For the flowers you are having trouble with germination are mostly cool season flowers. I find that they need cooler temperatures to germinate. My basement stays around 50-55°F in the winter. If I am having trouble with germination, I will put the tray in the basement, and I usually will have great germination. I have also set a tray outside for a week and then bring them inside to get them to germinate. Winter sowing method also works great for cool flowers and perennials. For Bells of Ireland, try putting them on a wet paper towel in a zip lock bag and then place in the fridge for a week. After that, take them out and place on the edge of your heat mat or on a warm, not hot surface. Check daily for the white roots. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the amazing tips!!! I definitely get nervous with my Bells as well! But you are dead on that the spoty germination is due to the cool flowers!!! Great catch!!! :) I was going to try cool growing this season but got super busy with work and didn't to try it, but I definitely see the advantages!!! Lol, more room for other flowers to start!!! Ha! Thanks again for the great information!!! I love fellow flower friends, everyone is super supportive and I really appreciate it! Have a wonderful season!!!

I am not a farmer but I love cut flowers so I got tons of seeds this year and went crazy. Bells of Ireland germinated so easily for me. I used the wet napkin and zip lock method and also put seeds in fridge for a week before trying to germinate. I also found that winter sowing works very well and the plants are so much stronger than indoor.

I love your videos because it's reality. Like, needing to buy seedlings. Spotty germination. Not potting up instantly. It shows the reality of having to get work done and it not always being totally perfect. These videos are some of my favs because I learn about new flowers I could add to my garden for my personal cut flower garden

Oooh, I love that green dress! Ian, aren’t you always saying buy more seeds/seedlings/plants? I mean, I don’t think we need to try too hard to make sure all those beautiful flowers end up on the farm, right? More flowers = more sales, especially when there is such a wide variety of types and colors. Also I love that you’re both always drawn more to bright colors because that’s also my style. I have to force myself to buy a few things in softer or darker colors just to make sure it’s not all hot pink and blinding yellow. I can’t wait to see all the rainbow bouquets and flowers crowns you’ll make this year!

I did grow statice for sale in Finland. I am ex cut flower grower. I do sell flowers still now. One tip with Statice for you is that you need to give Statice some cold nights. I use to put trays of Statice outside when freesing night were coming. Some light frost night under paper or other cover was good for them to flower earlyer. I did grow 7000 plants from seeds for many years. Light freesing works really good for early flowering. You can test this tip. Keep up good work.

I used to run a guest house and I grew all the flowers for the house on my allotment. I think every bouquet is better with some blue statice, I love it. I love green flowers too, I’ve had several failed attempts to grow Bells Of Ireland. Zinnia Envy is another one I’ve failed to grow. Larkspur is one of my favourite cut flowers.

I want to see Serena working into the evening and Ian getting up early and loading the truck! I don’t want to wait. I want to see the little ones running around playing with the kitties on warm summer days. ☺️💕 So glad to see these little affordable changes that allow you to pull back some of your own time.🙂it’s so cute to see you get excited about a lot of trays of plants that without the flower images you show.. they all look relatively identical. Lol. It certainly is a nice flower education. And, as a nurse,I certainly do notice excellent flowers in bouquets. And Stock is definitely a standout. Lisianthus heaven….I am so jealous . Last year was my first year growing them, the Voyager series. Rosanne Brown, Champagne and Lavender. They did okay, but I did lose a few to fusarium. This year I bought 100 seeds as I tried to winter over last years but I wanted a backup plan so I started them in December. They were a epic fail I am afraid, I had a issue with a heat mat that got really hot and I found it was a issue after 4 hours. I did plant them out under protection but have little hopes for them as they had very little roots. I live on Vancouver Island and we cannot get a small amount of plugs here. I would be happy to buy a 1/3 of a flat off you if you need to get rid of some. With the bells of Ireland I got good germination from putting them in the fridge with a wet paper towel. Best of luck for your 2023 season.

I planted 300 of my own Lisianthus this year I’m trying to grow them from seed, it’s supposed to be very difficult so I’ve stepped up to the challenge and they’re doing quite well. I also ordered a few plugs for the flower bed as well just in case. Lisianthus are so beautiful and their value is unmatchable when doing bouquets as long as you keep them with clean flowers they can last up to three weeks in a vase they would pair nicely with the snapdragons and you could get a good price for them at the market. Definitely make those points to Ian there’s definite value in Lisianthus. I know you have a different pay scale on things where you live but in the United States they are going for $60 for 10 stems I’m not sure what that would convert to in Canadian but I’m sure it would be profitable. I love watching your channel because I have the same seed addiction as you

I've been germinating statice in a cool room, so maybe I should try giving it more heat.
I always pinch the snapdragons too.

I had really good luck starting statice indoors with the grow lights you recommended in another video. I was inspired by your beautiful double row of statice last year, I just had to give it a go. I'm working on clearing my grow shelves now, getting my ranunculus and anemones in, as well as onions and potatoes. So much to do once spring begins!
