    Just a quick note to say that this ATC250R is actually a 1986 model not 85 .

      @alw5632 7 місяців тому

      correct. the 1985 had a different front light, first easily seen thing, then the warning he pointed out were not part the plastics until 1986 or if you had to order a replacement plastic for you 1985. there are a few other changes however this bike in this video is not a 1985 model. maybe sold in 1985 between september- december.

      You definitely have a 1985 here. The 86 was the last year and the engine was black not like the grey 85. They produced an 87 model but none got out of factory or not that we know of but a lot of engine parts sold after 86 were stamped with the 87 part number. The 87 was a generation 4 250R and had engine and suspension upgrades.
      Before covid a crate 86 ATC250R near me sold for $21,000 and it has changed hands 3 times that I k ow if then sold on E bay but not sure what it brought. I believe there are 3 that show up from time to time and a few 89 TRX 250R’s still in crates floating around the Midwest but never heard of one selling.

    I have 4 ATCs currently. A 1984 Big Red, two fully suspended ATC 185s and a 1983 atc 250R. The guy to know in this situation is Preston Frasier, his channel is called " This old Trike". He literally has acres of these machines in various conditions mostly survivors. If you want to find a decent 250R he's the guy to ask.

    I rode my 86 ATC 250R just yesterday--had a blast as usual. They aren't any more dangerous than other machines, you just have to know how to ride them. The problem was parents saw the big balloon tires and allowed little Johnny to ride without a helmet unsupervised. They need to be respected just like any other machine.

    Wheelers were fun in the wintertime. I worked at a dealership then and seemed like EVERYONE had one. They also were the beginning of ruining our local motocross tracks, 3 balloon tires altered the ruts&berms, 4-wheelers even worse with hump left between tires. Diane Feinstein and her Dem chronies put a stop to those 3-wheelers though, and the manufacturers responded with throwing another wheel on the front. The damage was done though. IMO we never sold as many Quads as we did 3-wheelers. And yes the first time I rode one I stuck my leg out into a corner and ran over it😂

    I remember that December day in 1985 when the Honda truck delivered my brand new 1986 ATC 250r. It was my parents Christmas gift to me that year. I was 14 years old and no one was home, but me. The salesman Bruce told me years later he was terrified to leave it with me thinking I'd get killed on it. I rode the wheels off that thing. The speed and power is unreal. I won a TT race on it a year later. I'm 53 now and I still have it. I just look at it now. I can't yet bear the thought of letting it go.

    The 1986 was and still is the most desirable. It’s the last year, they didn’t release as many, and there were a couple differences not found on the 1985. 1986 was also the year that Honda made both the quad and trike 250R, and with the explosion in the quad market they just didn’t sell as many of the 1986 model. That one there that you’re sitting in is a 1986 I believe, one of the giveaways was the fork clamps and engine color. Also, the thumb throttle works better for quads and trikes because it’s hard to twist the throttle when you’re hanging off the side of the machine, which is the proper way to corner them. Making a left hand turn your but is shifted off the seat and you’re hanging off the left side of the machine. That means your right arm is stretched out just to hold onto the grip, and that is what makes it harder to twist a throttle. It can be done, and the Kawasaki came stock with a twist throttle, but it’s not ideal for most trail riders. MX and and dune riders didn’t mind a twist throttle, and the Kawasaki was specifically designed for motocross and dune riding which is why it was equipped with a twist throttle. Having the thumb throttle suited most riders because the vast majority of riders would buy them and ride them in the woods, and their machines never even saw a race track at all. Overall it was a cool video topic, I’d love to see more trike and quad videos because I’m not much of a dirt bike guy.

    Around 1988-90 my dad had the 250cc and I had a 90cc. Our backyard was miles of desert trails so we road quiet often. I thought my dad was the baddist man out there on that 250 haha. Then I upgraded to a YZ80 and realized those 3 wheelers were death traps. Good memories.

    $20k minimum. Sucky part about never being started though, I bet the cylinder and bearings all have a ton of rust in them. Same with rhe carb. (Aluminum oxidation)

    Having owned many 3 wheelers I will say the R was one of the safest. At least it had fairly decent suspension. That's said and knowing a few owners of my 85R, it was responsible for about a quarter million in medical bills. Not mine, I learned respect at a young age.

    Yes I know where two of these 1986 models are brand new still in the shipping crate in box in Palestine Tx.
    I also loan a 1986 Honda 250r I purchased brand new in November 1986. It has about 10 hours on it since new.
    The gentleman that has the two new ones in the crate never assembled has five or six others one is a 200 X, a 1987 big red and I think a 185 he owned Palestine back in the days and kept them for investments thinking he was gonna be able to sell them after the 10 year ban but never did.
    He sold a 350x new in the crate just before Covid hit to a gentleman just outside of Tyler Texas for $20,000.
    He has been offered $40,000 apiece for those 250r's and turned them down.

      @ThisOldTrike That's insanity. I think I might know what's going on. I used to be in the used car business, and we would work the auctions quite a bit. Sometimes you'd get word about a buyer who really wanted something we were selling so we would put a plant in the crowd and they would bid up the car to crazy numbers against this particular buyer and sometimes we'd be able to bump the price thousands more than it normally would have. It was pretty effective, and I'm wondering if this is what's going on here.

We all had Big Reds and with the right tires they would float, forded many rivers and creeks trying to get to that good hunting spot. I finally got around to restoring mine a couple years ago and all my quad buddies were scared to death on it saying it was a death trap. The 185S could get up to speed quicker because it was stronger but the 110 had an extra gear so it could still keep up when it got up to speed. They were both fun machines but the 185 was a total back killer. 😁
