Music by Farya Faraji. This is not only a follow up to the 30 minute of music I uploaded two years ago, this one being historically accurate compared to the previous one which took some liberties for entertainment purposes, but more importantly, this will now serve as the main resource for the sound of the Ancient Greek genera (types of melodies or modes) that I will discuss in my different educational videos, and this video will serve as a permanent resource that can be consulted at any time for audio examples of the different Ancient Greek genera. All the music heard here is simply improvisations in all of the main, attested modes of Ancient Greek music as given to us by Aristoxenus in the Hellenistic Era, using period instruments. The first improvisations are in the diatonic genus, then follows the enharmonic genus, followed finally by the chromatic genus, most tuned using Pythagorean ratios although Equal Temperament had to be used at some points, but the difference isn’t dramatic for a general understanding of the soundscape. Each improvisation is demarcated from the others with the name of the mode, its genus, and the instruments used. Other than serving as relaxing music, this video will hopefully introduce many to the general melodic, modal and tetrachordal soundscape of Ancient Greek music. 00:00 Diatonic Lydian - Lyre 05:00 Diatonic Mixolydian - Lyre 10:30 Diatonic Dorian - Pandoura 15:52 Diatonic Dorian - Pandoura 21:10 Diatonic Hypodorian - Lyre 26:36 Diatonic Hypolydian - Lyre 32:36 Diatonic Phrygian - Lyre and pan flute 38:04 Enharmonic Dorian - Lyre 43:00 Enharmonic Phrygian - Lyre 48:14 Enharmonic Lydian - Lyre 53:46 Enharmonic Mixolydian - Lyre 59:08 Enharmonic Hypodorian - Lyre 1:04:39 Enharmonic Hypohprygian - Lyre 01:07:54 Enharmonic Hypolydian - Lyre 01:13:25 Chromatic Dorian - Lyre 01:19:08 Chromatic Phrygian - Lyre and pan flute 01:24:30 Chromatic Lydian - Lyre 01:30:00 Chromatic Mixolydian - Lyre and pan flute 01:35:32 Chromatic Hypodorian - Lyre 01:41:24 Chromatic Hypophrygian - Pan flute 01:46:40 Chromatic Hypolydian - Lyre 01:51:20 Free Improvisation
Are you Greek or of Greek origin? Perhaps Italian? You look Mediterrenean White! Simmilar to me, same eyes hair color and somewhat hairy arms! Edit: I noticed that you look Iranic or of some Iranian group as well it is hard to determent!
By the time I finished this latest evocative piece by Farya, Athens would lose her empire to Sparta's dominance after the disastrous Sicilian expedition; Epaminondas would end Sparta's reputation of infantry invincibility; and, Philip II of Macedon would end the era of Classical Greek city-states with world-spanning Hellenism following Alexander's exploits.
My boy added the cicadas!! My family is going back to Greece in September for a few weeks and this gets me pumped even more We got the unbelievably epic Battle at Niniveh and now this. This is perfect for just adding to the background, sipping Greek coffee with reading a good book. You're a hidden gem on UA-cam, man.
I can't believe the madlad actually teleported back in time to Ancient Greece. I was disappointed when Farya said he had tricked me in his most recent Epic Talking video, but it seems like I've been bamboozled yet again. Lovely work as always.
Farya, this is absolutely wonderful. As a person who enjoys playing background music while meditating or doing some other tasks, this was, in a way, like a gift. I would like to humbly suggest that you consider making more music like this in the future, perhaps with different historical settings, such as Ptolemaic Egypt or Celtic. Either way I love you work, thank you.
As much as I’d love to, I like to work with historically accurate music for this, and Greco-Roman music and Mesopotamian are the only ones attested to a minor degree, so any other of these I make will be in either of these cultures
Thank you for this! I'm doing an Ancient Greek build in Minecraft for a potential Greek-themed server, and I always love to listen to music from the time period/culture of what I'm building while I build. This came at the perfect time!
If you knew how many times I had listed the geek, Mediterranean and Roman relaxing music and then I did not realise there was a volume II already! Thank you so much , love it!!
I really love this video. I love the historical authenticity, since this way you can truly hear what the ancient Greeks would listen to in festivals, music competitions etc. Also, 2 hours long with different tunings? What a treat! May I ask if there is a version without the cicadas? I can even buy it if it's not available on UA-cam. I'm currently in my home in the Greek countryside, and the combination of the outside cicadas with those in this video is driving me insane. XD
Shortly after coming across this video, I developed a sinus headache. This music was just what I needed to help me until my medicine took effect. Absolutely beautiful!
I listen to your music when I study or do any school homework, it helps me focus and not get bored with what I'm doing. Thank you for creating these masterpieces. Keep up the good work Mr. Fraya Faraji!
No bloody way, you released this just in time for my Pathfinder 2e Classical Hellenic fantasy campaign. This is gonna be perfect BGM while my players roam a spears and sandals world.
This is excellent background music for braiding a Balearic style sling! I know the Balearic isles are quite a ways off from Greece and that we don't have much if any information on their historical music, but it still feels like a well enough match. Thank you very much for two hours of fantastic and historical music!
I listened to your first composition maybe 50 times because it was not only magical but it was perfect for studying (and especially perfect as background noise when reading Classical Greek texts) and I am so happy and excited you've made a new 2 hour mix. Thank you Farya Faraji !!!
How lucky that you are studying these texts ! I'm studying medicine and have to content myself with the words being of greek origin, I remember my classical litterature classes with great nostalgia... I hope you are still learning a year later ;)
Thank you for this Farya Faraji! Every time I am doing a project I love to put my headphones on and enjoy your ancient music. I’ve always enjoyed the 30 minute symphonies and now there’s a 2 hour one. Thank you!
Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the way you sorted the ancient music by vibe. It made it super easy for me to find the perfect tracks for any occasion Keep up the great work! I'm sure it helps a lot of people like me find the music they love :)
Mesmerizing! I even like the cicadas in the background they add a nice touch along with the waves. I truly believe this was the sound of the ancient Aegean lands.
I really needed some nice music to finish writing my PhD thesis with. 🤗 Thank you. As my phone data is limited 😅 is it possible to find you and your music on some music streaming apps like SoundCloud?
This was right for my night of stuffing envelopes. What was the phenomenon that required you to use equal temperament for some of this? Pan flute only available in equal temperament?
You should really check out Kleopas on UA-cam, his channel has ancient greek music and hymns with the lyre, but the lyrics are all in modern or ancient greek.
Greek "music" exists only to make the words more memorable, or the fluctuations and stirrings of meter, to liberate psychic energy to evoke the words themselves. Eric Alfred Havelock, Preface to Plato.
i'm not familiar with music theory but is any of these matched with the waves/cicadas? this is awesome of course but listening to it I just got an idea that it would be amazing if there was some ancient greek sounding music that made a point to noticeably follow nature's tempos
