Cycling to The Chained Oak - The Tree Featured in Hex at Alton Towers!

- The UK is still under lock down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however leaving your home for exercise is still permitted. As I live close to The Chained Oak & Alton Towers, the roads leading up to the resort are the perfect place for a relaxing ride through the Staffordshire countryside. By travelling this route, it's also very easy to remain more than 2 metres away from everyone, something that must be followed to maintain social distancing.
In this video I take you along a disused railway line from Denstone through to Alton, close to Alton Towers. Along with explaining a brief history of the Churnet Valley Line I also take you up to the legendary Chained Oak tree! The tree was covered in chains back in the 1840's and they still remain on the old oak tree to this day. In the year 2000, Alton Towers opened a ride called Hex - The Legend Of The Towers that was based on the tree and the legend surrounding it. In this video I take you for a closer look at the tree including talking more about the legend!

I find the story of the Chanied Oak Tree really interesting, thats why i love Hex at Alton Towers when i tried it for the first time last year, i cant wait to get back on it this year, the sound track makes it even better
I’ve always wanted to visit - it looks really fascinating!
It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area for Alton Towers!
I've been and it's really really coooooooooool!
We walked up to the chained oak yesterday and I must say it was certainly so,ething I wanted to visit while up here in Derbyshire. Off to Alton Towers today! Can't wait 🥳
Drove past you yesterday coming back from the oak after taking some awesome photos i recently moved from south africa to the uk and been watching your channel for a while now. Then to see u cycling yesterday what a treat it was thanks for this awesome spot.
Great to see you! I hope you enjoyed seeing the old oak tree!
Was awesome thank you can't wait to see more spots i can go and visit thanks to your videos 😁🔥

Hex truly has a fantastic musical theme. Shawn slowly biking up hill to it was a humorous treat
I’m glad you liked it!
I really like your videos because you are just yourself you don’t let people affect you and that’s why I think your a great person to watch and lucky for your mates to be around
Thank you!
To me, the fact that the chained oak is real adds so much to hex that makes it the best dark ride in the country for me. Great video Shawn.
It sure is a beautiful ride with an epic backstory!
I’ve visited the train on a couple of occasions, to me it feels like there’s a definite presence there, took a few photos amd in one im sure there something more in the picture than just the tree!
I’ve always found it fascinating how chains grow 😂
IKR I kept saying “Shawn the branches grew around the chains”🤦♀️😭
Literally like an earl had the tree chained because of a curse and I was like “hun have u ever heard the legend on hex about the tree!?”
in 2007 we was @ AltonTowers on a Ghost Hunt of the Towers ,& they told us be4 we started that a Branch Fallen, so added abit more spookyness to the Night & morning Ahead ;-) ,, great Vid Shawn Keep the great work up.
I have been on the Churnet Valley Railway and I would say it's worth it for the scenery
It's stories like this that make me want to visit your country some day.
Make sure you’re specific with which parts, some like this are magnificent but some others are scrappy, but Alton is a legendary place in the uk and I hope you get to come visit some day!
that hex music is making me miss it so much more
I've never been but after watching this I might
It’s definitely worth checking out next time you visit Alton Towers!
CommonTatus yes

Was the Hex video shot at the actual old oak tree or did they use another?
Most of it was shot somewhere else!

Feels like it's from a fantasy video game or something! The Chained Oak being a real thing never ceases to amaze me.
It sure is a fascinating place!
I went to the tree on my way back from towers last year. We parked up at the side of the main road and walked down for a look and its brilliant to see
The eerie wind noise sounds a lot like a B and M coaster does anyone else find this
Joe Candish it’s the hex audio
That place looks enchanting! Thank you Shawn💙🇺🇸
Honestly this history is SO fascinating! Again, I never knew it was a real tree 🌳/ story! I thought it was made up for the ride! Lol. Love it! 😍😍😍❤️😭😇👻 xxx

I know I’ve said it before, but you are genuinely the most wholesome person on UA-cam, and I thank you for it, as it really shows in the content and that you care for your viewers by replying to each comment. I would love to meet you at a park one day, as I feel like you’re the type of person I could talk to for hours about theme parks! Stay safe and soon enough we’ll get back on the rollercoasters!
Thank you very much. Definitely say hello if you see me at a theme park!
I've been on Hex, and the ride scares me to bits, but Shawn, you're so inspirational. Please could you follow me on social media

Thanks for this guide Shawn, we walked the old railway line to the Chained Oak and back yesterday with my family just over 7 miles, before we turned off the old railway line on to the path that leads up to the Chained Oak we only went and walked past Harry Turnstyles going the other way. Made my youngest daughters day :)

I loved Alton Towers when tussauds owned it as there was so many rides added to a original storyline and theme but now it's been spoilt cause it's newer attractions are IP based and for me that's where the magic ended for me. Brilliant video. Really enjoyed this Shawn. I’d only heard of the legend from other mentions of it in theme park related videos so it was fab to hear the full tale and see it up close. Very eerie. Off to go read some more on the subject :-) xx
