Surf Lakes - Australia’s First Man-made Surfing Wave Pool
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Sitting in the middle of this manmade lake in Queensland Australia, sits a giant machine that creates waves designed for surfing.
Using compressed air, it’s pushed upwards, when dropped, it’s shape displaces a perfect ring of water that travels outwards, until hitting several manmade reefs, creating different height surfing waves.
Visitors can choose between 5 different areas and wave types, such as a gentle rolling waves for beginner surfers, all the way up to fast and demanding waves for expert and pro surfers, they even have waves specifically design for bodyborders.
According to Surf lakes, the system allows for up to 200 surfers and learners each hour. It's the largest surf lagoon on the planet with its 80 megaliters of water volume.
► 5 Waves World Firsts
♦ Simultaneous wave types: 5 types of waves, each of which vary in difficulty, size, length and shape, at the same time
♦ Most breaks in a wavepool: 10 separate waves (4 left and 4 right reef breaks) plus 2 beginner waves
♦ Largest surfing lagoon in the world: Water volume 80 megalitres
♦ Largest wave face height: Up to 2.4m face height. 2.2m achieved at mid-level prototype testing
♦ Highest wave productivity: At full commercial capacity, 5 Waves will be able to produce over 2,400 waves per hour, allowing up to 240 surfers in the lake at the same time, all catching 10 waves per hour
Thanks for watching

i dont get how they arent scared
Australia.
Of what?
It's scary I'm looking for sharks lol except there probably just catfish 😂
That ring around it is a floating net, the top floats the bottom is weighted so unless someone climbs over it, chances of becoming a meat pancake are near zero
I live in Australia, so I was pretty bumbed to find out this is just a test facility for demonstration purposes. But still very cool.
Pretty amazing
Just like the video
Same here mate, a little disappointed too.
It’s in Yeppoon , northern qld
They have new surf pool north of Melbourne now
Kelly has the better wave but Occy has the better design. Kelly's wave dishes out one wave every 5-minutes whereas Occy's wave will throw out a few hundred waves per hour. If Occy can only double the height of his wave it would become unbeatable compared to all other wave pool designs IMO. But how do you generate a bigger wave with the design they have now? How about:
A) Make the donut heavier and/or bigger
B) Raise the donut higher before dropping it
C) Install an hydraulic press to generate more force by pushing the donut down harder and faster
D) Do all of the above
What do you think?
All seem feasible...but it must not be that easy or they would have done it already unless it's a budget thing. To increase the size of the wave it seems the whole facility not just the donut (and the corresponding power plant) has to be upscaled/changed. Deeper, the breaks will have to be larger, more space to paddle in, plus more run-out space for wave energy so you don't end up w/backwash. An 8' barreling wave?! The facility would need to be enormous...
@@steveworden1994
Makes sense but so does digging a bigger hole, adding more h20, adjusting donut to raise higher & if it doesn't work then get drunk & start over
Find the resonance.! Bit like double bounce on the trampolines. All in the timing but you gotta have 2 conscentric donuts. The inner one prepares the water by inhaling the water and towards it and the outer just at the right time comes down and accelerates the water as it is going back down. Contact me for my plans if you like. Regards andy
Kelly's wave is a better quality wave and a much longer ride. Almost to good.
Have you chance to compare with other technologies like Wavegarden that grow over the world?
I must say that is pretty bad ass. The Compressed air tanks have to be huge and the power to fill them this quickly would be costly I would think? VERY COOL!
seems a little inefficient
I want to hear how well suppress the release of compressed air sounds like, it all looks tranquil without sound in the video.
I’ve seen it in another short clip and it’s a scary asf sound.
Very steam punk
Did i just see OCCY ?? guy’s a legend 👍
Occy and parko
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND NO SHARKS
This is awesome. No matter what the wind direction there will always be a wave with offshore winds.
I can feel the Naegleria Fowleri from here.
Wow awesome work
This would be so amazing to see !
Super. Here in New Caledonia, no wave because of the greatest lagoon on Earth, it should be wonderful !!!
Amazing Idea! If the build a corridor for the wave front, the wave could last longer.
This is amazing! 🏄🏻
Needs to be bigger. They are working on increasing Kelly's wave pool here in California up to 12 foot faces, they can get 8 footers now but I think for that pool to go over the top they need 12' or bigger faces along with adding some different contours to the floor of the pool so it has a few performance sections that let you cut back, bang off the white water, off the lips and whatever you like. Just so It's not a barrel /one aspect wave. Good start here, the method is simple, they need for a bit more size.
That is super DOPE
I think I love it
It's two years later. I want my wave lagoon!!!!
Sweet!
Now make thermodynamic columns.
Criminal- I saw a couple go through un surfed. Good work, may help with the crowd problem eventually. I even think I saw a drop in!
Great!
Looks like straight out of a sci-fi movie.
Awesome!
"Do not my friends become addicted to water."
Yeah the 4701!
2 year on seeing first on news. Can’t wait shark free 😂🎶
This is freaking awesome guys well fucking done you glorious xunts !
With relatively minor modifications, and placed in water with natural waves or tides, this could be a great method to generate electric power.
That’s been around for years, I think a whole navy base is powered by one
Oooh there’s gonna be invitations- I’m bringing my drone too
Place hills on the floor of that thing to make larger waves.
Not as good as Kelly’s wave but still looks super fun and has tons of novelty factor value.
So keen for them to make it public
They won't be making it public as it it a test and it has been built on someone's private property in yepoon
시흥 웨이브파크 몇 번 봤다고 이걸 밀어주네. 고마워 유고리즘!
So cool
I have a question. Is it possibile to do that in a part of the sea in a Beach ?
🔥🔥🔥!
It's so heavy, that IT'S HEAVY!!!!!!!...... It's so big, that it's BIG!!!!!!
Need to set up tent on shore and stay for a few days!!!!!!
It’s in Yeppoon and I worked near if u can see it a K away
Y is this such a weird vibe to watch it’s like a movie
Cool
Badass
Finally, science used for something useful..
You are the dumbest prick I have ever seen like the while concept of science is useful you flop
They have lakes in Australia? Or just this one lake?
Just one lake and everybody stands in line & gets a turn
@@shillout7270 lol
you should make it more oval for length of wave
The forbidden pneumatic doughnut.
Spiders and sharks.. nah im good maaaaaate. Just let us use the lagoon.
Don't forget the sharks.
Will these surf lakes be planted with Great Whites? ...You know, for eco balance...
I want one for Canberra
they forgot to mention the giant squid lurking in the depths of the outback..
Well, you don't have to worry about sharks.
Something about big powerful machines scares me and amazes me at the same time
Since this is in Australia, I'm assuming there is a Great White or something equally deadly in the lagoon.
Very original
Throw in a few irakanjis. That'll keep ya on ya toes.
Haha!
Just the occasional 12ft croc. Nothing to worry about. Much like a guard dog really.
Best to have a piss first before entering.
Lol 😂
All fun and games till the crocks find it, then it's a real fun game
What about brain eating amoeba in lakes??
S Perera brain eating amoeba is only in still water
@@zylomistic_7939They found the amoeba in water parks in the U.S. A man died from contracted it from a water park. Google it..very sad
R Mial that’s why Kelly slater’s surf ranch water is dyed green, it’s actually an antibacterial chemical that was designed for farm water tanks.
S Perera a disney waterpark was shit down in 1987 8i think because of a similar reason
That machine is TERRIFYING 😮
Imagine having to make artificial waves In a lake!
This post was made by the Great Lakes gang.
"The church bell it rang, 29 times" ;)
Sweeeeet! Can’t wait till these types of wave pools get inland to places that will change lives, where surfing isn’t around
Whaaaaaat
I totally agree. Doesn't Queensland already have enough tourist attractions?
Haha. Your comment reminded me of Chicken Joe from the movie Surf's Up.
Depends on how much energy it uses... Looks massive so I assume it needs a lot of power
ikr and no sharks
That is amazing! would be so good to become a great surfer since you can continuously catch good waves
i live 20 min from it no one is allowed to use it...
@@dxhacksaw yeah it would be expensive as to power that thing
@@sadenuttie2234 didnt ask to go for free, it just sits there i drive past it weekly we have to drive 2 hours for a serf beach
@@dxhacksaw yeah, that’s fair enough. But I saw another video on a similar wave machine and it costed 50k for an hour (1 person). Would be expensive as
@@sadenuttie2234 yea i dont think it would cost that much, they just hype the damn thing up so much and every one here can only look at the thing
Surf perfectly shaped, freshwater, shark-free waves consistently?? I'M ALL IN!
Cool stuff, a surf spot in Australia where you don't have to worry about being eaten alive by a giant great white -Occy is a living legend!🤘🍻
Yeah occy rocks he signed my board 20 years ago at the gold coast! Such a nice, genuine guy! And he also snaps a board like no other!!! Occ forever thanks for being kind enough to say hello and take the time to sign my board!🤙👍
@@baddazzgarage2953 cool story bro, I met Occy at Rocky point some 20 plus years ago, he's a super nice guy and was just destroying DA waves on the north shore, he surfed my friends boards at that moment called straight up, have a good one and keep on surfing✌
@@jimsurfnfish8089 occ destroying waves yep that was his bread and butter! Your story is even better and he took the time to ride your friends designs why am i not suprised! Just a gentleman and legend of the surfing community! They say meeting your hero's is always a let down well not so with occy ! One of the greatest and nicest australian sports figures of all time! The world would be a much better place if we all had a little occy in us!! Take care Jim ! May the finest waves always follow you!!!🏄♂️
This is a great design, being able to have maybe dozens of people of different skills surfing in different sections at the same time is awesome.
This looks like something out of Mad Max!
It really does ha
No way this is profitable
Maybe for the film industry ?
This is exactly the way of thinking that is wrong with the whole entire world
@@Exxus61422 others gain from lavish demonstrations of wasteful spending.
This is udderly ridiculous... you have a country that is severally in drought, and farmers desperately needing water and we waste it making waves in a man made lake...
You under estimate how much water a farmer would use to irrigate crops.
The farmers need the water. Go to a beach if you want to swim. Dont waste it.
Udderly, as in cows udderly? 😂
Should name it Alcatraz, I'm sure it will be too expensive to keep operating and will be permanently shut down. I see comments of it already being broke down.
Thats what i"m talking about, good old fashioned Australian smarts.
sell our technologies & our smart made in Australia products.
Stop the chinnese factories that steal our tech.

My Dad : Yup son

Toxic Plants
Australian people (I’m sorry)
Yeah fine
Congratulations on a great wave system. The wave should be quite nice as you tweak the system and increase the wave height. Wave machines are the wave of the future.
If you can afford the electricity bill.
It broke after making this vid and hasn't worked since lol
Dude seriously?
And its got hole's in it
You are playing right???
The KS wave pool is a better design.
I thought of this first! The only thing they added was the science, technology, and basic math that i am unwilling to learn.
And money
And entrepreneurship
A Nightmare for someone with megalophobia
as if the pros don't get enough waves.
I hear ya
A pro has to paddle out, select their wave(s) & attempt to drop in... all while on-the-clock. Sets & conditions can vary, minute to minute. If competitive surfing ever adopts this... I'm out
I was born down under (Wahroonga) and then moved to "The Land of 10,000 lakes." Minnesooota. Yaaa! You Betcha! Ya Darn Tootin! "Oooh Yaaa…….Dat looks good Der Bub." I was fortunate enough to move back to Oz straight after high school(1996), "Good on ya Mate" learn to surf and then spend the next two decades surfing around the world. I've surfed absolutely Perfect waves on Lake Superior. I've been thinking about a way to bring waves to the countless points on countless lakes (10,000 at least) here in MN. A dream! A business plan! Let's start talking about this!
Salvitori Popadillo I’ve always thought to add these to lakes where you already have the water! Just experienced my first lake surf in Marquette a couple of weeks ago on Superior!
@@TheCrystalCollector No Way Bro! That's so cool to hear. Marquette can seriously get really sick! I've surfed there many times. It has some of the most dramatic scenery. There's nothing like walking from the parking lot down a trail a foot deep in snow, cedar trees drooped over you with pure white dipped tips cone shaped making you think of something else. And then it opens up and as you look through the snow filled air, you see it....Perfect 4 foot(7 to 8 foot faces) peaks A-framing all down the beach. Just like anywhere with that much water and wind, you'll get all kinds of waves. I'm just kidding. I wouldn't try it. Don't waste your time. ;)
Lake superior has surfable waves?
They need this in some of the natural reservoirs in Northern California😍
Camp out in the lush mountains and surf all day, smoke dank weed, and if you get get board lol you can just take a drive up the hill and go snow boarding in Tahoe!
It wouldn't be a natural reservoir anymore if you make an artificial lake with a giant machine on it. No constructions allowed in natural reservoirs, obviously
The natural reservoirs I surf, you have to walk a lot, swim a lot and wait for Nature to send you a nice wave.
....much better waves too
😌
OMG excellent idea for a mini vacation Paul. We would call it Park Mears. Open year around...
That’s awesome I’d feel much safer trying to surf there than in the ocean. Shame there won’t be one in Australia, we’ll just sell the idea for a quick buck 😔
No thrill of sharks LOL! But little chance of drowning, swept away by dangerous rips, sting to death from sea wasps etc. Seriously, it's a great Aussie idea.
How is it powered? Looks like it could be a big waste of energy, in a time of environmental destruction! Other than that, it looks like fun! Who doesn't like a nice wave?
Talking about ultimate steampunk
Yep that's right there are so many things that will eat you here dont come here ........ pls...... if you believe that.🤔
Waow..It looks unreal. Mad Max style but safer.
This thing reminds me of something out of mad Max lmao
Who runs wave town?
@@jdlives8992 haha two surfers enter, one surfer leaves
Immorten Joe installed a pool at the citadel.
Yes please!!!!! For us Children of the surf that live inland!!! Our oppurtunty in our midst.....THIS NEEDS TO SPREAD ACROSS THE WORLD ASAP!!!!
Nice idea 💡 now the need to incorporate a way for it to work to harness wave energy also and you got a winner on 2 levels then 👍
So I don't have to risk a shark attack to surf in the future? Sweeeeeetttt
guys, next time indoor winter skiing resort in alaska, pleeeeeease.
To make it even more realistic they should stock the lake with white pointers
I don't surf and I don't live in Australia, yet this makes me happy.
I just wanna go over there and stay in the water and go up and down lol
Dangerous
lol they want to make an 8ft Swell o.o' wow can't imagine the size of that one, uhhm may i suggest making it in Dubai and getting funding from the prince o.o' he's always interested in making the biggest and most expensive shit
2 years later I live near it still no paying public
Thank you for this video! Saw video of this in a drone compilation, and couldn't understand the pupose, just thought the surfers were taking advantage of something in a dam or whatever, but it's actually made to make surf waves! Great to know! Thank you!
Brilliant! According To Space and Funds' This Can Possibly Be Scaled Up To Massive Waves Daily! 🌊
Compressed gas would explain the Mexican riviara
That is a pond not a lake
It's a pound
At least they aren't afraid to show us how its done. Unlike Kelly Slaters TOP SECRET wave pool....LOL
as a scientist i can not understand - how it possible, that when i was swimming on blacksea waves upto 3meters high, afterstorm weather was there, but it was mu first time sea swimming - i was not experienced person - with friends - we quickly run in to sea when water goes back - otherwise wave drop us back- to the coast, so we run some like 30meters and start swiming on big waves - i was expected that on big wave tide i will fall from surface under water - due to rise-upspeed inertion, or it will happens
in intermediate decline between waves - due to downspeed-decrement inertion, but somehow swimming on waves - like glueing to the surphase, and swing not leads to under-drops diving on low extremums between big waves, it is strange for phisics, water not solid like fast lift floor, how it can accelerate and stop swimer so fast without owershoot
God bless you Australia, I got chills of excitement thinking about this!
Wow, amazing idea and technology. This vid is 2 years old, so I wonder, has it been done commercially yet?
