- Marx Steve McQueen "Wanted Dead Or Alive" Mares Laig Gun
Steve McQueen's big break as an actor came not on the silver screen, but on television. Audiences got their first exposure to the future superstar in the western television series "Wanted Dead Or Alive" which aired from 1958 to 1961. In the series, McQueen starred as Josh Randall, a bounty hunter who uses a cut down model '92 Winchester rifle in the show, which was completely unbelievable, but entertaining. This unique looking gun was referred to as the "Mare's Leg." On the show, as implied by the title, no one stood a chance against Steve McQueen and his sawed-off gun. Toy model guns were soon showing up in toy departments nationwide as Marx moved to capitalize on the show's success. The show climbed into the the top ten its second season and launched one of the great careers in the history of Hollywood.
Offered is the 13 1/2" version of the gun. It is in very good condition, with some rusting on the metal. The gun is made to simulate a Winchester's action. You can cock it, but pulling down on the handle and snap it back to simulate loading the next "bullet". Of course no bullets are used. The trigger works perfectly. This is a click pistol. It is not intended to fire caps or anything else. Simply makes a nice loud click sound when "fired". It works perfectly, nothing sticks or is loose.

I had one with white plastic bullets too.
When toys where toys..laig is the way mcqeen drawled it when he said leg..takes roll caps..needs saddle ring..oh, and never skip on these, ive only had one in the last 20 years..
I have one and I have not cleaned it an it also says it on the side of the rifle official
R they supposed to look real miniature like that it almost looks like a key chain yea he found it in a old lady that had kids and she lived there at least from 1949 till I know 2014 in the same house but yea they worth almost I've never seen one before it is cool I think
R they worth any thing?
What is it worth?
I had one but don’t think it was like this. Don’t recall if it was this gun or the Rifleman’s which had a metal piece on the lever which allowed the the gun to fire every time the lever was returned to normal position. The opening credits of The Rifleman show this but I thought Josh Randall’s gun could do the same thing. Perhaps my “mare’s leg” was Mattel and not Marx.
I had one as a kid!
It was common to call a large revolver a "hog leg" hence the reference to a larger "mare's laig"
Why you look so mean?😂
Some spell it mare's laig and some spell it mares leg. McQueen called it mares leg because he said it kicked like a horse or Mares leg. Mare as in horse.
I have a miniature original wanted dead or alive shotgun my friend found it buried under bout 6 inches of dirt is it worth any thing?
If it’s been buried, likely not due to condition issues.
I would say laig is a way to get around copyright infringement.
Hahaha, I guess it worked!
Not a true copy! the armor is round in the serial, while this is another shape, and the barrel is shorter !!!
This toy is from the original manufacturer.
My bad!
Yes it is.
its a cap pistol
pull lever down leave open
on the left side front of lever raise flat cover plate to reveal a spindle
put roll of caps on spindle
thread end of cap roll to the rear between flat platen and striking hammer
when you close lever advancing arm presses against caps
squeeze off the trigger activating advance and hammer cock
at the end of trigger pull hammer release's under tension and strikes cap
SNAP
release trigger to reset action "double action"
BOB's your Auntie
laig, sounds like southern accent

He carried 45-70 cartridges in the Gunbelt to look more intimidating. What he actually had was a cut down (major laws broken: ATF Paid a visit to the set! Must be Registered!) Winchester 92 in 44-40. No idea of Magazine (Tubular) Capacity, maybe 5-6 most? Never recall him shooting more than 4-5 shots! He was a Method Actor and always did things with his hands to catch the audiences attention so reloading!

SPELL CHECK!...Leg is spelled L E G ! Not Laig!!
It’s spelled Laig on the rifle.
It is a phoenitic spelling of how it is pronounced.
Himh( 😊😊.
