    Hi Jennifer! I really appreciate you brought up (touched?) this topic. You're right, we should discuss it carefully. Who becomes more conservative and wants to close the borders for immigrants? The recent asylum seeker who got the refugee status or became green card holder! In short terms an amount of immigrants shouldn't be more than an amount of people the pot can melt without spoiling the society of country people want to live and work. The best saying is "When in Rome do what Romans do." The immigrants shouldn't establish rules of their countries in the new country they came in. They should adapt (change their own mind more), than attempts to change the rules of the new country. Otherwise the new country will become more as the past country of refugees they ran away. Step by step the local people will take the best your customs if they like it (but that usually happens later on).

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому

      Hello Serzhan. You seem to have a balanced view on the issue. Yes, logically a country must consider how to accept refugees and help them partly based on what resources are available. I think you wisely recognize that the process of assimilation and acceptance takes time in many cases. Thank you for contributing to the discussion.

    Hi there. This is really a tough topic to debate about. I was born in Saudi Arabia, but raised in Egypt. However, I don't really like living in Egypt because of the ruling regime and the deteriorating economic system. In my humble opinion, each country has the right to control who should get its citizenship and who shouldn't. Also, it would be great if each country applies the principle of reciprocity in treating other countries.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому +1

      I think as the world becomes more and more global, we have to consider how to facilitate travel and migration between countries. However, there has to be some degree of regulation, right? The big debate is how to set up laws that create order and that are fair and reasonable. I'd add that citizenship even for those born in a country comes with responsibility, and the rights and privileges of citizenship should be properly valued. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому +1

      Some argue that concepts like ethnicity and nationality are self-formed, regardless of what a document states. If I began to live in another country, I'd still be American, but I'd also likely take on some new views and values and also identify with the new culture. But one's roots are always at our core, I think.

      One place to practice is on my community tab on Kiki. I can't offer corrections, but the process of writing is still useful. Gain comfort expressing your ideas in English. Writing gives you more time to think than speaking does. The familiarity with vocabulary and grammar will grow if you write, read, and listen to English regularly. My views are liberal when it comes to immigration. I support all undocumented Americans, currently in America, in their quest for legal citizenship. I believe they are over eleven million of them. Deportation must still be an option for America to deploy in certain circumstances though. A country without laws and borders is not a country at all.
    The big problem seems to be at this southern border with Mexico. There is the problem;; Mexico. Mexico is in the main a third world country; a country that pays it workers slave-labor wages, a country where poverty is rife.. Who wouldn't want to flee poverty?
    So, pressure needs to be put on Mexico to turn this reality around. Mexican citizens fleeing Mexico is a Mexican problem also. It is up to Mexico to improve their own security at the southern border. Those fleeing the life of poverty must be treated humanely and with respect though. Safe havens need to be created at the border and families must be kept together. Charities could also help out a bit more with helping improve conditions at those detention camps. .
    It's funny how we never hear about people wanting to flee America for a better life in Mexico. So, addressing the route of the problem could well be the answer. I strongly supported the high trade tariffs that were proposed for the American companies who moved to Mexico to save themselves millions. If they can't pay their Mexican employees a decent wage, then they can pay in other ways. Money gained in such taxes could be used for humanitarian work at the southern border.
    I understand that it isn't just Mexico where people are fleeing from. Every country could do with focusing on becoming more prosperous and on looking after its people. This would go someway to easing the issue of economic migration.
    Asylum Seekers:
    All peaceful countries have to shoulder the responsibility of asylum. America isn't the only developed nation in the world. There are hundreds of countries that come under the category of peaceful. We must all do our bit to help out there.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому +1

      You make points worth considering. I appreciate your attention not just to the problem, but to the source(s). What is causing the present influx? What can be done to address those reasons? Is this an international crisis we can work on together? When should one country or a group of countries intervene in the affairs of another nation? Economics are also complicated. Are U.S. companies at fault for leaving the U.S.? For creating jobs elsewhere? For lowering labor costs in order to keep production costs and prices low? Is the American consumer at fault to some degree as well? Immigration is a web of issues. Thank you for sharing your honest views.

    ❤️Hi Jennifer. It's good information about US immigration policy and law. Good to know it! Actually, my grandfather could be an American, if he still will be alive. After the WW2 he had received the Adaption (called "Verabschiedung") for serving in the US army at the end of the war. I still wonder when I was a refugee in Italy if this would be transformable to me?
    However, we had chosen the other country, because of the relatives and the application went through in the first category, in the first interview, so after that, I couldn't change anything.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому

      How interesting! Yes, I imagine if your grandfather had chosen to settle in the U.S., you'd be an American today. As I understand, there are still paths to citizenship today for foreigners who serve in the U.S. Army. Italy has a rich history and culture. I'm sure there are benefits to living there, too.

    So interesting!! About the definition of ethnicity and nationality in a very precise and simple way to explain it. I came to know about your channel in a english class the teacher played a couple videos in her class . She is american but she is a teacher in another country. !!! I was living at the US for long 17 years but once trump was elected I decided to leave for my immigrant status. Sad, i lived most of my life in the US and still considered US my home in my heart.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому

      Thank you for watching and commenting. I think ethnicity is a lot of things. Maybe an official document like a passport can state one thing, but you can identify yourself in your heart as you wish. Being "American" is a mindset and a set of values. Just like someone in, say, Japan or France has their way of looking at the world and their set of values. Those are our cultural differences. I like to think that, for the majority of people in the world, there's more that unites us than divides us.

    It's a tough sittuation! Imigrats are important for economy and culture of every country, but I guess main effort should be to support imigrants to have a legaly entrance, I think the only exception should be refugees because they have an humanity urgency.

    Hi Jennifer, this is a very interesting and complicated topic.
    There are many points I would like to talk about.
    Unfortunately, the world is divided into three categories and people from the first one can go wherever they want and they are welcome, and people from the second one may face some challenges, but people from the third class are not welcome at all.
    Talking about racism I think it is so silly to say that one race is better than the other one , we all complete each other and our main purpose is to make this earth a better place to live in.
    my country throughout its long history was occupied by Macedonians, Roman, Persians and others, so it is so hard to determine what is my ethnicity, you can say I'm from the Mediterranean sea.
    I think each country has the right to allow and deny others from entering its territories, in the same time, this country doesn't have the right to interfere in other countries' business and here is the problem.
    I don't want to be specific but I think you know what I mean.
    People seeking asylum in rich countries come from countries that are looted from those rich countries.
    When I was a child I always dreamed of travelling around the world especially the US but after growing up I knew how difficult or even impossible it is.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому +3

      Hi. I had just typed a reply and then it disappeared! Let me try to recall what I had written.
      First, thank you for watching the video. Yes, I understand your point about a country maintaining control within and not interfering outside of it. I thank you for your honest thoughts. In so many ways, the world breaks down into different categories. We belong to more than one, though. Some labels are not to our advantage. Some labels hurt. Some categories create limitations, but I like the idea that sometimes we can break out of a category and wear the label we want. I didn't go into too much detail in the video, but in somewhat similar ways my husband (Russian) and my father (Filipino) broke a few barriers to create a life here in the U.S. In the end, no matter where you are, you can be part of that human tapestry. I like how you described it: "We all complete each other and our main purpose is to make this earth a better place to live in." Well said. You have an honest heart and a strong mind. Thanks again for expressing your thoughts here.
      (Very small correction: "At the same time" is more standard than "in the same time.")

    Hello Jennifer!
    By the way,what about studying and getting scholarship?How can someone become an exchange student in the U.S?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 років тому

      Foreigners can come to the U.S. on a student visa. There are requirements in order to receive it and keep it. One problem is that some try to overstay their visas. If the visa expires, you must return to your home country. High schools sometimes have programs with schools abroad. They organize official exchanges.

      You think? :) Well, just keep in mind that I may mention ideas and proposals in my current issue videos, but those mentions aren't necessarily to be understood as endorsements. I try to be tolerant, open-minded, and respectful. I'm proud to live in a neighborhood with both conservatives and liberals. Somehow we live together in peace.
