A new undercover investigation released by LCA exposes animal suffering at a breeding mill that breeds and sells tens of thousands of hamsters annually. Hamsters from these types of mills can end up in pet stores like Petco, PetSmart, and Petland.
Mill hamsters are kept in small, overcrowded, soiled cages with minimal shavings for burrowing. Female and male hamsters are repeatedly used for breeding. Hamsters who are sick, injured, over-bred, and deemed ugly, are routinely killed.
Hamsters are sensitive and intelligent individuals with complex care needs, however, hamsters are commonly bought as “starter pets” for children. The hamster industry exists to supply mass numbers of animals to consumers. Similar to the puppy mill industry.
Commercial small-animal mills breed various species of animals: hamsters, guinea pigs, skinny pigs, reptiles, fish, birds, rabbits, mice, and rats. These animals are treated as breeding machines who are only valued for their ability to bring in a profit.

never buy a pet from a store as long as there are shelters full of pets waiting for a home.

but where i live, there are no reputable hamster breeders near me, and all the shelters dont have any hamsters available currently.
Look on places like petfinder, many people rehome their pets on places like that.
In the 60's my brother had several fish tanks he bred hamsters in. Buying from a private person was really the only way to get one. He only made enough money to pay for their up keep. Then like everything someone saw money in it if you bred 1000's and shipped them everywhere, with no thought about their welfare. I remember him crying when he sold the very first one. They were loved but he had to quit because he worried people wouldn't care for them like he did. Some times the old ways were the best ways. What they do is horrific!
That's how it goes with everything that involves animals.... money -grubbers only see the profit the make, and not the animal suffering they cause.😢😢
As Ghandi said "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated" The human race becomes more and more disgusting all the time...all for the sake of making money, these poor creatures are subject this abuse....shame on us for allowing this to continue. 😥

Sadly, the answer almost always comes down to money. These mills wouldn’t exist if they didn’t make a profit. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Absolutely disgusting that this is even legal. Reminder to anyone looking for a hamster that there are ethical breeders who are certified by the California Hamster Association all over the country who prioritize quality of life and strong genetic lines for their hamsters. Please look to them if you want a pet.

No matter the industry as long as animals are seen as commodities this will always be! Never buy any animals from any pet store! There is literally a rescue group for every pet you can imagine. #adoptdontshop
Isn't it more valuable to encourage states to pass legislation for minimum care requirements instead of expecting people led protests to function?
I'd expect a video to link a petition or even socialize a proposed bill for minimum care requirements.
