  • Before you and your contributors start to fill out your online Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, you’ll each need to create a StudentAid.gov account so that you can complete your required sections of the form and be eligible for federal student aid.
You’ll access your StudentAid.gov account using an FSA ID (account username and password). Your StudentAid.gov account contains verified personal information, so each StudentAid.gov account can link to only one person. Don’t wait. Take the first step to completing your FAFSA form today and create a StudentAid.gov account.
Create your StudentAid.gov account at studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-...
The 2024-25 FAFSA form is available for students attending college between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. When you submit your completed FAFSA form, you’ll get an email confirming that we received your form with preliminary information related to your eligibility for federal student aid. We’ll provide your FAFSA eligibility information to your school(s) and state in the first half of March. More information: StudentAid.gov/announcements-...
Pro tip: We strongly recommend that students start and complete their section of the 2024-25 FAFSA form first to save time and prevent errors. For more tips on completing the form head to StudentAid.gov/announcements-...

This is by far the silliest addition to the FAFSA process - what's even sillier is the wait times to connect someone over at FAFSA

So someone that is married, but keeps finances separate still has to receive “permission” from their spouse and provide their sensitive data. This is the most invasive, idiotic new policy I have ever heard of. What happens if someone is still married and they aren’t legally separated, but hate each other? Not my circumstance, but must be a real thing. Is the spouse applying for aid just supposed to forego school because the other person refuses to be on the forms? And since the employees on the customer service line do not seem to know anything, who do you ask?! This is nuts!

Not liking this new FSFSA-and no way to get your questions answered. Always say a long wait and hangs up on you, I have been trying for days. So frustrating.

I understand that contributors consent must be provided even if they file taxes in a foreign country, but then will they need to provide their foreign tax info ? Since the new process is supposed to get tax info directly from the IRS I am a bit confused about how it would work for parent who live in a foreign country.

If my parent and step-parent filed for taxes together do they both require accounts?

Does each married parent need their own FSA ID if they filed their taxes jointly? Or does just one provide consent for both? I haven't been able to find a direct answer to this question in any of your materials.

I found the exact website link that may answer your question. Specifically, the answer to question #1 may apply to you: studentaid.gov/resources/is-my-parent-a-contributor-text
(I'm giving the link instead of answering directly because I don't know your family situation well, so my answer might be bad info)
