I believe the director told him to turn with the last glimmer of hope in his eyes ~ and then disappointment ~ too which Timothée Chalamet added the little nod ~ which the director loved.
Same. It reminded me of when oliver said something along "are you saying what I'm thinking?" in cmbyn. Both understood without actually saying anything.
It’s the most accurate when a girl tells a guy how much flawed they are and the guy just keeps on saying it... well I did it before watching this so... maybe it’s just me
Weirdly enough, this is probably my favorite proposal scene because even though they walk away hurt, a hurtful word is never spoken between them about the other. In fact they go out of their way to insist to each other that they'll find someone to love because they hold each other in such high regard.
I agree with you this is my favorite scene also!!! In my opinion this scene is better than the Winona Rider and Christian Bale’s Jo and Laurie proposal scene in the 90’s version of Little Women!!
Its so odd how you can love someone so deeply but that feeling just isn’t reciprocated. Like something is missing for them. Idk if anything is more heartbreaking than that.
@@Slow_Internet I'm with you bro, same with you I never loved someone like her but to think that she still wouldn't care for me... it really is heart breaking
Greta Gerwig broke my heart when she described this scene as “Laurie and Jo leaving childhood, and Laurie spent his childhood with Jo, and he doesn’t want to leave it without her”
I think he always thought that she was in love with him too and that it was just a matter of time, but that maybe she was just too scared to take that leap. Whereas he had no problem just going for it and accepting it if it doesn't work out, she just didn't want to risk their friendship
@@gfdsa2866 hah! I would wish love was that easy! Falling in love is easy ..... because of all the hormones. Being in love is hard it takes work and commitment and sacrifice . The amount which you would only be willing to give and suffer for if you had a solid reason- true unconditional love, which is not present here, it's just friendship and respect .Jo understands that but you and Lauri don't
I can see your point...I also think Jo's right to be honest. But...being encouraged that you can find someone else better by the one you deeply love....I don't know...that kind of feeling hurts a lot. If I were Teddy, I would feel the more she said, the more painful feeling her words caused. I probably would only hope that Jo could say no more after giving her rejection and just let me be alone, crying as much as I wish so as to let time heal me.
I almost cried because of how intense it felt when Laurie confessed his feelings for her and he felt her about to push him away. When he kept telling her he loved her, I was...feeling too many emotions to even express how I felt watching this scene
its ik sad to say i was actually balling, he loved her so much to get let down , and the fact that they didn't have a happily ever after together tore me apart. Though at the end all the loose strings were tied im still a little bit sad
The whole scene is heartbreaking, but what really gets me is the little head shake at 0:20 He knows she doesn't want to have that conversation, and he knows he can't go on without having it. A small detail, but it's so brilliant!
Watching it happen then in the very next scene he sees jo with another man and still looks so hurt you know it was to try to replace her not loving Amy as she is
@@SaraH-jn5db in reality, Laurie does love Amy. They can't say everything that's in the two book of Little Women in a two hours film lmao. In the end, Amy loves Laurie and he loves her
It's hard to tell in the movie but in the books years had past in between Laurie getting rejected by Jo and pursuing Amy. Not to mention that he was still pretty young, eighteen or nineteen I believe, so he was probably being an overdramatic teenager when he said he would never love another.
“And you will live and die for them because that’s your way…and I’ll watch” I will never be able to forget this line. Stabbed me at every side. The chemistry between them is palpable. They did amazing as Jo and Teddy. Just amazing.
when she says “except that” and he comes back nodding to allow her to state what she wants, that just shows how much he loves her. he was willing to hear her out even though he knew she wasn’t going to say yes, he still listened.
This scene alone wins it for me. It always annoyed me how in the other versions the proposal scene is always so peaceful, with Jo just calmly trying to reason with Teddy. In this one they let them quarrel and you can truly tell how desperate he is to be with her and how desperately she is trying to show him that she doesn’t want that. They’re actually fighting and I love that for some reason lol
The reason i like it better is because it shows more passion, whereas if they were more calm it wouldn’t feel as realistic or as heartbreaking, it feels as if they care more in this version.
I absolutely agree! Although I have loved the other version the direction of the whole movie was superb for even first-time watchers in understanding the end and how each character revealed themselves, worthy of how they ended up with. This scene, was beautifully and more captivatingly portrayed than other versions, the fighting, the desperation of Laurie, and Jo's insistent rambling trying to explain herself. It all just captured the very moment as it should be. The cinematography is also swelled, it easily became a part of my list of movie adaptations worth rewatching.
It's a modern scene... very modern... we see movement, feeling, touch... in the other versions it is everything calm and surreal... 1933 and 1949 Jo reiects Laurie embrace him 😳 In 1994 Laurie Kisses Jo 😳 Here they are more realistic... She reiects him... He becomes furios and sad... They make higher their voice tone screaming... Realistic!! she is sad too because don't love him as a lover but love him the same as an important person in her life (a soulmate without being her boyfriend) and don't want to miss him... CHAPEAU Saoirse and Timothé
I wonder if the camera angle was intentional. They’re standing on a hill so it will seem like one has the high ground and the other appears smaller. In the beginning of the scene Laurie is in the “smaller” position because he is confessing his feelings and being vulnerable, but when Jo speaks truthfully about her probably never getting married, Laurie appears to have the high ground and walks away leaving Jo at a low point. Maybe I analyze to much but I thought it was cool
“I love my liberty too well to be in any hurry to give it up.” Ugh. I feel that! But I also feel Laurie’s heartbreak. This scene forever just hits me right in all the feels every time.
The funny thing is. She loves being free. And I don't think Laurie would have ever pushed her to give up the things she enjoyed. I get that she didn't love him. But in my opinion, it didn't make sense that she'd end up with the teacher dude either. Laurie, out of anyone in the world, would understand her personality and prospects and would be the one to support them.
Laurie should have given Jo a few years to enjoy her early adulthood freedom and then asked her when she was 23 years old and he would have got a different answer. Laurie wanted to take his playmate into adulthood with him.
The open grass field they’re in, them both arguing, the wind going by fast, the yellow Jo’s wearing, and the messy hair portrays childhood so obviously yet it’s such a hidden detail. I love it so much
Also the fact that the vest that Jo is wearing was worn by Laurie in another scene where Jo jokingly get down on one knee and offers Laurie the ring that he then wears on his left ring finger for a good part of the rest of the movie
When I read this in the book for the first time, I kept re-reading it again and again, it was such a strong moment. I love that they made this scene almost the same as the book.
I know they did fantastic and he TOTALLY embodied just EXACTLY how Laurie felt in the book the way it all just came pouring out just wow ❤😍 The tragic beauty of how sad this scene is also I noticed throughout the movie their always chasing each other this is them chasing each other one last time and leaving childhood behind going separate ways unfortunately😢💔
@@alisiofficial He performed well, and he was once nominated for an Oscar for Call Me By Your Name. But this just wasn't his best work in my opinion. Saoirse was nominated for her performance here which I think was absolutely deserved. She truly outshined him in this. It almost makes you feel bad for Chalamet, lol.
The part where he asks if there’s anything more (2:33) and she says no causing him to turn away in complete defeat but then she say’s “except…” and he immediately turns back around to listen closely, holding on to any little amount of hope he has left… gotta love that!
i never forget how jo always knew laurie secretly loved her. and she always hoped that he wouldn’t bring it up- and she wanted to love him back but couldn’t
Honestly it was kind of complicated I don’t think she ever really loved him in the way he claimed to love her...in the end she said she regretted not saying yes to him and when the mom asked if she loved him she couldn’t say she did..all she said is she wanted to be loved by someone and could learn to love him in that way and her mom responded then that’s not love. She was lonely and felt like she had lost her best friend and then later on found out her LITTLE SISTER married someone who was like her soul mater (not a romantic soul mate) which crushed her.
Everyone is all about the rejection but can we talk for a moment about how Jo feels about herself? I mean, she seems to feel totally worthless and insecure. She kept hearing from Meg what she shouldn't do, what she shouldn't say, how she should look like or what she should be wearing, so she eventually believed she can't be loved for who she really is. That actually made me sad the most in this scene.
Her family despised her so much. In the book i felt it more. Amy and Meg especially. Jo and Beth are the best I couldnt stand Amy and Meg they were plain. Especially meg
@@emilywandosen8472 i know, right? I couldn't stand it reading the book. And seriously, i liked Jo much more, she just was herself the whole time and didn't try to fit in. Meg just wanted Jo to be the next version of her while Jo was awesome the way she was, though no one except this guy seemed to notice. I liked Jo and Beth too, i found Amy annoying and Meg seemed a bit arogant to me.
Jo practically hides behind her insecurities. Meg tells her to not say “cristopher colombus” so she says it louder. Amy tells her to brush her hair so Jo wears it loose and tangled. She amplifies her insecurities to the max in a way of defiance and to seem confident but deep down she is still insecure about who she is. Which is like, a mood
@@susanalopez5052 i think by doing so she forces them to accept her the way she is. Like, no matter what they say, she still does things her way. Which doesn't change the fact it hurts her they can't just take her for what she is, and she indeed feels insecure.
He's wearing the ring that Jo gave him! He has loved her for a long time, ever since he knew her, and he wanted to marry her, and now, in the advanced stages of the movie, he is still wearing Joe's ring, and I believe that he still loves her and will not stop loving her, and Amy is still Joe's sister, and he loved Amy, but his love for Joe is of the eternal kind that ends and will continue forever despite From his marriage.
She never loved him romantically, why some people still don't get it, even though Greta shows it so clearly? Jo was just terriefied she would be alone whole life, that's why she was regretting that she turned him down. Btw, I love their outfits - strict Jo dressed almost like a man and Wertherian, overdramatic Laurie with puffed sleeves.
agness2294 I think people believe that Jo and Laurie would be good together, and don’t understand the complexity of the scene when she writes him the letter. They think it’s a genuine realisation of these feelings she’s always had not that she’s fearful of the prospect of being alone. People want to believe in Jo and Laurie, especially since other incarnations of the book and movie make them look so much more suited to each other, but fail to understand why Amy is better for him. Amy actually desires him, and that is what he needs. They also don’t speak at each other which would eventually strain Jo and Laurie’s relationship.
@@sparkle9909 Good point! I am just disappointed bacause - in my opinion - this adaptation FINALLY shows this relationships from very different perspectives and explains perfectly that there are various types of love and sometimes they may be confusing (especially for Laurie, who is looking for someone who would be his mother/parent in a way), so I don't know what else we can do to make people believe it is happy ending :D
The middle schooler in me will always want them together. Their chemistry (and the actors in this version and 94 version) is so exciting to watch and yes friendship is a great basis for a relationship but as an adult I now realize at this stage in their lives it wouldn’t have been ideal. Do I think Laurie truly loved Amy, not really. I think he wanted to be a part of the March family and could have easily fallen for any one of the girls but I do think Amy helped him mature and grow so ultimately she was the better sister to end up with. My biggest gripe about this adaptation is the dismissal of Fredrich. Jo found her calling in life and married someone who supported her and helped her thrive, the fact that it was left up to the viewer saddened me a little even when it was written that was a radical view to have a career and to be married.
I'm in love with this scene. I just spent the last 20 minutes watching and rewatching. It's so refreshingly natural. They talk over each other, the intense ramping up of movement at the beginning and winding down to the stillness at the end, Laurie's small desperate movement to kiss her at 1:41 and her pulling away, the wordless changes in expression when the other person makes significant argument points. And the editing is flawless. The editors give *significantly* more screentime to Laurie and his reactions than Jo's, amplifying the heartbreak of the situation and allowing Chalamet's stellar performance to truly shine. It feels real, and I think that why I keep returning to this clip. I've yet to see the movie, but this scene has me sold.
@@medhavikasini yea. I think the writer wanted to convey that its ok to love and settle down. Your life doesn't have to be a political statement or representation of normalizing stigmas.
@@blehh010 actually, you’re wrong. The only reason why Jo got married at the end was because the author’s publisher told her that if the protagonist is female, she has to make the female character get married at the end. The author always wanted her to remain single without marriage being the ultimate goal but changed it because of the pressure concerning women at that time. Look it up.
@@jaxonrangerdiesel6406 yes, and that actually ruined the book for me. As a young girl I was always disappointed that she married Friedrich. As a woman now, I can probably understand it better, but it's a book for young girls after all...
The bittersweetness of this scene is so strange. It makes you feel something; not only pitty for Teddy, but also something deep for Jo. It’s knowing that there are some very pure feelings behind the characters in this scene. We have Teddy, who has been in love with this girl that seems like her soulmate since he met her. And then is Joe, who loves Teddy but can’t correspond his feelings, and is doing her absolute best to try to not break his heart without giving up her true self. I wouldn’t like this scene so much of the feelings were reciprocated. I like the purity of two individuals who love each other but want different things from the other. It’s the unavoidable love, the unavoidable harm, the unavoidable loneliness. Two people with a connection that ends up being painful of how much they care for each other; one with an unrequited love, the other one by hating hurting the person she is the closest to.
They loved each other and truly the ending scene seemed so forced to me like Jo didn’t want to be there at all, I think there’s a deeper meaning wanted by the writer but after the ending I hated her lol
Laurie helped to bring out the child hidden within Jo. Laurie was someone she could have moments of fun with, without having to think about the difficulties of her life. Laurie added the fun like her sisters did. However, Jo by nature was serious, ambitious, wanting to do something in life and Laurie could never be that man who would motivate her or take interest in her writing. He could never encourage her. Yes, of course, he could love her but Jo didn't need the love at the time Laurie proposed to her, she already had love from her sisters and that for her was enough. The only reason Jo wrote that letter to Laurie at the end and wanted him back in her life is because at that specific point in her life, she was truly lonely - she lost a sister (Beth), she soon realised how her other sisters (Meg and Amy) were happy with life but she wasn't. Laurie could perhaps bring that happiness back. But no she was wrong, true happiness lied in her writing, in the time she spent by herself, I'd say that's when Jo really discovered herself and therefore wrote the amazing book she did!
Finally, a satisfying explanation rather than “your soulmate just isn’t the person you end up with”. This really explains the why behind it all despite everything that was said and done
What do you expect from a guy that you rejected. Still wait and comes to you when you feel lonely after you didn’t say yes to him ? Oohh what a delusional mindset Sick L generation ❌
it sucks how normalized this kind of thinking has become. "true happiness lied in her writing" l've seen too many women lying to themselves with that exact argument, just to find later in life to be wrong and feel lonely.... so much male attention in early life makes women think thats a cheap thing that comes easy. they think love will be waiting for them when they feel like it, but in reality you get only a few good shots in life and youre done.
i feel like their relationship perfectly encompasses the idea of loving someone vs. being in love with someone. Both in the books and in the movie, Jo loved Laurie but she was never truly in love with him. I'm glad that both of them come to the conclusion that they love each other platonically and I think that's beautiful.
Platonic love is often the best foundation for a lasting relationship, as it's less selfish and demanding. One doesn't expect so much as in romantic love. Platonic love generally lasts longer than romantic love. However each case is different.
@@mfjdv2020 yeah sadly most media and such tell you that unless your heart flutters all the time it’s not love. People have a very VERY large misconception of what love is in western societies
Ana Alves I was reading the chapter the other day... the main difference is that Laurie thinks she’s really in love with Friedrich and that’s why she’s turning him down. He can’t accept that she can’t love him the way he loves her. 😪
Even though I hated she didn't say yes, I loved it. She is such a strong character, always trying to be true with herself and that's what I admire about her. She is seeing this relationship realistic, I think she also doesn't want to hurt him, even if he doesn't understand it. She doesn't want to fake happiness or fulfilment, she doesn't want to force herself to lie. Even though she is risking a lot, she won't exchange stabilised life for not being independent and feeling like she is just a beautiful face
She didn't love him though. In the end she reconsidered because she was lonely and depressed. Feeling heartbroken at Beth's death, and just wanting the comfort of her best friend back.
Cheezy Films Productions yep... I think it’s ok to ship them... but other people go so overboard sometimes and hate her for breaking his heart. We should never be with someone out of pity or loneliness. I love that their relationship shows that soul mates come in all shapes and sizes.
Pingu Nootson They would have been terrible together. Jo was right. Her dreams were different. She shouldn’t have had to accept a proposal from a man who she always saw as a friend and lose the freedom she already had. Jo was very against a life like that. And the fact that she didn’t love Laurie probably made it much easier for her to say no. I love Jo’s character for her determination. I think she’s wonderful. But I don’t think Laurie was her soulmate. What they had was cute and fresh and new. But it would have ended in disaster.
R V exactly. And taking into account that Laurie has no female figures in his life. Of course he’s gonna fall in love with the first thing he sees! Not downplaying their chemistry, but I think if he had a mother or sisters, he wouldn’t fall for his friend quite as hard as he did. So it makes sense that Louisa wrote him that way.
Jo is such a mature young women, there's a truth in everything she said in defense on why she didn't want to marry him... Laurie loves her with a mere expectation on they wanted to be happy, but Jo sees everything in reality. So, that's a very mature of her to think like that, because most young women, especially in current generation sees marriage as pure happiness, but they don't see the reality to it, the responsibility you have to carry, the chemistry you need to find to make it last, it's not just love.. it is much more than that. I love this scene so much.
Thank goodness for this comment because I'm once in Jo's place and people seems to get angry at me. I just stated what I feel and my view. That's all ').
Now explain this to my friends & family 😂 seriously, I’m just like Jo in this regard but people don’t seem to understand why I am. Marriage isn’t flowers & happiness all the time & neither is any relationship (even friendships need some work)
2:40 when she said 'except that-' and cut herself off and he turned back instantly, giving her a little nod as though to say 'go on, i'm listening' my heart died a little
0:40 I find that part to be one of the most human lines in this amazing scene when Laurie states everything he gave up for Jo and then adds the panicked “and it’s fine” to justify himself
Even though this scene is heartbreaking, it should’ve been like this. Jo never would love Laurie in a romantic way. Later she was upset because she was lonely, she wanted to be loved; we can see that she still don‘t love him romantically. Their acting is splendid, and the whole scene is like painting ❤️
Zülal Demirtaş totally agree. Amy was better for Laurie and in my rational mind I see that but I can’t help that I loved them together and this scene absolutely crushed me
@@apieceoflife2732 She was jealous of Amy bc she found true love, when she hadn't. Not bc she was jealous of her having Laurie. That's not... selfish, isn't it?
I am not ashamed at all of how often I return to this video, I just adore Timothée and Saoirse's performance in this specific scene. It´s certainly my favorite comfort video.
I like that at 1:42-1:43 he leans in like he’s going to kiss her but she leans back. Those little moments of body language acting is what helps make this scene so great agghhh
You can see the hope in his eyes when he turns around when Jo says she has one more thing to say and then it fades away, this scene it's portrayed perfectly.
Life lesson: If you’ve loved or sacrificed an amount for someone, don’t expect to be loved the same amount in return. Love is not a bank transaction. And the person you have a crush on doesn’t owe you anything.
@@Pantano63 no she is not. At the end she ends up with another person right? The teacher guy. She regretted it only bcs she felt alone, not bcs she truly loved her.
When we change something bad in ourselves for the better the change is welcome, but what would Laurie change in him? He's a good man, Jo just didn't love him.
I keep coming back to this scene again and again. It's just brilliant. The acting was so natural without any overacting. Acting, camera work, setting, background music, clothes... Everything is just perfect. This scene breaks my heart every single time❤️
"I think you will marry Jo. I think you'll find someone and love them and you will live and die for them because that's your way and you will. And I'll watch." That hit homeee harder than any movie quote ever, it's been 5 months since I saw this film and I still think about it. The pain in his voice I've felt it.
I thought about this when watching the scene when the German Professor goes to her house and Laurie gets a little jealous and asks him who he is three times despite being married to Amy. Like he realised that that moment has come now to watch her fall in love with someone else
it’s been like a year now and i still think about the “and i’ll watch part”. when i was watching the movie my heart ripped out of my chest when he said that
when laurie turns back at 2:39 it just breaks my heart every single time. he so desperately hopes to hear what he wants and the speed in which he turns to look at jo is honestly just completely gut-wrenching.

i love what greta gerwig and the actors did in this scene, what set it apart from others was the energy and the movement and the scene flowed so well and made it so heartbreakingly beautiful
I love how they interrupted each other once the other one started deprecating themselves. Laurie said he wasn’t a great man and Jo fiercely refuted him. Jo started putting herself down and Laurie kept interrupting saying he loved her. This shows they truly had love for each other, except it wasn’t romantic on Jo’s part. Still, it was love and we would all be so lucky to have what they had.

I always thought that it was awkward, as if he wasn’t really sure himself what comes after
I think he always thought that she was in love with him too and that it was just a matter of time, but that maybe she was just too scared to take that leap. Whereas he had no problem just going for it and accepting it if it doesn't work out, she just didn't want to risk their friendship

I watched the movie 30 minutes ago and I can’t stop crying.
I died when 1995 Jo (Winona Ryder) rejected 1995 Laurie (Christian Bale), and I died again now.
I just can't over it why she rejected him
when she says “except that” and he comes back nodding to allow her to state what she wants, that just shows how much he loves her. he was willing to hear her out even though he knew she wasn’t going to say yes, he still listened.
Well he probably came back cause he thought she might change her mind

In 1994 Laurie Kisses Jo 😳
Here they are more realistic...
She reiects him...

They make higher their voice tone screaming... Realistic!!
she is sad too because don't love him as a lover but love him the same as an important person in her life (a soulmate without being her boyfriend) and don't want to miss him...
CHAPEAU Saoirse and Timothé
Because the other scene had this passive aggressiveness that just... sucks!
Because it's a more realistic portrayal of the human condition
Why can’t Timmy and Saoirse ever be in a movie where they finally just end up together? Seriously, their chemistry together is just so beautiful!
Because the feelings for each over are not neutral
I meant mutual
Because that didn’t happen in the book....

Jo practically hides behind her insecurities. Meg tells her to not say “cristopher colombus” so she says it louder. Amy tells her to brush her hair so Jo wears it loose and tangled. Whoa! I didn't even realize that that's what happened. Now my heart is crying..
It's heartbreaking for both of them because Jo doesn't want to hurt him and Laurie's situation is self explanatory.
“and I’ll watch” is probably the most relatable expression of unrequited love in all of literature.
I am just disappointed bacause - in my opinion - this adaptation FINALLY shows this relationships from very different perspectives and explains perfectly that there are various types of love and sometimes they may be confusing (especially for Laurie, who is looking for someone who would be his mother/parent in a way), so I don't know what else we can do to make people believe it is happy ending :D
agness2294 I agree this version really does Amy justice

YES TIMOTHEE IS SUCH A GOOD ACTOR
They loved each other and truly the ending scene seemed so forced to me like Jo didn’t want to be there at all, I think there’s a deeper meaning wanted by the writer but after the ending I hated her lol
finally someone who understands!!!
Thanks for this 🌸
She loved him, but wasn’t in love with him and in there lies the difference between romantic and platonic love.
exactly
The comment I was searching for! Thank you! 😊
Perfectly said ❤ Definitely the best explanation and summary I'm looking for.❤
What do you expect from a guy that you rejected.
Still wait and comes to you when you feel lonely after you didn’t say yes to him ?
Oohh what a delusional mindset
Sick L generation ❌
it sucks how normalized this kind of thinking has become.

Nishita kunder I mean I never said he didn’t love her
Jo is such a mature young women, there's a truth in everything she said in defense on why she didn't want to marry him...
Thank God someone in comment section understands it
I thought everybody is on Laurie’s side and I don’t get it at all. I agree.
Thank goodness for this comment because I'm once in Jo's place and people seems to get angry at me. I just stated what I feel and my view. That's all ').
Definetely! People don't even seem to really understand Jo in that scene.
Now explain this to my friends & family 😂 seriously, I’m just like Jo in this regard but people don’t seem to understand why I am. Marriage isn’t flowers & happiness all the time & neither is any relationship (even friendships need some work)
1:30 the way Saoirse delivered that line just makes me love her even more
2:40 when she said 'except that-' and cut herself off and he turned back instantly, giving her a little nod as though to say 'go on, i'm listening' my heart died a little
1994: kissing and quietly sharing feelings in a forest
2019: screaming and sadness on a hill
Omgg 💖💖💖
2019 is so much better
2019 far better
@This Nigerian Loves Drinking Garri lol, objectively, that’s a dumb af comment
They love some campy scenery chewing in 21st century.
0:40 I find that part to be one of the most human lines in this amazing scene when Laurie states everything he gave up for Jo and then adds the panicked “and it’s fine” to justify himself
EXACTLY
Don't forget the 'and I'm happy I did' i cry :c
I've watched this for unhealthy amount of times. I admire the lines and their acting SO MUCH. I really think this should have won awards.
It's interesting how both Jo and Amy understand immediately what he's asking before he says it and refuse it just as fast.
2:40 when Jo speaks again Laurie thinks that she changed her mind and gives a little nod waiting for her to accept his proposal 😭😭😭😭
frick
I could’ve lived on without knowing that piece of information that broke my heart
Why did you made me notice that !?!???😭
Even though this scene is heartbreaking, it should’ve been like this. Jo never would love Laurie in a romantic way. Later she was upset because she was lonely, she wanted to be loved; we can see that she still don‘t love him romantically.
Their acting is splendid, and the whole scene is like painting ❤️
Zülal Demirtaş totally agree. Amy was better for Laurie and in my rational mind I see that but I can’t help that I loved them together and this scene absolutely crushed me
She was upset later because she was selfish and was jealous of Amy
@@apieceoflife2732 She was jealous of Amy bc she found true love, when she hadn't. Not bc she was jealous of her having Laurie. That's not... selfish, isn't it?
I am not ashamed at all of how often I return to this video, I just adore Timothée and Saoirse's performance in this specific scene. It´s certainly my favorite comfort video.
at 1:43 you can tell that laurie wants to kiss jo so badly
And I get butterflies from this very moment. 🦋🦋🦋
Well he should’ve gone for it. That might’ve changed her mind
@@mai.vancon
No. He did the right thing respecting her expressions and feelings of protest.
i was thinking the same thing
I like that at 1:42-1:43 he leans in like he’s going to kiss her but she leans back. Those little moments of body language acting is what helps make this scene so great agghhh
Timothée and Saoirse both killed this scene
You can see the hope in his eyes when he turns around when Jo says she has one more thing to say and then it fades away, this scene it's portrayed perfectly.
one of the best scenes in any movie ive watched in a long time. the rhythm, the dialogue exchange, the script, the subtlety yet sincerity of emotions
Every one dying over the “and ill watch” but the “you can’t?” Is killing me
ME
Jodie Marie where do they say “you can’t?”
@@ellena211 1:05
Helen when joe starts talking and she says i dont know why i cant love u, i have tried and i cant, he goes ‘you cant?’ Really sadly and quietly
Yeah... That little pause before he says it kills me
Life lesson: If you’ve loved or sacrificed an amount for someone, don’t expect to be loved the same amount in return. Love is not a bank transaction. And the person you have a crush on doesn’t owe you anything.
That's love. You only give
love is not a debt.
She regretted rejecting him later on, though.
@@Pantano63 no she is not. At the end she ends up with another person right? The teacher guy. She regretted it only bcs she felt alone, not bcs she truly loved her.
@@renebaebae0600 So she regretted it like I had said? Nice we can agree.
If a single sequence could win an Oscar, this would have. It’s perfect
Laurie stating he'll change himself for Jo was the first red flag that they wouldn't be good together. Jo was right throughout this whole scene.
You also won't be good together if you CAN'T change for your partner. Change isn't always bad
When we change something bad in ourselves for the better the change is welcome, but what would Laurie change in him? He's a good man, Jo just didn't love him.
“And I’ll watch” let’s admit that hits everyone hard in some way.
The fact that Jo’s rejection of Laurie is set against this beautiful, picturesque backdrop just makes this all the more heartbreaking...
At 2:40 she sees the ring around his neck, the same ring she gave him when they were younger.
Claire Richards ooohh!! i thought he was wearing it on his finger the whole time
Wow details!!!!!!!!
Wooohh good catch
HE WAS GONNA PROPOSE HER
OOOHHHH excellent catch! You make me love this scene even more
I keep coming back to this scene again and again.
And I'll watch."
That hit homeee harder than any movie quote ever, it's been 5 months since I saw this film and I still think about it. The pain in his voice I've felt it.
I thought about this when watching the scene when the German Professor goes to her house and Laurie gets a little jealous and asks him who he is three times despite being married to Amy. Like he realised that that moment has come now to watch her fall in love with someone else
it’s been like a year now and i still think about the “and i’ll watch part”. when i was watching the movie my heart ripped out of my chest when he said that
I love Laurie's nod at 2:40 when Jo said, "except that." He was like go on, say it 😭😭😭
like he want listen to her whatever she told to him 😭
“And I’ll watch” kills me every time, I mean who didn’t start hysterically crying.
I swear everyone was crying in themovie theater
I was looking for a comment like this; it breaks my heart every time i watch this video
when laurie turns back at 2:39 it just breaks my heart every single time. he so desperately hopes to hear what he wants and the speed in which he turns to look at jo is honestly just completely gut-wrenching.
2:39 that little nod kills me he's so desperate for a change of mind by joe , and the way he looks at her at 1:42 , my heart is officially broken 🥺
A A yes I thought so too )):
Yeeessss the slight nod stopped my breath!
You should watch the 1994 version of the movie
@@iknowexactlywhoyouare8701I actually did see it a while before this came out , I think each movie has it's mood and take on the subject , wasn't really mad at the new one nor hated of the old version after the new
Yessss 😭
Jo: Meg married, Amy off to Europe, another year, you'll graduate and you'll be off on a long holiday... I'm not good like Beth, so I'm angry and I'm restless
Laurie: you don't have to stay here Jo
Jo: Why, should we run off and join a pirate ship?
Laurie: *shakes his head*
Jo: No, no
Laurie: It's no use Jo, Jo we've got to have it out.
Jo: No no
Laurie: I have loved you ever since I have known you Jo, I couldn't help it an and I tried to show, and you wouldn't let me, which is fine
Jo: No
Laurie: But I must make you hear now, and give me an answer, because I cannot go on like this any longer
Jo: Teddy, please
Laurie: I gave up billiards. I gave up everything you didn't like. I'm happy I did; it's fine, and I waited, and I never complained because I figured you would love me Jo. And I realized I'm not half good enough, and I'm not this great man --
Jo: -- Yes, yes you are. You are a great deal too good for me, and I'm so grateful to you, and I'm so proud of you, and I just don't see why, I can't love you as you want me to. I don't know why.
Laurie: you can't?
Jo: No, I can't, I can't change how I feel, and it would be a lie to say I do when I don't. I'm so sorry Teddy. I'm so sorry, but I just can't help it.
Laurie: I can't love anyone else, Jo, I only love you.
Jo: Teddy, it would be a disaster if we married--
Laurie: It wouldn't be a disaster--
Jo: We'd be miserable
Laurie: No Jo, I'd be a perfect saint!
Jo: I can't, I can't. I tried it and I failed.
Laurie: Why does everyone expect it then? Why does your family and my grandpa expect it? Why are you saying this? Say yes and let's be happy together, Jo.
Jo: I can't say yes truly, so I'm not going to say yes at all, and you'll see that I'm right eventually, and you'll thank me for it.
Laurie: I'd rather hang myself than realize this, Jo.
Jo: Teddy--
Laurie: I would rather be dead.
Jo: Teddy, don't say that. Teddy, listen, you'll find some lovely, accomplished girl who will love you and adore you, and she's going to make a fine mistress for your fine house, but I wouldn't all right.
Laurie: Yes, you would, Jo.
Jo: Look at me! I'm homely, and I'm awkward, and I'm odd--
Laurie: I love you, Jo.
Jo: and you'd be ashamed of me--
Laurie: I love you, Jo.
Jo: and we would quarrel, we can't help it, even now. I'd hate elegant society, you'd hate my scribbling, and we would be unhappy, and we'd wish we hadn't done it and everything will be horrid.
Laurie: Is there anything more?
Jo: No, nothing more.
Laurie: All right,
Jo: Except that... Teddy, I don't believe I will every marry. I'm happy as I am. I love my liberty too well to be in any hurry to give it up.
Laurie: I think you're wrong about that, Jo.
Jo: No.
Laurie: I think you will marry, Jo. I think you will find someone, and you will love them, and you will live and die for them because that's your way, and you will. And I'll watch.
Thanks 😍
:’)
so beautiful ❤
Thank you!! ❤️
I love this
His heart is broken!!! He would rather die than realize he doesn’t love her. She lists her flaws and he says he loves her. He loves her for her. He wouldn’t hate anything about there relationship because he understands her!!! He says she will find someone and he’ll watch, he won’t even try to stop it because he always s her to be happy. Boys on tv like him are the reason I’ll never get married! He’s perfect!!!
He's also a fictional construct. No human is perfect. But we can all aspire to be our best selves.
He would rather die than realize she doesn't love him*
i love what greta gerwig and the actors did in this scene, what set it apart from others was the energy and the movement and the scene flowed so well and made it so heartbreakingly beautiful
That choke in his voice before he says "I figured you'd love me". You can feel his pain.
Laurie's messy hair was a kill. I was shot right through my heart.
i just read this part of the script and it is so amazing how timmy included things that weren’t in it that truly made this scene so epic. he’s so talented
