    CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS:-
    - I say at 1:09:48, "Purchasing a piece of art locks the player out of buying any of the rest of them for practically no reason." This was vaguely worded and I'd like to clarify. I meant there was no contextual reason given (why wouldn't Redd want to make more money?), rather than there being no mechanical reason. Letting the player only take ones per day ensures they do their best to identify real art rather than just buy everything.

In my opinion, the hourly music in this game doesn't depict the hours at all apart from a few hourly themes. I don't know if you have heard the ACNL hourly soundtrack ShayMay, but every hourly theme in that game represents its hour perfectly, which completely differs from this game. I think it is because Totaka didn't do the compositions in this game, but I'm not sure; he composed the soundtrack for all the past games, and they were all phenomenal. This game's hourly soundtrack feels so... uninspired, and also so samey between each track too.

Things I miss about New Leaf:
    -Playing hide-n-seek with my villagers
    -Finding the fake gem-rock
-Villagers doing an adorable little excited dance when they approach me with news
-Villagers excitedly waving “bye” to me
    -Villagers stopping by unannounced
-Ok I’ll just say I miss the villagers and interaction with them
-The coffee shop building and the little police building
    -ISLAND TOURS
    -The 👏🏼 fur👏🏼 ni 👏🏼 ture 👏🏼
-Eels in the river (where’d they go?)
-Changing the model of my home

I dunno about Villagers stopping by unannounced. They added that to New Horizons and all it resulted in is Vivian coming to my house literally every time I'm about to start decorating or crafting and never anytime else.
But yeah literally everything else please. There's still a heckton of space on that cartridge for the content from literally every other game, just let us have it.

    • @TheQuashingoftheTub
      @TheQuashingoftheTub Рік тому +2

Another interesting thing. Villagers *do* have a lot of interactions like this in New Horizons. But with the way the friendship system works, the higher your friendship level, the less likely you'll get lower-tier interactions like help requests or games to play. Eventually they'll just start talking about they player and giving or selling items, which is ironic, considering they kinda just turn you into a Wild World Item dump the closer to "best friends" they get.

I enjoyed New Horizons overall, but it didn't hold my interest for more than about a month. Now, by a normal game's standard, that sounds like a pretty good length of time. But previous Animal Crossing entries were able to hold my interest for several months, even years.
I think I preferred New Leaf overall. It was closer to what was great about the original game, while still being feature-rich and polished. Just my two cents.

You can "repair" your tools if you customize them. It will reset their "HP" counter. (does not work for axes though)
If you talk to K.K. and let him choose the song to play it will always be a song you don't own yet, which is pretty handy after a while as there are many songs and that ordering machine often offers duplicates

    • @TheQuashingoftheTub
      @TheQuashingoftheTub 2 роки тому +4

Yeah I'm pretty sure I've memorized a lot of the dialogue from NH. While they added a lot of dialogue(that shoulda been there in the first place) they still kept generic dialogue(for example, expressing excitement over you designing their vacay home) to one singular line per personality.
Special NPCs have always had limited dialogue options in the series, but it's really aggravating in NH. Probably because it's so tedious to get through Nook's or Wilbur's dialogue every single day.

  • @purpandorange
    @purpandorange 3 роки тому +553

I could not disagree more with the Nook store downgrade being necessary, the crafting just doesn’t make up for what was lost in shop variety and ends up making the game just way to short. i think my biggest issues with the game basically boil down to how much is missing relative to early games and you pretty much hit the nail on the head when describing how in earlier games you move into an already existing town, while in this one you build it from the ground up. even having that level of customization, not having gyroids, brewster, or the roost was pretty disheartening. i felt like i was curating a little dollhouse for my neighbors when i think i would have wanted a more democratic/collaborative experience with them. i don't WANT to be the only person deciding how my town is going to look, and i feel weird having the ability to call up my neighbors anytime i want, even in the middle of the night, to tell them to move houses just because i felt like it.
if i had my dream version of ACNH i think there would be an expansion on the town rating system where you could pitch certain projects to your town and have villagers vote to approve it based on location and how much it matches the town's aesthetics, so
maybe if you have a bunch of snooty/preppy villagers they'll want a more bougie town and be harder to get a hold of, but a town with a bunch of jocks is going to be really excited about a climbing wall or gym. maybe villagers could suggest pieces of furniture they'd want at isabelle's counter, and the town could be planned out at nook's counter with him giving you a blueprint to carry around, like you said.
the game is still great and fills me with a lot of good feelings, but with how emotionally attached i am to the series after playing both wild world and new leaf during some pretty difficult times in my life, it felt really disappointing to see how flat the villagers became. maybe they'll release a big 1 year release anniversary update but idk, with the last major game released in 2015 and new horizons already having been delayed by 8 months, i would have waited longer for a more complete game rather than one missing a lot of what i'd come to expect.
thanks so much for this critique of one of my favourite game series ever! this was my first video of yours and your presentation style was very relaxing, so extra points for an accurate title :)!

I think ACNH’s UI could take quite a few cues from Stardew Valley. From giving a togglable option to highlight the tile a tool is aimed on to just letting you select where the building should move to on the farm, he really has it streamlined.

Truly. He streamlined the game without taking away from the immersion. Being able to go to robin and ask to move buildings doesn’t take anything away from the immersion of the game when that’s how you go about getting buildings in the first place. You still wake up, go to robin, hire her to do the job. You just don’t have to wait three days in between each building move. It keeps players from speed travelling through entire seasons just to redecorate your farm.

@D.A. Flint exactly, I preordered ACNH and started playing actually one day before release, but after just 2 months of playing I was finished with my Town and had nothing more to do. I then stopped playing for 3 Months. In August I started a new town, which I still play on. I didn't lose interest again yet, since I now play very slowly and not daily. It's sad that you can only enjoy the game for a long time if you don't play often...
Edit: To bring across my point better, I played on my ACNL town for 3 years without losing interest in it midway through.

  • @epyon542
    @epyon542 4 роки тому +43

Man, you hit the nail on the head on why I never touched terraforming outside some small bits.
It's extremely interesting on how you called the villagers trophies and I literally did just that. I found a way to mimic amiibos with an android app and blank NFC tags so I made the cards for the villagers my wife and I wanted and invited them so we could have the exact villagers I wanted, I, quite literally, have a designer village.
The 20% price deduction makes even less sense when you realize you don't get the bells until the next morning meaning that if you just hold off then you will get more money in the same amount of time. There's honestly no reason for the deduction besides some forced immersion or if you need the inventory space but even then you can place things outside so it's not like space is really limited.
The best way to use the slingshot I've found is with the top down camera. Even though it angles the camera down it still pulls it out and gives you a better field of view. You can line the present up with the top of the screen and you'll be the perfect depth for hitting the balloon.

  • @polyhex

Continuing what you said in the multiplayer segment: not only does online multiplayer disable outdoor decorating, it also locks out a frustrating number of other features, including but not limited to:
    - Balloon presents
    - Villagers thinking/noticing players
    - Certain creatures (spiders, wasps)
    - Animal villagers holding items or interacting with objects (they only walk around, though most go inside immediately)
    - Donating to the museum whatsoever
    - Using the Nook Miles machine/ABT whatsoever
I definitely missed some... it makes the online experience feel like something is strange, or missing, even when you’re having fun. Some of them would be a blast to have & would be fairly simple to implement; it’s a shock they’re missing sometimes.
I think one thing they added that I am SO glad to have in multiplayer is sending letters though. In ACNL you had to be *in the recipient’s town* to send a letter. In ACNH sending gifts to your friends is thankfully an option.

Just because they don’t necessarily like spending 3 weeks moving everything only to have to spend another 3 weeks to move them all an inch more doesn’t mean they wouldn’t necessarily enjoy animal crossing (though yeah, it’s fine if you don’t,) it just means this game has some really unnecessary restrictions and design mechanics which is strange given that the entire premise of animal crossing originally was to relax.

RosesBubble I’ve been playing AC for about 3 years now, and I love the games. My issue is with ACNH’s focus on island decoration, as it encourages big projects while simultaneously making such projects require unnecessary amounts of time wasting. Why couldn’t I move a building a couple of tiles in a single day? ACNH requires multiple days of planning for that. Its more of a nitpick to be honest, but I do think it goes against the core intents of ACNH’s design.

On the subject of terraforming, animal crossing should take a page out of minecrafts book, hear me out here.
Minecraft does 3 things when you're trying to break blocks. First, you have a cursor in the middle of the screen to help aiming, 2nd the block you're aiming at is ever so slightly highlighted, 3rd you need to hold the button to break the block and if you stop holding then you stop breaking it.
I think AC could implement the last two functions, a faint highlight around the tile you're aiming at, and keep the long animation but make doing it require you to hold the button, so if you realise you're doing it on the wrong tile you can let go and save yourself the hassle of filling it back in.

I prefer Harvest Moon's solution to that problem, in which holding down the button will make you stay in place and allows you to rotate the character in the direction you're pointing, and letting go of the button would make you preform that action. Though, I like the idea of highlighting the tile before doing the action, and I think it would work better if it did that while holding the button.

The biggest downside of ACNH to me, though, is choice paralysis. I loved that New Leaf gave you more control over the town, but New Horizons gives you too much control, to the point where it’s easy to become neurotic and perfectionist about your town, or get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choice and just think “this is supposed to be a relaxing game, not a degree in urban planning!” I end up feeling like a failure or loser when my island isn’t as “cool” as everyone else’s, because there’s so much control and freedom that theoretically I should be able to produce the perfect island.

I think my biggest issue with the game is that the actual gameplay is so bland.
Nintendo put so much focus on the island designer aspect of the game and not enough on anything else. Yes, you have all these great tools and new ways of customising your island, but what are you going to do with that island once you’ve finished decorating? Listen to the same dialogue from your villagers over and over again? Invite a friend over to do nothing but wander around the island?
I’ve been playing since Wild World, and I have many happy memories with this series. I think New Leaf is definitely superior here. There was just so much to do and i kept coming back to it every few months. I honestly haven’t picked new horizons up since June.

Replaying New Leaf made me go back to this video since the differences are night and day at least in terms of the fictional realism you highlighted. Sure NL was a bit of a start to some of the simplicity and a shift in power dynamics, but it was at least grounded and had some variety in villager dialogue (though WW definitely has the best dialogue out of all the entries), plus a lot more character. Being the mayor allowed you to do more than in previous games, but there were enough restrictions to the point where it felt like you were still part of the world. You couldn’t control your villagers, if the “ugly” ones moved in, or reshape your town, you just lived life while occasionally adding in a new building or decoration. Not to mention the loads of content that do help with that illusion of life. New Horizons feels more like the sequel to Happy Home Designer disguised as a mainline entry than an actual normal AC game which only hurts it.
I’m glad a video like this exists that helps more clearly details what the problems are since they definitely go beyond just the usual complaints.

A note about the flowers: in New Leaf (my first and favorite Animal Crossing title) I would often clear out swaths of flowers by running around in them until they all got trampled and disappeared. I'd be sad but ultimately fine with that no longer being an option if it weren't for the fact that the shovel I now HAVE TO use to remove flowers from undesired locations didn't break after a specific number of uses. I've given up on managing my flower gardens (I used to make random flower gardens in different locations and periodically change/demolish them as the fancy struck me) because of both the pocket space the flowers are forced to take up whether I want to move them or I want to get rid of them, as well the annoyance of my tools breaking on me in the middle of a task.
On a different note, I also lowkey hope my previous favorite villager never moves in because I don't want to see a boring dialogue-regurgitating husk of my former friend. I built a monument on top of his old house plot and a remembrance garden of black roses and clovers for him in New Leaf when he moved out unexpectedly, but I don't see myself caring about any villager in New Horizons enough to do something like that here.
But hey! Nobody can move in right on top of a path I spent a week perfecting in this game!

    • @samzyyx
      @samzyyx Рік тому

New Horizons really butchered flowers entirely tbh, the fact that rain makes flowers breed means that you have to remove them one by one every day with the shovel which can take ages, and you can easily miss flowers that are growing meaning that after two weeks your island might get completely covered in flowers.

Somebody needs to talk about the fishing tournament and having two accounts on one file.
My first experience with the tournament was multiplayer, two players on one shared ACNH file.
Me and my partner have been looking for something fun we could do together and, honestly, ACNH is NOT a good game for that. So little of the game is cooperative. This is furthered by the inability to travel to Nook Miles islands together as using tools is one of the few things the non-leader player can actually do. Seriously, two player only works online here since you can give the other player a best friend rank so you both can actually do things. Two player on one Switch are limited to far less. No split screen either.
So we got excited when we realized you could have 2 players gather points in the fishing tournament. It made us believe there was a possibility for exploit. Nothing major. The idea was that while one player fished the other player would move up the beach so that as soon as the other was done fishing, a player would have a head start on reaching the next fish. If the leader was the one moving to the edge of the screen they could just sprint as soon as player two hooked the fish and the second player would be poofed next to them, cutting even more time. It SHOULD have net us more points, if only by a small amount. It SHOULD have been possible for 2 players to work past the jank and catch 1-2 EXTRA fish per go with a bit of practice.
Except... then I tried playing a few rounds solo afterwards and realized that for the entirety of the two player side of the tournament....
My fish spawn had been nerfed.
This wasn't a "it was barely noticeable" thing either. The average I could pull solo was 6-8 fish. The average multiplayer? 4-6. Now that doesn't sound like a huge difference but when you take into consideration that two players can traverse the beach FASTER if they know what they're doing? Something was happening to my spawns. While playing two player we'd even believed that something was happening to our spawns as is but we believed it was because the tournament was supposed to be challenging. It looked like there were more fish swimming around in rivers and beaches until the tournament actually started. So why is this?
Honestly I don't really know. "Two player one account" already has quite a few perks, two money rocks--unless player one has already hit all the rocks on the island. Two money tree spawns? Extra DIY? The ability to complete a quest NPC twice? Except those things aren't fun for two players. Those are fun for exploiters, or one player who wants to progress the "main" account. Why couldn't a fishing tournament be one little thing that would be better with a friend? The lower amount of points actually DISCOURAGES this kind of play. A lot of the game does. Most of the time me and my partner spend playing the game is on one file with the other watching, only switching to two player mode for small periods to trade items if one of us gets something we don't need. It's not really fun.
I just wish there was an activity that two players could do that took advantage of two people working together.
(Swapping leaders by shaking the controller is a fun idea as opposed to needing a menu but the trigger for it is way too sensitive.)

Agreed with everything but the Nook shop upgrades. They sell furniture that you can't craft, but they only sell, what, 3 pieces of furniture a day? 4 for special holidays.
I'd love an upgrade where they could sell 5 or 6 items, and actually sell other color variations. I loathe that they expect us to visit other people to complete the catalog.

Thanks for addressing problems with terraforming. I was very hyped about that feature but it died down pretty quick.
My first gripe with terraforming is that you get it relatively late in the game. You need to brush up your island and have K.K perform, by that time you'll probably have all villagers and some kind of setup.
But okay, if you have an easy way to renovate stuff on your island, it's not the problem. Except, there is no easy way. You can only move one building. And if you're planning to terraform an ENTIRE island, your best strategy to put buildings away where they don't mess with your planning of landing which means you're gonna move buildings twice.
Imprecision is a problem that's not super noticeable at first but it's definitely annoying the more time you spend on changing stuff. And each action has animation so watching your character accidentally remove a floor tile for god knows how many times will kill you inside.
All in all, I understand the game requires patience and a slow approach to building up your island but for a game that is so hardly focused on customization compared to previous titles... couldn't they make this a little bit easier? At least, make visible tiles so a player knows exactly which side he terraforms.

so my biggest issue with acnh... i'm someone with autism which means i struggle with motivation and getting things done. i have a friend with adhd who has the same problems. and acnh's defence of "adding updates slowly makes you want to play more!" has the exact opposite effect for me and my friend: things that should be like new opportunities or different things to do feel more like chores that we have to complete in time for the next update. we didn't finish the halloween stuff just because we felt like we had to since it was the new update instead of something fun. i don't know if any other mentally il people have this problem??? but it's been my main criticism of the game so far lol

Amazing video! Really hope you make a followup video a year after release, or whenever the updates are done. Would love to see how your opinions have changed when the game is finished.
On that note, as much as I love game updates, most of them don't work for me in New Horizons. Holidays do, but others won't really work because they'll increase the daily playtime at a point where people are already burnt out on the game. I doubt anyone will see The Roost being added and go "Well, I guess I should start playing the game regularly again."

in new leaf once I got Resetti, I purposefully reset my game just to hear the music and see him again. It’s such a nostalgic thing for me, since I’ve played since the GameCube game and it’s really like an empty hole without him. I wish there was an option to disable the auto save feature, and/or replace it with Resetti saying something like “I saved your data for you, don’t try and reset again!!” or even just changing the auto save symbol to him popping out of the ground or something. I know the rescue service is where he is now, but with unbreakable ladder and vaulting pole what’s the point in ever using it

So, I had a couple of thoughts along the way, not sure if I'll remember all of them, but I'll get the ones I do remember:
    1) As far as putting things down outside, I think Nintendo should look at the georama feature in Dark Cloud 2, specifically the Georama for the final area, as it is so remarkably precise that moving any one thing just a pixel or two wrong throws off the entire rest of the georama you're building, it's both amazingly flexible and incredibly infuriating.
    2) If you have the amiibo villager cards, you get to move villagers of your choice into your town, over the course of THREE DAYS. You invite them to the campsite, do a little task for them, and then they stay in the tent the entire day. Repeat the invite the next day, repeat task, day 3, invite, task, 'Hey, maybe I should move here? Life at home is the suck'... "Yes, please!" Then you get to wait a day for them to actually move TO THE ISLAND, including a day of boxes. So, technically, it takes a whole week.
    3) The museum, good lord, seeing as I've played other AC games (New Leaf especially), I knew the moment I stepped foot on the island to catch everything. First day task to Tom Nook, "Here's 5 animals I've caught"... 'sweet, I'll get my buddy Blathers to move in, he'll be here tomorrow.' Wait a day, with the beach in front of the museum loaded to the brim with cages and aquariums, next day, "Hey, here's bugs and fish, one at a time until I hit... 7 donated?" 'Nice! I can definitely get a full permit for a museum now, I'll be closed all day tomorrow, and I'm taking no more donations today!' "But I've got a whole beach full of donations... fine, whatever..." Two days later, "Oh, NOW I can donate more than one thing at a time?"

I do have a funny story about a camper wanting to replace a villager I liked.
Chevre visited my primary island the day I completed my Bug encyclopedia. As minigame rewards, she gave me a gizzard sushi costume, a kitchen scale, and a chef's outfit, in a row. She wanted Vivian, one of the first villagers who ever came to my island, to move out.
At first I didn't like the idea of losing my only Snooty with the Snoot, but then I came up with the outlandish story of Chevre disappearing Vivian and cooking her into Wolf Sushi, casually moving in to Viv's house, and gifting the other islanders the aformentioned sushi as a welcoming present. Her house is now themed around that horrific and stupid idea.
I also have another long-running gag.
Years ago in New Leaf, Samson started sending O'Hare, my favorite villager, quasi-romantic letters, to which O'Hare would act very oblivious about, and constantly ask me what they meant. Since then, every time I'd get O'Hare in a town(which was weirdly common in New Leaf for some reason). It finally came to a head when O'Hare was my first camper in my second Island, and a year and a half later, in a brike joke to end all brick jokes, Samson finally moved in in an effort to be near his unending and unrequited crush.
But aside from that, Villagers in general have very little character outside of headcanons I make up for them based on random circumstance. I'm actually afraid of interacting with them for fear of raising griendships and as a result, removing the more interactive and interesting lower friendship tiers, where favors, games, and interesting dialogue happen.

I appreciated the "flower immortality" at first, but these days I wish they'd die, or at least be easier to remove. My town is overrun with flowers and the prospect of having to dig them all up to make space is daunting and tiring (and part of the reason why I haven't played new horizons in months). And what you said about some of the character models being slightly off? Yeah, I felt that. I love O'Hare and went out of my way to get him as soon as possible, only to find he looked... well, the same for the most part, but different enough that something didn't feel right. It was strange and your explanation fits.
This is a great review btw, you touched on pretty much every aspect that has worn down my appreciation for the game. Things I liked at first, quickly became tedious and frustrating. Which is a shame, because I still love the concept a lot.

Love the comments about the game potentially teaching you about the art before you buy it so that you can make an educated purchase when Redd is on your island. I never thought about it that way, and now that version of the game play seems like a no brainer! I also feel like buying from Redd is always a disappointing chore because I usually choose a fake, and switching the learning process would make buying from Redd more engaging.

In senior year of high school I valued the early bird ordinance more than the beautiful town one; so I'd spend an hour each morning water all 500ish of my flowers in town. It was tedious but I really enjoyed the work/like you said the tension between killing off the flowers, and it guaranteed I'd play every day, and made sure I went to every corner of the town to say hello to everyone and get every fossil. (which Im 45 minutes in so I don't know if you cover this, it took me two years of playing new leaf to complete my fossil collection vs. the maybe four months it took with new horizons, I'm disappointed how easily that was accomplished) I wasn't even interested in breeding the rare types of flowers, just watering them and have them sparkle. With New Horizons now tho, I have no motivation to water them at all, and I usually only play twice a week so my villagers don't comment on thinking I'm dead or angry at them
It's weird how much connivence gets rid of what I liked about the game/ what had me play every day, I've been tempted to actually rebuy a 3DS and New Leaf again
