I grew up with an outhouse in a corner of my grandparents back yard. We also had one within a bldg at my house. With 10 kids and 2 adults and only 1 bathroom in our ranch-style house, we needed that outhouse plenty of times! They weren't too bad if you didn't mind cold air blowing up your ass! 😂 I loved all the tree trimming in this video, Alex. It's so satisfying to see the yard open up after clearing out the trees.

That wasn't clearing a yard, that was clearing a jungle 😂.
I am 69 years old, born and raised in the mountains of East TN (Polk County) and we had an outhouse and drew water from a well, heated water for baths on a wood stove, until the early 70s, when I was in high school. We finally moved to the "flatlands" in an old mill house that had indoor plumbing.
Outhouses are still very much in use to this day in many areas of the US.

My grandparents used their outhouse until 1970 when his arthritis got too bad to get up in the middle of a cold winter night.
We had a well to and a pump had to prime the pump but these kids think they have it soo hard.they don't no what hard is.went to school with holes in my sho es back when the heels were put on with nails so it was almost a relief when ur heel fell off cause u weren't getting the nails all the time jagging u
Yea I forgot abot that we had 4 rooms in a garage and we'd heat water on our wood pot belly stove in a basin so u could get washed.my poor mom had to go thru that for my dad.
I have a piece of property out in a small town and we all have wells oh my God so an outhouse would not be totally a thing of the past even to this day it just depends how far out you live how much you want to spend and deal with your ingenuity oh my God you yuba City slickers you think that it is such a foregone concept. I was in Germany as a child and lived in a village where outhouses were not uncommon and this was 1965 folks and you did not have hot running water you heated water in a water tank. This is why people have a hard time with Americans when you go to other countries is that there is more than one right way to live and this is what a missionary told me there's more than one way to do something and it's the right.
It's most definitely an outhouse. I've used many of them at my grandparents, aunts and my parents house. We had one up until about 1964 in Baton Rouge LA. We got indoor plumbing in 1965.

I will be 80 years old in a couple of months. Having been born in 1944 in the foothills of the Ozarks of Arkansas we didn't have any kind of indoor plumbing. We used an outhouse and well bucket to draw our water. My Mother cooked on a wood burning stove .We also heated our home with a wood burner. We had no electricity. When we moved to Michigan in 1953 , we thought we were rich! LOL. Great clean up /clearing job !!
I am 79 years old and my parents had an out house on property in country out from St Louis Mo. we had indoor plumbing for the house hold cooking and cleaning and showering. We also were a family of 8 so the outhouse was handy. This was in 1952.
My grandparents built a new house in the fifties but before that, they had an outhouse, a well, a hand pump for indoor water and a wood cook stove. When my great-aunt passed, we bought her house, and though she had an indoor bathroom, there was an outhouse at the back of the yard. The funniest part is the fact that it was a three-holes! Can you fathom spending time in an outhouse with two other people?! HA! We used old Sears catalogs for toilet paper!

We have a 2 seater outhouse at our cabin on a remote island in Saskatchewan. I learned that when 1 hole was filled the second seat went into use until the first composted down with the aid of a layer of lime.
My family had an outhouse until I was about 12, I am 71 now. I can still remember having to walk thru a bunch of trees to get to it. Also I remember when we put in a septic tank and having to help did the drainage lines . It was a family affair , which everyone was either digging or carrying buckets of dirt away from the lines until the pipes were layer. The septic tank and lines are still in the ground now, I own the land which I grew up on and if I remember right, we did not get sewer in our neighhood until I was married and moved out of state. Things were pretty hard back then but we never knew it. I was about 13 when we got running water and an indoor toilet.That was in the middle of 1960’s. Enjoyed your video.
In the early 60's we went to Mississippi to visit my moms' side of the family. No indoor running water, the outhouse was about a 5 minute walk from the house. We took a bath in a big galvanized wash tub, after you used the bucket to draw water from the well. No electricity, this was a real culture shock for us kids. Never have forgotten that trip! Makes you really appreciate Modern conveniences. Still do appreciate them all, but realize I could live without them if I had too.
Hi, Karen - did you heat up the water that you put in the metal tub? We all had to share the tub in our house. 3 kids at a time. I can't imagine the outhouse being so far away if you had waited too long to head that way! 😂
@PhoenixRising734 yes the water was heated on a wood stove. There were 10 kids in that house, they wanted it far away, for that reason...there were also "honey pots" for the night time if needed. You tried not to use them, due to the fact you had to clean your own!
I can remember as a child using the outhouse at my uncles farm in the 1950s. They had indoor plumbing but as a kid not having to go inside to use the bathroom was fun and we got back to playing faster!

Sure, there was one growing up on the farm........40-50's. Dad eventually installed a bathroom with a tub! The farm life.....no big deal.
Yes it is an outhouse. My mother grew up using one in the 1930's. As for the RC Cola bottle, those came out in the 1930's as well. Now they cost up to $25 per bottle. Great find and well done on the job.

A proper old thunderbox no less! Noisy in a storm due to the traditional tin roof. I have a modern day version serving my visitors to my UK garden office. Simple to care for and always smelling sweetly of sawdust due to clever Scandinavian separation plate. Best loo ever! Thank you for helping this lady with her garden. 😁

Absolutely, that's definitely an outhouse. We still have one on my dad's farm. Keep it maintained, and up, for out field workers, on the tractors or mowing hay, and need "to go" 😂 You have to put lime in the pits, to keep smell, and from filling up, every so often

Great transformation Alex. Wow so much trees/brush to contend with. Yes it is definitely an outhouse. I used an outhouse 55-58 years ago, in Union town PA. It was my grandmother's.
My grandparents, in town, had a toilet outside with bucket collection every morning early, but, grand parents on plot had one away from their house with spiders, snakes etc, and a fire oven by the back door so the kitchen and bathroom had hot water. That granddad was a water deviner, used a forked branch from his apple tree.

In your rural, backwoods areas alot of places never had electricity, running water or bathrooms even up to the 80’s. My grandparents had a house in Maine, no electricity, no plumbing and the dreaded outhouse. It cost to much money to run poles to these areas, so they went without. They pumped to get water, used kerosene lamps, very rustic, more than likely it is still like that in the extreme remote parts of places. There’s probably 100’s if not more in the backwoods of Tennessee still like this. Great job clearing the trees, great job on the yard.

That definitely looks like an outhouse. (Also called a privy) back in the 1920s they still used them. However, as far back as the early 1800’s when the privy was getting full, the owner tossed old bottles, dishes etc. in them, covered with lime and backfill dirt. Now days, MANY people look for the spot the privy was on to excavate and retrieve the old glassware and vintage items. ( there is good money in some of those privy’s, some bottles worth THOUSANDS! 😊
It is definitely an outhouse. I don't know what year they were replaced by modern facilities; but in rural areas they are commonly used in orchards and remote areas. They, for the most part, have been replaced by portable toilets. In the remote parts of the country, wooden outbuildings are used.
I was just listening to a podcast today about these guys who uncover old outhouses in Brooklyn, New York, of all places. It seems their locations were well documented in the 1800's. With permission from today's owner, they dig up the yard and discover old glass and pottery and marbles and porcelain doll heads and other treasures, along with the old wooden latrine. Fun & fascinating past time, I imagine.
Yep, that’s an outhouse. It depends when they could afford or were offered indoor plumbing in the home. There would be some historical treasure in that outhouse pit! Great find

My grandparents had one, but finally got an indoor sometime in the early 60's. Of course they were living way out in the country and were very poor. I remember using their outhouse when we visited as a youngster, (5-10-ish) (I'm 73 now). I remember the cold draft cooling the bottom in the winter time. That RC cola bottle was probably from the 50's or 60's.

Yes, it looks similar to the outhouse we had and still used in the sixties in Arkansas. We had a shower and running water. When my Aunt Vea came to visit she drove to town and used an indoor bathroom. About a mile away.

Your Aunt Vea and I think alike. The 3-holer at a lakeside campground was so stinky, I drove 3 miles several times a day to a convenience store on the edge of the nearest town just to use its indoor (and unstinky) toilet!
If you close off that toilet, make sure to run a vent pipe down as far as you can or the old methane gas can build up & bad things can happen!!😂 Great job on all your transformations! Thanks for all you do.
I used one at my Stepgrandmother and Stepaunt's house in the 60s. I remember when they got a bathroom built on - it was such a small house that it was right off the kitchen. But it was well worth it!

The farm I grew up on had an outhouse until the late 50''s .
I’ve watched other channels that dig for old bottles and old outhouses are a perfect spot for that. After indoor plumbing started people would then use the deep holes in the outhouse to dispose of “trash” items such as broken plates and jars and bottles. The bottle you found is a really cool find.

Ask for the outhouse. It all depends on when public or city water was available in that area cause long before there was city or public water. You had to drill your own Wells when there was a well. Wow, you didn't have flesh of water for an outhouse. It was just a hole that was dug and a shack was put over the top of it once. The while you know the whole fills up. They would Bury it move the shack and dig another hole and put it in its place. outhouse is never really went out and plumbing didn't just kind of get in the way it was just a matter of when an actual modern home was built-in the place of what was originally on that property.
Believe it or not, there are areas that still use out. Homes in the united states do have either a well that flushes all of their troubles away, but they have to pay for city/County sewer systems.

The only places I've seen outhouses, which are modern portable versions are at camping grounds, private cabins located in remote areas and at fairgrounds, but I've never seen an original homestead version at a private residence. This is a first! Thank you for sharing.

Definitely an outhouse and they still exist for those who go camping or are living off the grid. However the one in this video I suspect stopped being useful when indoor plumbing was installed probably in the late 60s to early 70s. I remember my aunt and uncle had a functioning outhouse well into the late 70s. RC bottle looks like it could have been from the late 60s. Cool find! Using the outhouse today would not be wise as it looks like it has been sealed closed.
In your part of the country, Alex, I’m surprised you’ve not seen one before. They’re not relied upon like they used to be but I’m sure there are more in active use than we could imagine, even today. Thirty-five years ago I was using one as a girl of ten on Girl Scout sleep overs mere miles from home. And that was in the late eighties.

My grandparents had an outhouse in use until the 1970's on their farm! In the 70's they had an indoor bathroom and tub put in. My parents also had an outhouse at their lake cabin until the early 2000's when code laws changed and it could no longer be used. An indoor bathroom was installed.

hubby's grandparents also had an outhouse and no electricity until the mid 70s. I should know the year since I sometimes forget and mention a tv show I watched as a kid, and he always reminds me of what year his grandparents had electricity and indoor plumbing in. only good news is he didn't walk uphill both ways in 3 feet of snow to go to school :D
Oh, that brings back memories. Every summer the trip from California to Grandma's farm in Arkansas. The smokehouse, well and the path to the outhouse😁 She lived there 'til she moved to town in the 60's and had indoor plumbing😅 You blessed this lady with a great transformation ❤

That’s so funny that you should find this outhouse. I am 77 years old and we had one until I was 5 years old. My dad built the first bathroom in our house. Everyone in our little town came to see it because it was such a novelty.

It's an outhouse. In Nebraska, some places didn't get indoor plumbing as late as the 1940s and early 1950s. Also in some Nebraska state parks, they still use outhouses. Great Job on the yard! Awesome!

We rented an old farmhouse in Idaho in the 1980s that still had the two seater outhouse out back (and an indoor bathroom connected to a septic system). My boys would use the outhouse when they were out playing, since if they came in to use the toilet I might ask them to stay in! And the farmers who farmed the land behind our house would use it, too, and kept it supplied with toilet paper. We lived in that house until 1992, and it was still there. I doubt anyone removed it since it was still being used regularly.

My kindergarten teacher grew up on a farm with a two seater. When the farm sold she got them to take the seat off and she took it with her and eventually made the most unique coffee table you can imagine. She put a round goldfish bowl in one side and magazines in the other. It was adorable. When she passed her sister threw it in the dump. She had always been so embarrassed by it. I asked about it because i wanted it but it was already gone.

Yes, that definitely is an "outhouse". Undoubtedly has not been in use for many years, probably since when piped sewers came to the neighbourhood. Conceivably could still be used as a temporary "convenience" if there is a blockage in the main sewers. As a youngster going on holiday with my parents in the 50's and 60's to some places "way out", we had to use these facilities (seeing as there was nothing else). Water for washing and consumption was by way of rainwater collected in large tanks.

I know you were really tired at the end of the day, that was like cutting your way through a jungle. I wonder how long did it take you to complete this amazing transformation? It seemed like you were never to get through all the overgrown trees and bush, it was like first the fence line appeared, then the outhouse. Wow! Was the Lady surprised with your find in the yard? Honestly it didn’t seem to fit the age of her house, perhaps it was left from the next door neighbors house which seemed to be much older. Either way it was a find from an earlier time. This time you really had me on the edge of my seat waiting for the reveal at the end. You really opened up her yard and let the sun shine in.

In the mountains of Colorado, there used to be outhouses at popular camping sites. We were glad to see them as it meant someone was periodically maintaining the sites and hiking trails.
We used an outhouse or privy well up into the 70’s. Looked almost exactly like the one in the video.

Outhouses were the fore runners of sanicans! I can recall seeing one when I was a girl in the 60's in the town I live now but, never used one! At first, I thought you may have found a grave site by the suspenseful theme. 😅

We convinced my great-grandfather to allow a bathroom. We enclosed the back porch and put it there in the late 60s. So glad I didn't have to use the outhouse anymore!

You did a wonderful job on this! My grandparents had a out house that we'd have to use. They finally built a bathroom on,but my grandma kept going using the out house,so my grandpa finally shoved it over the hill!😂 On the way over to see them there was a old store that had a pop machine in it that held those wonderful pops & sometimes we'd stop & get one. That's when a pop was at it's wonderful taste! Nothing like a bottled pop. My favorite was Mt.Dew! In a bottle like you found! Then they started making 16oz bottles & I'd grab one out of the fridge when I came home from school. Those were the best years of my life! We were kids& we didn't realize the world would change so much!

Yep....I agree with others. Looks like an outhouse that we used at my Grandma's home in NC. That was during the 50's and 60's. She finally got indoor plumbing in the very late 60's. You might want to do some bottle hunting in the area. A lot of old homesteads used areas near outhouses to bury their trash as well.
The thing with an out houses not all families could afford plumbing so even into the 70' outhouses were still being used. Great find!
My grandparents had an outhouse until the mid 60’s. A friend rented a house in the 80’s with an outhouse. They are still used in some rural areas. 😊❤ Sounds like someone may have been a squatter in that old outhouse. It looks like the neighbor’s property is as overgrown as hers. 😂😂
My father bought a small home on 10 acres in Southern Illinois in 1948. It came with a well and a two-hole outhouse over 55-gallon drums. No running water in the house.
My dad replaced the 55-gallon drums while I was in high school.
Cold water was piped to the kitchen sink in about 1957. Before that we kept a bucket of water drawn from the well on the side of the sink. It was my job to keep that bucket full.
I graduated high school in 1961 and immediately left home. Indoor plumbing, toilets, and a hot water heater were added a few years later.
When I visited after graduation I continued using the outhouse. It was comfortable and familiar.
It was used regularly up until about 1998. My brother demolished it when cleaning up the place after my dad could no longer care for it.
I'm sure you'll still run across many, and probably still in use, in rural Midwestern states.
