  • Famed therapist and author Terrence Real continues his discussion of the modern struggle to grapple with masculinity, spoken just before the release of his bestseller "I Don't Want To Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression." This is an exclusive recording of the 1997 Minnesota Men’s Conference. Register and attend the next Conference by visiting www.minnesotame...
Founded by Robert Bly in 1984, the Minnesota Men’s Conference celebrates the telling of old stories, the gifts of poetry and music, and opening our hearts to grief, wildness, and joy. We all have a yearning for lives of richness and meaning; this five-day conference is a unique opportunity to enrich ourselves in a community of other men.

I am eternally grateful for each new video you guys put out. They bring to life the books I have read and begun to attempt to put in to practice, failing often. I am astonished by the friendship and co-mentoring of authors and artists I am fond of and studying closely while in my wunderkrammer in Jinan, early in the morning, up with the sun: Bly, Moore, Some, Real, Rivera, Meade.
A few of the brethren that keep me accountable look fwd to a reunion in the camps of Minnesota. Until then all thanks for your sharing of these streams.

This is not gender based. Shaming a child for their feelings creates loss of the true self. A development of a false self as a defense against the shame (masterson). Shame turned inward = depression shame tuned outward is controlling others. (A part of narcissism, they can't look inside and have no insight.) yes no intimacy which is more than just sex.

Thank you for this- I am a woman and was also the "Slave God" in my family. I think this is a genderless phenomenon. I have an ex-stepmom as well as Great Aunt and and couple of aunts (all of whom I no longer speak to because of the exploitative and abusive nature of their behavior) do the emotional incest thing to me as early as my tweens, my mom may have slipped into that as well from time to time...

I think women can go between the two as well I.e. shame and grandiosity.

      It’s a hall of mirrors
Time to step outside and rewrite that narrative.

There is no woo woo in this whatsoever-
All grounded, frank insights into oneself.
      Being self aware, cognizant.
      No disconnect, detachment from reality.
Maybe too soulful for your application-
