SAILING IN THE EYE OF THE STORM | 28 HOURS ROUGH SAILING | SV VELA NAUTICA

  • Hello Seaplorers of Vela Nautica
    In this episode we sailed first time long distance since Vela Nautica got her refit.
    Unfortunately it was very rough and we encountered a storm.
    The tidal currents and the continental shelf in the bay of Cadiz made sailing very uncomfortable.
    Vela Nautica was thrown by crossing confused seas and overcoming waves.
    It became even more diffcult as more and more traffic came up over night and made navigating more tireing.
    It was not a fun sailing at all, but what they say is YOU ARE NOT A SAILOR IF YOU ONLY SAILED IN A CALM DAY.
    We where bound for Gibraltar, while considering to search shelter in the closer harbour of Cadiz we decided
    to go on and head for Gibraltar as we visited Cadiz before.
    And as always after rain there is sunshine and we droped anchor in sunny conditions under the ROCK OF GIBRALTAR.

    Are you supposed to leave your sail fully extended in a storm?

    I know the video never shows exactly how rough it was but 30+ knots can be pretty challenging. I did notice your autopilot wasn't moving much... I've done about 8000 miles in Super Maramu up and down the east coast of the US to the Caribbean and their autopilots move 2-3 times as much. I'm guessing that the motion on the 54 is just a bit better from a yawing perspective due to the wider stern. I am going to buy a 54 but haven't sailed one yet. You were able to put up the Staysail which would have helped somewhat.. although it didn't occur to me that you have to leave the cockpit to set it up (and bring back the stays). Can this be done before you leave the harbour while you are still sailing on the big Genoa? I really love your arch... way nicer than the Emek or Atlantic Arch ones... It looks very sturdy... does it move much? You were able to put 700W of solar on it?

    • @svvelanautica2374
      @svvelanautica2374  4 роки тому +3

      Hi Steve, Yes we got 750W of solar power on the arch. There is not the slightest shiver in this solid arch. The design is computer anaysed by fenite elements simulations aginst all kind of possible wave loads. The design finds a lot of admirers on every anchorage.
      When we left i did not calculate that we will get this bad weather. But now I always set the backstays in place when we go out. They can just stay in place even when the Jib is used. One hint: dont overtighten the backstays, they start to swing like guitar strings. its just enough to set them by hand before the staysail is pulled out. and give them a minimal tightness by winch.
      The AMEL 54 is a boat like on tracks in whatever conditions. I says this now after crossing the Atlantic, its imporant to balance the pressure point of the sails and the autopilot does not need to doo much.
      fair winds Oliver
