- Fun fact: I had mega deja vu whilst filming this, but then I remembered it's because I dreamt that I already filmed this video with Rowan Atkinson. So... there's that!?!
So this video is just about my accent since I've had quite a few questions on it throughout my time on youtube. (Lol because I didn't even think I actually had a strong accent!)

Blog post about this video: izzyk1998.blogspot.co.uk/2016/...
I’m from Solihull and I can categorically say that barely anybody from the entire West Midlands has a stereotypical Birmingham accent, as in like Peaky Blinders
I’m from the Black Country and it’s so different from brummie and always get confused with brummie to other outside region.
similar but not the same.
No one in peaky blinders was a real Brummie
So Lee 'ull or sol y hull.... Definitely the 2nd for me
You aren't posh you are more cov than brum
My mom’s grandfather spoke this way, I’ve been told, but maybe that’s due to having been born over a hundred years ago 🤷♀️
I'm an American who is interested in linguistics and accents throughout the world, and I always found it interesting that the UK houses so many accents. Most of my American colleagues like the Received Pronunciation accent, but I've always loved the West Midlands/Brummie/Black Country accent. I don't know how to describe it, but there is a charm to it that I've always enjoyed. :)
I absolutely love listening to different accents too, and before I filmed this video I had watched loads of different ones so I decided to make my own to add to the ones already out there. That's so true that the UK has loads of different accents, pretty much every town has it's own unique one. The Brummie accent was voted the UK's official most unattractive accent lol so I'm glad you can put up with it. Thank you very much for watching and for taking the time to write this lovely comment, that was very kind of you. I hope you enjoyed watching :)
I did enjoy watching. :) Really? The Brummie accent is the most unattractive? Huh. I know in the U.S., Boston, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia tied for the most unattractive. My native Chicago was also in the running but did not make it to the semifinals.
Katie Smith Aww thank you so much Katie. Haha it's a matter of opinion I guess and the Chicago accent is awesome!
Good for you. I was born in Birmingham but grew up in Redditch which has a different accent, or used to. Now many people who have moved from Birmingham to Redditch. By the way they are only 15 miles away from each other.
It has something to do with over a thousand years more of history. lol The Irish can often identify where other Irish people come from, county by county. There were periods in history where this could mean life or death in Ireland, allowing a stranger to identify himself by where he was from, and likewise whole communities to identify where a stranger was from, from an accent.
You may know linguistically already, when in 1066, Invaders from Northern France (Normandy) conquered, they retained the French language in the nobility and aristocracy, and "English" was for common folk. So now English words indicating high quality or expensive, like "cuisine", are derived from French. Even the words "noble" and "aristocrat" are from Old French. Also why animals and the meat they produce are often two very different words: cow (English): beef (French) pig:pork, sheep:mutton, hen:poultry. Sometimes I think its miraculous that all of England speaks a single language, let alone different accents!
I'm from West Midlands too!!!
Yay the West Midlands is the best ;)

james pulford me too

Thomas Warren I’m from wolverhampton

Great video!!!
You did such an awesome job!
I hope to see more of your videos!
Fellow West Midlands UA-camr! It's so interesting trying to see if people can figure it out as mine's quite soft other than certain words aha
I LOVE THIS ACCENT SO MUCH! I’m learning English and I want to have this accent 🥺
Davian Navarro good luck!
My cousins live in Birmingham but they sound like you and don’t have that “typical Brummie” accent. Why is it that some people have the accent but others don’t?
sooyoung same I’m from brum but I don’t have tht much of an accent but u can hear it sometimes I think it’s bc people who ur with when ur younger like teachers who ain’t from brum say it in a certain way which makes us lach on to the word
sooyoung
I think it’s to do with education. The more educated you are the more exposure you would have to other accents, and that in turn would give you a standard English accent, rather than a regional one. This is similar with Australians. The very well educated ones particularly on news programmes almost speak with an English accent. Think of Norman Coburn and then Ray Mayer. Both Australians, but with very different accents.
It depends on several factors. Education, exposure and even as simple as the neighbourhood you grow up in are all influences. I've never lived in the West Country in my life but I still somehow picked up a few West Country influences.
Its class usually
I come from Sheffield and I only have a really faint accent. I think it's partly cause my family went to uni. My mum had a strong Northumbria accent and lost it at uni and that's who I sound most like.
I also think disabilities can play into it as my dyspraxia has made my pronunciation a bit weird at times, lots of factors really!
Stumbled upon this video by mistake, but I couldn’t stop watching haha. Your accent is adorable! Great video too.
This was so fun. I love all the different accent challenges. I'm not very familiar with the different accents in the UK but it is very interesting to me! Also, *High five* cause I'm a high fiver. I cant wait to go watch one of your izzynterviews! Thats such a great idea.
+Carter Sams I love accent challenges too lol! There are so many different uk accents literally every town has a different one so I thought why not share mine lol! Aww thanks so much for that virtual high five gorgeous xxx
hi x
I'm also from the west midlands (coventry) and I do feel like we almost don't have an accent, like a stranger couldn't hear me and point to a map if that makes sense?
I'm from Coventry and I've lived abroad for years, it's a very strong accent when you hear it, and you haven't heard it for a while, and you can pinpoint any Midland city.
i can't believe i haven't seen this yet! i learned so much about your accent!!! lol the "water" pronunciation. lol i've never tp'd anybody's house before but one time me & my friends saran wrapped somebody's car...😂😂😂
Haha thanks for watching Katie ;) Lol that's so funny xxx
You sound quite like Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald) from EastEnders and she comes from Northampton so it sounds like quite a general West Midlands accent, apart from Birmingham of course.
I live in Coventry which is like 50mins away
Gotta love Coventry, my sister goes to school there and that's where my Dad's from. Thanks for watching :)
Izzy K You like Coventry?! I unfortunately live very close to it
Izzy K you pretty much have a Cov/Birmingham accent
same, foleshill REPRESENT
not alot to represent its pretty rubbish
Macy Morrissey my brothers were born there
You have such a pretty accent Izzy! I wish that I had a fun accent!
+Emily Charlotte Aww thanks so much Emily, let's swap accents then love yours xxx

This is one of my most favorite tags on youtube because I just love hearing how other people pronounce different words :D It's actually really great that you posted this because for some reason I've always thought you were from Australia or New Zealand. You don't have the accent but Idk why I just assumed that. But now that that's clear, the British accent makes more sense haha.
+Crystal Valenzuela Literally same I love listening to different accents. Lol that's so funny I love those accents so that's really a compliment xxx
hi x
You're so pretty
You are always so fun to watch !! xx
+KezziesCorner Aww you are you gorgeous xxx
Izzy K as are you xxx
American here and did a BBC test to see what accent is most similar to mine, being midwest US. It came up Midlands. By the way, your accent is beautiful and you are charming. I do sound different, of course, but many specific words are spoken similarly to me.
The area I'm from is said to have the least accent of any American area, which is between Indianapolis and Columbus Ohio.
Eyelashes on point! I love your accent, no one thinks they have one but everyone does, lol.
+BlurrBeauty ♚ Aww thanks gorgeous and haha that's so true xxx
I got interested in the West Midlands when I found a 1960s TV in the loft a while ago. It was put up there by someone who lived there before me and it has a sticker on the back that says Made In West Midlands. I have no idea weather it works or not I doubt it as it's been up there for years and we have pipes up there so my Mum won't let me go up there but when she was out one day I sneaked up there and found it up there. It probably doesn't work. Again it was made in the West Midlands. Anyway I've never noticed a West Midlands accent until now.
I can totally recognise your accent from specific words you say like the way you pronounce “call” , “called” , “summer” and “honestly”
This was super informative for us "foreigners" hahaha. I know what you mean though, in the states we always say "southern accent" when in the south they don't think they have an accent LOL. Loved this, as usual you made me laugh! XO -Kim
+Kim Petersen P.S. Us Americans call throwing toilet paper on a house, "teepeeing" T.P.'ing as in toilet papering your house hahaha. Most of us do it as teenagers, it's kind of just something kids do. LOL.
thank you izzy for the video!! God bless you!! Hussam from tunisia
I love how chatty and real you are! You're really fun to watch :) I'm rubbish with accents so I never would have placed you there haha! :) xx
+Nevena Krstic That honestly means so much thank you hun :) Haha so am I don't worry and now you know xxx
Something I find notable about your accent is the way the "L" at the end of certain words becomes a "W" sound. (Talk --> Tawk, Oil --> Oiw, Stalked --> Stawked, Called --> Cawed). It seems like that pops out more often some times than others, though. I think your accent is lovely, by the way! I have a strong accent, myself, that's a bit of a hybrid between Southern and Texan.
This is funny 😬 I loved it !
+Angela Marie Thanks so much for watching xxx
I LOVE your accent so much!!💗 when I'm older I would love to travel to the UK!

Just came across this today, your accent is precious! Vid made me smile so much, made me want to reply. I live outside in United States near Birmingham Alabama. And you mentioned both Birmingham and Alabama in vid. Granted your Birmingham is long way from ours.
Toilet Paper Rolling, aka called TPing, Rolling, or yard rolling. This is common here in U.S. around April Fools Day and during October specifically the week of Halloween, teenagers (teens) buy about 50 rolls of inexpensive toilet paper and "go rolling"...The expression indicates rolling a house but most just roll the trees. When rolling, you take a roll and unroll a few sheets then throw it high into a tree, in such a way that it unrolls in midair, thus leaving streams of paper hanging. You can roll other things like the lamppost, or newspaper box. Steer clear of mailboxes unless you want federal offense on your record. Rolling was common when I was a teen (20+ years ago), except now teens have added plastic forks to the mix, called “forking”. The forks are stuck into ground all over the front lawn with the prongs poking up. In my experience, people don't get mad if they get rolled as this is typically a prank played between friends, not as an act of revenge. Teens will roll friends, Teachers, Coach or even trees at their School. Part of the prank is not telling them who actually did it. It’s like a challenge to determine which friend(s) did the rolling or to actually catch them in the act. You must be very quiet, and stealthy. Most teens go rolling during the middle of the night while others sleep. Of course if you roll your friends house, you spend the rest of the week anxiously waiting to see if your house is next. We use to hide outside for hours to catch any friends trying to roll our house. Now that is funny because you hear them get closer and you can hear them trying to whisper to each other. Then we would scare the mess out of them by charging them from bushes while screaming! That’ll teach them, hahaha.

In the US, gym shoes are called Sneakers.
I live in the South, so we address a group with “Hey Y’all”!!

At supermarket we call wheeled contraption a buggy.
A Sunshower is when rains while sun is shining.

accents vary so much, im from coventry which is close but we dont even say solihull the same way
i say s-oh-lihull as in oh but you say s-o-lihull as in sock
The first.
Someone once told me that a Southern accent is basically a Midlands British accent slowed down and I just can’t make my fake British accent slower to test this. What does the comment section think?
My name is Lulu
I am 18 year old originally from Leeds Yorkshire and when i was about 8 years old i moved to Stockport England
And even after living in Northwest England for 10 years i always get asked if i am from The Midlands

Yep I've TP'd a house before. Actually a tree in front of the house. Then someone dumped mustard on my mom's car. It was all part of the rivalry between athletic teams at my school.
I'm a couple hours away in the East Midlands! West vs East xD The glottal stop is common, don't hide your accent - Nice video!
The old Roman road Watling Street (today's A5) marked the border between English Mercia (to the SW) and the Danelaw (to the NE) -- and it still pretty much divides the accents of, say, Coventry (in the West Midlands) from those of, say, Leicester (in the East Midlands), even though the two cities are not much more than 20 miles apart.
I live in Coventry. Just thought that was relevant seeing as its very close

Throwing toilet paper on a house. The fact that you said vandalism is hilarious lmao
Im Canadian and love your accent. I know what you mean when you say “ I don’t think I have an accent’I just wanted to add that when you say “talk “, to me it almost sounds like ‘toke’ , long o vowel. We say it like more like ‘toc’ as in tic toc of the clock. Thanks for posting!

I'm confused about my own accent.
I was raised in Rugeley, lived there for 20 years before moving to Stafford for the next 6.
Most people think my accent is from Birmingham, but I don't hear it lol
i speak English very well but honesty lot of the video i couldn't understood .. i really liked the rhythm of your amazing accent .. keep going sweet
This is so funny just like all of your videos! Your rambling are the funniest thing so don't apologize. When people heard my voice they were like "your accent is so cute". I remember being really little and argueing with my dad that I don't have an accent and everybody else does. In New Zealand, those Daddy long legs things are called Crane Flies and when it rains when the sun is shining, it's a sun shower. I don't think you are extremely brummie but I don't think you sound like the queen.
+Smiley Central Haha I'm so glad you can put up with my rambling Catherine. I've never heard of them being called crane flies before so thanks for letting me know :) xxx
I live in Birmingham UK just on the border with Solihull and I call them flying spiders 😂😂. Nobody else does I don't think but them seem to know what I'm going on about 😅🤔👍
Isnt Solihul a borough of birmingham rather than a town? Im not one to comment as i have a very strong black country accent but you dont sound like a brummie to me you got a very neutral accent cant really tag it to place! Great video though keep it up 👍
I'm From West Midlands (Coventry)
I am from Venezuela and when I was learning English, one of my teachers lived in Birmingham.(he ain't Brummie though) He was from Cape Verde and at first I taught he was pronouncing English wrongly. Afterwards I realised the existence of the Brummie accent by listening the Barclays premier League on BBC world service on Saturdays and there where a lot of reporters and comentators from the west midlands. Then I was wrongly associating the Brummie accent with Aussie accent until I watched the Peaky Blinders. (Of course plenty of the actors ain't Brummie but, I perceived the difference between Brummie, Yam Yam and Aussie. Far different. And if people in the UK doesn't like the brummie accent, well, I "luv" for 3 reasons (short A, intonation and the rothic R " short A and rothic R because of Spanish language and intonation because sounds nice. RP is comercial English (to be sold English for us English learners) but the brummie accent I really love it.
Throwing toilet paper at a house is really common in America. So is throwing raw eggs. We call it it TP'ing a house. I have never done it but I have seen it before. Really common after Halloween.
The bugs that roll up when you touch them are rolly pollies.
The thing on wheels you use in a super market is called a shopping cart in the US.

of course. happy to help!

In America, throwing toilet paper on houses is sort of a common practice for high school students during football season (American football season). I believe it's supposed to be done to the people at rival schools but nowadays we do it to our friends and such as well. Oh and its called "rolling" since toilet paper comes in rolls. The bug that rolls into a ball is a roley poley (I bet I butchered the correct spelling of the name but oh well).
+Mysterious Biscuit Haha cheers for letting me know, it's sounds so different to what we do in the UK lol xxx
Such a fun tag!!!! Trollley!!!!!!!!! :)
