    Great review. I was reluctant to take the plunge only because I hadn't been that impressed with the last Blu-ray edition. After hearing your thoughts I went ahead and ordered the 4k. Thanks for the review. 😃👍

    I loved your review, Jeff. I know almost every idiosyncrasy of Grease. I've been watching many versions of this awesome movie since I was about 6 years old. And, I can answer your questions about the audio.
    After George Lucas gave his original Star Wars trilogy the THX treatment & re-released them to theaters back in 1997 for the first film's 20th anniversary, he contacted Grease director Randal Kleiser (his old college roommate) to invite him to give Grease a new digital makeover for its own 20th anniversary re-release.
    The story goes that many of Grease's original celluloid sound elements were unusable, having been stored in the vault in metal canisters for 20 years. A baking process worked to a great degree, but ultimately, some sounds had to be re-created.
    Jump ahead to the 40th anniversary restoration. Apparently, a 70mm master mix of the original 1978 audio was found at Paramount, and slightly tweaked just a little bit. So the sound you're hearing on this new 4K transfer, is pretty much how the film originally sounded before the THX fiasco.
    One noticeable difference is in the opening beach scene, as Danny says, "It's only the beginning." Pay attention to the music behind him. There are extra notes playing that you probably never heard before. That's because in the 20th anniversary edition, the soundtrack album version of Love Is a Many Splendored Thing (which ends with such an abrupt segue on the album that I originally thought my record was skipping) was used, and the last note had to be stretched out to score Danny's dialogue.
    The extra notes you can now hear in the 40th anniversary restoration, were only available on a longer recording of the song that appeared on the B side of the original 45 of Hopelessly Devoted To You. You can actually listen to it at ua-cam.com/video/Ta0JwJwBmXk/v-deo.html.
    The sound of the engine during Greased Lightning is left over from the 20th anniversary remix, but balanced much better, as you can tell. Same goes for the sound of Kenickie's lighter. That was never audible before 1998. The rest of the 20th anniversary sound effects during Greased Lightning have thankfully been kept out of the 40th anniversary.
    Here's one last notable tidbit about the sound. After Blanche gets carried off the dance floor & Danny and Sandy take center, listen closely and you can hear Bowser MCing. It's buried deep in the music mix, though. My own opinion about why it's so buried, is that I believe Randal Kleiser wanted to recreate the old VHS experience there. I say that, because Bowser's MCing was turned up to a normal volume in ABC's original 1980s broadcasts of the film. But I've never heard it in any "uncut" versions.
    You mention how well the colors pop. And my favorite thing about that, is how well you can finally see all of the colors in the T-Birds insignia. Thanks again for your outstanding review.

      Scott Aber, Thank you so much for the info. I had heard about Lucas and Kleiser before, but couldn’t remember the details. Truly appreciate you taking the time to add these details!!

    • @scottaber85
      @scottaber85 Рік тому

      @@TheHealthLife The insignia has always contained blue outlines around the T and quote marks, as well as a blue bird. It's just that color timing of past eras, especially on/for TV, couldn't display them properly. The only time the logo is all one color is during Greased Lightning, and those logos were appliques while the guys' other jackets were hand-painted on.

    Thanks for your detailed great review. Only just been released here in Australia, June 13. Definite purchase for me. I remember being "dragged" along to the movie at the cinema in 1978, I was 22 years old ( showing my age!). It struck a note with me. Sure it's cheesy and schmaltzy, but it's just a great fun movie and the music is fantastic. Over the years I've found kids are drawn to the songs in Grease. Great entertainment!

    I watched a friend's copy. Thought it was pretty awful honestly. It has a sort of vignette blur effect (I don't know what it's called but it's where the edges and peripherals are blurred to draw attention to the center). And some scenes were low-resolution. Like not even 720p bad. I've heard of this happening on other 4Ks so I doubt it's just an issue with the copy I watched.
    Any chance you could rewatch the beauty school dropout part and check for this? This is where half the scenes were extremely low res.

    Films At Home. Hello again Jeff, another thing i find about the new Grease:
    They corrected via CGI the coca cola/pepsi problem in the background of the "frosty palace" sequence. In previous releases they blur it out, in this one they have literally superimposed the pepsi logo into the background flawlessly, Jeff could/would you take your time and make a quick A/B of this scene with the old Blu-ray and write me about this issue?
