They are discriminating against students whose parents are undocumented and lack social security. They are consistently placing them at a disadvantage - this is a form of racism. The system is not effective for those with Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs).
Wrong. Anyone that’s born in America regardless of the immigration status of their parents becomes an American citizen with a Social Security number. The only people without Social Security numbers are criminal invaders. Criminal invaders should not get any benefits in America. They should get immediately deported. It’s not fair to hard-working legal Americans that we are having our tax dollars stolen from us in order to give free stuff to criminals.
You need to fix this issue and listen to the comments because there are numerous scholarships that require the FAFSA be completed before the end of Jan 15-23 so please fix this as quickly as you can without causing too many issues. This is keeping us disadvantage kids down at the bottom of the ladder.
I found the following comment here and it worked for me, I was stuck in the same ssn section and all I did was to follow the next comment: hey not sure if youve figured it out but this worked for me i got it on reddit this is what they said “ So I had the same issue and fixed it. Go through the process and once you get to the screen where the ssn button doesn’t work, click your previous arrow to go back to the previous screen. Then tap on continue. Doing that should allow you to skip that ssn button issue.”

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! This actually worked, my husband was able to create the fafsa account, then got the email to verify identity, had to call to the number they gave (waited like an hour but fine), then while them on the phone, they sent him an email that included a case number with an attestation form, for him to fill out and sign to send back along with a copy of his passport to an email address it specified. So right now it will take a couple of days for them to verify identity and then he'll be able to complete his portion
It let me skip it and complete the rest of the 7 steps but when I’m on the last step ready to submit it. I get a message saying “unknown error has occurred please try again or close all browsers” and I’ll try and same message again. Anyone have the same problem?
My dad is trying to make his account but every time we finish puting our address and phone number it drags me back to the 1st page and asking for a ssn even tho we don't have one and it doesn't let us select no ssn.

I apologize for the confusion. Initially, I was searching for information on Alberta student aid in Canada, and I mistakenly thought this platform was about Canadians. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was about SSN, not SIN. in Canada it stand for (Social insurance number)
After attempting to continue without an SSN, it redirects me back to step one and will not let me continue until I submit a SSN. Once I get to the address page is when it redirects me and completely doesn't let the account to be created! FIX IT OR AT LEAST find a way to bypass this as its really stressful and limiting especially when one is depending on financial aid!

It's not letting me make an account. There's a bug on "Personal Information" page, after adding the address and phone number it won't let me get passed because it asks for a SSN and it won't let me click "I do not have a SSN" box.
Update: I got a hold of them on the phone-- StudentAid is working on the website.. they told me to wait 3 days to try again. Meanwhile, we need to go to the Student Aid Forms and complete the Attestation and Validation of Identity form.

@@americarodriguez9920 we also got a hold of them after 28 minutes on hold but they said the dept of education is working on how to get the contributors w/o SSN to create their account and they have no idea when it will be fixed, that we should keep trying every day. A user got a workaround (read latest comments), maybe we'll try that
I talked to a representative over the phone and they told me they have no ETA on when the issue with the SSN will be solved. They made me stay on the call for two hours to tell me they cant do anything about it. They said keep trying every week and check if its fixed.

so I found out a way to fill out the FAFSA form without your parents having an id basically when your parents click on the invite email that is sent to them you just log into your own account and you can basically fill out everything except their consent and signature because they don't have accounts but apparently after the form is submitted and processed you can go back in and submit the consent and signature.

Question. My dad made a fsa id years ago and i think we used his Tax payer id as that was what they told us to do. Now i cant log in to his account because obviously the id is not a real ssn. What should i do?? Make him a new id or what?
Here is an update, I called the number in the email they sent me and I explained what I did, they took note of this issue that is affecting a lot of people, the representative stated that yes there is a lot of people with the same issue. after that, she sent me the Attestation & Validation of Identity for that, you need to print and email back with a form of ID after that it takes 3-5 business day to verify your identity she stated and then you are all done. I can't tell more because I am in that part of the process now.
my husband got his identity verified after emailing the attestation form and passport so he was able to create the fafsa id and log in, but when he logs in, our son's form doesn't appear at his end. Let us know if once you get your identity verified if you are able to complete your section on your kid's form

Called the helpline yesterday and they said they were aware of the issue but have no timeframe of when it should be fixed, very frustrating. We have to keep trying. It won't even open the verifying questions, it sends all parents to call to verify their accounts. If they get lucky to get an agent and case number, once they send the documentation the accounts have not been verified yet. THIS! I wasn't even prompted with the verifying questions! I have been struggling for the past month to get my parents' identity verified. I have YET to merely get a hold of an agent and start a case number. All of this is blatant discrimination.

What is your birthday. 3. what is your email. 4. What is your phone number. what id did with my mom is that I first made her practice all the answers and wrote them down for her and when she forgot I would whisper to her how to say it and then she would say it through the phone(make sure they are the one that is saying it because then they wont let you answer for her). by the way, make sure you have the account for them first and once they verify you through the phone you will get an email, and that email you just have to send them the documentation they ask for. Remove the home address, it should then allow you to by pass that but then when you get to the review page edit the box to input the home address
