  • A video to explore the possibilities for the setting of the halfshaft bearings using the nut on the inner end.
I do not intend to instruct owners to follow my suggestions, but just demonstrating the options.
It seems to achieve the figures state in the manual that the nut would need to be excessively tight, putting unnecessary loads on the bearings, whether the bearings have end float or preload is not a safety issue but just about the reliability of the oil seal.
I have spoken to several other mechanics and the consensus was to just remove the end float.
My own plans for future seal replacements will be to tighten the nut to take up end float and then tighten until the next hole lines up as I have done in this video, but it is up to every owner to decide what is best for their tractor.
NOTE, during this video the seal carrier is left unbolted so it is free to rotate with the halfshaft and doesn't affect the readings of the spring balance!

Interesting video. I changed the axle seals just few days ago to my old 4DM . I adjusted to zero end float but no preload. (Some videos on my channel)

I didnt have any info on my 4/65 and it was leaking when i bought it. Ive been a diesel truck mechanic all my life so ive been around equipment plenty. So if i dont have specs on a bearing i just take it to 0 lash. It hasnt backfired on me yet. My Nuffy isnt leaking since i fixed it 10 years ago (well it leaks just not from my bearing and seal repair). Now i just need to get an injection pump that doesnt cost more than i paid for the tractor and only a it ran when it was parked guarantee.

Hello From Finland! Thank you for the video. I'm in the process of changing the oil seals on my 460 and really need this kind of information. Would it be possible to get the right nut tension on newtonmeters?

Hello, it seems a little strange to me that such a high torque is required. I would have expected the two taper roller roller bearings to be locked up with that high torque. Is it possible that the inner bearing is seized to the shaft so the torque on the nut is failing to move the bearing and therefore increase the preload ?. Just a thought ,perhaps I’ve misunderstood the setup. Thanks for the videos.

No, the inner race was moving on the shaft, when I undid the nut a full turn it all became loose.

Welcome to the proud ownership of a Nuffield. If you fund a fix that isn't full replacement or overhaul of the entire unit let us know. That's the only advice I get and for the price of shipping moreover the price on parts IF you find them ill let it be slow...when it runs.

When you talk about pounds, do you mean foot pounds or inch pounds

The torque wrench figures are pounds foot, the spring balance is pounds force.
