shoulder is not wise. We are peaceful men but things have to be done. Your tips have taught me. Thanks.
The shoelace worked easiest for me! I’m 73 years old, and have just for the first time in my life grown out my bangs, but they are not long enough to be completely manageable yet. I’m having left shoulder replacement soon. This ponytail with the shoelace is awesome! Once the ponytails in, then I can use a clip to get my bangs pulled back. My hair is also to the middle of my back and I’m thankful to find a style that doesn’t make me want to cut my hair every other day into a pixie!😂😂😂 Thanks so much for the video!
I'm 5 weeks post-op after rotator cuff surgery on my dominant side. I'm growing my hair to donate--it's past my tailbone--and one of the things I miss the most is being able to braid my hair or put it in a bun to keep the ends from getting damaged and breaking off. I've had my physical therapist and a barista at my local Starbucks braid it for me a couple times. 😂 i tried your tip about the rubber band, but I just couldn't get all the hair through without it ending up a mess. I already used a shampoo bar before surgery, but it has been really helpful post-op. I start lathering my hair with the bar, then use one of those scalp massagers to get a nice lather. They're great for travel, too--no worries about spilling or getting through security at the airport! Thanks for another helpful video!
I’m getting ready for rotator cuff surgery today I tried one handed hair care it was a major fail. Thank you for this real life information I feel more confident that my hair won’t be a total hot mess lol. I’m so happy I found your tips before this surgery,Thank you!
You are AMAZING! I'm preparing for rotator cuff surgery on my dominant hand, and the hair dryer tip is the BEST. It never even crossed my mind that there might be a clamp out there! THANK YOU for your tips!
Bless you bless you,,BLESS you! I’ve followed your suggestions following my recent RC surgery and it has helped so very much. Don’t know what I would have done otherwise. I do have a tip on hair management. I have long hair, which I usually wear up. I twist it up with one hand and lean forward, pressing my head against the wall, while slipping a hair elastic from my spread fingers, to my hair. It works
Having dominant right sided rotator cuff repair in two weeks and have started watching your videos. Appreciate all the clever ways to make things work!
Thank you so much for doing these videos. I've watched some of them several times. It's a good feeling to be prepared and help make this stressful period be as frustration-free as possible!
Your videos are priceless! One big THANK YOU! From me. I have bilateral hips and knees replaced and cervical fusion. I was just told I need dominant side total shoulder replacement. Your videos are super practical and giving me hope for a less complicated recovery. ❤
Thank you so much! Had a severe rotator cuff tear in my dominant arm. I have a huge mess of long curly hair and I never go out without makeup. I've been crying tears of frustration every day since my fall. THANK YOU for these tips!!!! Will allow me to at least, not look like a crazy woman!!!
I’ve had RA for 45 long years and am facing replacements of left shoulder and left elbow in the coming months. Thank you so much for your very helpful and often ingenious demonstrations for self care! Perhaps it’s not for everyone, but I use my mouth quite a bit to stabilize loosely tightened screw top lids and turn the container part with the non operated hand. Another way is if the jar lid is too big for my mouth or even my hand, I’ll sit down and stabilize the jar part between my knees and then turn the lid with my non-operated hand. Of course the whole family helps out by barely tightening anything I may need in the fridge or bathrooms. One thing that still stumps me though, is applying deodorant to the non-operated armpit when the other arm or hand not functional. I have discovered that gel antiperspirants glide on MUCH easier than solids which helps immensely, but with one arm immobilized, how do you tackle applying it?
Some are able to make the same arm application work by holding the deodorant in the same hand your applying on, but it requires some flexibility. I’ve made several deodorant long handled holders using either cheap shoe horns and strong Velcro or even gorilla glue. The long handle makes it possible to reach using the surgical side (make sure your aloud to hold light things in the hand) or even the non surgical side so you can reach.
Thank you so much for this video. I had wrist and elbow surgery in my dominant hand and was struggling on getting my grooming done so I could be independent. Most people said it didn’t matter just couldn’t bear it until you can use your hand again nobody cares what you look like but I do thank you.
Great tips. Thank you. My dominant arm is believed to be torn. Waiting for my MRI. I’m definitely nervous about not being able to use this arm for a long period of time, if surgery is needed. My doctor is quite sure that I will need it based on clinical tests. Your tips are very helpful for early preparations.
Thank you for all of your great ideas! I will be having right arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery on April 3 and I wish you could show more ideas with the right shoulder issues. Thanks again.❤
Thanks very much for sharing these are very helpful strategies! I will have a keyhole shoulder surgery soon to ckear wear and tear, so I am just wondering how long does it usually take when one will not be able to use another hand/arm? Many thanks 🙏
Thanks so much for this video! I’m about to have shoulder surgery (dominant side too) and have long hair- crazy I know, but my main concern is how to wash it!! Any tips on sleeping positions post surgery? Thanks so much
wow where was this very helpful information when i fell last month? its still painful but not as bad as it was, i am managing my shitty looking pony tail now. this is great to know.
Do u have a video on how to wash long hair about your length of hair? Whenever I go to the states, I must check out the Dollar Store because it seems to be a brilliant store to people in the USA . I’m in Ireland and was worried about my hair but I’ll try your advice. I’m just not sure how I’ll go about really washing my hair with my broken arm.
Begging to get my curly mop into a pony tail has put care disparity into perspective. Two girls raised and somehow nobody can manage it for poor one arm momma. Can't wait until I can do a smooth snug pony for myself again. I know I'm fussy but I'm frustrated with the damage. I'll try the tiny elastics.
Hey Lindsey, I really appreciate all your helpful tips! I have short hair that will dry itself, but because I have arthritis and restricted ROM in my “good” shoulder, I can’t reach my whole head. Washing one side of my hair and brushing there, especially in the back, is just not working. Do you have any suggestions? Do you think that gooseneck clamp would work with a hairbrush?
I noticed you are using your right hand as the left shoulder is the one with the so called surgery. I am mostly left handed and that’s the shoulder that is torn. I eat left handed ,brush my teeth and hair left handed and defiantly use the restroom left handed. Any suggestions? Thanks 😊
It is definitely more challenging working with your non-dominant hand! There are no magical tricks or tools that make it a ton easier. Be prepared to have to take a little extra time and be kind to yourself and ask for help (if possible). You will be surprised how much your non- dominant hand can learn with repetition!
I have the same issue coming up but surgery on my right dominant arm. I'm freaking out. These are helping a bit. Been practicing with left hand and now that shoulder starting to hurt. No way will I be able to do that hair thing with my left hand.
Washing your armpits will require a long handled sponge for your non-surgical side and a thin washcloth slide through your surgical armpit. I am glad you asked because I definitely should have included this in the video!
That was my question too, seems like the most important, most difficult tasks. I wonder if I'll be able to lift my arm up enough. I'd be afraid to rest my arm on anything in the shower in case I have even a small slip. Maybe I can pull up on the slang. I'm already using a sponge on a stick, pre-op. I've noticed even the extra tall deodorant stick container is easier than a short one. I think I'll be taping deodorant container to a stick.
I'm very scared I broke my shoulder and split the ball inside in half..I'm scared to get surgery .I need to see the specialist yet and I can't comb my hair since it happened and I don't have any family to help.
how do you deal with being a passenger in a car and using a seat belt after reverse-shoulder-replacement surgery? It will press against the right shoulder that will be operated on.
Unfortunately, this is impossible to do with my thick hair. Trying the first way my fingers hurt so much and I can't manage to pull hair out with just two fingers 😟. The second one seems unsafe because you can slip in a wet bathroom plus I am not allowed to drill holes in a wall in the place I am renting. This scares me because I have a very long hair 😳

Thank you for this. I have been trying to figure out how to do a ponytail for weeks, these tips made it possible!
Awesome! So glad I could help!
