Modified Audi S4 B5 Review! Twin Turbo Sleeper Sedan!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 січ 2021
- The Audi S4 B5 is a notoriously unreliable but fun driving experience. With its twin turbo V6 and all wheel drive it carves the mountain roads with no problem. However with how unreliable these cars were..why did the owners keep fixing them rather than sell them? The answer to that question is what we are discussing today! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday,Thursday, and Sundays!

What’s your favorite Audi ever?!
I use to have an evo x. I had a buddy who had a b5 S4, and I honestly fell in love! Definitely a favorite of mine. Especially how fair priced they are due to their age
This car! Finally been waiting for this review
Audi 200 or S4 B4
B5 s4 Avant
I wanted one of these but now that I heard that they are so unreliable, I am going to pass on this one...
"Think of an unreliable tuner car"
Me, giving my boost leaked 335i the dirtiest look:
Adam LZ entered the chat.
Surprised Subaru wasn’t mentioned lol
@@ediblekookie Subaru owners are too busy replacing their head gasket to comment
However the 335i can break 500whp without grenading the motor and the S4 would go boom N54 is so much better than the 2.7t.
almost all n54 issues are electrical though, the engine itself is rock solid and can handle over 700hp on stock internals
Both turbos are the same size - both are K03's stock, not compound turbos, its a true twin turbo setup one K03 on each bank in the back of the engine.
exactly, that's why it is a biturbo not a twinturbo😃
K03s ;)
True.
@@Filip_Jasionowski Twin turbo and biturbo are the same thing.
@@henrym5889 I mean, Audi calls it biturbo and they are indentical in size and work at the same time. But for example isn't a 13b rotary a twinturbo? one is smaller and second is bigger, then the magic of vacum hoses and soleniods makes them switch. But also MK4 supra is called twin turbo and has identical twins?(not 100% sure) Modern AMG's have biturbo's same size, as do RS audis same size biturbo. I think it's up to the company to call it how they want and thats it
I’ve literally been waiting for a B5 S4 review for years. 😂

can u review one???
You guys should do a review on this car too!
These were the shit back in 03 when I was a senior in high school and a guy had one that was really quick for that time at the local meets.
Finally! In the middle of 2.7t swapping my rwd b5 a4
I feel like thats gonna blow out our tiny rear diff with the extra torque all going into 1 place lol. You just taking out the front axels?
oh no lol
God bless
I have a 2.7 swapped b7 a4, his should be fine
Just buy a b5 s4
The b5 is the best S4 generation imo, just so damn beautiful, if I could just find a clean A4 I’d be happy
I had a 1997 A4, 2.8, 5 speed, Quattro. It was extremely reliable. Never should have sold it.
@@iDrive4fun93 17-year-old here still running around in a 2.8 5mt. Planning to run this motor into the ground and 4.2 swap. Best first car for an enthusiast ever
my dad has a 1995 a4 b5 1.6 and honestly it's not fast but it is very reliable for my dad at least. he has it since 2008
I got bought a really clean b5 a4 1.8t Quattro, it’s so rare to find a clean a4 around my area

@@Alwzdwn44130 A very respectable, achievable, and achievable horsepower number. Whats so funny?
I’ve owned my b5 s4 for 3 years with the last 6 months being around 450 whp on tte550’s. One of the most reliable cars i have owned and witnessed. I try to stretch its legs daily too. These cars feel very solid and newish even being 20 years old 👍
It's reliable when kept stock! I know because I own two b5 s4's. One is bone stock with 355k miles on original turbos, original clutch, original everything. The other is stage 3+ K04's with methanol pushing 437whp @ 29PSI and is reliable for the most part. Aftermarket parts are the ones that tend to break first with my experience on this car. BTW, Devin - the LCD isn't out on that cluster, you just need to press the square button on the wiper arm to toggle the screen on/off.
My friend had a a6 with the same motor and damn could that thing fly but he gave up on it after busting axles all the time and turbo problems.
@@philbarry1984 also the lcd is like 14 bucks on ebay lol! my tuner j price has a tial 770 setup in his s4 with rods he also has a bone stock b5 a4 with a gt28 eliminator kit pushing 320awhp to the tires on un opened 1.8t all stock
In high school way back in the mid 2000’s this was one of my dream cars. This and the Jetta gli
Same, thats why I bought one in my 30s lol. Couldnt afford one when i was 18.
those gli came with the nicest wheels ever.
Best S4 generation hands down!!!
I remember just finishing college and one of my best friends got one of these brand new. Black on black 6 speed. He tuned it and it was a monster. He had a Remus exhaust, short shift kit and a bunch of other things. He also took out the ugly wood trim and replaced it with the real Audi aluminum trim with someone who wanted the wood. He actually replaced it with a new terminator and then a new z4m coupe he bought from me when I sold BMWs. The s4 was his favorite car until he got the z4m coupe. These S4s always bring back great memories.
I feel personally attacked. This is still one of my favorite cars I've owned and will be building a RS4 Limo style S4 in the future.
Did you build your wide body sedan/rs4 clone
definitely gives it its charm, got that from my English teacher, he has an 01 Camry and this exact same car and he drives this one to school, he told me if it didn't break, what's the difference between it and the Camry? and so I took that to heart every time my car breaks down lol
EDIT: he's the reason I'm here lol
LOL, I daily a white Camry and my S4 is on the lift. Hahaha!
@@simon_raya hahaha
Someone explain this to me, I don't know if I'm just fockin dumb or something.
I still have my 2001.5 Silver B5 S4 that I bought brand new from Beverly Hills Audi Southern California. It's amazing how many people left comments on this car that's over 20 years old. I love that thing and now my 12 year old daughter and 17 year old son are drooling over it. Looking for fellow Audi nuts near me with a lift, lol.
I rarely ever post a comment about anything. But my B5S4 will NEVER leave my hands. And driving one in the snow is THE experience to have. I have never smiled so much in my life save the day I was wed.
My god I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this vid pop up on my recommended. I love my B5 S4!
My parents had a 2.8 when I was younger. Lots of memories in the B5. Loved this review.
I was driving my b8.5 S4 today and a B5 went by me the other way and I turned around just to get a better look. I love the B5 that much. Such a good looking car.
I do the same thing in my b7 s4 avant👌
Man that thing sounds rad. One of my friends in college had one of these and it was a beast, really fun to tear it up in. Thanks for what you do David!
I've owned one for 4 years - bought pretty much bone stock and went to K04s in my garage.
IMO - best setup by far is K04s with a stock bottom / top end. I've run my build for around 20k miles and haven't had much issues ... although, early on I did just about every gasket, seal, timing belt change, auxiliary water pump, suspension component, wheels, cooling system overhaul + mods ...
The moment you accept it's a shitbox / it'll never be perfect is a good day ... I enjoy the hell out of my car even with all of it's creaks & groans.
I had K24s. I liked em but they spool pretty late. always wondered what K04s felt like.
@@KB-ny2lc K24s do great on the top end but, K04 will always be the best street setup .. especially with ethanol.
Every built S4 is only good for highway pulls .. and that’s a fact .
@@tyler141 yup definitely bro. I also had a Ko3 s4 and it’s crazy to say but my Ko3 was honestly more fun under 60. Top end on my K24 car was crazy but all the power was way up top and only fun when you stretch it’s legs. Definitely.
B5 S4 has got that "look to it. just looks good, sounds great.
This is a review that you DONT see very often and im glad you have done it sir. Cant click fast enough.
Watched this in my b5 a4 while getting food was the best feeling 😂 i have been waiting for a b5 s4 or a4 review ever since i started watching his videos
The squeaky window rolling down hit home for me. My front windows on the S4 do the same thing!
Silicone spray on weatherstrip
same on my dad's 95 a4
Growing up my neighbor’s son had one of these. He was about ten years older than me so I was like 8 at the time but I remember hearing him start it up in the mornings and drive past me as I walked to the bus stop for school with subtle turbo whooshes thinking it was the coolest most sleeper car you could buy. He ended up selling it very soon after buying it because of reliability issues of course but that memory is so clear in my head when I saw the thumbnail it brought me right back to 2008. These cars are so timeless!
Now that there is not many of these cars left, I wished I kept the old 2000 Audi S4 B5 my dad gave me when I was 19. Instead of trading it for a 2012 Audi S4 B8 just after 4 months of ownership in 2017.
I don't know what is wrong with Audis in America but here in Germany the S4 is famous for running 400k Kilometers +, making huge Power Numbers and a good material quality. Sure the Display has pixel mistakes sometimes but other than that. Treat the car with love and it will give you love back.
My neighbor has had one sitting in the driveway for 4 years and finally got it running this year
A buddy of mine had a B5 S4 Avant (wagon), 6-speed, sport package. That was a fun car, and the ultimate sleeper.
Finally a B5 S4 🙌🏻
The B5 S4 is that car that you either take the plunge and love it or admire it from a far away distance haha
I've been waiting for this review for years. I love these cars so much
I recently purchased one around 2 weeks ago and I absolutely love it! Good to now you reviewed ones I’ll be taking notes.
Ok, as a 12 year Audi technician, buy a b5 A4 with a 5 speed and 2.8 liter N/A v6. Do a single turbo (theres a pre firewall youre gonna want to cut out for access. Trust me.) and supporting mods (valve springs, catch can,1000cc injectors, walbro 450, haltech stand alone ecu) and im telling you right now as long as you do away with the OEM air pump/pcv/vacuum garbage, keep good timing belts and tensioners, NEVER EVER let it overheat, and NEVER EVER starve it of oil, they are absolutely fantastic. I now have 312,703 miles on mine that has the setup i mentioned above. I am an Audi mechanic so theyre far less complicated for me because im used to it. However if youre going from a foxbody to a Audi expecting the "theyre all just nuts and bolts" thing, you're in for a bitch of a rude awakening Jack.
Why everyone keeps saying that it's unreliable? It's not, I'm telling you. Just need to give them proper maintenance like to every car (especially a car which has power)...
Plus these cars are 20 years old now, of course theres gonna be a lot of things that need to be replaced 😂😂. Its not a brand new car people 😂😂
I had 2 of these. A stock silver 2000, and a silver 2001 with SRM K24s. I had a lot of sleepless nights because of my 2000. My 01 was pretty solid and never gave me Any issues. I plan on getting another one down the road. Values are going up for clean ones.
The new format in your videos are on point 👌 appreciate the content 🙌💯
I'm biased since I had an Audi S4 1992 5-cylinder turbo engine in it with the UFO brakes! It had an ECU and coilovers from the same company based in Germany. Don't remember the name of it but they did go from Audis to tuning Jaguars. With the mod where you cut out the restrictions between the exhaust tips and muffler and a K&N filter in the oem air-filter box. It had around 300hp. And man it was such an awesome car. The handling with the little extra power was just amazing. Living in Sweden and we had snow/ice roads the 2 winters I had it. With studded Continental winter tires it was so fun driving on the snow gravel roads. Look at the Swedish WRC Rally and you see how our roads is out on the country. It where scary fast so where more fun for the safety when I drove it on the ice lakes LOL. Would be cool to have the first generation of the S4 again and of cause with the 5-cylinder turbo engine in it!
Nice review of the B4 S4. It would have been awesome if they keeped the 5-cylinder turbo engine in the S4 modells. Glad that they took it back in the S3 lately.
I remember someone from our neighborhood had one of these in blue and I would come back home from school on foot just so I could look at it in the driveway. Such a cool car. Will own one if I get the chance.
Finally! Been waiting for you to review one of these! I LOVE these especially the avants I just hate that to do maintenance to the turbos the whole engine has to come out but honestly these things can be made so fast.
Honestly it's pretty easy to pull the motor in these tho. It was designed to be done for service. I can pull mine in a little under 6 hours if I rush.
the b5 is still my favorite a/s4 body, especially the avants, so clean
Nice review, as others pointed out it’s not a compound setup. But other than that it’s nice to see a modern review on these cars. Would like to see you do a review of a highly modified one now!
My buddy is getting his built block back for his B5 S4 next week. Will be pushing 600whp...cant wait for the ride
We need to get a Volvo V70R review going! Like so David can see this!
I have been waiting on this one forever! Thank you. Love the B5 S4/RS4
I’ve been waiting for this :)
I've always been a fan of the S4...and they do have a distinct sound, just like the R32. There's no denying what it is when you hear it!
Loving all the VW/Audi content lately!
Always wanted one of these back in my VW days. Twin turbo V6, AWD, sedan, 6spd manual. Ticked all the boxes for me. Just was terrified by the reliability lol
I have a stage 3 (k04 swapped) s4 avant @27 psi. THATS when they get real rowdy🤣 stock turbo even tuned is just.. bleh🤷♂️ k04s at high boost and gd. The power and torque delivery is INSANE. Just rock steady from 2k rpm to redline. Throw a B7 RS4 clutch and pp in there and it's a killer mix. I run the same clutch on my BAT 1.8t. (Still one of my favorite cars) I have a noggy 4.2 S4, the stage 3 s4 avant, 2 a4s (1 k04 1 completely built, ie rods 240.. clutch and everything imaginable with a BIG ass turbo.. that one. That one is my favorite. Absolute rocket sling shot)
I recently got into Audi with the purchase of an rs3 and I have to say that I enjoy it. I also got to go for a ride in a s4 and you are right you can feel the cool factory of that car.
Yesss happy to see something like this on the channel
A friend of mine had one, it was amazing, with upgraded Garret turbos, full bolt-ons, suspension, etc., but he literally needed to tow a trailer behind it picking up all the broken parts continually falling off it, ha ha. Still love a B5 S4 though!
I feel like the B5 S4 is the epitome of a project car! So amazing when it's running, so much potential, but so many problems and continual things to fix!
I have always loved the S4 B5. Always wanted one, but never wanted the headache, and I drive a built DSM lol.
B5 is my favorite car!! I had one when I was in college and I wish I took better care of it and held onto it.
I get very tired hearing how unreliable the B5 S4 is. Mine is now 23 years old and I have owned it for 18 of those years. It has done 292k trouble free miles and drives better today than it has ever done. Why? Because I maintain it properly, drive it sensibly and have not tuned the funk out of it.
Owned a B5 A4 Stage 3, brothers owned so many Audis including a B5 S4 stage 3 as well and now that I own a B8 S4, the B5 will always be my first love. Actually been looking for one as well but the B5 RS4 is the dream.
The first Audi I ever drove was the s4 v8. Fell in love with the redline and never looked back. Of course I'd love the r8 v10 but can't speak from experience.
I love my b7 s4 avant. Fast intensions catless dp, jhm stage 2 flash & millteck exhaust. Sounds mean. Gna go ported intake & ported heads for a little then supercharge it. But yes 💘
Awesome! I love these cars. I e had mine for about 4 years now. It’s got a stage 1 APR tune (a must) and that’s all I’m gonna do to it. Maybe CIA and Exhaust. If you can do most of your own wrenching, they’re great car to have. If you can’t, it will empty your wallet. To be fair though, most of the stuff that breaks on these cars are wearable things that would break on any car. Rubber components like bushings and hoses. Electrical things like sensors. This car simply has a lot of these things and they’re all 20 years old now. The drive train and hardened metal parts(chassis, linkages etc) are amazingly solid.
I have a C5 A6 with the 2.7t with K04's on 20psi , all supporting mods, had it for 5 years now, been spendy but man their a blast!! It's a sleeper for sure.
i was gonna buy one of these a while back, k04 turbos, NA cam(s) etc. made like 450 low 550 high on 93. was a pretty sick car lol. insanely fast with that quatro system, would spin all 4 tires doing 80+ and it was on some decent rubbers.
Been a Audi B5 owner since 2010 I've owned 3 since then... 2 1.8Ts and currently a 2.8...
2.8 is getting a full S4 drivetrain and 2.7t engine swap 😁
I bought one last year for 2000$ and I’ve been fixing it up I’m going to take out the ko3’s and put in ko4’s tune it and cosmetic work I can’t wait till it’s running perfect it’s my dream car
I’ve had my B5 S4 for 9 years and I love it and it’s only ever left me stranded twice but that was also when my crank shaft was going love the car never want to get rid of it would love to restore it to complete perfect shape one day that’s the goal
The S4 B5 is just an amazing car
I just love the looks for some reason
Back in high school 2003 as a senior this was my dream car. This or a mk4 R32.
Thanks for helping out my resale value.
I’ve owned mine for 6 years and love it. But it is stg 3 and spends almost more time in the shop and on the road but I also beat the breaks off it! So i expect shit to break.
Just sold my B5 S4 with K04s and state 3 tune a week ago. This video gave me instant sellers remorse. Damnit David
I literally bought a b5 s4 yesterday lol!!! Stage 1 revo tuned. Loved them for a while and got my terminator first, (dream car) and the I came across a great deal and figured it would make me a fun daily!! Nice video!!!

@@jpcustodio3973 yessir I’ve still got it, I’ve had to do a few things here and there on it. But it’s never left me stranded and it’s a blast to drive. I plan to go stage 3 with it sometime soon hopefully.

Hell ya! You need to get into a big turbo car and see how fun they actually are, I’ve got a stage 3 RS6/k24 hybrid S4 and it’s completely different then a stock K03 car... but yes you nailed it on reliability though, just can’t stop fixing it
Great review man !!
AYER HE FINALLY DID ONE, i miss mine and want another b5 so bad
Finally !!! I love these vw/Audi reviews !!! Maybe next do porsche
I LOVE THESE CARS. Main reason I stayed away is because I don’t have a garage, barley any tools, and just aren’t in the position to be able to wrench on them. Love the b5s though. Especially the wagons

I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!!!!!
The 2.7t isnt that unreliable its just a paon in the ass to work on them. For almost every little thing you have to pull the engine
Facts 😂😭😭
no the little things that suck on these are what make it an unreliable car. id pick the b6 s4 over this 10x over and the b6 requires you to pull the motor to do chains😂
@@nathanmercado7370 Hard pass. I tossed my 4.2 on my B7 and went 2.7. Way more expensive but the V8 is best when fully built with a turbo slapped on lol

good afternoon David. nice vid. liked b4 watching b/c I knew it was going to be good
The biggest downside to the car is simply this, you have to pull the motor to replace turbos. Everything else beyond that I would find perfectly normal for a car like this.
thats why you go single turbo then maintenance is a breeze
