A few days after the tragedy that took the lives of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, emotions are still raw, and they'll likely stay that way for quite a while.
Not only are we awaiting updates on the legal procedures involving the alleged drunk driver who hit the Gaudreau brothers, but the 2024-25 NHL season is also set to start soon, which will be hard for every fan as they watch the Columbus Blue Jackets play without Johnny Hockey.
Throughout the next season, Gaudreau will likely remain among the hot topics, especially now that David Alter has started an interesting debate about the player's legacy in the NHL.
Indeed, on X, David Alter shared a post in which he states his idea to rename the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy after Gaudreau.

This award is given to the 'player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.'
Gaudreau won that trophy back in 2017, and it's the only individual award he won in his career.
Back in 2017, Gaudreau was 23 and won the Lady Byng Memorial after receiving only two minor penalties in 72 games with the Calgary Flames. He also led his team in points, with 61, including 18 goals.

Keep the current trophy as an annual one and make a new Gaudreau Trophy for career achievement in sportsmanship. it could come with a financial reward to be given to the players charity of choice
Excellent idea!!
That's a great idea
Keep the trophy as is. People just need to be off the emotional ride, and think rationally. It's better to make a Gaudreau award for community service against drunk drivers.
I've been really affected by the death of Johnny Gaudreau... If I've been affected by this death so much... I can't even imagine how Wayne Gretzky's will affect me when it happens... 😢
R.I.P. Johnny Hockey... ❤
@@luigivincenz3843
I'm fine with changing the name of the Lady Bing. I don't have a clue who that is/was.
Could be a Gaudreau trophy if we wanna make sure the entire family is included 🤷
he seemed like a guy that was universally respected by his peers... how about creating a new award in his name that rewards a player's character as voted on by all players in the league
agree
Here's the thing.. renaming trophies for someone who dies sets a precident that you'll have to live up to later. Should they have renamed the Vezina for Pelle Lindburgh when he was tragically killed? How about the Hart to the Gretzky (just because of his greatness...he won it enough in the 80's).. That's a flood gate to stay away from. Making a new trophy and category.. that's a different story...
Exactly. We don’t need sentimental, knee-jerk reactions to tragedies. We need stronger punishments for those that create them. There are other ways to honor J-Gaudreau’s accomplishments w/o erasing Lady Byng of Vimy (who donated the trophy and whose husband was a hero of the Great War) from the picture.
@@GizmoBeachTy, the fact that people are calling him a legend is a stretch too. Let’s be honest, even casual hockey fans know legends, Mcdavid, Connor Bedard, OVI, Crosby. But if you asked them who Johnny hockey was two weeks ago, many of them wouldn’t tell you who. He may be elite, but not legend or change an award (to this magnitude) after him.
I think in the future they should rename it or make a new trophy, but definitely not now or next year
The Byng is also not theirs to rename really. Yes the original was presented permanently to Frank Boucher (and destroyed in a fire) and she donated a new one and the NHL presented a new after her death. But the spirit and purpose of the award was HER creation.
@@GOCAPSDMVConnor Bedard?!? Not quite at “Legend” status yet! 😂🤦♀️ You think calling J.G. a legend, is “a stretch”…….but you put Connor Bedard in your list of “Legends”………….Now come on, that’s a bit of a stretch!!! One has played 11 seasons in the NHL and the other almost one season!! And I think you are very much mistaken when you think many people don’t know who Johnny Hockey was! If you love hockey and watch the NHL, you more likely than not, know who Johnny Gaudreau was.
No - some traditions should be kept around
Why not a new award named after Johnny instead?maybe for the best-performing later-round rookie?
(Cutoff would be pick 100 so guys drafted from 101)
The NCAA should rename the Freshman Award to the Johnny Gaudreau Award
I also agree with this, but the NCAA wouldn't be responsible for this, it would be some combination of the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committee, College Hockey Inc, or USA Hockey
If they do an anti drunk driving campaign then those games should also have no alcohol sales imo.
100 percent
Exactly.
It’s like NHL now: they wouldn’t let Vegas be called the Aces, but we’re bombarded with gambling ads at the rink and on TV. Double standard, much?
very good point. people are just not in touch with reality at all if they believe all fans are taking ubers home. hundreds of people drive home drunk after an nhl game.
@@doodlebob2023 It's the same standard I apply to gambling, where the NHL punishes players for gambline(all be it violation of rules/law) but now have gambling ads all over their broadcasts and arenas. Honestly, the refusal by team owners to not sell beer for one game may be one of the reasons an anti drunk driving tour doesn't happen.
@@GizmoBeach the hypocrisy is rich. Very easily could be the refusal of owners to not sell beer for a game that kills such a anti drunk driving campaign. They make a lot off cheap beer.
No. Make a new award, simply because few don't know who Lady Byng was, does not make it right to change the Trophy's name. I suggest something along the lines of the King Clancy award, for Gentlemanly Play and Living as a career achievement as others have suggested.
There is no timeline on grief. We all do it at our own pace. Just be mindful and don't let it engulf so that you can't do daily tasks, job tasks, and personal stuff. Get help if that happens. Please.
Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's loss hits harder than most and it will be a while before we can smile thinking of them.
Harder than most in what way? I mean, I feel for the family and will miss his talent....but I would be hit harder by almost anyone I know personally.
Not taking away anything from Johnny or Matt, but it is interesting pedestal we place celebrity.
Give it time: grief leads to poor decisions.
And the trophy wasn’t randomly named after Lady Byng. The award was her idea, and she donated the trophy.
The Jackets also lost one of their goalies in July 2021. Matiess Kivlenieks was killed while protecting a fellow players' wife and unborn child from an errant firework.
Why rename a longtime award…particularly one named after a woman who supported professional hockey at a time when the sport really needed it? My suggestion is create a new Johnny Gaudreau Trophy for the most improved player…an important category that is currently not honored by the NHL.
Rather than rename an award, perhaps the NHL in tandem with the Family of Johnny and Matt could create a new award named the Gaudreau Award to be given to the NHL player who best exemplifies the spirit of Johnny and Matt in hockey play, family and community. As I learn more about Johnny and Matt they both gave their best to hockey thru playing and coaching. Just an idea.
This right here
I would be ok with that. Most really don't know who "Lady Byng" is.
I remember Conan interviewed Gretzky and he asked him, and he's like "I have no idea"
This is the answer
as a Canuck now in the US, I STILL dont know who that person is. Keep the trophy as it is. In reality, a majority of hockey fans only know the words MVP etc. and not the title of the trophy.
Lady Byng donated the trophy
A fan on Reddit suggested that Gaudreau should be the namesake for most outstanding Freshman in college hockey, and I agree with that.
0 reason to rename established trophies, and a complete disservice to Lady Byng herself
Prior to the 1967-68 season there was one MVP trophy for the 6 team league. We now have four divisions with 8 teams each. Perhaps it is time to consider honouring the MVP for each division with the trophy for the Metropolitan division named for the Gaudreau brothers.
No. She donated the trophy.
Lady Byng gave a trophy to a sport she never played for players who play the game clean. Play with class. Johnny deserved it. But his passing doesn't mean we should rename the trophy. God knows a lot of really good guys have won this, and Johnny was not that unique. Sad we lost him, but make new award for the "Spirit of Hockey*. Find the guy who combines what the Byng is about with charity and public face. Gaudreau's joy goes beyond the Lady Byng
No, absolutely not. I do think creating a new award named after Gaudreau would be appropriate.
Make a new Gaudreau Trophy for the most assists in a season. He owns the record for the most assists in a season by a LW.
No. Robbing Peter to pay Paul. Create another trophy in his name
You would have my vote. I have no idea who the Lady Byng is as well so the trophy didn't mean much. The Gaudreau trophy would be more meaningful because everyone knows the quality of the kind of person Johnny Hockey was.
The Blue Jackets should retire his number when the Flames first visit.
Tragedy yes but lets not go nuts here, leave the Lady Byng alone
Absolutely not. Let the family grieve and let cooler heads prevail. One day, create an award honoring the contributions of those who work in minor hockey named after the family.
no disrispectful to lady byng.... create a gaudreau trophy first presented by theo fleury
Viscount Byng of Vimy commanded the Canadian Corps at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. He was later appointed Governor General of Canada. His wife Viscountess Byng donated the trophy for the 1924-25 season. Lady Byng was an avid hockey fan who chose the first winner of the trophy. When Frank Boucher won it seven times in eight years, she gave him the original trophy permanently and donated a replacement. When she died in 1949, the NHL donated a third version of the trophy and renamed it the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. It is entirely inappropriate to rename a trophy with this much history based on a gut reaction over what is, admittedly, a senseless tragedy, especially since Johnny Gaudreau won the trophy once. Besides Boucher there are eight players who have won the Lady Byng three or more times. Find a different way to honour Johnny Gaudreau. A trophy for American College hockey might be appropriate, or possibly a scholarship program that will allow young players to attend the College of their choice would be a more appropriate way to honour both Johnny and Matthew together. But don’t touch the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy.
They need to make the Geaudreau award for the player showing the best sportsmanship. That would be the most highly regarded for not only their incredible achievements of that season, but also the off ice kindness displayed by the winner. Renaming the Lady Byng is not fair to the woman who donated the trophy. If this trophy were to get made, I would have the requirement for being nominated for at least one other trophy ( that doesn’t mean you have to win one to win the Geaudreau award). This would be a good compromise since we preserve history while also honoring the superstar Johnny Geaudreau who tragically died in a bike accident along with his brother. This is just my idea anyway
Sorry, I cannot agree. Yes this is tragic, Johnny was a great player and I enjoyed watching him here in the Saddledome, but no, I don't think this is the right thing to do. Both the Flames and Blue Jackets should retire #13, that I would welcome.
I'd say it's probably best to leave the name of the Lady Byng Trophy alone, as tragic as his loss is, I don't think we are at a place to rename a trophy after him. There is a lot of other things that can be named after him starting with his hometown, the pro-team he played for and so on....
It's a forgone conclusion that this man will have a statute made and displayed in his honor inside or outside of the Bluejackets arena, and his jersey number retired. But that's not enough because his life won't be honored constructively with accolades, right now.
Could a new trophy be added? Sure...but it would need to thread with something Gaudreau actually did in his life, so for example if he was very active in children's charities/medical research...then perhaps a trophy named after him that's honoring an NHL player who did the most work in that particular field would be appropriate.
But that requires research because if certain NHL players of the past did a lot of work in that realm before Gaudreau, then that may not be the logical thing to do. Can't dismiss what others may have done because of the circumstances surrounding Gaudreau's death.
This is all hypothetical from me because I don't know his off-ice dealings regarding what time he invested with charities.
The most noble thing for the NHL to do is put together a organization that will be HIGHLY funded to mitigate drunk driving & fund alcoholism treatment programs in his name.
I think tackling the problem that was the cause of his accidental death is what's needed. Evidently despite the work that has been done, the laws that have been passed (and those that still need to be passed) and all of the cautionary messaging that dates back to at least the 1980's (the formation of MADD was in 1980...44 years ago) clearly it isn't enough. People still drink and drive out there and people like Gaudreau are getting needlessly killed...every damn day.
Gaudreau's legacy may be best served by confronting and resolving the problem of alcohol abuse...it's a massive task, but as we can see, it's still a big problem out there that needs perhaps some out-of-the-box solutions.
Fully support the idea of creating a new trophy in his honor but I disagree with renaming an existing trophy.
It's sad but he is not the only star to have died tragic so big nooooooooooo to renaming it
Tragic, but no let’s not start renaming things. Maybe a new trophy of some kind.
don't entirely disagree
Terrible idea. The drunk driver removes the person who donated the trophy's name from it? Absurd idea and just giving more power to the drunk driver. Gives a message that if you drink enough you can start changing the names of trophies...
Dudley Garrett, Norbert Sterle and Joe Turner are NHL players who died in service during WW2. Name awards after them before we name them after a guy who died riding his bike at night.
I understand the meaning and intent behind it but its not a good idea. We might as well rename every trophy every 10 years, name the Vezina the Kivlenieks trophy then . A new trophy I think is more meaningful, something like the "Johnny Hockey award" or "Gaudreau" trophy. I think the "Gaudreau," nicknamed the Goodie, would be best because it honors Johnny but it also honors his brother who cant be forgotten in all of this .
Love Gaudreau but if it's changed it should be changed to the Bergeron. Considering he won it or was nominated so many times. Gaudreau was amazing no disrespect. Loved him! Especially at BC. I'm a BC Fan. Maybe an award where the player who wins, gets $ and can donate to whatever charity.
I like Lady Bying trophy as is…. Lady Bying forever
It's probably the most high profile trophy in men's sports named after a woman so I don't know if that happens (also I think he'd need multiple wins for that to happen). I think a USA Hockey honour or even the Hobey Baker is probably more likely.
The Lady Byng has a history of over 100 years of history it shouldnt be changed, a new award for the Gaudreau brotherswould be fitting
I won't put forth an opinion about whether or not this idea is a good one; it's not up to me but I will say that I'm very much in favor of renaming these trophies and awards from time to time. Not every few years like arena names but I think every 25-30 years or so is a respectful amount of time.
People will argue "tradition!" against such moves but I'm of the opinion that's just a crutch and an excuse for not evolving with the times. Most of these awards were named after people who modern hockey fans have no knowledge of whatsoever and there have been hundreds of people who've moved through the game since that time who are every bit as deserving of such an honor.
These people who the awards are named after have been honored sufficiently by now. It's time for some different people to be honored. Incidentally, I feel the same way about our money. Change those faces up once in a while.
No. He won it one time. Johnny Gaudreau was a really good player. But he has never been Crosby, or Bossy, or Lafleur, or Dionne. He died tragically. It is horrible, but people shouldn't lose their perspective. He was a B+ player, not an A or A+ player.
Rename it, and change it so that players or refs vote on it - since they'd know. As it is now, it's basically "who had few penalty minutes this year?"
At first I was in favor of renaming the award. But now that I know that Lady Bing is literally the one who donated the trophy in the first place and not just a random chatelaine, it doesn't make much sense to change its name
Completely in favor of naming the Hockey East MVP in his memory. One of only 3 two-time winners of the award.
I believe we need to find a way of honouring Johnny Gaudreau because he lived and not because he died. I see no honour in such a senseless loss to the NHL, the hockey world, but most of all those who knew and loved the brothers. Rather than changing the name of a trophy there could be a honoured place in the Hall of Fame for the brothers Gaudreau. Certainly the BlueJackets will find something appropriate as will the Flames and Boston College but we must never forget the loss of Matthew. It might be possible for the NHL to sponsor a scholarship in the name of the two to a New Jersey recipient.
Nah do a new memorial trophy dude was having a hall of fame career. While being a dope dude. The Gaudreau family memorial trophy
Keep Lady Byng And Not Anything Else.
I'm for either renaming the trophy or creating a new one. I don't believe it's too extreme for Columbus to retire 13. He chose them, and his untimely death will cast a shadow over that team for decades. I don't think the team would want to give out #13 anytime soon anyway
Nah I’d say a new Gaudreau trophy, no Johnny, and make it for the player who shows the most skill
Unfortunately no.
Case and point: one of the very first winners of the trophy won it seven times in a row…. But I can understand the reasoning.
And that guy got to keep a replica of the trophy for his outstanding sportsmanship.
HELL NO! I hate that Gaudreau's life was senselessly ended by a drunk A-hole, but he was a highly overrated player that was already in serious decline even at just 31 years of age. Leave Lady Bing alone! She doesn't deserve to be erased from history because of some drunk driver, and Gaudreau simply wasn't good enough to warrant a major award being named after him. A local hockey rink in his home town, and maybe another in Calgary? Sure. Those would be more appropriate tributes. Even a team honour of some kind in either or both cities would be ok, but not a major NHL award that's already in remembrance of somebody else. You people that want to erase others from history are pure idiots!
O.K. man .... Just breath & relax ... There's no need right now to change or make up new trophys !! Let the healing stage continue & give the Gaudreau Family there privacy. I'm sure some kind of Large Remembrance / Admiration token of respect for Johnny will be addressed by the NHl in the near future !!!!!!
Honestly a dumb idea. Why would they? People always propose radical ideas after a death. Want to rename it? Sure, but don't do things out of emotion. There are plenty of more deserving players and multiple winner who would deserve this honor than Gaudreau.
A new throphy should be made That is voted on by the nhlpa instead of the phwa
How about the Johnny award, going out to the most sportsmen like throughout the year?
Instead of selling beer opening night they should sell purple Gatorade and donate the profits to people affected by drunk driving.
no question that this is a tragedy, but if this doesnt happen and he goes on to have a full career, is anyone having this conversation about naming an award after him? There is way more people in the history of the game who should have awards named for them
I’m not a fan of renaming awards, especially based on recent events. Unless the Byng family asks for it to be changed, I’d leave it alone or maybe create a new award. I think there is already a huge contingent of fans who still hold a grudge against the league for shedding the names of Adams and Norris, Patrick and Smythe, and Wales and Campbell. Granted, Gaudreau’s name is more meaningful than geographic references, but the erasure of history is still there.
I really like the idea of the NHL launching a campaign against drunk driving, whether explicitly tied to Matthew and Johnny or implicitly. Try to extract some good out of a bad situation.
make a new trophy, for the athletes that defy the odds during a season.
That’s more or less what the Masterton trophy is.
No, keep the traditional name.
The NHL can find other ways to honor him.
i also wouldn't mind making a new trophy thats like the Walter Payton award in honor of Matthew & Johnny call it the Gaudreau Trophy, awarded to a players community impact off and on the ice!
I dont think Canada would let that happen. They're a bit territorial.
I say they make a new trophy that for honorable, compassion, and respect like make feel like the Walter Payton NFL man of the year award but NHL way.
Sometimes I feel the Conn Smythe Trophy can be renamed if they want too.
The Lady Byng is probably the trophy I would be totally fine with them renaming after Johnny.
100% agree
Rather of a already existing prize change...they should retire nr 13 completely and reward future talents with scholarships in his & brother's name so they can play hockey in college while they studying then receiving rookie contracts to the league
No.
if memory is corerect i believe it goes emporeror or empreess/king or queen then duke then count then viscount then baron but i could be wrong
No
Johnny and Matthew need to be remembered for a long time. Johnny's impact on hockey in Calgary, Columbus, New Jersey, and on hockey fans around the globe needs to be tangibly remembered. YES!
Great idea.
I read somewhere where it should be voted by the nhlpa, instead of the media. So maybe make a new throphy?
I also like to the calgary and columbus game in November to be nationally broadcasted. I know calgary will retire his number, I just not sure if columbus will
Might be a little counter productive to name it after him as long as they continue to take money from alcohol sponsors and sell booze at the games, yes let’s get the fans all boozed up for them to drive home after the games….
I think Marie Evelyn Byng would have been fine with it.
I am Evelyn Bing, and I endorse this post.
I like this idea. Especially as this season is the 100th anniversary of when the Lady Byng was first awarded, which was in 1924/25 to the Ottawa Senators Frank Nighbor.
The Johnny Gaudreau Memorial trophy. I like the sound of that.
If ever there was a time, or reason, for a trophy to be re-dedicated, this is it. It is time. Great Idea!
NO. lol god no
My 2 cents. Keep the Lady Byng name this season, change it next season. With the family's blessing ❤
Excellent ideas.
lol calm down
Definitely no
Yes, Call it the Johnny Hockey Award.
Yes.
Every time I hear Lady Byng… I always think: “Female Search Engine”.
Perhaps make a new trophy.
Who is lady bing anyway?Johnny Gaudreau memorial trophy sound very good! #TeamYes
Uh no.
no, of course not. Nice gesture, but leave the trophy name alone
No.
Yes.
