That’s one version of the origin story of the French 75. According to another legend the drink was created by the son of a New Orleans hotelier who had volunteered with the Escadrille d’Lafayette. The name in whichever legend you choose is a reference to the field gun.

I think you inadvertently hit on the next great step in this channel's evolution -- the Try bar! They only serve drinks featured on the channel, and there's lots of snacks (mostly Durian flavored unfortunately). And there's pictures of all the Tryers all over the place, and tv's always showing episodes, and trivia nights about the channel, etc. It's a blatant cash grab, and all that you guys have to do is stay home counting that money. (I'll be expecting a cut too, btw.)
I have found that a lot of folks who hate vermouth hate it for a few reasons. It is a fortified wine and needs to be refrigerated once opened. Once the bottle is opened, you have about a month at its peak then will start tasting off at around three or four months. If it is not refrigerated, you have even less shelf life, basically weeks. The first time I had a drink with vermouth in it I hated it. Turned out that the vermouth had been sitting on the bar for over a year. Finally researched the drink and learned a lot of great info that made for much better drinks.
lol yes this summer I tried the classic Cocktails instead of just something on the rocks, now just Vermouth is too sweet for me, but mix in a drink, I find it great
"For Medicinal Purposes Only", of course. During prohibition, the accepted alternative to the speakeasy was to go to your doctor and have him write a prescription for alcohol, whiskey, that is. The bottles even had handwritten prescription labels printed on them, stating, "For Medicinal Purposes Only."
I had heard the term “bathtub gin” once. I just looked it up: In addition, mixing grain alcohol, water, and flavorings in vessels large enough to supply commercial users had to be small enough for the operation to go undetected by the police. The common metal bathtub in use at the time would have been ideal as would have been a ceramic bathtub, hence the name, 'bathtub gin.”
I recall a story from a 90+ year old woman who grew up in The Great Depression/Prohibition time. She recalled a time where some random men was in their neighborhood asking people if they can use their garages/sheds to set up quick temporary Still/Brewery for a little cash. She said even though times was tough her dad refused to let them set up one on their property. She also said like naybe a week or 2 later after that the cops was at her neighbors house taking axes to barrels of alcohol and thet watched gallons and gallons of that alcohol poor down their driveway into the streets and it smelled horrible.
Maybe you should do an episode on "Mocktails" to celebrate the success of the Prohibition-Era Cocktails. There is a fairly sizeable trend here in the US for non-alcoholic mocktails and some of them are stunningly good.
Well ill be By Goshed Sean. That voice sounded like one of those Hollywood radio voice announcers from around 1940. Mainly from those old super hero crime fighting type shows.
Pagan seems like she is a little bit of a watch collector. Swatch/Omega Mission, S tier Casio, and super classy black/gold tank in this one (might start with a Ca).
I had no idea anyone would notice this but yes thank you. I have a very small and modest watch collection. Casio is absolutely god tier and I have a few ❤
You guys do know that it is the roarin 20s all over again & we’re all in it right ( 2024 ) … my ideal 20s feel would be in a smoke room with a high ball cognac cold no ice on a very cold winters day or night just sipping away & chatting it up with old friends .friends .
The French 75 was created during the Great War (as it was called until we began numbering them) in 1915 by barman Harry MacElhone at the New York Bar in Paris which later became the more well-known Harry's Bar. The recipe changed a bit during the 1920s with brandy sometimes used instead of gin -- which is my preference. I suspect the popularity of the French 75 was more in Europe than in the Prohibition-era USA. During the Prohibition years, there was an explosion of Italian restaurants all over the US and curiously, they were all permitted to offer wine to their customers. Culture, like life, will find a way whatever the laws may be.
Last place I had a French 75 it was mostly gin and pulpy lemon juice with some bubbles from the champagne. I didn't taste the syrup. It was OK. I do love them though. So yummy.
i save these Try drinking vids to my drinking nights. I never have the same drinks, but y'know, it's fun. Alabama here, but several of my Ancestors were from County Tyrone, (Omagh) , Grandpa still cussed in Gaelic.
When I made a French 75 it was Champagne, Brandy, Sugar cube and a dash of bitters. It is named after the famous 75mm fast firing French field gun from WW1
the video is to funny when they try something with alcohol in it a lot of humor and no matter who is sitting next to pagan she is always funny and happy
Solid golf clap for Sean's 1940s Hollywood newsreel voice.
All that was missing was the projector sound.
A Scottish person naming a drink after something French in New York is probably the most American thing I've ever heard of.
That’s one version of the origin story of the French 75. According to another legend the drink was created by the son of a New Orleans hotelier who had volunteered with the Escadrille d’Lafayette. The name in whichever legend you choose is a reference to the field gun.
In WW1 the AEF didn't bring their own artillery, so they used French 75s.
" work is the name of my husband" ...🤣🤣🤣....that is an all time TRY line...
" and I'm not doin' work today ".... 😂
You all are probably too young to know but Seamus did that voice he sounded like James Mason, the old time actor.
I am 46 and immediately thought James Mason when Seamus did that voice.
I absolutely came here to say this!
it's got to be Seamus doing Eddie izzard doing James mason.
Thank you! 100% correct, love James Mason, he had a great voice
Surprisingly, I’ve heard of James Mason and I’m a teenager. You’re absolutely spot on though
Seamus and Pagan are hilarious together!
Quality James Mason impression.
Darren desperately holding back a laugh during the"rim" conversation. Classic TRY Channel. Love it. Love from North Carolina USA.
I hope the water is subsiding and you all are in a position to put things back together. I saw Asheville was horribly flooded this morning.
Hope you’re ok from the flooding!!

Yep, pretty spot on. Chicagoans will do a lot to prevent spilling alcohol.
Pagan and Seamus... best pairing ever. A comedy cocktail!

Seamus was Hilarious. Hayley’s facial expressions are so good. The 1920’s era voices ( attempted ) also very entertaining.
Great Adam Ray impression from Darren in the intro

I would love to see a Part 2 to this. That would be the bee's knees.
The folks at the Try Channel had way to much fun with the word 'Rim' in this video!🤣👍
I loved Seamus doing the NEWS ON THE MARCH (old news reel) voice to describe the cocktails!
Pagan, if you ever get to Vegas, there's several very realist Speak Easy,

The Gin Rickey - Washington, D.C.’s signature cocktail. Never had it with rosemary, though.

There's a variation of the Sidecar called Between the Sheets. It includes Cognac, light rum and Tripple Sec.
