I love this band. I still kind of prefer their previous album, but this one is great still. They're one of those bands that has been "working on their next album for the past 25 years." I'm sure most of that time they weren't doing much of anything, but they've never officially "broken up" and have recently talked about how most of the album finally is now recorded. EDIT: Also, you're right that while the sections work well together, there is no standard song structure. This was common in 90s Swedish metal. I'm pretty sure Opeth didn't have a single riff/idea that they returned to on their entire first 3 or so albums.

The drummer is legit, he has since played for Dark Funeral, Gorgoroth and Dissection. The live videos with Dissection, he is clean and crisp. This band was good though, they were my favourite band back in the days. They were "working" on a new album and dropped some teaser sound clip after many years since this album (it was released in 1998), but then we never heard from them again. It is now 26 years later, I do not think there will be another album, but they were great. I highly recommend listening to their discography.
It you like this, you might also like the black metal band Kvist. The song ‘stupet’ or ‘Ars Manifesta’ for example. But their whole album, they only made just one album, is amazing.
Agreed, it's one of the albums I keep coming back to even though I listen to way less metal nowadays than I did a couple of years ago. It's a great album and honestly one of my favourite black metal albums. It also reminds me of this as well, even that much that I assumed they were a Swedish band (which they aren't and I had to remove it from my comment), but their sound reminds me more of the Swedish melodic side of black metal than the Norwegian side for some reason.
Certainly one of my favourite Swedish melodic black metal bands, although I personally do prefer their previous album over this one (but I still like this one a lot as well). Their first album has more death metal influences since they started out as a death metal band and I actually really like their blend of melodic death/black metal riffs on that one, the production isn't as clean though. Funnily enough, listening to other genres of (mostly Japanese) music nowadays also made me more aware of the rhythmic inconsistencies you heard, since a lot of the Japanese rock/metal bands tend to be very technical and precise and a lot of time very post-produced (at least compared to metal like this). I remember hearing the vocal inconsistency when I listened to this album years ago, but I have a feeling I heard way more different things now. That said, it doesn't really bother me personally. I have always liked raw sounding music that sounds like it was done in one take and even prefer some poorly recorded demo versions of songs over the recordings on first album for multiple bands. An other genre where this type of more sloppy recording is more typical is punk depending on the type of punk you listen to (not the radio friendly pop punk typically). It's an other genre where I typically enjoy the raw sounding recordings as well.
To circle back to the post I did earlier, this is a pretty good example of Swedish black metal. It's actually a band with a foot on both tendencies, as it's more aggressive and monotonous in tempo than say, Dissection, but has the same relatively clearer production and strong melodic sensibilities. Huge iron maiden influence in this branch,too
Also, this was one of the bands that made blast beats palatable to me back in the day, they don't detract from all the melodic writing . Sacramentum's first album or Dissection (in particular, the song Night's Blood) might click with you more, this is more static than both their previous album and other Swedish BM bands
Yeahhh this song is great, I listened to slaughtersun on a long drive a couple weeks ago and I was really blown away by how epic the entire album was. Also….gorgoroth-gorgoroth reaction please it’s also an amazing black metal song
I really like this album, but you mention some things I definitely agree with. Monotone drumming and lack of vocal variety are things that bother me more and more in extreme metal.
As far as Black Metal goes, this is one of the more interesting Black Metal songs I've listened to. I'm not a huge fan of Black Metal, mostly due to the production and the monotonous structure. This was cool but I probably won't go back to it
Yet another "love this band/album" comment here. Afaik darker mood in BM music has started (2004-2006) with Rebirth of Nefast and Myrkr, or S.Lockhart. Suffocating/stifling, comfortless, confused, and noticeably bassier that "normal" BM - that sort of music. Before that, even DSBM gave us a lot of "nice" things, usually. Ondskapt is also a good candidate, despite being orthodox BM. I know many would name DsO here, but I wouldn't.

Dawn always sounded like Dissection's snotnosed little brother to me. And I mean that in a positive way.. 🤗

How about a listen to Vital Remains - Dechristianize? (Satanic death metal with a touch of Spain)
Also even if the bass isn't noticeably present, great riffs are given substance with the base of bass.
