Converting Early Nuffield PTO to Later Style

  • Anybody with a Nuffield built before 1960ish will have the early pto system where the pto comes in first and the hydraulic pump second which I find very irritating when using mounted pto equipment like rotovators and mowers. Here I convert my tractor to the later style where the hydraulic pump comes in first using parts from a later tractor.

    We also had a Nuffield 10/60. It was a 1967 model. The most efficient part of this BMC was the PTO shaft. One of the disadvantages was that it did not lift hydraulically when the clutch was pressed.

      3/42 & 4/60 already have this style of pto, perhaps your tractor has a replacement hydraulics from a early tractor.

      @@montegoson I’m guessing it’s highly likely, many of them become Frankenstein hybrids over time and the previous owner didn’t have any history on it.

    The lenkage that's at top won't engage to lower my lift on my Leland 384 Tractor. The lift comes up as soon as you start the tractor even when I move the lever to lower it.
    Thanks Mike C

      Quite normal for the usual back pressure in the system to lift the arms when the pump is running. Do they go down when you press down on them?

      Ok it’s not a tractor im 100% familiar with, does it have position control or just the early draught control? I’m thinking draught control button could be stuck in.

    Appreciate your wisdom.
    Riddle me this… the Nuffield is a British tractor and yet you are referencing “standard” measurements during this video instead of metric (3/16”, 3” , 1 5/8” etc.).
    Don’t get me wrong, I use standard measurements all the time. I am used to using a calculator to change metric to standard on my Leyland (and my Yamaha motorbike).
    Just curious as to why you aren’t using metric in this video?
    Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!

    • @montegoson

      The world is a mixture of Imperial and metric measurements, and so are Nuffield’s. While the piston bores and most bearings in the gearbox are metric the rest of the tractor is Imperial. The spacing of the front axle bolts are 2 inches not 50.8mm. Even the liners that are bored metric, if you measure the outsides you will find Imperial decimal sizes that are easy figures like 4.300 inches as opposed to a metric figure like 109.23mm, writing or speaking the imperial figures it is far less likely that errors will occur! Besides all that if I was to cut a piece of wood or dig a hole, both would be measured in inches as any metric figure given to me would have to be converted to feet and inches to have any meaning to me, at the time I grew up England used feet and inches, £s, shillings & penny’s

    I was under the impression the very latest pto that had the hyds live all the time, you only needed to engage pto. These where much superior to the old system, the were fitted standard from the silver roof leyland?

    • @montegoson
      @montegoson  3 роки тому

      I’m converting to the later Nuffield style, not the Leyland style. I not sure if the type you refer to would fit the Nuffield castings.

      Thats normal for Leyland position control, could be a leaking internal pipe or worn seal on the piston but not the worlds greatest position control!

    I have a Nuffield 10/42, one day I was brush hogging and hit a rock and stalled the tractor. I started it back up and kept going, no problem. When I was done I disengaged the pto and could never engage it again. I wiggle the shaft left to right by hand and try pulling the lever and it just will not go in. Any thoughts on what it could be?

      @montegoson  5 років тому

      @@montegoson Good morning! I have pulled the axle a qwrt of an inch and dare not go further: what is the bearing on the end of the axle: a bronze "glide" bearing or a needle bearing. With the latter I run the risk of needles falling into the crankcase when I pull the axle out..... .On my 342 no problem: glide-bearing, but what kind of bearing is on the end in a 3/45? maybe you know. I've asked around but there aren't many 3/45's around here. many thanks and your video's are a great help. Both my tractors are still doing a good job on my little farm even though 60 odd years old! If you put the pto lever in the rearward engaged position that will stop the drive tube dropping, then the pto shaft can be pulled out of the rear of the tractor to replace the seals.
