I remember reading "The Secret Garden" to my kids. I dreaded reading Martha's character because she's from Yorkshire and it was so hard for me to read out loud trying to do the accent 😄
I finished reading secret garden for the 2nd time! Curiosity got the better of me, and i just had to know how Yorkshire accent sounded
I came here for the same book ✨
I had the same problem 😂
There's some challenging bits in Wuthering Heights too. Lovely people, lovely county. God's own.

This is fascinating. My two neighbours are from northern Yorkshire and Wales, and it's very hard to understand them. English was hard enough for me to learn and listening to them makes it even harder. I really like the accent though.
I'm Canadian but my dad's Leeds born an raised. Never realized how much of a Yorkshire-man he is! Chuffed and faffing have been commonplace since I was a baby.
I've only learnt that faffing isn't used all over the English speaking world.

LOVE these British Accents challenges! I'm a Yank and I used to get such a kick out of the old Yorkshire farmers on the original "All Creatures Great and Small". They were a bit hard to understand sometimes. I especially found amusing the way they frequently dropped the article "the", as in "Aye, go fetch veterinary".
"The" is not completely dropped, it is replaced with a glottal stop.
Exceptthey'd say, "Vetnry."
Don't say about yourself you're a Yank. It's awful.
I'm from West Virginia, and growing up, my dad and his family all used to say "how do" as a greeting. I've never heard anyone else say it like that, although everyone tends to know what I mean when I say it.
Omg this is so perfect! My husband is from Yorkshire & trying to explain a Yorkshire dialect to Americans is so confusing for them! Haha I was confused for awhile even after I moved to Sheffield & I'm ryte good at the accents. LOL!! Love it! 👏

Yeah, I totally clicked on this Video because I'm so interested in the Yorkshire accent, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the thumbnail...
A few years ago I decided to move to UK instead of US because I understood UK English better compared to US. I thought everyone was speaking "BBC English"... and gosh I'm bad in thinking..
US English is less diverse and is everywhere. I don't know why you have thought that everyone speaks like in the BBC, but it's funny.
This accent diversity is terrible to many people. US/CAN English is really more understandable.

Old English and Old Frisian are sister languages, so a lot of Dutch stuff will be similar but with different meanings along with the Frisian stuff. Here is some Frisian evolution of words that the meanings have slightly changed compared to English but you can see how they where once the same. 'Dat binne Fenna's boeken' 'Those are Fenna's books' the words 'that's' or 'those' where im from in Yorkshire is pronounced 'Dats' its like the 'th' at the beginning of the word is changed to a 'D'. The 'Binne' evolved into our word 'Been' which then evolved into 'Are' and we dont actually say 'Been' where im from we still say 'Binne' as in 'Ive just binne to shop' but the true pronunciation in Yorkshire accent would be 'Av juss binne teh shop' you see the 'to' is changed to 'teh' its like you begin to say the word 'to' but you only get to the T before the rest of the word is totally abandoned and we move onto pronouncing the next word...
nice acent....thank you for share

I love provincial accents and want them to survive...but would be dumbfounded and desperately trying to comprehend what I'm hearing if I ever encountered certain ones. I remember going on a tour in New York City several years ago and running into three young Scotsmen. I'd never met Scottish people before and thought it was cool to be able to chat with them, but it was embarrassingly difficult to make out what they were saying, though they seemed to understand my American English (most of my life on the west coast) just fine. I distinctly remember one of them (and he was the chattiest one, I think) saying to me, "Beleeb me man, I'm TROYING," before having yet again to repeat something he'd just said so I could try to understand. I felt so bad for them at times and also felt like a moron, haha. :(
I'm from huddersfield in Yorkshire my hole family is and her accent is spot on😁

English is a Germanic language .
Southern English accents are more influnced by French and Latin . Variety is the spice of life and what makes a country x
It does to me. I live in the north.
The English are a mix of Celtic and Germanic people, not stickily "German"
The505Guys Via French which has a lot of Latin influence . There was a huge influx of French Hugenouts from France and Belgium especially in the South East sure they influnced the language . Not to mention how closely the two regions traded .
Angles and Saxons spoke simalir languages but not quiet the same .
Places like Hull traded with the Scandinavian and Northern European countries as well as parts of Germany .
Doors tend to be made of wood.
When doors are open there is a hole.
So “put wood in hole” is pretty self explanatory
Brilliant!
The Turkish chick is hot
very attractive & unique look to the lovely Miss Yasmin from Turkey, she did a very good job on memorizing & pronouncing all that gibberish.
You're happy to take her and the fifty million others that are in Europe if you'd like, it'd maybe give all the other "gibberish" accents on the continent a break.
That's what older accents sound like .
I'd still know she wasn't from Yorkshire even though she was using some of the phrases, as she hasn't got the Yorkshire twang in her nose. I didn't know some of those. I was born in West Yorkshire. Lived in Australia for just over 50yrs, and still got my accent, which I never want to lose, as I'm proud of it! My three grown-up children, all born in SA all have Aussie accents.
To be fair, she’s not even English. I’m sure if you went to Ankara and learned some Turkish phrases, people would still know that you were not Turkish.
sounds beautiful :D
My mother tongue is Portuguese. I've learned American English. In London I was mistreated because of my English pronunciation. I am sure that the person who did it could not speak any other language. Otherwise, that person would know we speak the way we were taught. It is not choice.
Sounds like she must’ve been slightly familiar with it already 😊
could you provide us with some vowel shifting chart in IPA and the features of the accents instead of tell us certain statements cause it's hard to know all words in all accents ? it will help a lot .
It would be interestin’ to see the results of a Survey to see if Parents are passin’ on local speak to their youngsters! It’s not so widely spoken so now!

This is a bit exaggerated to how we actually talk. People only use those phrases every now n then, not in every single sentence.
I kind of figured that. I'm from the midwest of the United States and we dont really have an accent. So even when we use slang and expressions it doesnt get that crazy.
Yes, because it comes from the Anglian dialects of Old English (6th-11th century).
