      I don't go to this store anymore, but I would go to this chain store just a little higher up than the dollar stores. They were doing a campaign for some charity, and every time a customer said they would give a dollar or two, the cashier would ring this loud bell and the crew was supposed to sing a stupid song to thank them. Talk about trying to force people to donate! When they asked me, I said, "No", and it was nice and quiet. I didn't care. I didn't need a bunch of strangers knowing that I was suckered into donating in order to get attention.

      Yeah. I think all the extra fees will just make people not go out anymore. Tips make people with less money feel bad that they don't want to pay it. I am trying to save for a home, but I only make 65000 per year. Therefore, I need to save a lot for a down payment because I can't get enough of a loan ( lol 😑). Agreed. You know, Covid was the excuse everybody used for increases in everything. Look, if we didn't frequent those businesses they wouldn't get a salary at all. We were all hit but the prices didn't go down yet tips were still expected. I don't tip extra or otherwise (don't judge, I'm less than 1% but tipping is customary not obligatory). America has gotten out of hand with tips and "would-you-like-to-donate-to-Save the whatever foundation"? at the register, or round up and donate to the whatever for whomever cause? STOP IT. Once prices start going back down to normal (now that covid has subsided to a great extend), let's get those prices back down to affordable because if they don't tips are going to be a thing of the past. I recall when tipping was a gesture of appreciation for exceptional service; however, in today's landscape, it seems like tipping has become ubiquitous. I recently came across a video where someone purchased a simple PB&J from a store, went through self-checkout, and still felt compelled to tip. The question arises: why should one tip for a transaction they essentially handled entirely on their own? It reflects a shift from rewarding exceptional service to what appears as an expectation. It's indicative of a broader issue - companies relying on customer tips rather than providing adequate wages to their employees. This shift, fueled by what some may perceive as corporate greed, raises concerns about fair compensation and the extent to which businesses pass their labor costs onto the public.

I think one of the biggest reasons tipping culture is getting this way is that the credit card companies get commission based on each sale. So if like 10,000,000 people are tipping $1 each day, it adds up to insane profits for these credit card companies. I think it's more the credit card companies pushing this out on everyone and nobody even thinks about that.

The debit machines don't prompt for it, the waiting staff don't expect it. Also the fact that prices are actually honest to begin with there (since taxes are included in the price), you can feel confident that when your meal says it's 19 pounds sterling on the menu it really is 19 pounds, not + tax, not + tip.

At the bottom of the receipt, it stated that $5 dollars was added as a tip and it would be pooled for all the waitstaff. As a former employee of the restaurant industry, I was appalled. I looked at the menu and in small print, that $5 add on was stated there also. So this restaurant not only wanted me to tip the server, but to tip the rest of the staff. I’m in agreement with the problems with tipping. Employers need to start paying their staff a living wage. Recently I noticed Panera order takers are requesting a tip. Once your order is taken and you’ve paid up front the rest is up to you. You get your own drink, pick up your order at the counter, and clear your own table afterwards. I get to tip the person who entered my order and took my money!!!
    Most restaurants in my area don’t have great service, the reason is always due to the lack of staff. If the owners would pay the staff a decent wage and train their staff properly I believe more of us would go out to eat and the owners, staff, and customers would all benefit.

If my water glass is close to empty I do expect it to be refilled without having to flag someone down.
    I think tipping is bs, but I do it if someone earned it. I recently picked up a loaf of bread at a cafe & the iPad spun around asking for a tip. They didn’t have to bag it, just walk 10 feet to pick it up and set it in front of me. No tip, but thank you have a good day.

    Story #1) US, Pacific Northwest: A sort of patisserie (take away, no indoor seating) with high-end baked goods. I order one chocolate chip cookie. The employee doesn't have to walk a single step. She uses tongs to transfer the cookie from the glass jar to a a wax paper sack and hand it to me. That took about 5 seconds, maybe less. It was a 3 dollar cookie. She flips the iPad and the first suggested tip was $5 . It went up from there. I think I had to choose "other" to get to a zero tip option.
    Story #2) Same US city. In a department store is a robotic coffee barista. I type my name and order in the iPad for a latte and yes, they ask for a tip! I look around, there are no humans visible in the coffee bar. It's 100% automated (and very cool too!). I felt bad thinking maybe the robot was a single parent with little toasters and vacuums to raise and maybe a big student loan and dreams of getting a a nicer job, I don't know, making cars? But no, I didn't tip.
    Story #3) Same US city. A deli/supermarket. They have some "grab and go" sandwiches and salads and things that you pick up from the fridge aisle and take to the cashier (you have to stand in line a few minutes usually). The system always asks for a tip. I never give one. I'm buying groceries. No one "served" me other than the cashier who is doing their job as a cashier!
    ~~~Yeah, you're right. Tipping culture *is* out of control, but we let it get that way. I used to be a super extra generous tipper when it came to sit-down restaurants, but now I'm starting to see "tipping" more as "bribing" since, as you point out, it's often asked for before the service is actually rendered, and I'm becoming ever more reluctant to tip for anything. I've stopped going to places that have a too-aggressive tip-asking system.
    *On a bright note,* more and more food places in my area (like pizza by the slice type places) don't do tips! Yes, they post signs that inform the customers that a reasonable tip (like 10%) is built into all their prices (maybe 50 cents per slice) and they don't ask for or have a system to beg or shame you for more.
    I live in California where wait service is paid minimum wage of 15.50. I have come to realize that I’ve been suckered into “emotional blackmail”.
    I’ve reduced my patronage to restaurants due to the select a tip %. I’ve been a great tipper in the past because I’m of an age when I remember when wait staff were paid less than $2.
    However, I’m rethinking tips. I’m now thinking if I do tip it should be based on quality of service and a dollar amount per person at my table. I was in a sandwich shop recently and saw the ladies hustling to make the sandwiches with a great attitude and I did tip because they weren’t just serving but preparing, same for a coffee shop. I think a dollar per drink is adequate whether it’s a small or large cup it shouldn’t matter.
When I do takeout I only pay the bill. I never tip. Here in Texas it has become so in your face with tipping. The card machines only display 15-20-25% options but I now figured out how to decline any tip. Once I was at a bakery in line getting a loaf of bread. At checkout there it was 15-20-25%. I declined without guilt. I am now a free man. I'm in my mid 70's so sue me.
    I don't enjoy eating out anymore and this is part of the reason. I try to do everything I can myself.
    This is why I don't eat out much, tired of all this tipping nonsense and I will pay in cash when I do. You are correct Nicole, most European and Asian countries find it an insult if you do tip. However when I had been stationed in Korea I found out if you tip the service improves greatly(Typically service had great to begin with) and they remember you so next time you visit you get the best seats and food in the restaurant. Unlike the USA when you tip service doesn't improve sometimes it gets worse. If I do pay by credit card at a restaurant, I will select "no tip" than hand the waitress/waiter a cash tip.
    I went through an automatic carwash and the guy standing there doing absolutely nothing wanted a tip!
    It’s not just tips, every time we make an in-store purchase we also are asked to donate to cancer, children’s cancer, save the pets, save the vets, etc and the list goes on. Then if that not bad enough I had a store that I go to occasionally ask me if I wanted to sign up for their “subscription program “ for $9.99 a month.
    Where does it end?
    I agree 100%. I love to visit the US but, it is expensive because my local currency is very weak so, I always carefully budget my trips. However, the tax is added on top of the cost and now they actually bully you into tipping. I only go to have a sit down dinner as a treat. I do not tip for take out or fast food either. As for Starbucks? No thanks. I would rather go get my cup of joe at a gas station which serves better coffee anyway.
    This is one of many reasons I don't leave my house much and prepare all my own food. The other big one is all the terrible unhealthy ingredients/oils being used in abundance because they're cheaper.
    I don't tip when asked to tip. I tip, when I'm happy with the service provided to me and if the person went beyond what's expected from him/her.
    I’m in Ontario Canada too and I hate tipping, it’s but because I don’t like to give but it’s so obligatory now. I went for lunch and my bill was $13.45 and I gave her a $20 and let her keep the change, after I thought how much did I just tip her?? Ugh. Also I hate at the cash register anywhere you go they’re asking for donations for some charity, I stopped giving to those along time ago. I know that’s different from roping but still someone asking for our hard earned money.
    I do agree it's very out of control! I live in Pennsylvania, and I stopped to top off my gas tank last night and put $10 in my tank. I was actually SURPRISED to see a full service station since that's only a thing in New Jersey, so I gave the guy a couple bucks. It was crazy to see, and I didnt mind, but in other places, tipping expectations is very high.
    I’m from the UK & it’s so different over here. We tip if we wish & certainly don’t if we get bad service. When we visited Florida in 2021 we were shocked about how often you need to tip- we expected to at table service but not for Ubers, quick service restaurant, etc. We had a money off voucher for a particular restaurant, when I mentioned it to the server his attitude changed as he assumed he’d get a lower tip. We tipped him based on the meal before the money off voucher as we were told Brits are known for bad tipping so felt pressured to prove we weren’t miserly. However we did find it crazy how we had to tip so much
