Do you need a subwoofer with most speakers (that don't have one inside)? For music, the audiophile answer is yes. Consider: Several musical instruments produce frequencies below 45 or even 40 Hz. These aren't esoteric instruments. They include the string bass, piano, tuba, electric bass guitar, and most digital keyboards readily produce tones down to 32 Hz (pianos and keyboards go lower). Why are you satisfied with response to 45 Hz? Because the pop recordings produce the headbanger bass from about 45 to 90 Hz or so? Your head gets banged nicely. But you are missing some serious tones that occur in all types of music.
So, you're an audiophile, right? Don't you want to hear all the music in the recording?
Also beware that many common "subwoofers" only go to about 35-40 Hz. That means you are barely going to hear the lowest two or three notes of the scale -- if at all. You're an audiophile, right? Those notes are almost always there in all kinds of music, especially from basses and bass guitars.
So, no need to go lower, right? Partly wrong. There are room effects and standing waves that go down below 32 Hz that 'add' to the experience, especially of music recorded in larger halls. You can probably hear to about 16-20 Hz -- even if you're 75 years old. Frequency content in that low range adds an 'ambiance' to the experience. It is there in the recording. You're an audiophile, right? SVS and I think REL make subwoofers that can work nicely down to 16-20 Hz.
Kind of an addendum: Pipe organs often produce *fundamental* tones to 16 Hz. At the same SPL, these tones can be felt in your gut -- even if you don't hear them clearly. They are there to provide the emotion of that music. You might want to hear that. Even if you don't like pipe organ music, there's still ambient information down there.
    You're an audiophile, right?

Agreed! I would go ever further and say that most people should consider buying TWO subwoofers, if you can afford it. Having one on each side of my listening room made the soundstage from my speakers appear much larger than my single sub setup.

Build your own subs. Building great speakers is hard. Building great subs is a lot easier. I’l give you a tip, forget the imaginary “one sub” rule that seems to exist. 20hz is a world away from 40hz. Try and make one sub or one pair of subs play the full low frequency range with audiophile accuracy and it’s not going to happen. Too many changes in phase and timing across such a large range.
You want a “normal” sub, that plays strong to say, 30hz. And then you want a sub-sub. To play from below 20 to around 30ish.
Walk into a hifi store and ask for that and they’l look at you like you’re an idiot 😂

I have a pair of T1 MK I and I used them with lot of amplifications. I don't remember even one of them which Emotiva sounded bad with. But in fact, they gets very better the way you improve the electronics. I used them with Rotel, Parasound, and now I'm using them with a TAG McLaren 100x5 power amp. Very clean, natural and controled sound. No plains for changing my Emotiva speakers, only the electronics.

This is excellent reviewing! One can virtually imagine hearing the pair. And the technical aspect is significantly harmonized with the listening! The 40 Hz bass reminds me of my old pair of Rectilinear 3...measured by me down to 40 Hz...they sounded exciting in the bass range, not overdamped, and not loose. And a special bargain.

I purchased the T2 over the T1 for bass reasons. I'm not a fan of integrating subs into 2 channel listening. Steve described them well. Very airy, a.k.a transparent. Midrange is a tad dry but accurate. The T2 bass though, is in no way lacking! Try out Bela Fleck flight of the cosmic hippo. Theres plenty of low end, but fingers going across strings detail is easily heard. Price is a bargain.

Dang, too many choices in the affordable speaker category! You make them all sound so tempting, too!
One question - you mention that you paired them with your Pass Labs XA25 and heard definite improvement but you thought that was an "unrealistic" pairing. Shaun over at Zero Fidelity recently did a video where he said he thought that affordable speakers have gotten so good in the last several years that the traditional thinking about how to allocate funds may have changed and you can now spend less on speakers and more on electronics. I was wondering your thoughts on the subject. For about $5,700 and if you spent about half on the amp and half on the speakers, do you think that would sound better than the Pass Labs (at $5,000) and the Emotivas (at $700)?

    • @cliffordcostley9798
      @cliffordcostley9798 4 роки тому +7

I think that you need to backwards engineer your system.
You can pair your Emotivas with an expensive amp as a reference. Then pair with decreasingly less expensive amps untill you reach a price point where the sound is acceptably close to what you heard from the expensive amp.
You might find that the speakers (and possibly the cables) are a limiting factor.
Sort of like terminating a fire hose with a garden hose nozzle. The output (in this case the sound quality that is acceptable to you) may only justify hooking up a garden hose to the nozzle.
Unless your plan is to walk the speaker upgrade path or maybe troll the used market for a discounted classic amplifier. IMHO.
Steve has given you an amplifier that is a really great starting choice. If I were in the market for a starter, I would first consider the features that were essential. Next would I look up amplifiers that are from $100.00 below to as high as you can reasonably go without guilt. Then I would search for the most comprehensive and trustworthy reviews of the 5-10 amplifiers that I felt were the best for me. Next I would call local dealers to see if they carried the brands and models that interested me, to arrange a demo and/ or a loner (if I couldn't bring my speakers in for the demo) bearing in mind that you have a limited time to also audition your speakers.
Alternatively, you could mail order online if there is a good return policy.
One other thing. When you order your speakers ask about cables.

Do all amplifiers working within their linear range sound the same?
I don't know, but an interesting question.
      "Operating within their linear range".
Theoretically, like that, maybe they do. Theoretically is one thing, but hooked up to a complex load... that's different.
      There's differences.
Over time however it's become clear to me that amplifiers do sound different ... significantly different.
Similarly to certain loudspeaker colorations, once you've heard the characteristic, you become adept at distinguishing that sonic attribute again.
There's countless design topologies. Some are complex buttoned down approaches. Some are designed with fewer components and a simpler design.
Some circuit approaches yield a different proportion of low order to higher order distortions.
There's poorly measuring designs that sound more pleasing than better measuring amplifier designs.
Accurately tracking and amplifying the music signal is what the amplifier is tasked with.
Once hooked up to a complex load of a loudspeaker makes that task more difficult. Impedance of a single speaker can ranges from very low to high across the music spectrum. Add in the inductive or capacitive aspect that stores and releases energy in anything but a timely linear fashion.

This all looks good. My question is, why does anyone make tower speakers with ports anywhere but straight down out of the bottom anymore? I know it's probably more expensive than just cutting a hole in the front or back, but doesn't making the port come out of the bottom make the speaker's placement much more flexible? Does it somehow make the bass not as good as a well placed speaker with rear or front ports?

Most reviewers just waste our time, talking about features, specs etc, without ever saying what they listened to, in order to reach this or that conclusion. What we cannot possibly know is how something sounds. That's what a reviewer is mainly for. What we need is reviewers to be along the following lines: "I'm trying this new pair of speakers. I connect them to this and that ref system, that through months of listening to it, I know it has this or that character. I tried these new speakers with Tina Turner's a capella vocals, but also with an 80 piece orchestra recorded at Air Lyndhurst studios. I also tried them with the 5th album of this jazz band (which happens to be a top notch recording), but also with the 2nd demo of this punk band which, understandably so being a demo, has crap recording quality. This double live album from Chick Corea, too. My conclusion is this..."
Steve does that. He tells you what and from who. The Soundnews guy also. Home Studio Basics, John Darko are more than OK, but could do better. iiWi News is so and so.
From the top of my head, people who don't (and I consider many them as trendy posers who are just full of it, spending 14min of blah blah and just one, to tell you about actual audio performance, while never being specific) are The Next Best Thing Studio, The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel, Joshua Valour, Thomas & Stereo, David Sylvia, Currawong, Z Reviews, Andrew Robinson and may be as you say Zero Fidelity (I have to check him out). Too many of them, I have to say. With these people, it's as if looking to buy a new car, but no one tells you how it behaves on the road. Yet he knows what diameter is the screw that holds the interior mirror...
Also, you rarely get comparisons between same type, same cost gear. Finally there are others who are making unboxing videos...! As if we cannot check the manufacturer's or a dealer's page and see what's inside the darn box. Go figure...! Audiophiles and music fans, my ass...

Every time I briefly view the videos on this channel you seemed to be bowled over(a form of promotion for this equipment?) by all the equipment you showed on your videos. Rather than telling us what are the names of the equipment you don't like maybe you should tell us approximately what is the percentage of equipment that goes through your house/demo room that you DO NOT like. My guess would be less than 10%. You see technology(includes design tools and high-quality silicon chipsets and more educated technical and design personnel and etc) nowadays allows the manufacturers to design easily and quickly and bring this equipment to the market at comparatively cheaper prices. Tell me I am wrong.

I've got the Denon PMA 600NE and the matching CD player (what a great CD player!) running through a set of OLD KEF Q50's and they sound very muddy to me. Except for the price difference would you recommend this Emotive T1's or.... I'm leaning towards the KEF LS50 Metas with perhaps a sub-woofer? I'm getting old and my hearing isn't what it used to be - so I'm leaning towards the KEF's. I'm a hundred miles or more from any audio showroom & got to hear the LS50's by chance yesterday (very bright - awesome). I know the KEFs + subwoofer would be more money but just curious as to your opinion between these two.

Bi-Wire? Is this Two Pairs of Wires connected at the 4 terminals of the Speaker, AND THEN 2 Wires on Each Amp Terminal? PLUS: how are the Four Wires routed (dressed?) on the way to the speakers? This may create capacitance and/or inductance between all those wires! AND some degree of Grounding touching the floor (the insulators for Each wire allow some degree of leakage for grounding with the floor).
For these reasons, I prefer a Single Pair of wires to each speaker...Not bi-wire.

I can't say anything about the sound - BUT assume this is somewhere You look at it every day....( blah +) I'll go with my Cambridge 100 w ch receiver ( silver ) and KEF Q 350 speakers - I put real Oak veneer on them, $50. for a 1 ft by 8 ft sheet of pre glued veneer, fit perfect, 3 inches left over. looks real real good. only question, how long will the veneer stick to original vinyl ?
but that system is less than $ 1200., sounds / LOOKS great to me - say E.Garanca and A. Netrebko, Opera pure excel. singers, in PCM ( SACD ?) stereo blue ray. Rock, that's all distortion anyway, deliberate overloaded Marshalls or whatever.
PS. You do a real good job with ' real' / affordable equipment, this review being an example. Not many actually have $ 10 thou t'tables, thou some do go ' all out'. no problem to those that do, to me it's like guys buying $20 thou bass boats or M'cycles.

The emotivas are 4 ohm so uf you habe a good amplifier it will push moe power at 4 ohms, so the Emotivas will play louder if your amp can handle 4 ohms. My Denon AVR-X3300 will run 4ohms but it reduces power. I have an Emotiva BasX 7 channel amp and pushes quite a bit more power at 4 ohms (125 watts) than at 8 ohms (90 watts). I personally love my Emotiva T2+ towers. When at ear level I have to keep checking to make sure my center channel isn't on because it sounds like it is. Very good imaging and soundstage. For the price, detail, and 5 year warranty, I'd go emotiva over Klipsch. Not bashing klipsch by any means but in my opinion the emotivas sound better and arent fatiguing at higher volumes. You really cant beat Emotivas for the price, and I'd bet youd have a hard time finding speakers twice that price that can match them. I have the C2+, T2+, E1+ surrounds and Vaultas for Atmos driven by their basX A7 amp connected to my Denon AVR-X3300 amd two SVS PB2000 subs. Sounds simply amazing.
