Donkey starter motors were a very common way of starting older machines. They are also very practical for use in remote areas of the world where batteries cannot be maintained. I prefer the use of air staters for larger Diesel engines. The issue air start is having an source of compressed air or a air tank on hand that doesn't leak. Many large diesels made in the USA still used Donkey starters were built well into the 60s in think. At that point battery or compressed air start took over. Now days compressed air is only used in very large equipment. The market for this style of tractor were farms that demanded simple machine that did one thing and did it well. They had to be tough and simple to repair when the did break. For that these tractors fit the bill.
Thanks for sharing, I've got a belarus mtz 50 super, mine is probably a later model cause it has an electric starter, I think it's 4.7 liters and its n/a I've been through many adventures with it and it never let me down, I love it!!
Imagine you park this tractor and turn of the engine and someone says: "Could you move it a little closer a bit?" :D I really see that this starting method is quite popular on old Soviet vehicles.
+Triplex5014 Batteries were really hard to get in some regions, like Lithuania. Often nothing electrical worked in tractors after few years from production. Fidling with wires was too much for dudes, who drank vodka every day. I sometimes drive tractor like this. It wants it is quite fun. It goes where it wants because of half turn looseness in steering :D If you want tractor like this to start quickly, you just leave it on hill. Just put it in high gear and roll start it when needed :) Oh, brakes don't work often in them, so you shut off engine while backing up to hill.
It is pony motor/engine! In the past it was a small gasoline engine that would be used to turn over the main diesel till it started. This little gas engine would start easily especially in cold weather. Also called a pup motor. Donkey engines auxiliary steam engines, used for pumps, winch and similar sort of things.
+pvc988 big John Deere diesel motors use a gas pony to start. They share the same cooling fluids so the pony is also warming the big engine up. It works well in the winter.

Holy christ that's one long starting procedur. But it was of Course worth the effort just to get Into that Nice cab and slide down in that comfortseat. Feel so sad for the russian guys who actually work in things like this.
Трактор с виду убитый,а как присмотреться...радиатор целый -вода стоит ,ручка КПП новая,пускач тоже почти новый ,тяга хорошая. Движок с топливной подшаманить ,подкрасить немного и ещё не один десяток лет отработает
Shame there is no obvious place to buzz a hole in the bulkhead, fit a dog onto the flywheel of the donkey engine then use a cordless drill to start it.
A cordless drill is modern tech to you, is it cretin? A dc motor and a battery. If a tractor has a job to do it has to start in all weather without pissing about. otherwise it's scrap metal.
Probably one of the world's worst tractors made, you have to fight the steering to keep it in a straight line ideal for the fields but not on a main road.
swedish gaming I'd have to agree with you on that the old tractors are far better made, they were built to last and with quality steel unlike the plastic crap they use today on most farming vehicle's.
this was the most terrifying thing when i was a kid when my grandpa was starting the tractor with this bloody two stroke..

that's so cool so you have to start the little engine to get the tractor going
Cat has important role in this video, it keep mice away so that they do not eat a rope for starting this small starter engine.
Brilliant - so funny
it will be suck to use as zombie get away vehicle :)
great video , awesome tractor.
wow thanks for sharing this I've never knew they used 2 cycle engines to start tractors back then
looks like that tractor has done its fair share of work.
blitzkrueg07 Or it stood in the wilderness because its to weak to pull the plow.
@@leoborn4013 People have been plowing with much weaker tractors.
Very nice view of a pony start!
Thanks for the wonderful video☺
donkey engine not pony

Wow. That's the first time I've seen someting like that. I have a machine which uses this engine but it has standard electrical starter motor.
+pvc988 big John Deere diesel motors use a gas pony to start. They share the same cooling fluids so the pony is also warming the big engine up. It works well in the winter.
I have an MTZ-50 too, but it have got electric starter. Good old soviet machine.

its called a pony motor.

Hi. 2 stroke starter gasoline engine is connected to the flywheel by a shaft that has a clutch. So I release the clutch to engage the diesel

Before we decided that a battery powered starter motor was the way to go.....
it has new sparkplugs what's with that
And I'd say this is the only thing why it's started actually

Imagine the Indian guys
Is that starting engine very loud?
Yes. It has no exhaust . Just a straight pipe to exit on the other side of the tractor.
+.:Some Player:. We have similar tractor. It is like freaking air atack. I can't even hear diesel, when that 2-stroker screams.

yeah but it takes a beating and starts every year.
yeah thats the beauty of the old tractors they are 8000% tougher then the modern tractors. old tractors just huff and puff and go beyond the limits
swedish gaming I'd have to agree with you on that the old tractors are far better made, they were built to last and with quality steel unlike the plastic crap they use today on most farming vehicle's.
In Soviet Belarus there no difference of road and field.
yes it is. on the fields, there are no open manholes, you can fall in.
Big torture.
