- This time we are going to take a look at the new improved version of the X6. The old model was pretty awful. Fingers crossed this new model truly has been improved.
If you are interested in buying the X6 it's currently on sale for 28.99 US dollars - www.gearbest.c...

Yeah CPS 1&2 are 384x224, not so bad for small sprites but things like SF2 look a bit short not CRT stretched. I think I'd prefer stereo speakers instead of that low end camera. Only thing you could do with cheap outdated cameras is probably using a pair to do some low-fi 3D photos. Hardware is decent but the software seems to be the highlight as emulation was fairly consistent. Same old D-pad matter, please whoever makes these, look at 8BitDo, new products with real D-pads, it can be done and it fits the games better.
1:20 Oh come on, they are just using recycled cardboard! This is commendable! :)
Hehe, in a strange light, that's true.
well.. actual psp seams to be a king for emulation device.
Since PS Vita is out of production, it would be the next in line. It has OLED screen, and plays everything that PSP can play, plus you have the addition of Vita games. I get it, that its not anything really special, but it had some cool titles, like Uncharted
@@KISSbestfan i may get one. i have 3000 model. my is not hacked.
@@KISSbestfan i may get one. i have 3000 model. my is not hacked.
@@prulcan its too early to buy Vita cheaply, since its freshly out of production. For now you are right with PSP, since its fairly cheap, plus the soft mod is easy to do and not permament.
PSP games can be found cheaply too, well, at least some of them. For example HP5 is a great port, and a great value game, and sometimes you can find it for a few bucks. Same with Driver 76, Asassins Creed etc. But my guess is that in 2020-2021 PS Vita would get much much cheaper.
@@KISSbestfan i do have assassin creed.. also i have camera for psp.
love your review videos. Thank you once again Mark, keep up the good work.
Your very welcome A war.
i know Im pretty off topic but does anyone know a good website to stream new tv shows online?
@Fox Kellan Flixportal :D
@Elijah Terrence Thanks, I went there and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !
@Fox Kellan Glad I could help :D
I just got mine in the mail a couple of days ago and I think it's tottaly amsome! Now if you want your battery to last longer go to settings and lower the brightness to 1 also had to put a small piece of ducktape over that bright light because it kept blinding me while I was playing! This is an abousle steal for 37.00 on Amazon comes with alot of GBA games!
Yes I just got the X6 and it struggles to play the Super Nintendo games! The only three games that work are Crono Trigger Bugs Bunny Porky's Haunted house and the Cyottee vs Roadrunner game! All of the other game emulators on it work just fine! So I give it a rateing of 8 out of ten! Excellent game console with amazing sound and alot of games on it!
Mark excellent review just to add, this handheld when I viewed it plays most of the cps1 and cps2 sega genesis on a bin file , gba , gb , gbc, most of the neogeo , nes, snes, and psx, yes psx it needs to be on a bin file , compared it to my psp 1000 game play , it plays well. marvel vs capcom excellent , metal slug x , marvel vs sf, and the most love pepsiman, and karmenrider V3 in japan, I was suprise that they included inside an internal memory of 6g and I only both it for £18.99 in ebay new, I think it can be compared to a pap k3 or rs97 just put the right roms, excellent and its more cheaper
I keep on trying to get psx roms on my x6 do were do you get marvel vs capcom please send link plz thx also can you play psx games that were converted from iso to bin???
What do you mean by bin file because when I load a gba rom on it a blank white screen appears
can it play psp games like god of war for example?
Looks nice for anyone who can't get a psp these days plus can you use rewind and change the roms with ones you like
Hey the X6 or PSP clone, only new version ? whut same software I can see when I reviewed it year ago or more.
Still have the same emulation problems like Neo Geo.
Great video like always Mr Retro Core :)
This runs better than the old one I tried. Maybe I had the very early version originally.
@@RetroCore Aha, oke now i'm curious about this one ;)
That was a brilliant response at 1:13 absolutely hilarious!
When I took out the console I caught a glimpse of the card packing and thought, eh?
The R-Type game extension ended in .GB so its the normal Gameboy version.
As happy as I am to see this video, I've unfortunately written another essay comment about it XD
This one looks just like a physical hybrid of my old X6 (which must have been an older model, and is still stuck on that "updating playlists" screen) and my currently still in use MP5 Player. This one is blue like my MP5 Player (which doesn't say X6 on it anywhere, just MP5 at the bottom with a camera zoom description) but it has the physical button interface of the X6, because the X6 is copying the PSPS while my MP5 Player copies the PS Vita. The buttons, LEDs, ports on top, everything is the same as my X6. Honestly, I'd much prefer the X6 (PSP knockoff) physical design with the MP5 Player (PS Vita knockoff) internal functionality including the appearance of the menus, because just like in your video here, mine also works better than the old X6.
Since they're Chinese knockoffs which seem to work randomly different, but I'd like to keep things simple, I just refer to the older model as X6 and the new one as MP5 Player; thus, it seems like you've got an MP5 Player with the shell of an X6, an ideal version. The MP5 Player shell has smaller D-pad and action buttons which don't feel as nice as the thicker buttons on the X6.
I had the same camera problem too, not being able to zoom out properly, and I'm glad it's not just me about that stinkin' video option!!! I can see that there's a video reel symbol on the camera's main screen, so maybe it's designed as a touch screen access interface and that's why we can't record video? Maybe that's meant to be the only way to do it, and since the screen isn't interactive, we can't do it. I dunno.
Your games ran similarly, too. For me, SFC and Mega Drive games have always been hit / miss, but Mega Drive games have a higher failure rate. Sonic The Hedgehog is barely playable with plenty of skipped frames, Mean Bean Machine is okay but has horrible sound issues, and Raiden Trad moves much too fast with missing frames to be playable.
As for Super Famicom games, Chrono Trigger is one I spent a lot of time on, and less time on others. For the most part, every SFC game is capable of running at full speed; they just slow down when you reach processor-intensive areas of the game, like the action screen, or menu screens with too many options. Cutscenes and light option screens run at normal speed, and in the case of some games, even faster than normal.
There is one really good option for getting SFC games to run at perfect speed (but sometimes they may go too fast in some areas): just use the European version of the game, not the NTSC version. Because those games are intended for a 50Hz system and optimized to run so, they will speed up on this MP5 / X6 device. Super Metroid runs at 100% perfect speed in PAL format, and it speeds up during cutscenes or item grabs -- it's the perfect ideal way to play the game, boring stuff speeds up while gameplay is normal speed. The NTSC version does all the same, but about 20% slower proportionally if I remember correctly.
Well Retro, you've got me wanting to get one of these newer versions now, so I think I'll go ahead and use your link--it's the surest way I think I'll get one just like yours, in that same format. Although I like the black one best, the blue has its own sleek charm to it, and it'll help me always differentiate properly between my three devices; it'll look great, like the ideal combo of them all, not to mention how I once had a black MP5 Player shell with an older X6 functioning inside it. I think it's cool that this is like both of my systems combined into one, with the good halves of both systems used and the bad halves left behind. Thanks for following up on improved X6's. I do like X6 better on the bottom of my device rather than MP5; looks cooler :) Can't wait to see your X12 video, and perhaps I'll be snatching one of those up too. Cheers.
PS -- I can tell you, if this one really is all like my MP5 built into an X6 shell -- that the composite video is better than the X6. It's kind of fuzzy looking, but it can be sharpened with the TV settings somewhat, and it doesn't have that blocky, pixelated look that the original X6 did. I can't remember if the old X6 could do this, either, but you can adjust manually the height and width of the AV output, to perfectly match the edges of the screen, which is surprising functionality considering it's a cheap device. This thing looks best on a CRT TV. Only downside is that it has low contrast, so in most cases you'll have to turn up your TV's contrast to make it look normal.
The AV cables are a bit odd, usually very short and cheap, but if you try using more common AV cables they usually work (except you have to adjust them so they're not fully in the socket...just weird). It's like they built a specific type of AV cable just to be optimized with this device, the only kind you can fully insert. The AV cabels for the PAP-K III Plus are identical and work perfectly, but they're like four times longer, so they're the best ones to use.
You are correct about the SNES pal vs ntsc issue. I have the updated x6 it runs every pal game I tested perfectly. This machine does a good job at snes emulation.
It suffers with megadrive games and can not keep a stable frame rate. Same goes for the CPS titles, There are frame drops in many games.
@@detjkimbell I've just ordered the updated X6 myself (hope it doesn't freeze like my original X6!) and also the X12, which should be here in less than a week due to priority shipping from China. Someone said in the video comments that the X12 can play some of the lesser Playstation games, which sounds impressive. I'm really into the X systems (heh, I like the sound of that, better than MP5) and I'm eager to see how much better these newer ones down the line are.
PS I wish there was a PAL version of Chrono Trigger.
Another great video👍 I like seeing you review all these knockoffs. Plus for the price a person pays the content on some of these things is pretty fair.
I'd agree. This plays a fair amount of game systems well for the price.
You said it didn’t come with a charging cable. But we watched you pull the cable from the box.
You have charged r-type 2 for the original gameboy, the gameboy color version is r-type DX!
Yep, a few other people mentioned that. I mistook the two. I'll add R-Type DX to my micro SD card for next time.
@@RetroCore Consider using a ROM manager and a known good database to audit and correctly rename the ROMs you already have. I suggest No-Intro DATs as the database and Romcenter for verifying a scattershot of files or clrmamepro if you intend on going for complete ROM sets.
I'm a simple man.
I see a Chinese knock-off video, I click Like & watch.
There's nothing wrong with that 👍

@Junior Graham No you haven't, liarbot.
Another good review. Thanks Mark.
No worries, Colin.
I have this one it's a pretty good game I recommend you to buy one
new improved soulja handheld!
It´s probably the same hardware of the old version, but with an improved firmware.
I would imagine so. It is good to see them improve it mind you. Normally these companies don't bother.
anyone knows how to upgrade the firmware?
@@makuchisoichi3649 I have no idea, you might need to hack it. Search the dingoonity board to see if they can help you
They're amazing nowadays compared to how they started out.
How did you get to run Gameboy Games my games don't seem to run. What format are you using them on.
Yo, let’s give a quick shoutout to the SEVEN KB-S300 Standard Keyboard.
What the difference feel that we got when play on android device with this console handheld
They might b working there way to an X-1....the ultimate in gaming emuration....does what others don't....⚡
Thank you once again Mark :) I would love a PowKiddy X18 review, if possible.
I'll see if I can get one
Mark you need to come up with something like Moore's Law, but for Chinese handheld units: Chinese knockoffs improve in quality and fidelity every 15 months?
Hehe, I think we'd have to base it on years. Every 3 years or so there's a slight jump in quality.
Another great review - informative and honest as always... just as predicted, you slowly become the main promoter for the Chinese video games products - pretty soon some Nintendo and SNK executives will knock your door bringing some beautiful ladies with them to negotiate about some marketing campaign with you, if you agree, those ladies would invite you to have some private meeting in some undisclosed "onsen" with them - a true formula of a typical Japanese AV LOL LOL LOL...
😍 If only that would really happen. Oh well, I can always dream
Good enough handheld, but you didnt really try Gameboy Colour roms, they are in GBC format (Rtype DX).
Ah, so R-Type DX was the colour release. I would imaging they work just fine to be honest.
@@RetroCore Υes its capable of running them perfect but please try one rom and confirm if they really work as its a different format than a standart Gameboy.
@@vasileios6301 I can confirm myself. For over a year I've owned one of these in a MP5 Player shell (instead of the X6) but internally it's all the same. The GBC games appear to run just as smoothly as the GB games.
@@Bro-cx2jc Awesome,thanks
I can also confirm that the GBC games run fine. I tried shantae on it.
Awesome Video as always.
Will phantasy star or older ff works on this?
Should do.
Finally a good question. I've been dying to see someone play a Final Fantasy game on this console.
how do you do a factory reset on this device. Ours is stuck on a startup screen saying "Generating Playlists" - man its frustrating
I'm afraid I don't own this any more. Normally there's a small pin hole on the casing somewhere. That's going to be the reset button if this device has it.
My very first X6 has the same error. It seems like only the oldest ones have this issue, I've gotten many different ones over the past few years and they're all fine.
As far as I can tell, it's not fixable. I tried letting it stay on until the battery finally just fizzed out into nothing (since the unit was frozen it couldn't shut itself down). Then I left it that way for a while, and then charged it back up and turned it on.
Still stuck. Seems like no way to fix this thing.
Gameboy colour roms have the *.GBC extension not *.GB
I know but isn't R-Type 2 a GBC game? Or did it get two releases?
@@RetroCore Not that I know of, there is a R-Type DX on GBC
That was the one I was thinking of. That comes with R-Type 2 I think.
Hi! It's working to connect 2 console via Bluetooth or wifi for a multiplayer game like street fighter, contra, final fight?
No, I'm afraid not.
Where can i get av jacks at for x6?
anyone knows how to upgrade the firmware?i have same one with older firmware that only has stretched full screen and small awful native resolution options
I don't know personally but maybe someone at the Dingoo forums could help.
I have that old one too lol but it's frozen XD
Try using the av out on a crt tv. It looks great that way, and the fullscreen option when hooked up to a crt will be properly scaled.
If you have no CRT (most likely) then try on an HDTV with 4:3 mode on.
how to reinstall firmware my crashed on the welcome screen help me please ???
Sorry, I don't know.
I’m really pissed off,my 11 year old brother just brought one of these that was marketed as a real PSP and he’s very upset
Man, poor kid. Well, we all make silly mistakes I guess.
Retro Core yeah I think most people experience something like this when they’re young but it’s really sad to see him go from so excited to so let down about something
yeah, I can understand. I hope he didn't spend too much on it.
And here i was as a kid happy with my 3 megadrive games a year
Jade Nepia haha yeah I’ve always been happy with what I get,but when he payed for something and received the wrong product,I can see his frustration
out of all the cheap mp5 players with this style menu that look like a psp or vita this would be the best one
Hey mr.Gameboy Colour you are tooooo old
So any chances of a teardown? Interested in seeing what it runs on
I'm afraid not. This machine is going to be sold.
It runs on recycled cardboard
So this is still the same stuff they have been doing since 2012 or so :P Looks exactly the same as mine from that period, if not the new menu, it would have been identical. Maybe it has got new processor, that is slightly faster.
By the way SMS Advance is your friend when it comes to playing Game Gear and Master System games on those handhelds. I wrote about it numerous times already, maybe you could check it out next time. PCE Advance is also avaiable, but I havent tested it.
Plus Im almost sure that simple rename of the .md into .smd does the trick. It did in my case.
Yep, renaming MD to SMD does work.
The case for these systems is the same as the old units but the insides are different.
@@RetroCore but I see they still equipped it with this TN screen :P Anyways as you mentioned - its fairly cheap, and you can have thousands of games on it, plus you are not forced to play build-in ones like in most NoaC based consoles. I think its safe to say things have certainly got better since 90s and cheap Brick games ;)
Thanks for the review !
Did you know that they still sell those brick games. Now they come with 80 in 1 varieties.

how can you do reset in this game
IchIs it possible to install a snes emulator?
Not gonna lie Might buy that not half bad actually if you know my intentions with the device
I think I'll hold on to my Vita for the tume being, thanks...
Not a bad choice. Beware of rogue X6's disguised as PSPs trying to invade your home; a crowd of them almost blasted my door down yesterday after I swore them off in favor of a Vita.
How to record a video?
I had a factory reset mine cuz it was lagging. Now every time I start it up it boots up in Japanese and I have to change it back to English do any of you guys know how to keep it on English so I don't have to change it every time it boots up?

LFWAO @ Chinese professionalism.
I used those earphones and the rings at the bottom were just sliding on the wire.
That's pretty bad.
@@RetroCore They actually feel quite comfortable but the rings weren't even glued, or the glue collapsed in cheap Chinese shipping from eBay.
anyone know how to change the button mapping on these via the .cfgb file it generates after you tell it to revert to default key settings? Can't actually change the key mappings despite the menu there saying you can... at least on the one i have. when i tried a megadrive game it only had direction keys and punch button but not the jump button mapped and with no way to set keys despite the fake menu setting it's kinda useless. I imagine you can edit the .cfgb in a hex editor but I can't find any info about it online. Any ideas?
You can't do it with a file as far as I know, but then again I'm not a master at file editing.
To remap buttons, you have to use the L and R buttons to cycle between the options on the input list. Then when you're done, go to the bottom of the list and select save changes or else what you changed will he reverted the instant you leave the remap list.
Newer models like the CBRS and bigger X series let you use the up and down arrows to cycle the inputs, but I'm guessing the older and smaller models limit it to L/R in order to prevent accidental remap settings.
@@Bro-cx2jc my X6 doesn't allow to change key mapping at all. Just tried what you said you can't even scroll down the list or anything. Only thing you can do is select restore default. I read on some forum somewhere you can't change it on this one because the firmware they used is expecting a touch screen input and these aren't touch screen devices. Thanks for the reply though.
@@ahoffman83 Is this the older X6 model that does not have a "scale" option for games, only fullscreen and original size? With smaller lettering in a more basic menu scheme?

Chinese knockoff devices go green and save the environment!!!
Plot twist: what if the cheap build quality of the devices is also because they use exclusively environmentally friendly materials? XD
@@Bro-cx2jc oh yes I bet that the reason why they use many used or overstock hardware here, with yellowish paper, cheap looking headphone (but quite mainstream back in day), and mini USB for charging, they must be recycle them when making these clone.

Honestly, these Chinese consoles would be quite good if they copied less on design and UI.
Imagine having the ability to tool and design a console, not doing fake speaker grills and creating a simple streamlined UI and theme that's not desperately trying to be a VITA/iOS hybrid running in a PSP 3Kish shell. Sure games still would be un-licenced and not legit but with a bit of optimization for emulation, Im sure they would end with a respectable product. Package with opensource cores and no roms, and you end up with a very mature retro console many in the west would be happy to get. There are a few out there like this, many are damn expensive tho. I wonder if there are people out there re-writing their own homebrew OS for these things with improved emulation and a sleeker UI..
I agree. Actually, some of these devices can be hacked and improved greatly with much better emulators and front end. There's a very good Dingoo forum that has tutorials on how to hack some of these Chinese devices.
I just realized today that when you get the Hyper Shot in Three Wonders, you AREN’T actually shooting Bananas.
Bananas? Now I'm confused 😅

At 8:59. You even see the peels fall to the side.
Haha, now I can see it.
"used the cardboard from another box"
my brain: DANGER DANGER, HIGH SKETCHINESS LEVELS DETECTED!
One note, you tried .bin and .md files, but what about .gen and .smd files?
Renaming .md into .smd works in my console, which seems to be almost the same as this one
Gen files? I didn't even know that was a thing. As KISSbestfan mentioned, renaming the MD files did allow them to work.
When one file type doesn't work, sometimes renaming it is all I need to do.
This is cool video game
A box in a box . old Chinese proverb
Yep. But back then the box probably had something nice in it.
Geez, it's 2019 and these things still cannot run CPS2 or Neo Geo emulators without frame skipping.
You can Also play Playstation games in this console
Is this an improvement over the old X6 ?
Not really. Pretty much the same.
Too bad it does not play PC Engine. Also too bad about the camera focus because it could make for a super cheap digital magnifier for those for us who are visually impaired.
I think that camera unit is just poorly installed. It should be as bad as it is.
This thing using MINI USB should have been a initial red flag.
It doesn't use that much power and the battery isn't that big. It's not bad. Even video file transfer rate is faster than I would have expected.
I would love this thing if it could DS games fairly decently, but i guess it wouldn't be great anyway because of the screen.
Nah, this would never run DS. It's way too weak.
@@RetroCore Yeah i know, it would be nice though.
@@RetroCore I feel like it may not be too far off in compatibility for some lighter DS games, though. For instance, it runs SFC Chrono Trigger fairly well, enough that I've run many hours into that game. Perhaps DS Chrono Trigger, if compatible, wouldn't stink too horribly. At least be somewhat playable perhaps.
Sadly it's not that simple. DS emulation even for a basic game is still much more resource hungry that SFC emulation.
