Actually, the judges were on to something by telling her not to shout. When she performed "I never loved a man" for Aretha Franklin in 2008 (?), she said Aretha pretty much told her the same thing. You can hear the difference between when she performed that song for Aretha then and when she did it for her again at the BET Honors in 2014. I suspect that's probably why Aretha was giving her the OK sign at the end of the performance, but I don't know if that's the case. For me, personally, I am able to hear the difference in JHud's singing. She is belting more flawlessly now rather than shouting. Yeah, there really is a difference.

I won't compare to Patti because I don't know her well enough. but what I can say from what I hear, is that JH HAS a powerful and big voice BUT, she's doing too much, like screaming, and she doesn't need to. You can see it's not a natural belting: you can see it in her mouth placement, in her face and in her body. you don't feel love, you feel that she's trying to convince... alomost like angryness. And she doesn't need to!
She took criticism from the judges very well, she always remained humble and simply gave it her all each and every time she got up on the AI stage to sing! That's why she became the massive superstar that she is today, and I really enjoy watching her on The Voice as a coach.

It is 2012now.It doesn't matter now what anyone said back then does it?Jen is anointed by the Lord to sing and there was no stopping His plan for her! I am a singer and let me tell you,I get goose bumps when listening to her! I just loved eveything about her way when she was on American Idol and said to people then:"This Jennifer Hudson is already a star! She dosn't have to win on American Idol.No matter who ends up winning if not her; he will be end up being the most famous of all someday. "
I loved her performance. Awesome, powerful voice.
