I actually had one of these as a kid, my grandmother picked it up at Woolworth's. she thought it was a kids radio like a walkie talkie. of course she didn't think that young boys even back in the 70's should play with toy guns. and when she saw me running around her yard with it fully open. it suddenly disappeared.
Well that sucks! I pretty much got guns out of my system as a kid. Haven’t had one since.🤞🏼 But… maybe I’ll go try to find one that’s also a radio and start over.
You know… for grandma and country n all that. Agent crazy legs, out. 😉
You should have got Q to issue you another one.
Kurt would eventually drop the Mattel Radio Rifle and pick up a scoped Ingram MAC-10 in the movie "Escape from New York".
That's Kurt Russell.
I THOUGHT SO! Thanks!
I recognized him too! He hasn't changed much.
Which one Mattel or tootsie roll
Snake pliska that the name
"That's a tune they didn't expect" might be the best Bond line ever...
Haha yes, I love his delivery of that line.
I sooooo remember The Mattel Agent Zero M line! Especially the camera that flipped into a gun! Totally Boss!
I am lucky to have grown up when I did.
Being a kid back then meant pretending, innocence and fun.
A better time when you could be a kid with toy guns and more and no one was afraid of any of it.
You could bring these to school and get an A for Show and Tell.
Also, it must be noted that with all this kind of stuff, there was no violence in schools.
That came from proper upbringing, family, school and respect.
Yes, it was a better time.
+George Vreeland Hill Back then you could play with BB guns on you front lawn and no one blinked an eye. The cops didn't even sweat it.
Vintage Kurt Russel. My brother and I had all of Agent Zero's equipment. Wish I still did.
Same here and the infamous Johnny Seven!
I had both the "radio" and the "camera". What was neat about the "radio" was that the stock and barrel would snap into place as you held the handle - just as Kurt demonstrated.
Holy shit, my Grandfather gave me one of these for Christmas when I was 10. I loved that fricken thing!
I also had one of these toy guns. It was the best one made for good old 007 imaginary play as a child.
Funny thing is that Magpul actually came out with a prototype submachine gun very similar to this in 2008.
The Magpul FMG-9.
Who'd have figured back then that Kurt would star in so many movies? Really loved his character in Used Cars.
Yep. I had one of these as a kid. Guessing I was 6 yo so would have been 1966ish? I assured our neighbors that I was close by--ready to serve and protect!
that first one with a young Kurt Russell must have been made during TVs "spy craze" in the 60s
It was, I had one. Also had the camera that turned into a pistol....also "Zero M"......
I remember I had the camera one.
omg, brings back memories, I had that rifle and the pen with the secret glasses. they were a red film. there was also a brief case that shot a plastic bullet without opening it. and a hole for a camera that you could take a picture with no one noticing. it was fun to play spy back then. 007 was so popular.
It was called Secret Sam , I believe .
Yep, me too! I had both. As fate turns out, I am an International Assassin. Good Times.
It sure is Kurt Russel. Was lucky enough to have one of these. Took down a lot of stupid enemy agents, too! Really did play a tune they didn't expect.
That was Kurt Russell in the commercial.
Probably one of his earlier television appearances.
So that was Snake Plissken as a kid.
Meh, he looks more like a young Jack Burton to me.
@@zagnorch1336 Come on now, that's RJ MacReady!
@@SMAXZO He looks just like an adolescent Gabe Cash.
Correct, firearms training as a youth.
And sixty years later? Nothing has really changed except his capguns have louder caps now.
Later , Secret Agent Zero M sleeps with the hot "Sock it to me" Laugh-In girl. All in a day's work.
baraxor 😆
...and STILL sleeps with her forty years later!
"You probably think I'm just an ordinary guy. But in the sinister world of counterespionage I'm know as R.J. MACREADY, helicopter pilot, US outpost #31
The Thing would have been better if Kurt played Snake and was sent there to take on the creature.
This was Mattel's entry in the "spy toy" sweepstakes, in 1965. Kurt (as "Bobby") divided his time between commercials, roles in feature films and guest starring roles in TV shows {"GILLIGAN'S ISLAND", "LOST IN SPACE", etc.}. The NEXT spot is a 1965 Tootsie Roll ad, with character actor Bill McCutcheon [he's also in a 1966 Geritol ad that Ira has in his collection].
I knew I recognized that kid. Kurt Russell
I had one of these toys, and loved it soo much. Brings back great times to me, thanks
Snake Plisskin: The Early Years.
My thoughts exactly!!!!!!
It all started with a Mattel radio.
commercials back then are better then the commercials now a days.
i had one, those were great toys like my johnny seven
I had a friend with one of these. He always had the best toys
Ok , I think I remember the Tootsie Roll commercial. I think it was on TV in 1965. There were" Long time , long time chewy Tootsie Rolls last a long time" ads in DC Comics in 1965 .
WOW, by 64 I had the first Crosman 760 Pump, everyone else had Daisy's. Blue jean jackets, googles Army or Nazi and even motorcycle helmets was our gear.
You were probably a bit older than we were then-I didn't get to handle a real gun for another couple years.
I remember both commercials! Wow.
One of the shooting toys I never got. :( But I did _borrow_ it from my brother many times.
Double recognition, Kurt Russel in the toy commercial and the guy in the Tootsie Roll commercial played Droppo in Santa Claus Conquers The Martians.
Dear, sweet Bill McCutcheon....
I really liked that show back in those days. I had one of those radio guns but not a tuxedo. That appears to be Kurt Russell near the beginning of his career.
It is Kurt Russell, and it's an ad he made when he was 12 or 13, playing a bit younger.
Holy Shit! The Tootsie Roll commercial! That's Dropo from Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!
There was also a toy gun that looked like a camera. I had one. You pulled the lever down on the side, the gun barrel pops out the side and the grip flips down the bottom. [caps not included]
That's the one I recall.
Me too, I had one but I do remember the radio as well.
OMG, I remember these commercials on TV
I completely forgot about this.. I had one too.. it as well as many of my toys just went missing one day.. my mom decided I didn’t need it anymore.. probably gave them to some “needy’ children.. I needed them.. she didn’t have to look far..
"In all that time working those cow towns, I was only ever mixed up in one shooting. Just one. But a man lost his life and I took it. You don't know how that feels, and believe me Morg, you don't ever want to know. Not ever."
This is where MagPul got the idea for the FMG9!
+nccrawford not to mention the inspiration for the Nerf Deploy.
the toy its inspired in the Ares stealth gun, that had a little antenna when it was in "stealth" mode ;D
+perreterecon im a dummass its an UC-M21
Mattel had the good guns while growing up
I had a Mattel M16 when I was a child.
Fanner 50 cap gun with shootin shell cartridges.
I had one of those, although at the time, they were linking it to the MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E TV series.
Had both of those as well as the Sonic Blaster. My buddy across the street had the camera that turns into pistol. Together we kept the neighborhood safe from foreign agents.
Thank you for your service.🪖
@@starrywisdom It was the least we could do.
Seems like there was a camera that snapped into a luger too. I wanted this shit but dammit, I never got it.
You know what ol' agent Zero M says at a time like this? Old Agent Zero M says 'What the hell' "
Is that Doodles Weaver (from Spike Jones' band) in the Tootsie Roll commercial? DANG!
Radio that turns into a gun? Reminds me of the Japanese Microman line from the 70's/80's. Vehicles & cassette tapes that would turn into things like robots or weapons.
OH MY GOSH! I KNOW THAT ACTOR!!!!!!!! It's nice to see his early years haha
" long time, long time, chewy, chewy tootsie roll lasts a long time, "
I started singing this when I was eating one because it brought back memories of when I was a kid . The old lady thought I was nuts. Her top end reminds me of the candy " Milk Duds " but there's no song for it.
Haha Kurt Russell! No way, this commercial is so vintage and awesome
Billy Mumy appeared in several Mattel commercials in 1961 and '62.
I saw the radio gun used as an actual prop in one of the KOMMISAR X series of 60s spy movies. I was pretty impressed when I first saw it, but not so much now seeing that they just used an off the shelf toy from Woolworths.
OK, did no one notice that's KURT RUSSELL as AGENT ZERO M?!
Yes, they would. I remember a toy that came with cowboy guns and Indian bow and arrows; that sure wouldn't float these days. I got the radio/gun for Christmas when I was a kid.
If Kurt walked into a restaurant with that toy gun today he could get away with it. If I did it in this day and age cops would spray me with bullets.
+matrox - that's because he's Kurt Russell! Are YOU going to tell him "No"...?
Thats some slick stuff right there
Holy cow... it IS Kurt Russel
in a way, this is pretty much the grandfather of the Deploy, and of course the russian PP-90 submachine gun which was often seen in RoboCop 2
The young _Snake Plissken!_
I has one. Loved it
I not only had the radio/rifle, I had the camera/pistol. We definitely had much cooler toys in the '60s than kids have today.
Come to think of it, I also had the 007 briefcase, with the luger that had the attachments that turned it into a rifle with a scope, the knife that came out of the side, the "camera" on the other side, and the "bomb" (caps) that went off if you opened it with the wrong combination.
Had this toy also........killed alot of enemy agents with it......lolo.....thanks for this.......memories.......
How did that guy make the sound of the horn with his mouth like that? Wow!
That radio is badass
That toy kicked ass
Those were the days , great time to be kid .......
And only a few short years later this young man grew up to be Elvis!😏🎼🎸🕺B.W.
Nothing stops enemy agents in their tracks like a 30-foot jet of water!
had it! had the camera gun too!
that radio gun looks like a modern military assault rifle lol
its the Deploy done right
That's a tune they weren't expecting.
They were the days.
Wonder if Kurt checks these out.
And I thought the youngest I ever saw Kurt Russell was in the episode of Gilligan's Island
Even top secret agents have to mow the #@€£¥ lawn!
Wyatt Earp looking good in that little tux
Kurt Russell was cool even back then. As a kid he probably would have made a better spy than the real clowns we have today.
But, why would Agent 0 go to a fancy event with his RADIO?!! Suspicious?!! 👀
And I remember that Tootsie Roll commercial.
Really takes me back.
Thanks for these!!👍
im sure you all know this litte boy, but i had this toy sweeeet!
Was this before or after the fight with Billy Mumy in the Lost in Space episode?
This was Mattel's attempt to cash in on James Bond and the Man from U.N.C.L.E. There was a also a camera that turned into a Luger-like pistol.
Kurt Russel's vocal cadence hasn't changed much. :)
I had one of these and my brother had the camera that turned into a pistol.
I remember that radio rifle.
I remember the Tootsie Roll commercial very well. I never liked Tootsie Rolls. I had the Agent Zero M radio/rifle too.
Was that Kurt Russel as agent Zero M?
Yes
I had that toy radio rifle. Great post!
I want those !!!
I wanted one but they were too much. I ended up with a bag of green army men. Nuts!
i actually saw this used in a b-grade spy movie---lol
What year is this commercial from?
Neat seeing a young Kurt Russell!
I had one of these
Ideal Toys had 'Secret Sam' spy briefcase.
'You probably think I'm just an ordinary guy'... but in a few years I'm going to be doin' Goldie Hawn.. Yeah Babee... I always wanted this radio but never got it. I did have a couple of Camera pistols which were cool. You can still get these on ebay all the time but they're kind of pricey if they're in good shape.
That's a big-ass Tootsie Roll...
Hey! That's Kurt Russell!
The good old days.
George Vreeland Hill
Is that Droppo eating Tootsie Rolls
Back in 1960s Spy stuff was Hot ..... 007 , man from uncle , even Get smart , and spy toys
were what sold ......... now cartoons are on to sell toys
Jim Kelly I so miss that time in the 60s!!!
That second commercial sounds like the old Sims am I right? 😉
