Filmed on the Bandstand on Brighton Seafront in England, with the now burnt out West pier in the background, along with the Palace pier even further back. I know this, because i have also played on that bandstand :)
I always thought that they joined at the same time? I think it was the other way around. They joined at the same time, then Ricky left first, and Blondie stayed for another year or so.
Sorry to be nitpicky, but since Blondie and Ricky are in this, and no Bruce, wouldn’t this be (filmed in) ‘72? Obviously the album this song is from came out in ‘71, but it’s always been my understanding that the reshuffling of the lineup didn’t occur until ‘72. I don’t know, it was a long time ago.
Bruce left for a few years after the recording of Surf's Up over a disagreement and Dennis had damaged his arm, so they got Rikki Fataar (drums) and Blondie Chaplin (guitar) as replacements.

Different from the original. You can hear that strange "froggy" sound in the third verse plus Carl's strato (?) in the fifth verse clearer. BTW, a lot of sound effects in this song. They were sure innovative... When was this promo filmed, since Blondie and Ricky was not on the Surf's Up album?
Blondie and Ricky joined at the beginning of the recording sessions for “Carl and the Passions - So Tough”. Either late ‘71 or early ‘72. Then Bruce left some time in the middle of those sessions. He played on something like two songs on the album (don’t know which ones) before he left.

1972, around the time Carl and the Passions came out. There's another promo for You Need a Mess of Help To Stand Alone from the same day.
There’s also something different about the vocals. Can’t quite put a finger on it. It’s just different from the album version.
