American Life is unquestionably one of my favorite albums. Mirwais is a magician and his collaboration with her is always as creative as it is explosive. 💥 Dance beats clash behind organic/mechanical influences. France loves Madonna ! 🇨🇵
Very underrated Album & Song!! This is where "Ageism" in our society today rules. It's always the "Newer, younger people" who get the airtime/pushed to the masses even when a lot of it's terrible! Not all is bad, but a lot of it is!! She is a Queen for a reason who was not only in it for the money & fame, but she Loves the art of making music that she continues to put out do this day!! Same as the Pet Shop Boys!! Both have released new albums since the beginning of their fame!! Thanks Dereck!!
Great reaction again. "X-static process" is an album track from the "American Life" album that merits a reaction. It's much more stripped down, a very pretty song.
The end of the video is a reference to her “erotica” video she said when you’re naked everybody sees you but when you are all dressed up nobody look at you
This song deserves so much more back in the day, the production, the video, the remix package, everything is perfect, would love to see videos reacting to full albums. You like hollywood? listen to the instrumental version... you will have a really earga** Liste to love profusion and xtatic process from this same album too
@@Mysicalgreenunicorn03 it probably would've been a hit but the album would most likely still fare more or less the same. It's just a very unconventional album from Madonna, just like Erotica. Madonna always wants electronic music to have a soul, so some live instruments. This is very folk mixed with electronica kind of album. Definitely worth listening to the entire album.
X-Static Process is my favorite song from this album. She does some amazing harmonies with herself. It is a deep dark song about questioning. Hollywood fits perfect within the American Life album....not only is AL political but it is about questioning norms and challenging the status quo. Hollywood is an illusion. Fame is an illusion yet you would sell your soul for it. The dirty little secret.
It's midnight in Italy...we are living in this dark times... And I am wondering how I am forgetting all the sadness looking at your videos. Listening your comments to this song is like to sharing emotions with an old friend. Thanks Derek ..and sorry for my basic-english.. good night from Italy. Gabriel
AMERICAN LIFE is such a great album & speaks lots of volume of someone who’s lived through it. Would enjoy watching you react to the whole album or the Love Profusion music video !
In the album version the "plug isn't pulled" and the electro synths play the song out. Love love LOVE Hollywood SO MUCH! Thanks for the great reaction, Derek
I have heard this song hundreds of time. But, I am also hearing it for the first time, watching you listen to it, noticing what you notice, as you explain and interpret. You go there. You go deep. You pick it apart, you see the whole, you see the bits. Your interpretations of the song, video, beats, it is all well rounded, and perhaps some of the best reactions to Madonna on all of UA-cam.
To this day I cannot understand why this was not a phenomenon. This song is just freaking amazing, so complex and well structured. Such a joy and a surprise all wrapped into a rich experience. Always happy to listen to this one #thumbsup
love this song, so catchy and very underrated, because Madonna back then started to be victim of Hollywood ageism. She was considered as an old eccentric/weird singer by the young public who didn't know much about her legacy and prefered to listen to new and younger Pop/RnB acts such as Justin timberlake, Beyoncé and her overrated "crazy in love" etc
Great song and social commentary. Her voice and the production value are on point in this album. I've always liked this album and its acoustic and intimate feel. Love Profusion has a nice video; x-static Process is a beautiful song.
I hope you'll do the Music album next. Cannot wait to see you react to the video to "Don't Tell Me". And it's got "Paradise (Not For Me)". Audio only, but still...
This is an homage to french photographer Guy Bourdin. She is portraying one of his models in the 70's and Mondino - the video director - plays Bourdin on the "photoshoot". Guy Bourdin is know for his bold and provocative work.

Hey Dereck, please react the Love Profusion video, the last video from American Life. Great job man!
What happens to you when you are in front of your wildest dreams, as close as possible to touch fame and fortune with your hands and the light shines on you? Madonna retraces the path of her early career when a young naive unknown girl arrived to the place where her dreams came true. The B&W TV just shows her beginning without money and how fame can change people (the diva all dressed up to the nines). She does this retrospective from an external corner as to say that her status didn't succeed to change her, at least not fully, at that time she had the right age to take stock of her life . This is the most "grunge" of her songs, crowded with chaotic sounds: a grunge guitar, a perfume spray audible from time to time, emergency sirens, birds's tweets, childish voices fading into grotesque raps. The duality of life is widely represented. The fairytale of the failure of the free will. How many of us can discern real life from shiny pictures?. The video is openly inspired by the works of French photographer Guy Bourdin . The raw ending sees a "divine star" detaching the TV with the young girl on, in search of a rideshare, this way she "kills" who she was before the fortune, free will... Hollywood can confuse your thoughts: " I lost my memory in Hollywood,...I'm bored with the concept of right and wrong". She takes note of it, it's like a dilemma to her, you have to give something of yourself to have something else in return, just like selling your soul for fame, just like the movie "Death becomes her" from director Robert Zemeckis, it's more than a funny Hollywood comedy. It's real world life
The magical layering of instruments , her luscious voice and the scenery, including her totally fab costume changes make the song amazingly delicious!! and you are always interesting and knowledgeable. I love it when you get excited about good music and vids Thanks my man!!!!! 👍💙👊zane
Great Reaction! I Love This Song & Madoona As An Artist! It Was With This Song She Kissed Britney Spears On Stage Of The MTV VMA Awards! Thanks For Sharing & Take Care!
Underrated gem from American Life. The album went down to shits chart wise due to her stance on the Iraqi war, which she made a point on with her American Life music video that was pulled. And after that the whole album tanked with all the singles. I also love the remix that she used for her Reinvention Tour interlude. Mother and Father is another good song from the album! Again, do not miss the Reinvention Tour
You liked American Life and now Hollywood. You MUST react to American Life album, all the core of the album has that social commentary and production style. You will love it.
Hi Dereck ! Greetings from a French subscriber ! For your information, this clip is a tribute to the French fashion photographer Guy Bourdin. Here in France he is very famous for his Charles Joudan women shoes advertisment campaign which started in 1957 and ended in 1981 exclusively for the French Vogue magazine. Colors soaked, women with strong make-up, the shoes always presented BUT with models surrounded by death (yes !), it was its main obsession. Guy Bourdin, was the one who could mixed in a picture for luxury female shoes, sexuality (the life pulse) and death (the opposite)...absolutely facinating ! It's obvious that Madonna was/is sensitive to Bourdin's body of work. A last thing, the birds at the begining of the song, come from Mirwais Ahmadzaï (fabulous talent as electronic musician "Disco Science" record ouch !) origins, the swiss and french producer of the AL album. His father is from Afghanistan and in the Persian culture the birds singing are holy.
It`s never too late to discover quality music, and Madonna always led the way in that regard, i never listen to the radio anyway, my play list is much more interesting.
Such a good pop track with good lyrical content and masterpiece production and vocals ...But it was not well received by the critics and it was her first song not to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 (US radio ignore her because of the American Life backlash few months before ...) Another french collaboration with Mirwais and the music video was made by the great french photographer /director : JEAN BAPTISTE MONDINO (by the way the only country where AMERICAN LIFE album and singles were really successful is FRANCE around 5 times gold for the album and Madonna always thanks the french for often appreciate her work more than her own country !)2 years before HOLLYWOOD the song DONT TELL ME was also on the same "french vibe" :a MIRWAIS production (and also Michel Colombier for the strings ) and MONDINO also made another great video; the song DONT TELL ME was a worlwilde hit (US TOP 10 , biggest airplay song in EUROPE ) and the video was everywhere (and i still heard the song on the french radio ! The AMERICAN LIFE album is one of favorite with a lot of accoustic guitar , strings and electro mixed .Next singles released for the album :LOVE PROFUSION(good track /production ) and NOTHIING FAILS (such a beautiful ballad and masterpiece production )
And to be honest some of the setups in the videos are copies of Bourdin's photos. Still a stunning video that turned me on to him and his work so I'm all for it.

Interestingly Madonna "borrowed" each look in this video from the photographer Guy Bourdin - his estate sued her for copyright - each set is an exact replica of his work
Out of curiosity, did you forget this song was performed with Britney & Christina at the VMAs, which you reacted to? Whats funny about this video is that Madonna has never been opposed to cosmetic procedures which in the last 10 or so years, she has had. I think it’s worked for her, some of her pictures on her IG make it look like she’s had more work than she actually has because on video it doesn’t look bad at all. I think back then she was probably just not really doing it but wasn’t exactly opposed. The ending of this was to show that you have the ability to change the channel, watch what you want and listen to what you want, you don’t like it? Change it. It’s up to you and she’s gonna do what she wants whether people like it or not
I remember watching this video back when I was 7 seven years old thinking "OMG This lady is crazy, all those injections in front of the camera..." Madonna and T.A.T.U. got me completely shocked back then. After one week I was like " PUSH THE BOTTOM, DONT PUSH THE BOTTOM..." SOOOO GAY hahaha. I think this is my first gay memory hahaha. Amazing reaction Dereck
And then, Madonna became the most important Queen of all for me 🦄❤
Please do skin track from ray of light. 😀😀👍
💗 yes, skin is so epic
Yeeeess, that song is such an experience, towards the end it gets out of control, and eargasmic exotic chaos!! And the lyrics are very suggestive
@@ivann.1916 definitely it's so unique to the rest of her catalogue and omg you summed it up well. Definitely eargasm 💗
