Red tape recorder has a hidden stat of mental damage to the engineer who built it
Psychological Damage doesn't show up on the leaderboards, that ain't worth nothing.
Ok, maybe it's worth a chuckle
I get brain damage when my buildings get RTR cause i have to upgrade again
Emotional damage!
This is why I always use red tape recorders. There is nothing like 17 seconds of spawn listening to you equipment blaring at you that it’s getting zapped.
The normal sapper is meant for destruction. The red tape recorder is meant for wasting time. That’s why it’s actually a perfect counter to mini sentries since it reduces the spam potentional
They should make that Engi Buildings work slower by ~50% for 3 seconds after taking the Red Tape Recorder off:
Sentries shoot slower and turn slower,
Teleporters are slower and Dispensers heal and dispense slower too.
Orit could make that buildings have 80% slower animation when upgrading for 5 seconds after RTR is destroyed.
Note that these would be buffs not remake to the Red Tape Recorder, these would be additional buffs to make RTR more viable.
Unless your fighting uncle Dane and he kills your with 2 shotgun meatshots
It also works against advancing engys. A L3 sentry/dispenser moved and sapped while building? Now it's L1.
Its not great, but it does have unique niche moments
Oh no my mini was sapped, guess I'll just place another in 2 seconds
@@siratthebox with the normal sapper, yes
That spin on top of the medic was downright bizarre
but with yucky motion blur.
I do not play with motion blur, just a quirk of the way I render
@@Toopys Do you record at a higher framerate and then crush it down to 60fps?
No, I record at 60fps. The way I render the video ready for uploads seemingly has issues around very sudden movements
@@Toopys That sounds so strange. I'm on mobile right now, so I can't inspect frame-by-frame, but I don't see how that could be possible. Frames are each supposed to be distinct sets of data, so how could they be unintentionally "blended together" to form a blur effect? The only ways I can think of are either interlacing or an issue with insufficient encoding bandwidth.

The red tape recorder's one upside is that noob spies who would sap and die without taking out the sentry will instead get a level or two taken off the sentry. This can ultimately cause the nest to go down because level 1 sentries are super weak.
The only small issue with that is the new players who decide to only do that and don't bother learning how to effectively play spy and take down some nests, but atleast its more useful than them just running into the battlefield and dieing i suppose lol
Tbf it's actually an effective support strategy if you know you're going to die.
I run into engie infested camps with the red tape recorder and immediatel that softens every sentry I can reach for.
Works disgustingly well against Jag Engies as well. That repair penalty alongside a weakened level 2 makes it easy to clear nests
Hey, I'm not a noob!
Ah, who am I kidding, yes I am.
Dude, red tape kills battle engie. Anyone who uses gunsliinger and FJ will be unable to demolish their minis when sapped. Since it takes longer to sap than a sapper, they have to wait so much longer to get the revenge crits.
@@dvduwu just use the Widowmaker, or realize your sentry has been sapped, it tells you, and position yourself out of combat.
I was confused about where the DH soldier went, then on the third watch I realised he blew himself up, which makes this clip even better
"My people need me"
Even without finding a use for the RTR this clip was great
don't forget the hidden stat on the Red-Tape Recorder: it causes emotional damage on engies if used on their level 3 sentries
and if the engie is playing on "Asian Difficulty" as we all well know, any amount of Emotional Damage is instantly lethal
Well, they deserve it for being the most annoying class in the game.
Its better whenever the building is being actively looked after, since it'll cost the engi 200 metal to restore the building rather than a single wrench hit of hp
Unless they use the eureka effect since it downs the upgrade cost to 100 each level
@@69SlayerGaming69 Yeah but you’re forcing the engineer to use the eureka effect
@@PassTheSnails lol
@@69SlayerGaming69 oh damn didn't know that

@@TravaZZZik well yeah it's a teleporter based wrench
You be surprised how handy it can be against teleporters
That’s actually a really, really good idea. The only practical and consistent upside the Red Tape Recorder has over stock is that it wastes more of the engineer’s time if it gets to do part of its job before being destroyed. Considering how teleporters are most often placed a little ways back, it means it would probably get off two levels by the time he reaches it, AND the process of him upgrading it back to full power would leave his other buildings unguarded.
I’ll definitely have to try this out. You’re one smart cookie.
@@CaptainWobbs although wouldn't i better if its just forced to build another one when its destroyed?
say with the stock it'll waste even more time to deploy buildings rather than upgrading them again, and costs more metal. The only thing i believe its good is when an engie is dead and a building is being sapped by the red tape, would see them suffer and get destroyed right as they respawn. It could also be a good distraction for enemies to think a spy is still nearby since the sap is still visible thinking its recently sapped
but yes i realize with the red tape it'll disable it from functioning while the sap is destroyed if the building was mid way through reversing, i just realize that so yea its definitely good tho
Yeah the difference in practicality between level 2 and level 3 is most noticeable in teleporters. Level 2 sentries and dispenser continue to perform their role pretty well, but the recharge time of 5 seconds vs 3 seconds creates a crippling delay between reinforcement.
If you're looking to waste the engineers time then use it on his sentry and dispenser, disp, because it resets the metal stored inside it and the sentry will leave him nearly defenseless. Teleporter gets reset to generally level 1 if it's been zapped of either kind so not much use there.
Feel like some people were at the tele waiting to teleport when the Sapper got removed, But since the exit was half-built they coudln't teleport when the sapper broke to come kill ya, Nice plays bro.
Sorry, but when a teleporter is for example, going back a level or starting the de-construction process, if the sapper is destroyed both dispensers and teleporters will work immediately, No matter at what stage it was left on, you can check Afterbreakfast's spy bugs for that
the RTR pairs weirdly well with the stock revolver specifically for the purposes of total teleporter downtime
Regular sapper for when you want to kill stuff.
Red tape for when you want to torture the engineer.

Wow one of the rare times where a spy clip feels actually skillful and not just someone got a kill streak on a team full of the most unaware easy mode bots in existence.
Yeah but ain't it skillful to sneak on enemy players without getting seen ? cuz its pretty much the purpose of playing spy.
@@jean-philippegaudette5402I think he means that the enemy team wasn't blind but he managed to catch them anyways
@@jean-philippegaudette5402 Yes, but that doesn’t have much to do with the original comment, since in the first place they never said anything like sneaking not being skillful. It’s just that sneaking on a skilled player is more skillful than sneaking on an unskilled/inattentive player.
@@Kipwichthe whole things a bit iffy because wouldn't this count as gunspy gameplay? Aside from the two sick backstabs, he was in open combat which makes me think of gunspy (esp since I can't trickstab for shit)
I think the whole purpose of Red Tape in Valves drawing board was to weaken and slowdown the nest instead of destroying it. The fact that Red Tape deletes Dispensers whole metal if it manages to go 1 level down is in many cases enough for Engie to not able to repair the damage from the spam.
In most cases I think Red Tape is best for "suicide" attempts where if you sap all 3 buildings, usually the engie will first try to rescue his sentry but by then the dispenser and especially teleporter will go down 1 or even 2 levels.

Fun fact: the Red Tape recorder resets building progress, completely empties dispenser metal reserves and is capable of instantly destroying buildings that have just been redeployed. It’s a lot better than it’s given credit for.
I approve 👌
The red tapr recorder is better than stock not because it is actually better but because it is annoying
I heavily agree. im shitty at spy so my purpose is not to kill the engie nest, but to be a nuisance till he switches classes. RTR helps me do that very well
same reason i use the natascha. you can lose a video game, but the true victory is to deal damage to enemy player's stress levels
@@SockMasterFloe lol
I main RTR spy because I'm more concerned with pissing people off than being useful :D
Red-Tape Recorder was actually really infuriating in HL because delevelling a dispenser would wipe out all its stored up metal. That doesn't sound that bad but when you're holding in a tactical location that doesn't have a good metal pack, a subsequent pressure from the enemy team would likely push you out as you can't withstand the damage.
The red tape recorder is used to soften up an ordinarily inassaultable engineer stack (typically on lasts), you're supposed to just place it and run on the first attack.
I'm honestly in disbelief that he landed those three consecutive shots with the Ambassador. I'm lucky if the first shot goes straight.

Wow so it basically gives more time to deal with the medic since the tele has to reconstruct itself......neat :P
That ambassador assassination was great. Awesome use of the weapon.
Funily enough actually, if a building is in the deconstructing phase and the Red Tape is removed, Teleporters and Dispensers start working again immediately, instead of having to build again like Sentries, people may have just thought that it wasn't built yet, or the Teleperter was still trying to recharge.
"Excuse me while I multitask..."
Red Tape Recorder is most suited for the One Situation where you are good enough at spy to get to a sentry, but the enemy team is so strong you need your teammates to finish the job.
Man after a long time of not playing tf2 I totally forgot how wild the chat is in public servers
"hey what was your teleporter level again?"
"level 3, why?"
"its level 1.. And is being sapped"
"oh crap"
Red Tape Recorder: Wastes Time, Metal and destroys the infrastructure of sentrie nests
It’s also a good counter to ninjaneers since it means they can’t teleport to their exit tele because it technically isn’t 100% built
Yeah, I remember trying and trying to come up with a good reason to use the red tape. Ultimately I just use it on big pub servers, those 16v16s where the enemy team has 4 day 1 engineers all building too close to each other. I feel like they were more aggressive in wanting to kill the red tapes more than a regular sapper, as if the fear of having their buildings lose a level was worse than losing the whole building, so it was just a quality of life issue. They'd completely turn their backs to you to knock those things off XD
Red Tape is amazing when working with a team, since if the sapper is expected to break anyway at least now it is a lvl 2 building. You can sap the stuff, then move onto to do something else while your team does the rest with ease.
That jumping 180 backstab from above is the reason people despise spy mains.
breaking news
local solrock gamer finds a use for trash
I see, so basically by prolonging the amount of time you sapped his teleporter he couldn't rebuild a new one even if he wanted. Effectively taking the teleporter out of the fight for a lot longer. And likewise the upside to using it on a sentry or a dispenser is the same. Taking it out of commission for a lot longer effectively barring the engineer from destroying it while hes forced to wait or run all the way there and remove the sapper which would take longer anyways.
That and even when it was destroyed because it reversed the building progress the engi or others couldn't teleport to kill the spy. Letting him kill the medic without being interrupted.
Holy hell, that felt like a movie scene
This video demonstrates a major frustration for Medics. Because you’re an important and easy target and the Medigun allows you to look around freely, you’re usually the first or only person to notice threats, and it’s difficult to inform teammates without a mic 🤪

This spy has is God damn priorities set
your game is so smooth goddamn
Sapper idea - Hive mind - deals more damage and has more health the more things are being sapped, 2 hits and below normal damage sapping a single building, regular sapper stats against 2 buildings, 4 hits and 1.5x damage against 3, and 5 hits 2x damage against 4…. If multiple buildings are sapped, and one does before the others, the sapper will continue to run its course with whatever level is had before, when all buildings were up.
That's a fairly interesting chat going on there
Honestly the gameplay is just good the entire clip

One thing I've noticed from this clip is that the Red Tape forces the building to re-upgrade before it can be used thus keeping the engineer from standing on it and joining the fight before you can re-sap

A rare moment where a spy uses the red tape recorder
Something a lot of people don't know about the Red-Tape Recorder:
It removes all the metal an Engineer has built up inside a dispenser. As soon as the thing is applied, all metal in the dispenser is deleted. Even if the engie unsaps it before it loses a level, the dispenser being empty will severely hamper his ability to repair/rebuild.
The RTR sapper's instant metal-dump only happens to level 1 Dispensers. Level 2 and 3 Dispensers have to be deleveled before they lose their stockpile. Still, the deleveling is so aggressive that those Dispensers usually lose their metal anyway. Being put on a lower priority than the Sentry, that's about guaranteed to happen.
The way they juggled applying the RTR on the tele and fighting the medic.
Was just asking for an uber saw crrit, lol.
Oldschool RuneScape Music 🎶🎶🎶
I enjoy the music you use
In my opinion red tape recorder is an absolute upgrade in coordinated pushes, down grade building in combo of a uber push is almost impossible for engy to do anything. It's more of a support sapper than most realise because it reduce the total amount of hp a building has, making it metal scrap for your assisting soldier or demoman
The speed at which the RTR can de-level a structure is insane. It may not destroy it, but it'll make the engie pull his hair out.
the thing about the redtape is that even if the teleporter goes below level one you can still go through it as soon as it's unsapped, it's a super weird bug
There was a time when it was useful for me. One match my team needed to push the cart but a level 2 sentry was defending the cart, the whole red team was defending the point and the engineer got the sapper off immediately, but I sapped it with a red tape recorder and it went to level 1 making my team push forward.
In game chat gave me a good chuckle

MAN set out on a quest to find use for the RTR and found a use he did.
The one big use-case of red tape recorder is when the engineer or pyros are constantly on their buildings and you get unsnapped quickly, you'd rather have a level 2 sentry than a slightly damaged level 3 sentry
If it's really good at two things, it's screwing over mini sentries and teleporters
NICE work, Toopy!
I was on an all talk 2fort server and I sapped a dispenser with the Red Tape Recorder causing confused screaming from the Engie. It was glorious.
the type of spy that can backstab in all 360°
As the Red tape Recorder would say; “Let’s make some noise”
Huh. Never thought to use the RTR to cuck a teleporter. . . That's actually a pretty damn hilarious use to both annoy and waste the time of an Engineer who will probably be too busy trying to bring his teleporter back up to care for his nest or try to move it up. Especially when his team is just standing in front of his tele and looking at him with judgmental eyes.

RDR: Place sapper, get killed, engie knocks sapper off, but now has to deal with de-levelled building

My favorite part was the medic utterly confused as to what was shooting them at the start.
I can smell the sweat and grease. Very cool
I was wondering where that direct hit soldier went. Then I saw the killfeed lol.
yeah I love using the red tape recorder, for most scenarios its crap, but its really nice because you can cause the engi to waste metal, and if they decide to not save it, it takes a long time before they can place another dispenser/tele/sentry as it takes so long to destroy stuff. Very underrated item honestly.
It's so much fun when you are using the Red Tape Recorder & you're near an entrance teleporter & there is no one around & the engineer can't come back to the entrance in time so you sap it & they remove the sapper & the cycle repeats until the teleporter is no more. Good times.
this man napas spin'd the medic before killing him, absolute legend
its always better in my heart
The real thing about the red tape recorder is that it's much better in instances where downtime matter more than damage. Such as allowing for some classes to effectively deal with them in cooperation with the spy. A sapper has a short fixed duration of downtime and it at least always leaves the building at its current level, the RTR can have several seconds of downtime and can sometimes downgrade an entire level or 2, allowing for a much easier push than if a building was just sapped and fully repaired in 1 wrench swing. Of course, the low damage is horrendous for non-communicating spies who wanna do their thing and continue on their day...
